We have so many lovely independent shops in our locality, please support them and shop locally when ever possible. Helsby MP, Graham Evans, is organising a fact finding meeting on fracking to ensure that local residents can quiz the experts on this subject.

At the time of going to print Graham was still awaiting confirmation for the final meeting details, but if you would like to register your interest to attend the meeting, please phone 01925606500 or email Felicity: felicity.roochove@parliament.uk and she can then let you know all of the details asap.

As you all probably know already, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Please support local Frodsham resident, Jane Brady in her quest to donate 9,000 old, or ill-fitting bra’s to this well deserved charity. Delamere Logs... A Roaring Success!

Delamere Logs is a local rural business specialising in firewood for log burners and open fires.

The business is run by brothers Will & Sam Starkey with the dedicated help of Gareth Evans a former Reaseheath Countryside Management student.

The business delivers around 1000 loads of firewood to customers throughout Cheshire each winter as well as supplying trade outlets with nets of logs and kindling. Delamere Logs established in 2012 believes its growth has been down to the quality of their logs which are seasoned naturally for 12 months outside in windrows.

My Dearly Beloved appeared waving an envelope. With trepidation, I lowered my copy of Ford Mondeo Monthly.

“Look Tom! Our Robbie tickets!”

Horrendous images flashed through my mind - a football stadium filled with pink cowboy hats, a million empty plastic wine bottles and endless traffic jams on the way home.

“But what about my tinnitus?

You know I can’t stand loud noises. It’s all that high pitched wailing and out of tune singing.”

So, after parking the Mondeo Ghia X a handy four miles from the ground, we began our pilgrimage - past fat men with mullets selling fake T-shirts, the pungent smell of greasy burgers and the wizened touts yelling “Any spare tickets?”. Eventually we made it to turnstile B, where the stewards held us behind a line until...three, two, one, go! - we sprinted across the pitch towards the front of the stage. I looked across at a fellow husband who was clearly thinking the same thing as me.

And Tom Hughes sprints the length of the pitch - and he scores!

“Wha’sem yellow things in your ears?”

“Pardon? Oh these ear plugs?

It’s quite simple madam, I can’t stand Robbie Williams.”

I watched as the woman took another slug of warm Chardonnay and tried to work out why anyone would stand in a cold stadium for five hours to see someone they hated.

Then, at last, the lights dimmed, the decibels increased and Mr Williams bounded onto the stage. I pushed my earplugs in as far as they would go. Then, something weird happened.

I stared to tap my feet. An hour and a half and a bottle of Blossom Hill later I felt a tap on my shoulder. “Excuse me sir, but can you remove your pink cowboy hat? I can’t see the stage?” Taking hold of my hand, my Dearly Beloved yelled into my ear, “Tom Hughes? Tell me that’s not a tear in your eye?”

There the exhilaration ended as we parked up at the front and, surrounded by thousands of “I wasn’t talking about the fans, stared at an empty black crowd...” stage for three hours. Vague memories of my schoolboy “For goodness sake Tom, stop panic attacks filtered through being an old fuddy duddy! And my mind. I was trapped! Since 2003, ‘Movember’ has inspired 4 million moustaches worldwide. But what’s it really about? Let’s look behind the moustache.

What is MoveMber?

The November challenge asks men to grow moustaches and talk about their health, with the aim to increase awareness of men’s health issues and raise funds for the Movember Foundation, a global charity whose mission is “to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health”.

The Foundation aims to reduce male mortality from prostate and testicular cancer and improve sufferers’ physical and mental health, and to reduce mortality from male suicide by reducing mental health discrimination and ensuring that men and boys understand how to stay mentally healthy, taking action early when they experience problems.

So far, it has raised £346 million and financed 800 research and awareness programs in 21 countries.

“In the last 10 years or so... we’ve built the largest global men’s health movement off the back of the simple act of growing a moustache and a sense of fun and mateship,” says Adam Garone, CEO and Co-Founder.

Cake and Bake Snickerdoodles These classic American cookies are crisp at the edges, chewy in the middle and have a delicious cinnamon sugar coating. Try them warm from the oven with a milkshake or hot chocolate – and if you need an excuse, America is celebrating Thanksgiving this month!

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C / 350°F / Gas Mark 4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper.

• 115g unsalted butter, softened

2. Place the butter and muscovado sugar in a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon until creamed. Beat in the maple syrup. Sift over the flour and beat in with the wooden spoon to form a rough dough.

• 100g dark muscovado sugar • 2 tbsp maple syrup • 175g self-raising flour • 1� tbsp granulated sugar • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Makes 16

3. Mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon on a flat plate. Divide and shape the dough into about16 walnut-sized balls (keep them roughly shaped – not smooth) and roll each ball in the cinnamon sugar. Place, well spaced, on the prepared baking sheets. Flatten each ball of mixture slightly with your fingertips.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 13-14 minutes, or until deep golden brown. Remove the baking sheets from the oven and sprinkle any remaining cinnamon sugar over the cookies. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.

Short Story Mrs Porlock’s Parrot An ash branch whipped across the windscreen, snapping the wiper blade off cleanly. Barry pulled the car on to the verge and slammed on the brakes.

The driver’s side windscreen became a river and the light from his headlights just a blur.

Mrs Porlock’s parrot tutted.

Barry wished he was home and dry. He’d foolishly agreed to a fifteen mile round trip in the driving rain to collect his neighbour’s parrot from the vet. These last two miles were the most perilous. By Kate McLelland Whether you were learning to sew at school, playing a musical instrument, driving a car or trying on hats, you are almost certainly likely to have used an object made with felt at some time in your life. This surprisingly versatile material is not only perfect for craft purposes but it also has a range of industrial uses, particularly in the automotive industry.

Once viewed as a functional and slightly dull material, its image has been transformed by textile artists who revolutionised its use by using felt to make artworks, clothing and fashion accessories.

Felt can be made from all types of wool fibre as well as other animal fibres such as alpaca, cashmere and angora. It’s not possible to turn synthetic fibres into felt on their own, but some synthetics can be combined with wool to give more resilience and longevity.

Felting is a simple process and once created, the fabric can be used to make a wide range of items, from sculptures and wall hangings to rugs, slippers, cushion covers and even quirky items of jewellery.

Wet felting This is a method of creating a

flat piece of felt. All you need to get started is some wool fibres, a mat made of thin bamboo strands (like a sushi mat), a bar of soap, a piece of bubble wrap and a length of nylon netting, plus warm water and detergent in a spray bottle. Lay out the bamboo mat and place even layers of fibres along its surface, each layer set at a 90 degree angle from the one underneath. Then cover with nylon netting, spray with a water and detergent mix until soaked through and agitate and compress the fibres beneath the netting (using soapy bubble wrap) until they hook together to create a single piece of fabric. When the material has matted together you can use the bamboo mat to roll and squeeze the water out of the felt before leaving it to dry.

If you are creating a picture or wall hanging, you can lay different coloured fibres onto the final layer to create a visual image before squeezing out the water and drying the artwork. needle felting This is a popular technique for creating 2D and 3D shapes, in which special notched needles are used to tangle and compress a mass of fibres in order to create a sculpture or piece of jewellery.

nuno felting This is a technique developed

by Australian fibre artist Polly Stirling, who bonds wool fibres onto a thin background fabric such as silk gauze or muslin.

Nuno techniques can create anything from a delicate scarf to a thick winter coat.

Textile artist Rosiepink has posted some easy-to-follow, free “how to” guides online, supported by three ebooks on creating felt artworks (see http://rosiepink.typepad. co.uk). Alternatively, ask your local library for a copy of “A Beginner’s Guide to Feltmaking” by Shirley Ascher and Jane Bateman, which gives step-by-step instructions on feltmaking as well as suggesting a number of felt projects.

Making felt is easy and very rewarding, with the potential to create a wide range of vibrant and exciting artworks and objects. It only takes a few simple tools, a bag of fibres and some imagination to get started, so if you ever felt like learning a new skill, felting may be for you.

NEW SOCIAL CLUB FOR STROKE SUFFERERS The Frodsham and District Stroke Club was set up in memory of Frodsham resident Alan Johnson who sadly passed away early this year. They meet on the first Monday of the month at the Frodsham Conservative Club. For the winter months the meetings are in the afternoon.

The Stroke Club offers a range of activities and entertainment and tries to do something different each month. As well as bingo, raffles and tombola there have been musical evenings, an information evening, hot pot supper and coach trips. The next meeting, on 2nd November is a quiz afternoon.

The Club is proud to announce they are the newest Stroke Club to be affiliated with the National Stroke Association, bringing many more benefits to its members.

Club President Jean Johnson is a fantastic fund raiser and is hosting The Big Christmas Bingo on 24th November at the Community Centre. There are some amazing prizes and there will be a bar and refreshments available. Look out for the posters around town.

The sun came out and so did the crowds when Helsby Hillside and Dunham Hill Womens’ Institute celebrated the centenary of the WI. From small beginnings in Anglesey, but originating in Canada, it is now a massive and influential organisation.

An invitation was sent out to other WI’s, local organisations, members and friends to join us for ”Coffee and Cake” at this special celebration held at Helsby Community Centre on Wednesday September 16th, which had been earmarked as “WI DAY”.

On show were displays of photographs, historical scrap books, dozens of beautiful and fine items of handicrafts. Also a sales table selling, of course jam, cakes and many other items of produce, plants and preserves. Also on show was a display of the many cups and trophies our WI’s have won over the years.

A very happy morning we hope was enjoyed by the 150 plus that attended. It was gratifying to see not only the chairman of the Parish Council attending, but also the chairwomen of the Cheshire Federation of the Womens Institute.

We extend an invitation to any interested ladies to join us at our monthly meetings. Helsby Hillside meet in the Community Centre at 7-30pm on the second Tuesday in the month. Dunham Hill at the Village Hall on the 4th Tuesday at 7pm.

Viva La Fiesta!

During October the children who attend the Helsby based dance school, Danash Stage School, put on five performances of their dance show Viva La Fiesta at the village community centre.

A team of parents transformed the community centre into a theatre for the week with stage, lighting and seating. Parents have been busily sewing magnificent costumes under the guidance of Danash founder Maureen Nash and the girls have been practising routines choreographed by dance teacher Beverley Nash since March.

“Parents and friends of the dance school have worked hard all year to fundraise in order for the show to go on. Even the girls themselves have been given a pound to “grow” for us which they have done in a variety of ways - holding a Bake Off inspired afternoon tea, a camp out, a teddy tombola and tidying up their toys! We were also very fortunate in receiving a grant from Helsby Parish Council to replace vital parts of our aging set for which we are very grateful,” said Judith Potts, chair of the fundraising committee.

The youngest member of the cast is two year old Molly who makes a third generation of Nash dancers - Grandma Maureen directs and costumes the show whilst Aunty Bev choreographs and mum Gette dances on stage.

Helsby Defibrillators Defibrillators are stored at Helsby Health Centre, Helsby Community Sports Club, Helsby High School, Tesco’s and Loxley Hall Nursing Home.

Residents are strongly advised to call 999 immediately if they suspect someone is in Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Defibrillators are designed for treating life-threatening heart beat irregularities if you can access a unit before the emergency services arrive.

LOVE YOUR LOCAL PRODUCE MARKET Its all fun and Jingle bells in preparation for the next KTI Local Produce market at Kingsley Community Centre, 9.30am to 1.00pm on Saturday 5th December. There will be food stalls, fresh vegetables, Xmas gifts, entertainment, mince pies and refreshments and lots more to enjoy.

SEISMIC TESTING AND THE COMMUNITY Testing for shale gas is being carried out in Helsby and on Frodsham Marshes and FTI is seeking information about the testing programme and its outcomes to ensure that there is proper consultation with the community. FRODSHAM PLAYERS present SEASON’S GREETINGS by ALAN AYCKBOURN It’s Christmas at Neville & Belinda Bunker’s house and all the family have gathered together for the festivities. But as the children lurk just out of sight, it’s the adults who are letting the side down.

Presiding over it all are two warring uncles: Harvey, a bullying, retired security guard who keeps the TV remote to himself, buys toy guns for his nieces and believes there’s a thief in the party and Bernard, a kindly, incompetent doctor with an interminable puppet show to perform. As the Christmas celebrations get underway, there’s cheating at snakes and ladders, fighting over comic books and a bungled infidelity beneath the tree.

Alan Ayckbourn’s masterly Season’s Greetings offers a seriously entertaining look at the misery and high jinks of an average family Christmas.

The play will be performed by Frodsham Players on 2-5 December at Frodsham Community Centre, Fluin Lane, Frodsham, WA6 7QN. Curtain up is at 7:30pm and tickets cost £9.

The ‘bank’ will be at Frodsham C.E Primary School, School Lane, Frodsham, WA6 6AF. So please feel free to sort out your smalls drawers! and bring them along to school or drop them off at my house - 39, Hillside Road, Frodsham.

This is a three-fold scheme which not only raises money for research into the treatment and prevention of breast cancer in our country, but also promotes recycling, and at the same time reaches out to women in Africa in many ways, least of all, addressing poverty.
