Hello! Welcome to the May edition. hat a fantastic, hot aster weekend we have all enjoyed, fingers crossed that we get the same again for this month’s Bank Holiday weekends. Paricularly for Manley and Alvanley Church Spring Fair which is now a bianual event, taking place on Monday 6th May. This year see’s the addition of a climbing wall as well as all of the usual attractions including the dog show, which is alway very popular.

If you are looking for a summer get away in France this year then take a look at ‘Nelly’s Gîte’in Normandy - p6 where our lovely friends, Lynne and Colin (previously from Frodsham) are ‘living the dream’ and are sure to give you a friendly welcome. I can’t wait to visit them soon....oooo all that lovely wine and cheese Kathryn Smith School of Dance held a fabulous show in March, take a look at the adorable photographs on pages 32 & 33. Talking of photographs, Frodsham has a new photographic studio on Church Street, Jonathan Davies Photographic delivers a range of professional and affordable photography services (page 10).

Huge congratulations to popular Helsby resident, Bob Day who last month won the Frodsham and District Billiard League, receiving The Catherall Cup for Individual Merit. An award that he first won 66 years ago in the 1951-1952 league, aged 22 years, catch up with Bob’s story on page 93.

Congratulations also to the team at Home Instead Senior Care who have been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). You can read more about this on page 16 & 17.

Outstanding rating for local care company with people at its heart A Frodsham-based home care company has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Home Instead Senior Care received the award following a detailed inspection by the care industry’s regulatory body.

Home Instead pro ides care and companionship to older people in their own homes, allowing residents of rodsham, uncorn and idnes to li e independently for longer. In the C C report, a client s family member is uoted as saying, It s the e cellent support that my father recei es that enables him to continue to li e in his own home.

The team new how much it meant and arranged for their client to isit a local stables that specialised in the breed, allowing them to spend time around the horses which was such a special moment for e eryone. lso ta ing e tra care of their client s li es and disli es is hugely important, and one client really en oyed a cup of tea and it had to be ust right. So their caregi er put together notes, step by step, on how they li ed their tea prepared with personalised tea ma ing instructions built into their care plan, so it would always be perfect.

Miso Broth with Pak Choi and Tofu Miso paste is made from fermented soya beans and is a staple in Japanese cooking. Look out for jars in Oriental stores or the World Food sections of large supermarkets. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s perfect for making a quick and tasty soup or broth.

Ready in: 15 minutes | Serves 4

Ingredients tbsp egetable oil garlic clo es, crushed g shiita e mushrooms, sliced x g pac s smo ed tofu, cubed tbsp miso paste tbsp light soy sauce g pa choi, roughly chopped

eat the egetable oil in a large deep frying pan o er a high heat. Add the garlic and sliced mushrooms and stir fry for minutes until the mushrooms are ust tender and golden. emo e ith a slotted spoon and set aside.

Add the tofu to the pan and stir fry for minutes until ust bro ned. educe the heat and stir in the miso paste, soy sauce and litre of boiling ater. lo ly bring to the boil then add the pa choi and simmer for minutes until ust softened. eturn the mushrooms to the pan and heat through for a further minute. i ide the broth bet een four armed bo ls and ser e immediately.

Mint sprigs, sliced apricots and fresh berries, to decorate

lace four cm ring moulds on a ba ing tray lined ith ba ing paper see tip . Mix together the crushed biscuits and butter and di ide bet een the ring moulds, pressing do n firmly ith the bac of a teaspoon. Chill for minutes. lace the orange uice in a small heatproof bo l and sprin le o er the gelatine. Micro a e on the high setting for seconds then stir until the gelatine has dissol ed. Cool for minutes. lace the soft cheese in a bo l and beat in the orange est and caster sugar until smooth. ently fold in the cooled li uid gelatine follo ed by the hipped cream. poon into the moulds and le el the surface. Bob’s still got what it takes at 88 years young... reclaiming a Cup that he rst won 66 years ago Huge congratulations to Bob Day who last month won the Frodsham and District Billiard League, receiving The Catherall Cu or n i i ua erit n a ar that he rst on years ago in the 1951-1952 league, aged 22 years. he Cathera Cu as rst resente in 9 9 y Cathera s an Bo as a so the rou re i ient in the 9 eague an a so in the 9 eague t is a assi e a hei e ent to win it once again, especially at 88 years; infact he is the oldest person to have ever won the cup - well done Bob! Bob started playing billiards at the age of 14 and currently plays for the team at Manley Village Hall. He is now the proud Captain of the team and still plays with the same cue that he has ha or years, a ter a uiring it or the ri e y onation o Many of you, particularly Helsby residents will know Bob who is a very popular local man. I’ve kno n Bo or any years, ha ing een in the sa e Hi si e Pri ary hoo ass an He s y High hoo year as his son, ike a so ha e ery on e ories o Bo as aretaker at He s y Community Centre, a position that he held for twenty years and he is still very much involved as deputy caretaker, covering holidays and helping out whenever he is needed.

I had a lovely coffee and catch up with Bob and his wife, Phyllis, reminiscing about school with Mike (they also have two older daughters, Jen and Carole) and ‘Minis and Mums’ which was held at Helsby Community Centre when our boys were little and Bob was caretaker. He really was a godsend, helping us mums to get all of the toys and equipment out every Thursday and putting it all away again. Bob was always the one up the ladder stacking shelves as we passed various boxes full of toys, trikes, garages, ironing boards etc up to him. I’m sure that all of the other mums join me in saying “thank you Bob”. As will all of the other local groups: an e sho s, o ee ornings, ingos, hur h ayres, kee t u s an e eryone e se ho has and those who still do use the Community Centre.

In addition to Bob’s involvement with Helsby Community Centre and Billiards Clubs, he also starte He s y i age Bo s C u at He s y Co unity orts C u ith ohn Carter in Bob is still Chairman of this club and in his words he says “it really brings people together and helps to give them something to do, especially during the winter months”. If that’s not enough, he also plays snooker in the Frodsham League Bob you certainly are one to be admired!

We are raising money for Murdered Abroad, who are a small charity offering help and support to the 60/80 families a year who will be affected by loved ones who have been murdered abroad. The Charity is not government funded and relies on donations alone. The trustees volunteer their time endlessly to work with statutory bodies to improve legislation and raise awareness of the complex issues faced by families and friends of those british citizens who have been murdered abroad.
