A couple of weeks ago, Chris and I paid another visit to Beer Heroes Tap Room in Helsby to sample beers in the name of work, it’s a tough life! You can read all about our experience and the success of Beer Heroes on the centre pages. Exciting times are ahead for KDE Ltd following their recent acquisition of Electrical

Project Installations Limited (EPI Ltd) which will increase the head count at KDE to 92 employees with a ﬂeet of 46 vehicles. See pages 14-15 for the full story.

History The History of Beauty By Catherine Rose

we all have an innate appreciation of beauty but throughout history and across cultures, the concept of what makes a woman beautiful has changed according to the social background and fashions of the time. Surviving examples of primitive art usually depict women as full-figured, even fat, and often pregnant. This is because fertility was of primary importance for those civilizations. When survival was precarious, a woman’s ability to reproduce was the bottom line. Just as we do today, people adorned their bodies with jewellery, paint, tattoos and piercings, not only to look attractive but also as status symbols. And status has always played a big part in our concept of beauty.

the medieval and early Renaissance era, ‘beautiful’ women had narrow shoulders and small breasts that emphasised their weaker sex compared to the broad, swordwielding shoulders of their menfolk. In many paintings women are also shown with very rounded stomachs. This didn’t necessarily mean they were pregnant: it was a beauty ideal indicating a woman was fertile and able to have many children. It was also a religious time and for women, appearing virtuous was a sign of beauty. Somewhat odd to us today, a long neck and a high forehead were prized, with almost nonexistent brows to accentuate it. Women would often pluck or shave hair from their hairline to achieve this look. Once married, they were also expected to modestly cover their hair, which was how the elaborate headpieces and veils of this period came about. During the late Renaissance and Baroque eras women became more voluptuous – think of Rubens whose buxom females would be considered obese by today’s standards. There was a rationale behind this. Food was hard to come by unless you were wealthy and being full-figured meant you were well-fed and therefore of high status - hence a desirable mate.

light-skinned, it meant that you were clearly a lady from a genteel family as only poor outdoor labourers had ‘coarse tanned skin’. So for several centuries beauty was measured by how pale you were (hence the term ‘fair’ meaning ‘beautiful’). The poisonous lead-based white make-up that achieved this was also used for disguising the widespread blemishes from disease. Hair was now a beauty statement and powdered wigs were worn because many women suffered from hair loss due to venereal disease. These had become very elaborate and tall by the 18th century thanks to fashionista Marie Antionette. Along with wigs came fake beauty patches to cover up smallpox scars. Made of materials such as mouse fur and velvet, eventually these ‘mouches’ (French for ‘flies’) became a status symbol and women of beauty and fashion would keep a small box of them on their dressing table. During the 19th century an hourglass figure became the desired female body shape and corsets, long used as undergarments (the name ‘corset’ comes from the Latin ‘corpus’ meaning body), were designed to achieve a waist circumference of down to 18”, later accentuated by the bustle.

suffrage movement, a new sense of female liberation produced a beauty revolution. Women no longer wanted to be sexual objects to please men. Hemlines went up for the first time and dresses became straighter, giving a slender, more androgynous appearance. Women even wore suits and long hair was cropped. Coco Chanel, who banished the notion that only a porcelain complexion could be beautiful when she showed off a suntan, declared “a woman can never be too rich or too thin”, arguably beginning the modern trend. The 1930s-50s saw curves return, possibly thanks to the Hollywood film industry and stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield who were the

epitome of female beauty. Wearing full make-up also began to be the norm, in imitation of actors who used it to emphasise their looks on-screen. Max Factor was originally a make-up artist to the stars. With the rise in hemlines, the focus shifted to shapely legs and it was arguably the start of female epilation, when once women had even worn ‘mirkins’ (pubic wigs). The 1960s saw another beauty revolution. Society was finally recovering from WWII, rationing had ended in 1954 and young people were enjoying a wave of new music with its roots based in black culture. Once again women were re-establishing their power and asserting their sexual freedom.

Mini-skirts arrived along with big hair. Twiggy, the slender, doe-eyed model from northwest London became the most desirable example of womanhood. Compare her with the women in Rubens’ The Three Graces and you could not have two more opposing ideals. Over the last fifty years, beauty goals have gone through more subtle changes. The athletic, toned female figure became popular in the 1980s with the advent of the ubiquitous exercise video. Today, with models that range from the catwalk clothes-horse Gigi Hadid and black model Winnie Harlow who has vitiligo, to the curvy Ashley Graham, we now seem to be embracing more diversity in women’s beauty than perhaps ever before.

From launching themselves off the back of the sofa to chewing on gravel, they seem to have an innate ability to endanger themselves. Thankfully, it’s never been easier for parents to learn basic first aid. Learn first aid at home, for free While nothing beats hands on training, a video course can help prepare you for an emergency. ChannelMum. com has teamed up with St John Ambulance to produce a series of short first aid videos aimed at parents. They cover everything from seizures and choking to allergic reactions and burns. Quick home fixes Around 60 children die in household accidents every year. So it’s well worth taking some time to look for any potential hazards. Try to see things from your child’s point of view – get on your hands and knees if needs be. What sharp corners could they bump into? What furniture could tip over if they tried to climb it? What might they be tempted to chew or taste? Simple fixes include: • Securing heavy items, such as TVs and bookcases, so they can’t topple over if your child pulls at them, or uses them as a climbing frame. • Locking away any toxic substances, including household cleaning products. Dishwasher tablets are often brightly coloured and very appealing to a young child, but they can be deadly if swallowed. • Tying up any blind cords and other strings that a child could get caught up on. • Cutting up grapes, cherry tomatoes and other fruit lengthwise, before giving them to your child, to minimise the risk of choking.

The 2014 Budget introduced new regulations on how personal pensions can be accessed. These new pension freedoms mean that, if you have a money purchase or defined contribution pension, buying an annuity is no longer your only option at retirement. Many people have since chosen to withdraw pension monies to invest in other financial products, and some have decided to pay off debts with the money. So is it a good idea to repay debt in this way, and what are the main aspects to consider? Do you want to access your pension before you retire? Some pension schemes allow you to access your pension at the age of 55. Doing so can significantly reduce the amount you have available in older age, however, unless you have other pensions or a large savings pot.

It might severely reduce the amounts you receive, or even mean that you can’t make a claim. WhaT are The cosTs of accessing your pension? Helsby Community Sports Club “A vision for sport, leisure and recreation in Helsby, Frodsham and the surrounding villages” Situated in the heart of Helsby, Helsby Community Sports Club is a growing asset to the local community and surrounding areas. Currently the club is home to six resident sports - Bowls, Football, Fishing, Rugby, Running and Tennis. In addition, the club also run Darts and Snooker Teams and has a thriving Social membership. The club is the former staff Sports Club for employees of the old BICC factory in Helsby, although its origins date back to 1895 when it was first formed as Helsby Athletic Club by the amalgamation of Helsby Cricket Club and Helsby Rugby Football Club. Taken over by BICC General Cables Limited in 1934, the club has catered for a number of different sports and recreation activities during its history, including cricket, hockey, badminton, table tennis, archery and chess. Since 1991 the club has been independently run as a non-profit making organisation by a volunteer Committee and currently the whole club proudly boasts a membership in excess of 500 adults and juniors. Like many such clubs of the past, the club plays an important role in the community, offering something for everyone – old and young alike… Helsby Tennis Club is a great place to enjoy tennis and meet local people all year round – a small, friendly club with Senior and Junior teams that play in the winter and summer Cheshire and Wirral Leagues.

The club operates three

floodlit all weather tennis courts, plus two mini courts for children and runs a coaching team led by level 4 Head coach, Mike Herd, providing a comprehensive programme of coaching for juniors and adults from beginners to more advanced. Adult courses include Beginners, Doubles game play, Women's and Cardio tennis. Helsby Bowls club similarly offers lots of opportunities for Seniors and Juniors (age 10 year plus), with two greens available and teams playing league matches and open / club competitions throughout the season. Last season, Helsby Rugby Club were crowned champions of North West Raging Bull South Division 5 and were within a whisker of making it a League & Cup double. Building on that success, this season the club have narrowly missed out on promotion again, but can be proud nevertheless of a 3rd place finish in Division 4, coupled with a mid-table finish for it’s 2nd Team which was relaunched this season following a ten-year absence. Once again, the club offers fantastic opportunities for youngsters, with Teams running from Under-7 through to Under-16 and during the summer months, the club’s Touch Rugby evenings have proved to be massively popular with old and young, boys and girls alike in recent years. Helsby Running Club represents one of the largest sections within Helsby Community Sports Club and the club host two regular training nights throughout the year, including at Castle Park, Frodsham during winter and on Helsby High School Playing Fields during the summer months as well as off-road runs around Helsby and

Frodsham hills. The club is also renowned for staging the extremely popular ‘Four Villages Half-Marathon’ each January, which has been running – if you pardon the pun! – for more than 30 years and raises £thousands for local good causes. Finally, HCSC is also home to Helsby Football Club – who’s first team plays in the Carlsberg west Cheshire league and who’s reserves play in the Chester & District football league, with junior teams also operating in the mid Cheshire youth league, Chester and District Junior league and the Halton & District Junior league. The club has an illustrious history and capped a memorable season in 1999/2000 when the Helsby FC 1st team won no less than FIVE trophies in that single season! Helsby Community Sports Club very much sees itself as being the centre for sport, recreation and leisure for Helsby, Frodsham and the surrounding rural villages. Much work has been done by the club’s volunteers during the past ten years to establish and develop junior teams and ambitious plans to develop a new clubhouse incorporating an indoor sports hall are finally beginning to come to fruition (see artist’s impression, below right). Without any consultation I marched up to Barry, to be joined by my rival. Like two prize fighters, we stared each other out. The room fell silent. I felt my heartbeat thumping in my ears. “OK, first to answer wins the jackpot. In the children’s TV programme Trumpton, how many firemen were there?”

Barry read out the answers. “Question one. Women got the vote in…1928.”

My mind desperately flashed back to my youth. “Seven!” I shouted.

Sarah glared at me. “I told you Nigel was right!”

My opponent yelled, “Six.”

Shamefully I buried my face into my pint. Then Barry collated the scores and announced, “We have a

Sarah was unimpressed. “Well, if you’d been a little better clued up about women’s suffrage instead of women’s bodies - or Trumpton Firemen for that matter - we would now be £73.50 to the good.” Sometimes life (and quizzes) can be so unfair. TAP ROOM HELSBY TRAIN STATION, STATION AVENUE, HELSBY, CHESHIRE, WA6 0AG

Beer Heroes Tap Room opened at Helsby Railway Station in November 2016, a hidden gem for craft beer enthusiasts, attracting visitors from far and near. We recently met up with the owners, Carl and Kelly and enjoyed sampling a selection of the beers and hearing how it all began.... Back in 2010, the couple ran a convenience store in Northwich and having a shared passion for beer they initially stocked 20 American Craft Beers, which quickly expanded to between 50 and 60 different beers from the UK as well as the States.

DRINK IN WITH 8 AWESOME BEERS ON TAP The premises at Helsby Railway Station was initially to be used as a store room for the online business, however, Carl spotted the opportunity of turning it into a tap room and so in November 2016 the doors were opened and it is proving to be very popular and much busier than they expected.

Four years later they were approached by Amazon and supplied several mixed packs to be sold in this way. Such was the success that Carl and Kelly decided to set up their own website and sell directly to the public in addition to Amazon.

BUY ONLINE AT BEERHEROES.COM There are now over 400 craft beers available on the website, which are all carefully sourced and tested, maintaining their excellent reputation. If a beer arrives for trial and it doesn’t meet the teams standards, it isn’t accepted! With as many as 8-9 new breweries popping up each week, there is a lot of competition for them to be taken on to the prestigious Beer Heroes website.

Inside is rather quirky with rustic tables, benches and actual kegs to sit on with emoji cushions on the top! As well as the vast choice of bottled beers and ciders there are eight awesome beers available on tap. For none beer drinkers there is wine, prosecco and soft drinks available.

If you’re spoilt for choice or can’t make your mind up, you are always welcome to have a taster. You can also order a ‘Beer Flight’, which is four different beers, each one a third of a pint. This is a great way to try different beers with friends and it’s interesting to hear each others Some of the beers are seasonal, for example views and preferences. One of the beers that we dark beers are popular around Christmas, while tried, I wasn’t keen on but Chris really liked it, IPA and Sours are more popular in Summer. so it’s a fun way to enjoy a drink, or four! Beers are posted out not only across the UK but also abroad and they have even supplied an order to Buckingham Palace!

So on to the beers that we tried... The first being Lush from Amundsen Brewery, an old German style sour beer, brewed in Oslo. Slightly pink in colour, this creamy effervescent sour beer at 5.5% with raspberry and lime really did give the sweet followed by sour experience and got the thumbs up. Second was Mad Hatter at 6%, brewed at a Liverpool based brewery. A superb Mandarin IPA with a pleasant citrus taste. This one was probably my favourite and I kept going back to it! Next was Bread & Circuses, a pale ale from local brewery Chapter Brewery based in Sutton Weaver. At 3.9%, this had buttery, biscuit undertones, a very nice, refreshing drink. And from a pale ale to a Black IPA. Brewed in Tottenham by Beavertown Brewery, Black Betty was very unique and not at all like Guinness as I thought it would be. Brewed with hops but using a dark malt, you initially get the smell of the hops, followed by a treacle / coffee smoothness. The eight beers that are available on tap constantly rotate and are hardly ever repeated so there is always something new to try. Supplied by small Craft Breweries, each brew is slightly different because of the hops used. All of the beers on tap are keg conditioned, which is the modern way and they don’t contain any additives or preservatives.

The huge choice of bottled beers can be bought individually or as many as you like. Mixed 6 or 12 packs make a nice gift - note Father’s Day is approaching! Gift Vouchers are also available. The unique selling point at Beer Heroes is that they offer beers that you wouldn’t usually see in supermarkets or off licenses.

ExPERT TASTING SESSIONS If you would like to learn more about craft beer and fancy tasting unique draught beers, join the beer expert for a fully guided tasting of awesome craft beers. Be prepared to learn about and taste 8 x 1/3 pints whilst being taught what tastes to look for and how the professionals do it. The next Beer Tasting experience is on May 6th and 7th and June 3rd and 4th, starting at 12.00 midday. Also at The Old Bank Tearooms, Helsby on the 17th June 7-9pm with a bar for further drinks until 11pm. Just £15 per person (pre-booking is essential) and snacks are provided throughout this two hours of beer heaven.

MOBILE CRAfT BEER BAR TO HIRE fOR EVENTS Having a party? Beer Heroes can provide you with a keg, complete with a hand pump and flow control tap. They also have mobile beer bars which are perfect for parties, events, weddings etc. Four or eight tap systems are available and can be set up in the venue or outside under a gazebo. When Those ‘Golden Years’ Are Tarnished By Stress by Kate McLelland The expression ‘golden years’ refers to that period in our lives in between retirement and agerelated physical decline: a time when we are supposed to enjoy the greatest quality of life. There’s a general assumption that life is easier and sweeter for the older generation, and this has been supported by a survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics, in which 300,000 adults agreed that life satisfaction peaks between the ages of 65 and 79. However, while life is golden for some, others may find themselves facing unexpected responsibility and stress. In these insecure economic times, many grown-up children are forced to return to the family home for economic reasons, often with the expectation that their aging parents will provide childcare. And it’s not just the younger generation who may need help. As people are living longer, it’s not uncommon to find individuals in their 60s and 70s supporting their elderly parents, sometimes with fulltime care.

South Africa Sani Pass By Solange Hando South Africa’s highest range almost defies imagination. Named Drakensberg, or Dragon Mountain, known to the Zulus as Barrier of Spears, it forms the eastern section of the Great Escarpment, a pristine wilderness laced in waterfalls and challenging trails, while on the Sani Pass at 2,874 metres the highest pub in Africa lures day visitors with mulled wine and breathtaking views. But to stand on the ‘roof of Africa’, one must tackle the hair-raising drive up to the pass. Copper-coloured antelopes graze quietly on the slopes while fresh water springs gurgle on the rocks. Baboons plod around, baring their teeth to protect their young. At the Good Hope Centre, taxi drivers call out ‘one more customer, just one more’.

Camembert & Red Pepper Tarts Makes 4

Ready in 45 minutes

A really quick and easy snack, starter or light supper dish made with just five ingredients.

Ingredients: •

2 large red peppers, deseeded and cut into strips

•

1 tbsp olive oil

•

250g puff pastry

•

150g Camembert cheese, thinly sliced

•

150g bag rocket and watercress salad

TIP

Add extra flavour by spreading a thin layer of pesto sauce or tomato chutney in the pastry square before topping with the pepper and cheese.

Preheat the oven to 220C, 200C Fan, Gas Mark 7. Place the pepper strips in a shallow roasting tin. Drizzle over the olive oil and roast for 15 minutes until just tender. Leave to cool. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface to a rough square shape the thickness of a pound coin. Trim with a sharp knife to make a 26cm square. Cut into 4 x 13cm squares. Place the squares of pastry on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. With the tip of the knife, score a border in each pastry square about 1cm in from the outer edge. Top each pastry square with some of the roasted pepper strips and cheese slices.
