April certainly was a busy month of awards for local businesses... Valued Land of Beds staff and sub-contractors were treated to a gala awards evening in honour of what was a record-breaking turnover year for the sleep specialists. Congratulations to the award winners Rising Star Marcus Lightfoot, Outstanding Contributor Tony Coward and joint Employees of the Year, Hannah Rushton-McGregor and Lauren Large. KDE are proud to announce that Matthew Darlington; one of their Directors has won the title of Young Business Development Professional in the prestigious Insider’s Young Professionals Awards 2016. His win was announced at a black tie event at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. You can read all about this on page 17, congratulations Matthew. Simon and Josh from All-Mighty Rooﬁng are delighted to be accredited to Checkatrade, a directory that runs strict background checks on tradesmen before they can become a member and then continuously monitor the business to ensure a high standard of workmanship. This devastating crime is on the rise, and the Land Registry claim to have prevented over £66 million of fraud in the last ﬁve years. Property Fraud explained There are many different kinds of Property Fraud and it is important that you understand some of the risks in order to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. End-of-year figures revealed the Customer Service, Sales and Ecommerce teams had not only met their projected turnover target of £5million for 2015 but had smashed it by more than £400,000. As a small child during W.W.II I became very interested in birds and their nests & eggs and would spend hours in the countryside watching them to see where they returned to their nests - I lived in the hills of the Peak District amongst farming folk.

As I grew up I lost interest in egg collecting and started studying birds themselves. Not as a twitcher to tick off a list but how they fitted in with ecology, why their plumage was so varied, their bills and how they developed their shapes for their feeding habits. I look forward to sharing this knowledge with you in future editions and show you why birds are so interesting and have given me and my family joy over the years.

Thai Beef Salad Serves 4

Ready in 50 minutes, plus marinating time This colourful and fragrant main-meal salad is great for easy entertaining. Choose thick pieces of steak and take care not to overcook them or they will become tough and chewy.

2 x 175g sirloin steaks 1 tbsp lime juice 2 tbsp light soy sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1 tsp dried chilli flakes 6 spring onions, trimmed and thinly sliced 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 100g fresh bean sprouts 1/4 cucumber, thinly sliced 4 firm plum tomatoes, quartered 200g mixed salad leaves

FOR THE DRESSING • • • • •

Place the steak in a shallow dish. Mix together the lime juice, soy sauce, garlic and chilli flakes. Season with freshly ground black pepper and cover and leave to marinate for 1 hour. Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle until very hot. Add the steak and cook for 4-6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan, cover with foil and leave to rest for 15 minutes. Toss together the spring onions, radishes, bean sprouts, cucumber, tomatoes and salad leaves. Mix together all the dressing ingredients, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Slice the warm steak thinly across the grain. Toss gently into the salad with the dressing. Pile into a large shallow serving dish and serve immediately, or leave to cool and serve chilled.

Throughout history there have been very few people who found great success in their seventies and eighties. An exception was the artist Mary Delany who, at the age of 71, became a favourite at the court of King George III due to her mastery of a particular skill: decoupage. The word originally comes from the Middle French term “Decouper”, meaning to cut out or cut from. It is said to have originated from an East Siberian funeral tradition in which nomadic tribes cut out shapes in felt to decorate their tombs. During the 12th century the Chinese put their own spin on the idea, using cut out paper to decorate lanterns, windows, boxes and other items. It took another five hundred years before the concept of decoupage reached Europe. In the 17th century Venice was at the forefront of trade with the Far East, and through this busy trading hub objects decorated with paper made their way onto the rest of the continent.

It’s time to give your home office a facelift, says Katherine Sorrell Whether your working space is a corner of the kitchen used for catching up with email, or a high-spec office with everything necessary for fulltime self-employment, it needs to work for you. A few small improvements can make your workspace more comfortable, functional and attractive.

could consider adding a small worktop to one side of your existing desk, or improve your organisation with a new desk that incorporates drawers, cubby holes, shelves or whatever other type of storage you need. If you can, use nearby walls to lift as much as possible off the surface of your desk by introducing wall-mounted storage such as shelves, pin boards, peg boards or hanging racks. Geneva Motor Show 2016 By James Baggott

The Geneva Motor Show is one of the biggest events on the automotive calendar, and is an opportunity for the largest car manufacturers in the world to showcase their new models and technology. With hundreds of stands spread across vast halls, the motor show at Geneva gives a real insight into the direction that the motor industry is heading.

Renault Scenic

Putting the humble Scenic above a fire-breathing Bugatti may seem a little odd, but the MPV’s importance can’t be understated. This size of vehicle has been waning in popularity of late, owing to the growth of the SUV and crossover in the family car market. The Scenic is hoping to fight back, bringing with it more radical styling and a design that will no doubt attract younger buyers back to the MPV.

Jaguar F-Type SVR

It may have a snarling cat on the bonnet, but this is no ordinary Jaguar. Set to be the company’s fastest production car, this latest Jaguar is the first to have been worked on by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operation department. Capable of 200mph, the SVR is faster and lighter than a standard F-Type – and is £20,000 more expensive, too. Sitting at £110,000, the SVR features a deployable rear spoiler and added aerodynamic pieces designed to make it as stable as possible at high speed.

Alpine Vision Concept

French manufacturer Alpine is hoping to make a grand return to the motoring world with its Vision Concept. A reveal in Monaco confirmed that the display vehicle is 80 per cent of the production car – and breaks with Alpine tradition by mounting the engine in the middle of the car rather than the rear. If the concept is popular enough, it will no doubt propel Alpine into a full return to form.

Audi Q2

Audi’s Q-series of cars has been ever-popular, offering drivers a raised ride height while maintaining excellent on-road characteristics. The Q2 will be the smallest of Audi’s SUVs, with entry-level models coming with front-wheel drive. Of course, more expensive Q2s will come with Audi’s popular Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which should mean that despite its diminutive size the Q2 will still be a capable off-road vehicle.

Maserati Levante

The Levante marks Maserati’s first entry into the flourishing SUV market. Heading up against the Bentley Bentayga and Jaguar F-Pace, it is designed to offer the luxurious environment usually associated with a Maserati, but on a much bigger scale. Due to be available with a V8, V6 or one of three diesels, the Levante should be all things to all people.

Skoda Vision S

The Vision S concept marks the company’s first attempt at making a large SUV with four-wheel drive. Aston Martin DB11

The DB11 is a big car for Aston Martin. It comes to replace the popular - but ageing - DB9 which has been in production for 12 years now. Due to go on sale at the end of this year, the DB11 will feature a 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 engine producing 600bhp. Designed to mark the start of a new age of Aston supercars, it shows the beginning of a change in the manufacturer’s model line-up – with many of the company’s older models due to be replaced soon as well.

Volvo V90

The V90 joins the 90 Series range, with both estate and saloon built on Volvo’s ‘Scalable Platform Architecture’. Available with petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid set-ups, there’s also the choice of an all-wheel-drive mode, too. With Volvo’s history of producing reliable and good looking estate cars, we expect this one to be popular with families when it goes on sale later this year.

Bugatti Chiron

Everyone knows of the legendary Bugatti Veyron, the W16-powered, 250mph hypercar, which has spent 11 years at the top of the motoring chain. It’s time, however, for a new model. Enter the Chiron. Named after Bugatti’s most successful driver, Louis Chiron, this latest model is reported to produce more than 1,400bhp and is capable of 288mph. The Chiron has been completely redesigned, but does contain elements of the Veyron. Likely to be the car of the event, the Chiron should completely rewrite the rule book in terms of speed and acceleration.

Lamborghini Centenario

This limited-edition Lamborghini is rumoured to have sold out already, no doubt thanks to its classically exuberant styling and 6.5-litre engine. Taking elements from the Aventador, the Centenario marks the centenary of the birth of the company’s founder, Ferrucio Lamborghini.

The Grass Can Be Greener by Pippa Greenwood

Your garden should now be starting to look lush and green, with beds and borders beginning to come into their own. But if your lawn spoils it all, or you want to install one, now is the perfect time to get started. PreParing the site Remove all weeds, large stones, debris and any old grass, then dig or fork over thoroughly to remove all taproots of weeds. Kill off an old lawn or a weed infested site with weedkiller based on glyphosate, then strip it off or dig it in once it all dies off. Incorporate organic matter to improve moisture retention on sandy soils; on heavy soils dig in grit and organic matter for drainage. Next, firm the whole area by treading it over evenly in flat-soled boots, then rake thoroughly and remove stones or other debris from the surface, treading gently down again if necessary. Buying turf Buy turf from a reputable supplier which is suitable for your requirements – some, especially those including lots of dwarf ryegrass, are much tougher, while some contain a seed mixture for use in shade.

A ‘bowling green’ effect may look superb but will need more maintenance and be less hardwearing. Avoid cheaper turf as it can contain weeds, pests or diseases, or is simply not a good grass mixture. Arrange delivery of turf when you need it and never store for more than two days. It can remain rolled up for up to 24 hours, but for any longer unroll immediately, lay out flat on paving or plastic sheeting and water regularly. Laying the turf Lay turves closely together and do not allow the edges to overlap. For an even finish, joins on each row should be staggered, like bricks in a wall. Lay the first row of turf using the adjacent path or lawn edging to form a straight line to work to. Roll out each turf carefully so that the edge abuts onto its neighbour. Lay the next row, again ensuring that the long edges of each abut onto the long edges of the last row. To avoid damage, kneel on a plank placed over the previous row and continue until your new lawn is in position. If you need a small section of turf to complete a row, add this in the middle of a row rather

than at the end so it is less likely to be dislodged or dry out. For a curved edge lay the turves so that they overlap the new lawn edge and cut to shape. When finished, gently tamp the area over using the back of a rake and if any turves sink place some extra soil underneath until they are level. Finally, brush in a mixture of horticultural sand and finely sieved soil over the surface, ensuring that gaps between the turves are filled in. Care and maintenanCe Gently water the new lawn using a sprinkler, ensuring that the water penetrates right down to the root level. Water regularly in dry weather, particularly for the first couple of months whilst the roots establish and avoid walking on it during this time. Gadgets To Make Your Garden Grow Great gadgets for the green fingered

With the worst of the weather hopefully behind us, it’s time to turn to the great outdoors - and for many of us that means getting our gardens and hedges in shape. Technology can’t quite do the weeding or clipping for us just yet, but it can help in lots of other ways - including solving garden mysteries. If you’ve ever suspected that pets or other creatures have been damaging your plants, the TLC200 Green Camera is a weatherproof time lapse camera that’s designed to monitor your most precious plants and show you any skulduggery. At £139 it’s not cheap, but then neither are exotic plants that you might want to protect. As battery technology continues to improve, tool companies are coming up with ever more useful cordless devices for garden use. Bosch’s Isio Cordless Shrub/Grass Shear (£36) is a great example: it’s a rechargeable clipper for shrubs, hedges and grass, and there’s also an optional extension handle that means you can use it without bending down, and a sprayer tank that turns the device into a spray for pesticides or fertiliser. You can get all kinds of cordless garden tools now, ranging from hand-held clippers to enormous Please mention Helsby

and faintly frightening tree limb loppers, but look for Lithium Ion battery packs, not the vastly inferior and less efficient Nickel Cadmium (NiCD). We’ve been hearing about robot lawn mowers for years now, but every time we’ve looked at them we’ve been put off by the enormous price tags of around £2,000. That’s changing, and it’s now possible to get a decent sized robot lawnmower for around £800. At the time of writing the Worx WG790E is £774 (the RRP is £899) and the Flymo Robotic Lawnmower is £835 (£998 RRP). The Flymo has a working area of 400 square metres and cuts 30 square metres per hour, and because it’s virtually silent you can get it to do its stuff when everybody’s asleep - and its anti-theft system means you don’t need to worry that somebody will steal it while you’re in bed. It’s not completely autonomous - you need to fit a wire to show it the garden’s boundary, or it’ll get lost - but it’s starting to look like an attractive way to keep your lawn in great condition.

YouTube clips show drones’ propellers quickly clearing leaves from driveways, and while drones are more expensive than leaf blowers (from a few hundred pounds for a good one compared to around £30 for a blower), you can’t use a leaf blower as a mobile camera or fun toy when you’ve finished tidying your garden. One way to avoid cleaning up leaves is to prevent them from landing in the first place. Say hello to the Garden Groom Pro, which has clearly been inspired by those home haircut devices you see in catalogues: it’s a £99 hedge trimmer with its own collection bag, automatically storing and mulching the clippings instead of throwing them all over the path. You’re going to feel a bit silly using it but the reward is a relatively mess-free finish, although it’s worth pointing out that at 7Kg plus the weight of the cuttings bag it’s quite heavy for protracted use. There is a smaller version, the Garden Groom Midi, which is £59.99 and weighs 2.7Kg.

Cake and Bake Chocolate Chip and Nut Biscotti These crisp Italian biscuits are baked twice to give them that extra crunch. Serve them with strong coffee or a sweet dessert wine for dipping.

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, 350F, Gas 4. Line a

large baking sheet with baking parchment. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat together with a wooden spoon until very pale and • 100g caster sugar fluffy. Christmas Community Event in Helsby Saturday 3rd December. A group of villagers have got together and a committee has been formed in Helsby to organise a Christmas community event and a date has been set - Saturday 3rd December. They are hoping to put on a festive celebration for that day and evening and it sounds as if it could be a great event.. There are lots of ideas - A Christmas tree, lights, activities, stalls, food and drink, carol singing etc etc. At the moment, it is still in the planning stages and some money needs to be raised to get insurance etc in place for the event to go ahead which is what the committee are presently working on. If anyone in the community would like to get involved, sponsor, volunteer or make a donation towards the event, then they would be very welcome! Now into their 20th year, LIFTS are the Local In house FriendlyTransport Service serving the Helsby, Elton and Frodsham doctors surgeries. We accompany and provide transport to hospital appointments for those who would otherwise struggle to get there. Our service is invaluable to those who rely upon it and we provide hundreds of trips each year.
