Dear Friends, Wow! This month I’m celebrating 10 years of Helsby to Hand.... We first hit the streets in May 2005. That seems like a long time ago, our sons Charlie and Will were then 8 and 6 years and now we have big strapping 6 foot plus 18 and 16 year olds!! Richard, account manager at my printers congratulated me last week via Linked In: “Congratulations Sarah. 10 good years doesn’t happen by accident, it takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears (and a good printer.... :-)” That’s so true, thanks Richard; yes, there has been a lot of blood, sweat and tears along the way especially when my computer crashed last October and I lost 6 months of work due to a back up error! However, I wouldn’t have changed the last ten years for anything. Many of the businesses that advertise with me have now become great friends; I love my job and the flexibility it gives me around our family life. Thank you to all involved, I won’t go in to details because I did that when I celebrated my 100th edition last August but you all know who you are and without you Helsby to Hand wouldn’t be what it is today, so all I can say is MASSIVE THANKS! However saying that I do need to give one special mention to my fab husband Chris, who has a demanding job and yet, still on print week he rallies round when he’s home, washing and cooking! Thank you x I hope that you’ve enjoyed the last ten years also, so until next time...

Hobbies The fast growing ‘cult’ of small things By Kate McLelland When 89-year-old Nora Boll recently sold her collection of over 30 dolls’ houses, the auction sale sparked huge interest in the national media, bringing together collectors and dealers from all over the country. Nora, whose mother started the collection in 1925, had amassed hundreds of items over the years, including miniature chandeliers, little curtains made from parachute silk and even tiny rolls of toilet paper. John Anderson of auctioneers Anderson and Garland, who managed the sale, commented: “There is something of a cult hobby based on dolls’ houses and furniture”. He went on to add that in his experience a piece of miniature furniture such as a chest of drawers can sell at auction for more than its full-size counterpart. For serious hobbyists it’s an activity that allows for different specialties and interests, from kitting out period dolls’ houses in accurate historical detail to creating chic, contemporary interiors.

If you want to begin your own dolls’ house collection, this fascinating exhibition is a good place to start. Admission is free and further details can be found at www.vam.ac.uk. These miniature curiosities range from Victorian shop counters and sweet jars to tiny shower cubicles and jacuzzis. The magic of small things Whatever your reasons for collecting, there’s undoubtedly something magical about seeing the stuff of our everyday lives reduced to miniature scale. There’s an added sense of wonder when you consider the skill and patience that has gone into creating these small but perfectly formed items. Children’s author Lewis Carroll understood the childish fascination with shrinking down in size and used it to great effect in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. It’s a happy coincidence that the Victoria and Albert’s ‘Small Stories’ exhibition -sparking a renewed interest in dolls’ house history - has been staged in the 150th anniversary year of Carroll’s famous book.

Going Potty for Summer Plants by Pippa Greenwood Summer bedding plants are everywhere at this time of year and as soon as conditions are reliable enough, you can plant them out in your garden to create a wonderful, colourful display to last the whole summer long. I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not ring the changes and also include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden?

But if you don’t like the idea of bringing your loo or bathroom out into the garden, there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used as useful planters without necessarily making your neighbours think you have gone completely crazy. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak or has a loose handle? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end.

Waiting to board the plane for our weekend in Nice, my breathing became shallow, my hands felt clammy and my heart began to race. But it wasn’t the terror of being entombed in a silver tube burning gallons of kerosene in an illogical attempt to defy gravity, rather it was my other flying phobia - a brat sat in the seat behind. After our furious dash across the tarmac elbowing nonpriority boarders out of the way (we’d paid three quid extra to be treated like VIPs you see), we stored our luggage and settled into our seats. As Sarah began debating which variety of microwaved toasty to scald her mouth with, I commenced my nervous fidgeting. I craned my neck, scanning for infants.
“It’s not Mum and Dad I’m worried about, it’s that red faced urchin I don’t like the look of.” The smug thirty-something parents scanned the row numbers as they squeezed themselves inexorably nearer. Thirty one, thirty two, thirty.... three - there, perfect. And where do you think they ended up? You know it brother. The smiling cabin crew snapped the overheads shut and fussed everyone into their places as the Irish lilt of the pilot’s voice reassuringly purred our route over the PA system.

Should It Be Home Or Away For Grandparents? by Kate McLelland If you’ve ever watched TV programmes such as “Escape to the Country” or “A Place in the Sun: Home or Away”, you’ll appreciate the dilemma. Each week these shows focus on couples who dream of making a new start in life, either by moving to a different part of Britain or emigrating to a new country altogether. In many cases the show’s subjects are older couples: retirees or working people in their forties and fifties who want to change the pattern of their working lives. The show takes them to their dream location and follows them as they seek advice on property from a real estate professional. At the start of each programme we learn something about the couple’s lives and then eavesdrop as they explore various houses.

“I don’t think they’d ever considered that we might want to live somewhere else. Ellie spoke to her boss, who let her work flexi-time, and she found a good créche for the holidays. Maria Rymar was planning to move back to Estonia when her son-inlaw disappeared, leaving her daughter to bring up two small children on her own. She cancelled her flight, moving in with her daughter in order to help look after the children.
“My sister still lives in Estonia so I go back every summer for a few weeks,” Maria says. “This way I get to watch my grandchildren grow up, so I have the best of both worlds.” What becomes clear from the cases above is that every situation is different: what works for one family may not work for another. It seems counter-intuitive, but sometimes relocation can be a positive move when it comes to family relationships. With the stresses and strains of close-up living removed, family visits become more like holidays, celebrated with lots of outings and treats, while Skype calls via a webcam help to bridge the gaps between
visits. Although it may help to discuss future plans with your children, ultimately it’s up to you to decide on the best long-term solution for your health and happiness. But however you choose to go forward, one thing is certain: real life decisions are more complex and challenging than they appear on those reality TV shows!

Cake and Bake Chocolate Fondant Puddings These divine puds have a wonderful molten chocolate centre which oozes out as you cut into them. Take care not to overcook them and serve immediately otherwise the liquid centres will start to set. Serve with a dollop of tangy crème fraiche or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate indulgence!
Ingredients: • 100g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 100g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 100g good quality dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 2 large eggs • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 20g plain flour • Mint sprigs, to decorate • Few strawberries and chocolate shavings, to serve
1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C fan/Gas 6. Lightly grease 4 x 175ml capacity individual pudding basins with the extra softened butter and sprinkle with the extra caster sugar. Place on a baking tray. 2. Place the butter and chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for about 5 minutes. 3. Place the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and flour in a bowl and, using a hand-held electric whisk, beat together until smooth and creamy. Fold in the cooled chocolate mixture and pour into the prepared pudding basins. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the puddings are risen, puffy and just set on the outside- they should have a slight wobble and still be runny inside. 5. Leave for a few seconds then turn the puddings out onto serving plates. Decorate with mint sprigs and serve with the strawberries and chocolate shavings.

Frodsham Summer Festival 2015 10th, 11th and 12th July The event raises funds for local projects in the town. 10th July 6pm onwards live music night with Liverpool’s China Crisis headlining the event. Community Benefit Fund (CBF)

On 18th March 2015 Frodsham Transition Initiative held an Energy debate at which Peel Energy gave a presentation. Peel are commencing the installation of 19 wind turbines on Frodsham marshes and announced that a Community Benefit fund (CBF) would be set up to give rise to at least £100k per annum for 25 years. Peel Energy are keen that local communities should decide how they want this money to be spent for community benefit.
Live music from “Bobby the Crooner”, singing all the old favourites from Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Sinatra, Dean Martin. A chance to get out of the house, make new friends, have a laugh and of course enjoy a scone!
The FTI event was filmed and will be available on social media shortly. FTI continue to look for ways to keep local communities informed about energy supply, energy conservation and progress of the wind farm and the community benefit fund.

Living the 40’s dream! Miss Pitchy Patchy aka Hen Johnson arrived to talk to Frodsham W.I. on Thursday 2nd April clad from head to toe in vintage forties clothing. Miss Pitchy Patchy doesn’t just dress this way to talk about the period, she lives this way! She over-rides the embarrassment of her teenage sons and declares that this style suits her way of life. She kept the W.I. ladies fascinated describing clothing and lifestyle in the nineteen forties. Particularly amusing them when describing the problems of obtaining setting lotion these days and the difficulty of persuading a modern hairdresser to cut a style which looks just dreadful before it has been curled and set! The winner of this month’s competition which was for wartime tips and hints was the President, Vivien Shaw who had brought along “ mock crab” made to her mother’s wartime recipe. Next month’s meeting is on 7th May at Frodsham Community Centre.

SUCCESS: Graham Evans Secures Review of Tolls On Mersey Gateway & Silver Jubilee Bridge Following persistent and effective campaigning by Graham Evans, the Chancellor George Osborne is to re-examine tolls on the Silver Jubilee and Mersey Gateway Bridge for residents in the Cheshire West and Chester area. Work began on the Mersey Gateway Project in May 2014 with a completion date of autumn 2017 for a brand new six lane bridge over the Mersey from Runcorn to Widnes. The decision to toll both the Mersey Gateway bridge and the existing Silver Jubilee bridge was originally made in 2008. But Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale since 2010, has been campaigning for the Government to allow toll free access to both bridges. In 2014, it was announced that Halton residents will not have to pay the toll - and now Graham Evans has secured a re-examination of the toll to be completed this year. Mr Evans has said he will continue to campaign passionately throughout this process to make sure that residents in Cheshire West & Chester - including Frodsham, Helsby and Northwich - do not have to pay the toll. Commenting, he said: “This is great news for hardworking commuters and residents. In July 2014 I helped secure toll free access to the bridges for Halton residents, and I’ve been lobbying hard for Cheshire West residents.
