Little Overton’s Pre-School Easter Spring Fair is on Sunday 24th March, including an Easter Bonnet competition, so it’s time to get creating! Helsby resident, Gillean is holding a coffee morning on Saturday 23rd March in aid of The Countess of Chester Eye Clinic Fund, a chance to enjoy a pleasant morning whilst raising funds for this worthy cause.

E uine In uen a Outbrea In light of the recent con rmed Equine In uen a u outbreaks, we urge owners to be e tra vigilant of the clinical signs of the virus and to contact their vet immediately if they have any concerns.

what is the current concern
The increasing numbers of those diagnosed follows the identi cation of the disease at a yard in Cheshire in early February. At the time of going to print The Animal ealth Trust stated that there are currently 29 reported u outbreaks, in 17 counties across England and Scotland. This might not seem too serious but when compared to only three outbreaks of u for the whole of 2018, it becomes apparent why we all need to be vigilant.
How is the disease spread Equine In uen a, most commonly referred to as u, is a highly contagious viral disease. The virus can be spread via the airborne route by respiratory droplets, coughing and direct horse-to-horse contact. The virus can also be transmitted indirectly by contact with an infected horse via handlers e.g. hands, clothing or equipment. The incubation period for the disease is between one to ve days, which is why an in uen a outbreak can quickly spread. If you are walking or cycling through elds containing horses, please don t stroke them as you could inadvertently transfer the virus to other horses.
Clinical signs include Dry, harsh cough A raised temperature more than 38.5C which lasts for around 7-10 days Nasal discharge Loss of appetite Lethargy / depression Enlarged glands under the jaw orses may not show all of these signs. Vaccinated horses can also be affected, although the signs are usually milder.
What can you do to protect your horse There are simple precautionary measures we can all take in our routine day-to-day care and management to help prevent the spread of all contagious diseases: If you have any concerns, isolate your horse and call your vet. It is best to take immediate precautions rather than waiting and risk spreading a disease further. If your horse is not vaccinated speak to your vet. If your horse is currently vaccinated, but it has been longer than 6 months since the last vaccination, we recommend that you discuss a booster with your veterinary surgeon. Do not allow direct contact with unknown horses, for e ample when out at a show. ave designated equipment for each horse and de nitely do not share water or feed buckets with different horses. Wash your hands between dealing with different horses. Take your horse s temperature regularly and know what s normal. If your horse s temperature is raised, contact your vet. If travelling to events ensure all your equipment and trailer are cleaned and disinfected. Helsby Powered Wheelchair Appeal present 382nd chair The Powered Wheelchair Appeal from elsby Golf Club recently held another fantastic fundraising Chinese Banquet evening at the Fortune Palace in Delamere Forest. Around 100 club members, friends and supporters attended and saw the 382nd chair presented by the registered charity to 12 year old Emily Jayne Coulthard from Morecambe. Emily received a wheelchair from the Appeal 6 and a half years ago and since then has loved using the chair but has now outgrown it. She attends Our Ladies Catholic College in Lancaster and when not at school, she enjoys Wheelchair Basketball and swimming and her sporting hero is Paralympic swimmer Ellie Simmonds. Emily was accompanied on the night by her parents John and Janet and brother James and is looking forward to the further independence her new chair will bring. Joining us also on the night were the President of the Ellesmere Port and District Lions, Margaret Marsh and 2 committee members Malcolm and Rob.The Lions are great supporters of the appeal and it was good to have them with us. We were also delighted to welcome on the night Nicola and Andrew Bird and their twin sons Justin and Tristan. Justin received a chair from us back in 2006 and it has made an enormous difference to his life and since then, he has gone from strength to strength.The Bird family once again thanked everyone connected with the appeal for their support which has made such a difference to all their lives. After the presentation of the chair, we enjoyed another superb banquet provided by Pat and her restaurant staff. Members and friends took part in a qui , enjoyed a raf e, resulting in a total of just over 1,000 raised on the night this included a donation from Pat and the Fortune Palace team. Thank you to all our supporters for helping us to raise this fantastic amount, we are all very grateful! On the 27th March, 2019 Frodsham’s To ns omen’s Guild ill be celebrating its 75th Anniversary. The Guild was formed under the Chairmanship of Mrs lsie reening on March 2 th 1 after a meeting at the Bourne Methodist School in Main Street Frodsham. Over the years, many charities have bene ted from the money we have raised at our Guild concerts and the choir is still entertaining local groups and churches. Members will enjoy a celebratory cake at their AGM meeting on the 19th March, followed by afternoon tea at the Old Hall Frodsham on the 27th March. isitors are always welcome at our Guild meetings. These take place on the third Tuesday of the month at 7.30 pm in Frodsham Community Centre and include presentations from a wide variety of speakers.
