Short Story Magnus By Jackie Brewster “I’m not being funny but I’ve got washing out.” hiannon rubbed condensation off the kitchen window. “My sheets are going to smell of sausages.” “What’s that, dear ” Alan looked up from glossing the skirting. “They’re lighting a barbeque next door,” she said, “though it’s hardly the weather.” “Maybe their oven’s not working,” Alan said. “You know what it’s like when you move house.” “Shall I pop round and say something ” hiannon asked. udging by the fact that hiannon had been spying through the window all weekend, Alan might have guessed that she would concoct an excuse to inspect the new neighbours. “Why don’t I just bring the washing in ” Alan suggested. He felt that complaining about sausages wasn’t a great way to welcome anyone, especially not a celebrity, to the street. “That’s no use,” hiannon muttered, “you can see even less from the garden.” “That’s not what I meant,” said Alan. “If you really want to know who it is, why don’t you just go and say hello ” “I don’t want to come across as pushy,” hiannon said dismissively. “But you’re happy to come across as moany ” Alan laughed. The new couple had moved in on Friday, and Alan had yet to catch a glimpse of them. Their old neighbours, the Bingleys,

while being useless at the pub qui , were always happy to feed his tortoise, Magnus, while he was away. He wasn’t certain how he was going to adapt to having celebrity neighbours. “How do you know he’s famous ” he asked, joining hiannon by the window. “From the Bingley’s estate agent,” hiannon said. “ ook, here he comes now.” They stood on their tiptoes to see the top of a bald head behind the overgrown clematis. “With a head that shape,” hiannon said, “I can’t help thinking of that Captain icard.” “You mean atrick Stewart ” Alan said. “Yes, him off Star Trek,” hiannon nodded. “I hope he’s going to prune the Bingley’s clematis.” They were startled by the sound of the doorbell. A dishevelled lady stood on their doorstep. “Sorry to bother you,” she smiled. “I’m Brenda. We’ve just moved in next door.” “Welcome to the street,” Alan said. “How are you settling in ” “You know how these things are.” She ran a hand through her unruly hair. “I’m afraid I have to start with an apology. Our oven’s broken and atrick came up with the idea of having a barbeque.” hiannon nudged Alan in the ribs. “I’ve noticed your washing’s out,” Brenda continued. “Sorry if it smells of burgers.”

“Don’t worry about that,” hiannon smiled conspiratorially. “I hear your husband’s a bit of a celebrity.” “That got around fast,” Brenda said in surprise. “I’d prefer it if you didn’t mention it though.” “We totally respect his privacy,” Alan nodded, then added. “After all, he’s boldly gone where no man has gone before.” Brenda raised her eyebrows. “Will atrick be around much or off filming ” hiannon chipped in. “Maybe rehearsing a play ” “He’s not really into amateur dramatics.” Brenda frowned. “Besides, his job at Argos keeps him busy.” There was a confused silence between them. “So, he isn’t Captain icard ” hiannon asked eventually. Brenda stared at them. Alan cleared his throat. “How exactly is your husband famous ” “I’ll tell you,” Brenda sighed. “But like I said, don’t mention it, or he’ll never stop going on about it.” The couple leaned in closer. “Years ago,” Brenda began, “he was a contestant on Mastermind.” “ eally ” said hiannon cheerfully. “What was his chosen specialist subject ” “Tortoises,” Brenda smiled wanly. Alan rocked on his heels with pleasure. He liked his new neighbours already. 11

Cake and Bake Banana and Walnut Loaf If you have overripe bananas in the fruit bowl then donâ€™t bin them â€“ just whizz up this delicious moist loaf cake instead. It will keep for up to 5 days wrapped in greaseproof paper or foil and stored in an airtight tin.

Ingredients: 75g unsalted butter, softened 75g light soft brown sugar 225g self-raising flour 2 tsp ground mixed spice Â˝ tsp baking powder 3 medium eggs 75g walnut halves, roughly chopped 2 large ripe bananas, peeled and mashed with 2 tsp lemon juice Icing sugar, to dust

And the better the soil, the better the plants will perform, and the bigger the flowers and the heavier the crops. So getting your soil into good condition and keeping it well looked after is key to great gardening. At this time of year there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be really useful. It may wreak havoc with some of your plants, but if you garden on a heavy clay soil it can save you a lot of work. If you roughly dig or fork over an empty bed or part of your vegetable plot, the large lumps of clay soil will be acted on by the frosts and will break down somewhat, making them more manageable in the process.

Make sure that you bring in good quality manure, with as few additives as possible not too many wood shavings for instance, as these can form a high percentage of stable manure and make it far less useful. If possible, view the manure in situ the last thing you want to do is bring in manure which is riddled with weeds, especially the really troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years there have been problems with manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control

weeds in pastureland, which can devastate plants, often killing them. Try to source manure from someone local who you know, and can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure needs to be well-rotted before being used in the garden ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed your soil and improve its condition at the same time. They will also help to suppress weeds and protect the soil from erosion in a windswept spot. They work especially well on parts of the garden where you do not have plants growing year round as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil, where they rot down

and release all sorts of useful materials. Check out what is available by looking in the seed catalogues and get sowing later this year there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. A Wrose by any other name … by Kate McLelland If British towns and villages lived up to their names, you could visit Coat or Mat in ye to buy a new outfit then pop along to ry to satisfy your reedy t, before heading to the pub to le own a pint of Beer You may think these are all places invented by the late Sir Terry ratchett, but in fact the names mentioned here belong to real villages in Devon, Essex, Norfolk, Somerset and Yorkshire. The K’s roads are littered with signposts pointing out destinations that sound funny, rude or let’s face it utterly weird. But if you’ve ever wondered why the original residents chose to burden their home town or village with such a name, the answer is, they probably didn’t. Since the name first appeared hundreds or even thousands of years ago, it will have undergone a gradual transformation, being mispronounced or added to by each new group of settlers.

The Anglo Saxons were practical in their approach to naming, describing geographical features or the si e or type of settlement a traveller could expect to find. The Dorset village of rat y Bottom (voted second in a 20 2 poll to discover Britain’s worst place name) refers to a hollow place in the landscape where the soil is rough, while the modern city name Birmin am is made up of three different elements the given name Beorma, the word ‘inga’ (meaning family or tribe) and ‘ham’, meaning homestead. The Normans, who invaded in 0 , were known to rename places to suit their own tastes. For example a village in Essex known as le et (‘foul pit’ in Anglo Saxon) was renamed as Bea mont (‘fair hill’), while Bea lie (‘fine place’) in Hampshire was given its name by a Norman French landowner who loved the local landscape. originally a sacred spot for the worship of the god Thunor (the name means ‘Thunor’s Grove’). Throughout the K you’ll also find ancient villages linked to church names. This often occurs when a settlement becomes large enough to warrant the development of a second church. The thought of leaving friends and going to a new school, coupled with the anxiety of the unknown, can make moving house very unsettling for children. Kate Duggan recently moved house with ten days’ notice. (She wouldn’t recommend it.) Here are some of her top tips for helping children to cope with a big move.

O R BO C R While you may be desperate to declutter ahead of the move, your child may not cope with the extra pressure of giving up toys and clothes, even those that have been languishing in a cupboard for months. Don’t force them into getting rid of things if they don’t want to. You could suggest packing items that they’re not sure about into a box for the loft, with the agreement that you’ll both open it and sort through everything a few months after the move.

O O RC Explain why you’re moving house, whether it’s due to needing to pay less rent or because you’ve found a better area to live in. Talk about how your child is feeling about the move.
