Short Story The Ice Sculpture Mel was filling vases with peonies for the top table when a lady wearing huge sunglasses strode into to the marquee. “This all looks rather tragic,” she announced to no one in particular. Behind her, a delivery man wheeled a squeaky trolley carrying something the size of a sheep hidden beneath a white sheet. runting, the man lifted the heavy object onto the table reserved for wedding gifts and handed the lady a clipboard to sign. “How quaint,” she said, “in A we’re completely digital, you never see pens and paper anywhere.” His task complete, the man scurried out of the marquee as though in a hurry to escape. “Are you here for the wedding ” Mel asked, placing the last vase in position. “ ou bet.” The lady removed her glasses and surveyed the marquee. “I’m auline, the bride’s aunt. ust own in.” She then fixed her steely gaze upon Mel. “Is there time to do something about these sorrylooking owers ” Mel held her tongue. She’d been up since four decorating the marquee for her friend Abbie’s big day, and had just been congratulating herself on how beautiful it looked. “This desperately needs touch of glamour, wouldn’t you say ” auline said. “In Hollywood we know how to throw a wedding.” “Is that where you’re from ” Mel asked, hoping to change the
subject. “We moved out there six years ago,” auline said smugly. “Our pool is bigger than this whole tent.” “Cool.” Mel nodded, already tiring of Abbie’s boastful relative. “Make yourself useful and remove this sheet,” auline said, pointing at the strange object she’d just had delivered. “Be careful, what’s underneath costs more than you earn in a year.” uietly seething, Mel gently took hold of the corners of the sheet. “Won’t it melt ” she asked, noticing puddles of water already forming on the table. “Well, hurry up and turn on the air conditioning.” auline glanced irritably around the tent for the non-existent air conditioning unit. “Which reminds me, you need to rearrange the seating plan so that I’m closest to it.” “I’m sure Abbie will love it,” Mel said, feeling not at all sure. “ erhaps I should let her know you’re here ” She had a sinking feeling her friend’s big day was about to become all about managing the needs of Auntie auline and her awful ice sculpture. “Abbie ” auline asked. “Who on earth’s Abbie ” “The bride,” Mel said dumbfounded. “The bride is Sara, you silly girl,” auline said hotly, “and she’s getting married here, today, the twenty-first of une.” The two women stared at each other. Coconut Ricotta Seafood StuffedCurry Pork
Serves 4 Ready in 50 minutes
Full of avour, this speedy curry is great for a summer supper. Replace the asparagus tips with green beans or sugar snap peas, if liked. Serve with boiled noodles or steamed Thai jasmine rice.
Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan over tbsp vegetable oil a medium heat and fry the shallots for shallots, peeled and minutes until golden. Stir in the Thai green halved curry paste and cook for minute. - tbsp Thai green curry paste (see Tip) Add the potatoes, carrot, coconut milk, g new potatoes, stock and soy sauce. This delicious sweet flan is great for an American-themed barbeque or summer party.
Ingredients:
1. To make the pastry, sift the our into a large bowl
and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the our until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and orange g plain our zest. g unsalted butter, 2. Make a well in the centre and add the egg yolk and chilled and diced tbsp cold water. Mix with a round-bladed knife to tbsp caster sugar a rough dough, adding a few more drops of water if tsp orange zest needed. Screening programmes are designed to identify health problems at an early stage so that they can be treated swiftly, before they become more serious. The NHS offer a number of free screening programmes, beginning before we are even born. SCREENINGS RING PREGNANCY If you are pregnant, you will usually be offered a blood test to screen for hepatitis B, I and syphilis at your booking appointment with the midwife. Ideally, this test is done before you’re weeks pregnant so that any infection can be treated quickly, reducing the likelihood of it passing to your baby. ou will also be offered screening for thalassaemia and sometimes, sic le cell disease, before weeks too. These are inherited blood diseases and it’s important to establish whether you’re a carrier.
Between and weeks of pregnancy: a ‘dating scan’. This ultrasound checks your baby’s development and confirms your due date and if you’re expecting more than one baby. History How We Fell in Love with Perfume cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient gyptians believed perfume was ‘the sweat of the gods’.
The word perfume is derived from the atin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the omans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them. Used significantly across Asian cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script.
Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In , the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that th century Crusaders brought back perfume from alestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by urope’s nobility. The Sun King ouis I , who ruled France from , loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’.
