A fun filled day and evening with stalls, activities, live music, craft beer and food served all day. Frodsham Panto Group are holding auditions for their next production, Cinderella on the 16th and 18th June, with a chance to meet the production team on the 14th. Budding actors and dancers - further details are on the Community Pages along with various Summer Fairs, Cream Tea afternoon, other local events and news. Ban screen time before bed The blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets and other digital devices has been found to disrupt sleep. A Norwegian study of 10,000 teenagers found that the more time the teenagers spent on electronic devices during the day, the less sleep they got. Nowadays grandparents are proving a match for their grandchildren when it comes to posting comments and uploading photos to social networking sites such as Facebook. Social media’s fastest growing demographic is older users. When the seniors’ website silversurfers.com recently surveyed over three thousand of its members, it found that 81% of the sample checked their Facebook accounts more than once a day. But what if you haven’t yet ventured into social networking? How do you know where to start? These days, when everyone’s talking about ‘tweeting’, and ‘DMs’, or information appearing in ‘timelines’ or on ‘walls’, it’s hard to admit that you haven’t a clue about how it all works. If you’ve always wanted to dip your toe into the social networking pool - but fear you’ll drown in a sea of unfamiliar terms and bizarre practices - here’s a quick guide to three of the most popular platforms:

Cake and Bake Apricot Jam Swiss Roll Great for a teatime treat, this light sponge cake is best eaten on the day it’s made. For a chocolate version replace 25g of the flour with 25g sifted cocoa powder.

Ingredients:

1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas 6. Lightly

Five gold artworks, with a value of at least £1,000 each, were hidden around the area and clues to their location were encoded in paintings hanging at the town’s 20-21 Arts Centre. Everyone loves the idea of finding hidden treasure, but these days opportunities are not just limited to rare events like the Scunthorpe gold hunt. It’s now possible to take part in well-organised hobbies where you can use your skills to track down hidden items or find concealed information.

If you enjoy following a trail and exploring new locations, not to mention the thrill of using your detective skills to find something that would otherwise remain hidden, then you’ll be well rewarded by these exciting outdoor hobbies. However you don’t always need the code-breaking skills of Alan Turing or the high-tech powers of GPS to find what you are looking for. When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. It is all very well creating a garden with lots of straight lines and wacky bits of metalwork, but if you want to really let your garden take the strain, then concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax?

It has been a pleasure for the team to work on this project. When Sheila purchased the property, it was taken back to brick and has undergone a full refurbishment. We have really enjoyed being a part of the project and helped turn it back into what is now, a stunning home.

If you want to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off, our top ten tips will help. 1 Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar or do you prefer it close to hand and perhaps picked up? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you can invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home.

There’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling, but you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. 5 When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence and some objects may simply not fit well into the group.

8 Small objects can look lost in most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a cabinet or niche, on a side table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf. 9 If displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall, start by laying your potential group on the floor. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it. 10 Finally, stand right back - does your display need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to change things around, and try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. It’s an important investment in your health and safety, however, offering protection and reassurance if something goes wrong when you’re a long way from home. The cost of holiday insurance depends on a number of factors including your age, the length of time you’ll be away, whether or not you’re travelling alone, and the types of activity on the agenda. China Pandas in Chengdu By Solange Hando Only 1,000 giant pandas are believed to survive in the wilds of China, 80% of them in the south-west province of Sichuan where, in 1987, a Research and Breeding Centre for Giant Pandas was set up in a northern suburb of Chengdu. From the original six pandas rescued at the start of the programme, nearly 100 have been successfully bred, thus increasing the population without affecting those in the wild. Today this awardwinning centre is one of the best places in the world to see giant pandas in a semi-wild environment.

In this natural environment the pandas are not as pristine and white as their cuddly toy counterparts, but despite their somewhat muddy bottoms you can’t help falling in love with those big dark eyes that seem to look straight into your soul. Up front you’ll sit shoulder to shoulder with your passenger, but there’s ample leg room and the driving position is comfortable. Autonomous emergency braking – which warns, then stops you, if it senses a crash – as well as a smart torque vectoring system that improves handling by braking individual wheels are also available. You may think the Kia Picanto is the car most likely to be driven by your grannie, and you’d be right. But now the manufacturer is looking to ditch that blue rinse image and target a younger age group with its suitably spiced up city car. Designed to attract youthful buyers, the refreshed model teams sporty looks with a more focused driving style to woo young professionals to part with their cash. But are the tweaks enough? Looks and image Well, there’s no doubt Kia has worked hard to liven things up. There’s an extended ‘tiger nose’ grille, the likes of which we’ve seen spread across the maker’s range, smart LED driving lights and a large air intake at the front.

What’s under the bonnet? Three engine options are offered: a 1.0-litre, 67bhp, 89g/ km, three-cylinder; a 1.2-litre, 84bhp, 104g/km four-cylinder; and a 1.0-litre turbo charged, 100bhp version of the three cylinder. Sadly we didn’t get the chance to try the latter – that one will be arriving later – but with a promise of 60mph in 10 seconds, it should be a riot. Both the 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre are punchy little units and more than adequately powered to push the Picanto along with little drama. Our pick – but only just – would be the 1.2-litre which hits 60mph in 12 seconds, tops out at 107mph and returns 61.4mpg. It’s mildly spicier than the entry-level option and just a tad more fun. Manual and automatic options are available across the range.

Overall there’s a noticeable improvement in both ride and handling, largely thanks to reduced weight and a stiffer body, but whether that’s suitable for you will depend on your driving style.

VaLue for money As this was an early test of a left-hand drive model there were few details as to what options will feature on UK models. At the time, Kia’s UK boss explained each market is given a menu to pick from and said his team was working on refining what they’ll take. We do know that this will follow the conventional Kia strategy of one, two, and three levels of specification and that the GT-Line, driven here, will slot between two and three. In the GT-Line model we tried at the Spanish launch, a seveninch media screen, wireless charging for mobiles, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay all featured, along with a heated steering wheel and seats, climate control and electric windows and mirrors.

Graham Evans finishes 6th consecutive London Marathon Weaver Vale Conservative Graham Evans crossed the line to finish his sixth consecutive London Marathon on Sunday (23 April) raising over two thousand pounds for charity. Graham ran alongside thousands of runners on the gruelling 26.2 mile course, running in support of Muscular Dystrophy UK and the Army Benevolent Fund – The Soldiers’ Charity raising over two thousand pounds. Commenting, Graham said: “I’m really pleased to have finished the marathon again. It’s a terrific event which raises millions for good causes and there is no greater feeling than running up the mall to the finish line hearing all the spectators cheering you on – a rarity for a politician! It truly is an honour to help raise money for these very special causes. I am also very proud of Mrs Evans who finished with a Personal Best for her second marathon – next year I am sure she will be hot on my heels.”

WEAVER VALE W.I SPRING GROUP MEETING REPORT Wednesday 17th May. A title of “Britain HAD talent” had the members of Weaver Vale intrigued. Neil Hurst had travelled from Leeds to share his career in theatre, film and television. Neils family, over many generations, had been involved with the theatre and he brought to life occasions and incidents both humorous and poignant. He started with Lupino Lane and Gracie Fields. His wonderful signing voice soon had the members singing along with him. Looking through old theatre programmes he found out his Monday 5th June grandmother had been in many stage shows, films and musicals with famous performers. Traditional Afternoon Tea His grandfather was also in show business and both of his parents. His mother had been Elton Church Hall a circus performer before moving to theatrical 2 - 4pm productions. It was a very uplifting meeting and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole audience. Arrangements for the Autumn meeting are almost finalised and will be released shortly.

Frodsham’s “Festival In The Park” - 2017. Once again, the Rotary Club of Frodsham & Helsby will be involved with Frodsham’s “ Festival in the Park” which entails working very closely with Castle Park Arts Centre, members of Frodsham Town Council and of course Cheshire West and Chester Council in order to put together this wonderful Community Project. Sunday the 2nd of July 2017 is the chosen day, and bearing in mind the good weather last year, we are trying to arrange another fine day so everyone can enjoy a day at the Festival! The event will be “Officially Opened” at 12.30pm by Frodsham’s recently appointed Town Mayor, and as with previous years the event will have three focal points. Firstly, as with last year, the Festival will incorporate the Finish of “Frodsham Downhill Run”, which we expect will involve well over a hundred competitors, comprising both young, old and family runners. Secondly, within Castle Park Art’s Centre, where the Galleries and Shops will be open for all to visit along with several Art and Craft displays, and of course some shared live entertainment from those performing on the main stage. The third area will be Castle Park itself, directly in front of the Main House, where we will have the main stage along with the stalls and displays from some 40 Trust’s, Organizations, Society’s, Club’s, Group’s, etc. Naturally, the entertainment of children and the young will also be an important feature, with rides and attractions in the children’s “Fun Fair” area along with shows and features designed for the slightly older children of the family. With all this in prospect, we hope that a good day out will be had by both residents and visitors alike, so please come along. Admission is free, however donations will be welcomed. Impressive home showing for Luke Browning at Oulton Park Teenage racer Luke Browning produced his best performance of the year to date as the Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship headed to Oulton Park for the fourth round of the season. Luke, from Kingsley, went into the weekend seeking to impress at his home circuit and showed he would be in the mix towards the sharp end of the grid with an impressive performance in free practice, where he lapped within seven-tenths of a second at the wheel of his Richardson Racing-run car. A change in weather conditions provided a fresh challenge for qualifying on a damp circuit, with Luke posting the tenth quickest time to put himself in a solid position for the opening race of the weekend. “Qualifying was tricky with the conditions but from tenth on the grid I felt confident going into race one,” he said. “The pace was really

strong at the start but then I got forced wide and dropped places which left me with work to do. However, I kept pushing hard and was pleased to finish up with a top eight finish and it was good to be on the rookie podium. That result gave me more confidence going into race two but unfortunately I was tipped into a spin when someone else turned in on at me at the chicane and it meant I lost loads of time and dropped to the back. From then, I just pushed really hard to close the gap to the guys ahead and I knew when I caught them that I had to get past as quickly as I could. To get back up to twelfth place having been as far as behind as I was after the first lap is really good and I think there are a lot of positives to take away from the weekend. If things had gone my way, I know that we could also have taken a lot more away from it, and I’ll look to build on these performances when we go to Croft for the next meeting.” Luke ended the weekend just ten points away from the top ten in the championship standings.
