The look on her face told me that my reasoning was completely off beam. How had I managed to stagger through to my early middle years without exposure to that most terrible of transatlantic imports - The Prom? “Tom, it’s a very important milestone in a girl’s life.” “Yes but she didn’t go to Rydell High and her name’s not Sandra Dee.” “Don’t be silly, now jump in, we’re off to chose the dress.” “I can’t believe my opinion is of any value.”

I was approached by a formidable woman sporting sparkly spectacles secured around her neck by means of a gold chain. That’s my daughter over there; will you have it in her size?” The woman flipped on her specs and gawped at the Apple Of My Eye, then at the dress. “Yes we have her size. “Now Tom, aren’t they gorgeous!” “Where’s this prom being held? Billy Smart’s Circus? And how on earth are you supposed to walk in those?” My nemesis with the glittering glasses interjected, “Oh, they’re not for walking in sir, they are what is known as a dinner shoe.”

Safely home (after a lie down) I was offered a restorative cup of tea (two sugars). “Right, that’s the Prom Dress sorted. Now we just have to sort out her After Prom dress.”
“Yes. Apart from the After Prom party.” “Now I’ve heard of them, is that where a load of giggly drunk teenagers descend on some poor parents house and trash it?” “Come on Dad,” said Hannah, “we won’t trash anything, promise.” “Now Tom, don’t worry, leave everything to us, and stop crying...”

Nature Notes by local Helsby Resident
“Deja Vu”
It’s mid July 2015 and I’m having late lunch with my daughter, my back to the window. The garden is a junk yard of children’s delights (some made by me) sandpit in the shape of a boat, trampoline, wooden house on stilts with a slide back down, 3 guinea pig runs and hutches, sometimes fresh horse poo when my daughter has brought her horse in, long grass, over grown bushes. But there are birds all the time. Suddenly she put her finger to her lips and pointed behind me and there on the window feeder, not more than eight feet from my back are two goldfinches feeding on the seeds she’d put out.
I’d been looking out at my front lawn that had gone to seed and there was a goldfinch enjoying a feast of grass seed. I quietly opened the front door and set up my telescope with a 40x lens and told her to come quietly and take a look, leaving her homework. Twice she refused to be disturbed but the third time it was a demand to do as she was told. She came reluctantly but as soon as she saw it in all it’s beauty she excitedly ran to fetch her mother from upstairs and insisted she came also. 33 years later the roles are reversed, but she couldn’t remember the incident! My daughter is now giving her 81 year old dad booklets of walks in wales and reserves to visit. I’ve recently taken my friend John to one of those reserves at Gronant, near Prestatyn. There were little terns and arctic terns everywhere bringing back sand eels for their mates and young. Outside the reserve were ringed plovers on the shingle calling to their tiny chicks to hide. To an unpractised eye decades ago I thought these were tiny balls of wool blowing along the sand, no larger than one’s thumb nail. How can such a tiny thing give one such a thrill and make your day?

Lawn Bowls is a gently-paced team game that – like cricket matches on the village green – seems to reflect a British way of life that has barely changed in hundreds of years. Bowling is popular for two main reasons: it’s a highly social game, offering a strong sense of camaraderie within the club itself and the potential to develop wider networks through inter-club matches. It is also accessible to new members, being one of the easiest team sports to pick up (although regulars will tell you it takes time and skill to perfect the techniques required).

Toilet Training A Puppy You’ve chosen your puppy, and now it’s time to bring them home for the first time. It’s an exciting prospect but you’ll need plenty of patience, especially when it comes to toilet training. Here are a few ideas to help you train your pup, and minimise any damage to your home. Choose a specific outdoor toilet area Your dog will soon get used to the idea of going to the toilet outside, but having a specific spot will help to speed up the process. You’ll need to take them to this area every time they need the toilet, without fail, and give them a treat as soon as they’ve been. How do you know when they need to go? After a while you’ll be able to spot the

signs, but until then it’s a good idea to take them outside first thing in the morning, and when they’ve eaten or had a drink of water, but generally at regular hourly intervals throughout the day at first. When accidents happen Accidents are inevitable at this stage, but it’s important not to tell off your puppy. Just take them to the designated toilet area as soon as possible to keep the message consistent. Rewarding your dog when they do the right thing is far better than reacting negatively when they don’t. You wouldn’t want them to be frightened of you, and by using positive responses you’ll soon be able to form a strong bond with your new pet.

Longer days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, writes Katherine Sorrell Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family.
In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and save money with woodchips in the children’s play area.

If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property.

What are the implications for your personal finances?
With so much speculation about the economic implications of leaving the EU, you are probably wondering what the effect will be on your personal finances, whether we stay or go. The problem is there’s a lack of hard data or previous experience on which to model financial predictions for leaving the EU, so clear judgement is already hampered. David Cameron’s negotiations at the summit earlier this year mean that we retain the pound if we stay in Europe, and won’t be forced into adopting the euro at any future point. Many top business people and political figures are campaigning strongly to leave, and envision a more stable UK having regained our independence - negotiating trade deals on our own terms, and taking back the control we once had.

Are you ready to control everything in your house with a smartphone app?
In the 1930s, magazines predicted a really exciting thing called the smart home - a home where everything was automated and easy to control. It’s taken its time to turn up, but smart home technology is finally here. From your boiler to your light bulbs, there’s an app for almost everything. Most smart home technology is designed to connect to your Wi-Fi network, either directly or via a little box called a hub. Once it’s connected you can then control it from your phone. There are smart thermostats, such as Google’s Nest and British Gas’s Hive, that can automate your heating and even turn the heater up and down when you’re away from home. There are smart bulbs, such as Philips’ Hue, that can completely change the colour of your room with a single tap of your phone’s screen. There are smart baby monitors such as BabyPing that stream video of your (hopefully!) sleeping child to your phone, and there is a whole selection of smart cameras that you can use to monitor your house.

Summer Pudding Serves 6-8
Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling time This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche.

Coast to Coast - in a day? Two local lads, Jonny Lewis of Elton and Paul Porter of Helsby, have signed up for Open Cycling’s Coast to Coast In a Day event on June 25th supported by local company Mad Jak Joinery. This tough event requires entrants to cover an iconic 150 mile road ride, usually cycled over 4 or 5 days, in just 1 day. The stunning route begins in Seascale and the mountainous Western Lake District, before going through the Yorkshire Dales, across the Vale of York and finally the Valleys of the North York Moors, finishing by the sea in Whitby. Sam Sterling of Mad Jak Joinery has been only too happy to supply official CTC cycling kit for this event. Through their efforts, Jonny and Paul are hoping to raise money for Arthritis Research UK and have set up a JustGiving page at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/boys-love-lycra We have set a target of £500 – any contributions gladly received!

ROTARY LOCAL COMMUNITY GRANTS SCHEME The Rotary Club of Frodsham and Helsby is launching a Local Community Grants Scheme. This is a scheme designed to offer individuals and groups within Frodsham, Helsby and the surrounding area the opportunity to apply for a grant to support a specific project or activity. The Club has a long history of being active and supportive in the local community and decided to trial this scheme as a way of furthering this support. In the application process, the applicant(s) will need to demonstrate that there is a benefit to them and/or the local community, which is derived from the activity or project for which funds are being sought. However, the application cannot be part of on-going funding for a project. Closing date for applications is 30th June 2016. Applicants under the age of 18 will require parental consent. Manley Open Garden Trail
Several gardens in Manley will be open to view. Tickets are £5 per adult, giving access to all gardens that are open. Tickets / afternoon teas & gardening related stalls at Manley Village Hall. Sunday 12th June Manley Parish Field 10-12 noon 5 A-Side football match for local schools followed by a Thanksgiving Service at 12.30pm for the life of her Majesty the Queen - all are welcome. This will be followed at 1pm by an Inter-Village Cricket Match between teams from Manley, Alvanley, Mouldsworth & Ashton Hayes. Free tutored tennis and bowling sessions available. Afternoon Teas will be served on the field.
“Festival In The Park” – 3rd July 2016 Frodsham’s annual “Festival in the Park” will once again be staged by Rotary in Frodsham & Helsby working closely with Castle Park Arts Centre, Frodsham Town Council and Cheshire West and Chester Council on Sunday 3rd July. This wonderful community project will officially be opened at 12.30 pm by Cllr. Mallie Poulton, Frodsham’s next Town Mayor and, as with previous years, the event will have several focal points: Firstly, the festival will incorporate the finish of the “Frodsham Downhill Run”, which starts at 12.30 pm from the Memorial on Frodsham Hill. We expect this will involve well over two hundred competitors comprising young, old and family runners. Secondly, the galleries and shops in Castle Park Art’s Centre will be open with arts and craft displays, and live entertainment from those performing on the main stage will be featured. The main stage along with the stalls and displays from some forty organisations, societies, clubs, and groups will be directly in front of Castle Park House. As usual, children and the young will be entertained throughout the day with rides and attractions in the fun fair along with shows and features designed for older children of the family. Additionally, former Town Mayor and Rotarian Allen Wales will be giving a talk on the Battle of the Somme in Castle Park House at 2.00pm and 3pm. With all this in prospect, we anticipate a great day will be had by residents and visitors alike, so please come along. Admission is free, but donations at the gates to Rotary charities and good causes will be welcomed.
