The Cottage Tea Shop gets a re vamp... With new signage, interior decor and now extending beyond the conservatory into a beautiful, tranquil courtyard - perfect for those people who like to enjoy some fresh air, especially if you’ve been inside at work all morning! Donna, along with most of her six staff have been at The Cottage Tea Shop for eight years and during this time the café has expanded and can now seat up to 80 people. Often people Delicious Cakes to tempt! look in from the pavement and see that the front room is full and don’t appreciate that there is additional seating beyond. Everything is homemade on the premises by Donna, including all of the delicious cakes displayed, which all looked yummy, especially the huge Lemon Meringue pie! Have You Got The Baking Bug? By Kate McLelland butter, sugar, eggs and flour can be ascribed to the BBC’s now legendary TV show, The Great British Bake Off, which features a team of amateur bakers (observed by expert judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry) taking part in progressively harder baking challenges over a period of ten weeks. The show promises to attract an audience of over eight million viewers when Series 5 is broadcast later this year.

In recent years baking has become a bit of a national obsession. With events such as the Sugarcraft, Cake Decorating & Baking Show visiting large conference venues in London, Birmingham and Manchester, new cakecraft shops opening in our high streets and countless community bake-offs taking place all over the country, it would appear that the UK has been well and truly bitten by the baking bug.

The first episode of GBBO traditionally kicks off with “Cakes” and it’s fitting that this aspect of baking should open the competition, as cake making and decorating has become one of the most popular hobbies in Britain today. Perhaps it is the combination of cookery and artistic skills that has captured the public’s imagination. The current trend is to create specialist cakes that are not only delicious to eat, but beautiful to look at, and bakers are now using a range of specialist tools and equipment to help them achieve stunning effects for their cake creations.

Cupcakes are especially popular: decorated with butter cream icing, sprinkled with edible glitter and often topped with exotic decorations, they can easily be turned into individual, quirky masterpieces. These little cakes can even be displayed on a multi-layered framework (a “cupcake tower”) in place of a traditional wedding cake. The name “cupcake” first appeared in an American cookery book published in 1796. They were so named because they were baked in individual pottery cups, ramekins or moulds, the size of a small teacup. Their popularity was revived in the 2000s thanks to the US TV series “Sex and the City”, when lead characters Carrie and Miranda scoffed cupcakes from New York’s famous Magnolia Bakery as they discussed their love lives. The craze is still going strong today, with UK artisan bakeries getting in on the act, using ever more exotic ingredients and themes to tempt us.

Or maybe your shape is nearly as long as it is wide with straight sides, a broad forehead and a defined jaw, with minimal curves. That means you’ve got a square shaped face.

Here’s a list of styles that will suit your newly discovered face shape best: Oval This is the most versatile face shape, you’ll look great with long, short, straight or

curly hair. Try out a variety of looks and rest assured that you’ll pull them off. Round Choose long, straight styles with layers that are cut at the jaw line and that extend down to the ends. A graduated bob that is cut onto the face can work well - as long as it is cut shorter at the back of the head. Oblong Fringes - both straight and side swept - can work really well on long faces. If you’re in to short styles choose an angular bob with short

Mediterranean Magic by Pippa Greenwood www.pippagreenwood.com If you can’t get away this year, how about creating your own Mediterranean hotspot in your garden? Even if you do manage to escape to the sun for a week or two this year, you’ll still have the rest of the summer at home and a little slice of Italy, France or Greece outside your back door will bring happy memories flooding back. The first thing to do is to choose the sunniest spot available – it’ll not only make sitting out there more enjoyable, but will also mean that you can install some serious sun-loving plants too. Painting the nearby house, shed or garage wall with white masonry paint will help to create the right atmosphere and look. At the same time it will help to reflect our sunlight – often a bit washed out compared to more southern climes - so providing a stronger light for the type of plants that appreciate it.

You may not be able to create your own vintage but the vines will look particularly authentic when draped with a few bunches of grapes.

Mediterranean gardens often make full use of the walls and any other vertical surfaces, so put up hanging baskets, pots and wall baskets and cram them full of plants.

Glazed tiles, wall-hangings and even the odd ornament or two can also add to the Mediterranean look, but make sure you choose items that won’t be instantly bleached by the sun.

Plants in pots are a must and if possible choose stone or terracotta containers. If you

Growing your citrus tree in a good-sized terracotta pot means that you can move it into a more protected spot if necessary. Olives are best grown in a large container unless you have a warm garden and a very well-drained soil as they hate winter wet. Some plants just spell out Mediterranean Magic – try geraniums and pelargoniums, aeoniums and sempervivums, rosemary, thyme, oregano and pretty well anything with silvery foliage. Go for the brightest coloured flowers and your new holiday destination will also benefit from a subtle Mediterranean aroma too. When you have run out of space and it’s not possible to extend, the time has come to think creatively. With the right approach, you may even be able to make two rooms out of one. Had a new baby? Children growing up? Started working from home? Every year it seems like there’s more pressure on our living space. And while it’s not always possible to move up the property ladder to a ten-bedroom mansion, there is always a way to make your current property work better for you. It’s called doubling-up – and it’s all about giving your home a new lease of life with some thoughtful rearrangements and careful additions, resulting in multifunctional rooms that are entirely practical and yet also utterly stylish. Take a long, hard look at every room in your home and, even in the smallest of apartments, it will soon be possible to see which spaces can be modified so as to serve more than one purpose. We’re not talking about expensive extensions or complex loft conversions, but simply about making the most of what you’ve already got. Like adding a dining area to a kitchen, a home office in a bedroom or a hideaway guest bed in a living room. Life Begins My VCR Moment by Kate McLelland

I remember the 1980s as a time of tremendous change, when the growth of technology resulted in revolutionary gadgets such as the Polaroid camera, the Boombox, the Sony Walkman and the video cassette recorder. As a teenager I constantly nagged, begged and pleaded with my parents to buy a VCR. I was tired of hearing our neighbours boast about watching repeats of Dallas and longed to be able to record all the “juvenile and mindless” comedy programmes my parents refused to watch, so I could play them on an endless loop as soon as I got home from school. My father loved his television, so I naturally assumed he would be eager to own a VCR, but he remained strangely reluctant to buy one. The day he finally gave in and came home with a brand new recorder, my brother and I nearly exploded with excitement. However, as soon as he unpacked the box and began to read the instructions, we realised something was wrong.

After a long struggle with the cables he gave up and decamped to the kitchen for a cup of tea, leaving my brother and I twitching with impatience. Before he’d drained his cup and returned to the lounge, we had set up the VCR and made a test recording. That was the first time I had ever questioned my parents’ ability to do anything, and I recall feeling slightly smug about our success with the VCR. In future years as televisions, radios and other items of household equipment became more complex and technically challenging, we were simply given the manual and left to get on with it. It’s not unusual for patterns to repeat themselves over successive generations, and I’m a little ashamed to admit that instead of continuing to embrace the new, I simply sat back and let my own children take on the role of “expert”. I therefore managed to sidestep the IT revolution completely.

It was then that I found myself in exactly the same position as my poor father, confounded by the VCR all those years ago. It hurt my pride to realise that I am no longer able to keep up with new technology, and my experience made me think of all those other people of my age who haven’t yet picked up the basic principles of operating a computer. These people now have a precious window of opportunity to gain IT skills before their ability to learn is compromised by old age. I might have been embarrassed to admit I couldn’t use my grandson’s tablet computer, but I’m eternally grateful to him for making me aware of the yawning gap in my knowledge … a gap I’ve allowed to become wider and wider over the years. I may have let things slip, but I don’t intend to waste any more time: this week I’ve signed up for a computer course at my local library.

The New York Motor Show might not be the biggest event on the automotive calendar, but there were some still some treats in store for car fans in the Big Apple. Land Rover Discovery Concept

It was launched on an aircraft carrier, next to a spaceship, with the Manhattan skyline as a backdrop – anyone would think the new Discovery was a big deal for Land Rover. Of course, we jest, it’s a massive deal. This debut is not just a new model, but a new “family” for the manufacturer.

The S63 will go on sale in November and cost a finance director-bothering £100,000.

We’re not sure which term the Germans prefer – and frankly don’t care – all we know is the BMW M4 looks absolutely stunning with its roof chopped off. The M4 features a clever three-piece folding metal roof and some not-so-subtle design tweaks to mark it out from lesser drop-tops in the range. These include quad tailpipes, larger front bumper and a tweaked kidney grille. The convertible will go on sale in September costing £60,730 and boasts a 3.0litre turbocharged six cylinder with 425bhp. it needed it. The MPV has seating for eight as well as some clever internal trickery that can fold seats away and remove them.

BMW X4 There were a number of models that didn’t make our top cars of the show cut, and this X4 very nearly was one of them. Let’s face it, the crossover fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down – but thankfully there are many people out there that love an ugly duckling, and BMW will be hoping they’re willing to buy one of these. The maker has form here.

Apparently 240,000 people bought the equally visuallychallenged X6, so there’s certainly a market for it. Borrowing engines from the X3, the X4 will go on sale priced from £35,590 – that’s a lot of money for a car only a mother could love. So why’s it included here? Well, we like manufacturers being brave – and revealing this with a straight face was certainly that...

Inle Lake Myanmar By Solange Hando

Deep in central Myanmar (formerly Burma), Inle, ‘the blue sea in the Shan hills’, is a truly magical place glistening at nearly 3000 feet in the first foothills of the Himalaya. Stretching for 11 miles and crisscrossed by myriad channels, it’s unlike anywhere else in the country, a cool escape for visitors who relax in luxurious floating hotels and a lifeline for the locals who toil in villages perched on stilts above the water.

For it isn’t just the fishermen who make good use of the lake. The hard working Inthar produce much of their food in ingenious floating gardens which they build with silt and weeds. Anchored deep down, long bamboo poles keep the allotments in place but they can be moved around, extended, strengthened with an extra layer, and best of all, there’s no need to worry about watering crops. All sorts of vegetables and fruit are grown on the lake but the small Inle tomatoes are said to be the sweetest anywhere and come spring or summer, great swathes of flowers bloom on the water.

Rice and sugar cane glow all shades of green on the banks but for the Inthar people, the lake is the soul of the community. Devotees have covered the Buddha images with so much gold leaf you can no longer see their shape but once a year at festival time, they are gloriously paraded all around the lake on a magnificent golden barge resembling a holy bird. There are devotions and prayers, legrowing races and traditional dancing and for a few days, Inle comes into its own as one of the most colourful places in the land.

Frodsham Festival in the Park. Sunday 6th July 2014

Free Admission, however donations will be welcome. “Officially Opened” at 12.30pm by Frodsham’s Town Mayor, Councillor Allen Wales The Festival will incorporate the Finish of “Frodsham Downhill Run” Art and Craft displays in Castle Park Art’s Centre & the Galleries and Shops will be open. Rides and attractions in the children’s “Fun Fair” area and shows & features designed for the slightly older children of the family. Main stage performances, stalls and displays. The 2014 Frodsham Downhill Run is taking place on Sunday 6th July covering a route of 1.3 miles leaving the memorial on Frodsham Hill at 12.30pm to arrive at the Festival in the Park, Castle Park, Frodsham.

The Wirral and Cheshire Badger Group The W&CBG have raised over £15,000 for the vaccination programme including generous funding from Chester Zoo. Farm surveys are now underway and two of the Group will be attending a five day course in July to be trained as vaccinators. More than forty members of the group have volunteered to help with the five-year vaccination programme including surveying land for badger activity, setting traps, pre-baiting, supporting the vaccinators and storing and cleaning traps and equipment. MISSION STATEMENT The Wirral and Cheshire Badger Group is committed to delivering a five-year vaccination programme for badgers across Cheshire. Working closely with farmers and landowners we will provide a service run by fully trained volunteers. Our vaccination programme will offer a long-term, affordable and humane alternative to culling. With over thirty years of experience in badger ecology the Wirral and Cheshire Badger Group is committed to vaccination as the only current sustainable method of protecting badgers and supporting the reduction of bovine TB in cattle. www.wcbg.co.uk

Neuromuscular Centre’s Open Air Cinema An Open Air Cinema Event, brought to you by the Neuromuscular Centre (NMC) in Winsford and supported by the town council, is set to be a magical afternoon of fun and entertainment for all ages on Wednesday 6th August showing the Disney hit Frozen. Join us in the NMC meadow, where there will be an outdoor cinema screen for you to sit back and enjoy the recent release from Disney that has everyone singing along. Frozen is a film that is much loved by children and adults alike and is ideal viewing for a summer afternoon.
