Short Story An Adjustment to the Wardrobe Morris stared at the contents of his wardrobe, and knew he had a problem. Not only was the man from the park six inches taller than him, he was also considerably broader. Dorothy always said he made dreadful decisions under pressure, but this time he had to get it right. Time was ticking, and before long the Sunday morning joggers would begin to arrive at the park. With every passing second the risk of detection, not to mention hypothermia, became ever greater. It was lucky for the young man that Morris had been the first to find him. Morris was walking the dog at his usual time, and as he’d passed the shelter by the lime trees a strange voice had hailed him hoarsely from the shadows within. Morris’s heart had nearly leapt from his chest. It was a classic fight or flight situation. Considering neither he, nor his basset, Broadstairs, were getting any younger, flight wasn’t really an option. To his utter relief the voice did not belong to a mugger but to a young man, who was stark naked, save for a battered Indian headdress. “I don’t suppose you could lend me a couple of quid to catch the bus home?” the man had asked politely, yet desperately. “And possibly some clothes?”

It was too risky to have him brazenly walking through the park, and besides, Morris didn’t want a naked man in the house disturbing Dorothy. He looked over at Dorothy snoring contentedly under the eiderdown. The less she knew about this sorry business the better. If he could just find some suitable clothes then it would be a secret he and Broadstairs could take to the grave. Even in this dim light Morris could see that nothing he owned would fit. His jackets, his shoes, and even his trousers would be far too small. The man would get some funny looks on the bus squeezed into those.

Delighted by his excellent decision making, he stuffed the clothes in a carrier bag and left the house without once disturbing Dorothy. He and poor Broadstairs, would, however, be enduring a deeply disturbed Dorothy two days later. There’s no easy way to explain to your wife why you’ve received a parcel containing her peach satin mother-of-the-bride outfit, her matching sling-backs, two pound coins and a battered Indian headdress in the post.

Cake and Bake Fruit & Nut Granola Bars If you’re worried about additives or extra sweeteners in shop-bought granola bars then why not try making your own? Packed with crunchy nuts and seeds and sweetened only with brown sugar and honey, these homemade oaty bars are perfect for a snack or as an after-school treat.

Ingredients: • 140g porridge oats • 50g unsalted blanched peanuts • 25g pecans, roughly chopped • 25g pumpkin seeds • 20g sunflower seeds • 100g butter, plus extra for greasing • 80g light soft brown sugar • 3 tbsp runny honey • 75g sweetened dried cranberries or jumbo raisins • 2 tbsp sesame seeds

Makes 8 bars or 16 squares

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/Fan 140°C/Gas 3. Grease an 18cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. 2. Spread the oats, nuts and seeds on a large baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just lightly toasted, stirring once with a wooden spatula. 3. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Tip the warm oat mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly, then stir in the cranberries or raisins and nearly all the sesame seeds. 4. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level with the back of a spoon, pressing down firmly. Scatter over the rest of the sesame seeds. 5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until just pale golden around the edges. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then use the tip of a knife to mark into 8 bars. Leave in the tin until cold then lift out, using the lining paper to help you. Peel away the paper and cut through the marks to make 8 bars.

You can vary the nuts and fruit you add to these wholesome bars. Hobbies Has the Great Pottery Throwdown fired you up? By Kate McLelland

The BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown finished in December after its first series of six programmes. Made by the team that produced The Great British Bake Off, it aimed to find Britain’s hottest pottery stars and, like Bake Off, it has helped the British public to understand more about the creation of artisan products, whether that’s a sourdough loaf or a set of stackable breakfast bowls. Learning about the intricacies of pottery making has been a revelation to viewers who had previously not given much thought to the process, and since the series ended many have been eager to try it for themselves. So if you’re thinking of joining a pottery class, what are the basic things that you should know before you start?

It’s not all about the wheel

There are two very different ways of making objects out of clay. Hand building, as the term suggests, doesn’t require a potter’s wheel: you will either make long, thin rolls of clay and build them up into a single shape (known as a pinch pot) or roll the clay out into slabs and join the pieces together with liquid clay to create a square or rectangular shape (slab pot).

Inevitably the first few times you try, the clay will either slide off the wheel or you’ll make a perfect, cylindrical shape only to see it twist and warp at the very last minute.

It’s slow

If you’re one of those people who likes to see instant results, pottery making may not be right for you, as the production of finished objects takes time. When a piece is first made the clay is loaded with water and must be thoroughly and evenly dried out before it can be fired. That’s a minimum of a week for freshly made (or ‘green’) objects.

It’s a scIence as well as a craft

Making the initial clay shape is just part of a process that ends with a hard material that in some cases is almost as durable as stone. A pottery oven (kiln) is not the same as a domestic oven and an apprentice potter will need to learn how clay and glazes react when heated to high temperatures.

Bisque firing is the first stage, where unglazed pots are heated just enough for them to be able to take the glaze that will give them their final, glossy finish. Once glazes have been applied the pots go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. At this stage pots must be kept completely apart or the glazes will melt on to each other and bond the pots together.

It needs space and Investment

You may be happy to continue working with others as you learn your craft at a local pottery class, but eventually you might decide to go it alone. If so, you will

need to find additional space for your hobby. A large shed or a garage with electrics connected would be ideal, provided there is adequate room for the wheel and the kiln, a surface to paint and glaze your pots and places for them to dry before firing. However the equipment you’ll need can be costly: expect to spend between £600 and £2,000 on a potter’s wheel and £1,000-£4,000 on a kiln, and that’s without all the accessories and materials you’ll need to make the pots themselves. Taking up pottery making can be hugely satisfying and rewarding but it’s not a hobby you can simply pick up and put down again. It may take several weeks for you to make your first pottery

objects and it could take considerably longer before you are proficient enough to create objects you might offer for sale. Once again, the BBC has opened our eyes to a craft that has been largely overlooked in recent years. The Great Pottery Throwdown may not eventually prove as successful as The Great British Bake-Off, but at least it has helped us to understand the skill, passion and commitment required to make a simple pottery object that can be used and enjoyed for years.

Botswana The Chobe National Park By Solange Hando At the heart of southern Africa, Botswana opened its first National Park in 1967 along the Chobe River, which borders Namibia to the north. With 11,700 km2, it is only second in size to the Kalahari and boasts a rich biodiversity, especially on the riverfront where wildlife migrates from far and wide at the start of the dry season. Here the blue waters of the Chobe split into myriad channels and lagoons, creating lush wetlands on their way to the Zambezi. The elephants know it well and as soon as saltpans begin to dry, up to 160,000 of them take up residence in the park, the highest concentration anywhere in the world. Solitary elders or family herds, theyâ€™re well camouflaged in the forest but easy to spot along the river, plodding unhurried on soft silky sand, entwining their trunks, splashing about and in the late afternoon wading or swimming across to Sedudu island for a quiet night under the stars.

Success for Helsby and Frodsham pupils in MP’s Christmas card competition Hundreds of school children across the Weaver Vale constituency took part in Graham Evans’ annual Christmas card competition, with Helsby and Frodsham pupils doing extremely well. “My annual Christmas card competition is one of the highlights of my year,” said Graham, “I love what our terrifically talented youngsters come up with each year. 2015 has seen more entries than ever which made it even harder to choose winners!” The winning entries are published in Graham’s Christmas card which is delivered by volunteers to thousands of homes across Weaver Vale. This year’s winner, whose picture appears on the front of the card, is 10 year old Emily Anderson from Frodsham CofE Primary. Ten year old James Rogers who goes to Helsby Horn’s Mill was one of the runners up, with his wonderful picture of Father Christmas at the Horn’s Mill. The winner of the best High School category was Sophie Beckinham from Leftwich County High School, whilst runners up included Cameron Parton, 14, from the Russett School in Weaverham, 10 year old Lily Davey from Witton Church Walk School and Abi Cockram, 10 yrs, from Windmill Hill Primary. The winner of the Best pre-school entry was 3 year old Thomas Fairfield from Frodsham Weaver Vale Primary School. “The standard of the entries was incredibly high,” commented Graham, “and very, very Christmassy! We had Father Christmas by the Kingsmead clock, Reindeers flying over Northwich, Alice in Wonderland characters in Daresbury bedecked in Christmas hats and lots of lovely snow filled scenes from around the constituency. I’d like to thank all those who took part and all the teachers who sent in the works of art. They were all fabulous, it was a very tough decision to make and shows just how artistic our local school children are!”

In 2015 KTI developed its marketing profile, held 4 excellent local produce markets, rendered IT support to elderly residents, held an excellent e-commerce evening and gave support to the 2 local primary schools and much else …. FTI supported ‘Frodsham Sings’, a community choir, now more than 40 voices led by the outstanding Musical Director Ian Oulton. We supported the Weaver and Sandstone cycle forum, our Children’s garden, Community Orchard planting, supply of local produce veg boxes via the Natural Veg men and services to the elderly via OPAL and HomeInstead and more besides… In 2016 both initiatives will develop their existing projects, ensure the community voice is heard regarding energy issues, engage more with youth, have Frodsham recognised as a ‘Volunteer Community’, meet with other Transition and Permaculture groups and promote transition principles within the community. Essar 4 Villages Half Marathon Sunday January 17th 2016 10:30am “Our Helsby Half” starts from Helsby Communtiy Sport Centre then winds its’ way through lovely Cheshire country side and the villages of Dunham on the Hill, Manley, Mouldsworth and Alvanley before returning to finish at Horns Mill School in Helsby. Again this year the Essar Four Villages commemorative running top has been decided by a design competition with local schools for the artwork design. Last year we donated over £25,000 to our two chosen local hospices and local voluntary groups. We are grateful for the goodwill of everyone living and working nearby, whose help results in a successful race which the local community can be proud of.
