Dear Friends, I’ve been asked a lot this month how I’ve been getting on at Boot Camp and the answer is great! I’m feeling much fitter and hopefully a bit more toned! I’m now part way through my second month and although it’s hard work, it’s actually good fun! The next ‘camp’ starts on June 24th and is just for 2 weeks so if you’ve ever fancied trying it but don’t want to commit to 4 weeks, now’s your chance. I’ve got three great editorials for you this month, which I’ve really enjoyed putting together. Huge congratulations to Lorraine, the oven cleaner who celebrates 10 years in business - I was overwhelmed by all of the fantastic testimonials that were sent to me singing Lorraine’s praises.

Ruby

Lil‛ Cuties 2013 The wonderful pictures that adorn these pages are the work of local, talented photographer Charlene Cuthbertson, who, with the help of her partner Nathan run the successful Dream World photographic studio in Helsby. Offering shoots either in their spacious studio or out on location for newborns, children, family groups, couples and pets. High quality bespoke prints can be presented in frames, wall art, gorgeous memory books (which I just love) and more - key rings etc. to enable you to show off your images exactly how you want to. The Lil‛ Cutie competition finally came to a climax last month as I and 3 other judges had the extremely difficult task of picking the winners in the 3 age groups. Believe me there was quite a debate going on at times! I was joined at the studio by Hannah from Serenity, Rebecca from The Devonshire Bakery (who provide the yummy cakes for ‘Smash the cake’ as Zach demonstrates to the left!) and Peter Smith from The Joshua Tree charity, which benefitted from the proceeds of the competition. There were 151 fantastic entries, so competition was tough but we finally whittled it down to the top 3 places in each of the categories with Ruby winning the 1-12 months, Ashton 1-3 years and Alice was first in the 3-6 year group. The winners shared prizes with a total value of nearly £4,000! So a big congratulations to them and in the process £377.50 was raised towards the realisation of The Joshua Tree in Sandiway.

0-12 months It was lovely that Nathan and Charlene chose a local charity to support, I was interested to find out more from Peter.... “The seed for The Joshua Tree project was sown in 2005 when our son Joshua was diagnosed with leukaemia - the day to day routine of caring for a child with Ashton cancer meant we had to face struggles as a family, there were many things Josh wasn’t allowed to do because his immune system was so weak, and 1-3 years it was hard to find a place where we could all spend much needed time together. Today he is in remission and a happy kid just loving life, but we wanted to reach out to families going through difficult times, just like us”. www.thejoshuatree.org.uk

Plant of the month - Clematis Clematis are one of the most popular garden plants because of their versatility in terms of where they can be planted - on walls, frames, containers, over pergolas or just left to scramble their way through existing shrubs and trees. Watering them regularly during the growing season, and applying a general purpose fertiliser each month during spring and summer will keep them healthy. If you intend to plant them in a container make sure that it is at least 45cm deep and wide and that your compost is suitable for container based planting. Replace the top few cms each spring with fresh potting compost. For those that are climbers, provide a form of support and those that are more shrubby in nature, give them ties to their supports.

A Stitch In Time Donna Smith grew up in Guilden Sutton and trained as a fashion designer and pattern cutter before opening her first alterations and dressmaking shop in Chester at the tender age of 17. Three years later Donna decided to travel and spent the next 16 years working in the fashion industry overseas. She launched her own range of ladies special occasion wear in 1984 when Donna Michelle Designs was born. Nearly 20 years later, Donna’s passion for fashion has come full circle when she opened an alterations and dressmaking shop in Chester again. The shop opened in January 2013, and within a few weeks Donna was looking for another premises to cope with the workload! And so in April this year the doors of the Helsby branch of A Stitch In Time opened. The shop is the fulfilment of an ambition for Donna to have studio space for fittings as well as a cutting room and sewing room for a small team of professional seamstresses.

In Donna’s words - “We can tackle the most challenging alterations and refits as well as designing a bespoke outfit for that special occasion. If it needs hemming, fixing, taking in, letting out then we can do it. We also specialise in bespoke occasion wear - from Prom dresses to Mother of the Bride (or Groom!) outfits and Bridesmaids frocks to Christening gowns”. Donna’s team of seamstresses don’t just stop at clothing alterations and bespoke outfits, their talents stretch to soft furnishings and curtains as well. I enjoyed being invited along to the launch party where guests were treated to champagne and delicious canapés as the stunning Millie modelled a range of evening wear. The premises in Helsby really lends itself to Donna’s business, affording the space to display a beautiful range of prom / evening dresses, along with gorgeous handbags, clutch bags, evening bags and purses by LYDC of London, DSUK and Anna Smith; which incidently are very reasonably priced (£9.99 for purses, evening bags from £14.99 and handbags from £29.99) - perfect for a gift or to treat yourself!

To advertise call: 01928 727 165 or email: helsbytohand@btinternet.com

The Helsby premises has a spacious area at the back which acts as a dedicated sewing room; although Donna can often be caught with her sewing machine on the main desk in the shop area, as she was when I called in last week!

A Stitch In Time

213 Chester Road, Helsby, Cheshire, WA6 0DA 01928 723 795 Open Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm

There is always a seamstress available to fit and pin so you don’t have to make an appointment, just call in! Generally, alterations take a week but A Stitch in Time can usually accommodate occasional emergencies! However, for bespoke outfits a time scale of 6-8 weeks is advisable. Communion dresses, bridesmaids dresses, and Christening dresses are a speciality. Simply take in a sketch, pattern or photograph to copy and A Stitch in Time will bring your dream to life. Wedding dresses can also be altered to fit the Bride perfectly. General alterations are equally catered for from turning up trousers, altering the length of shirt sleeves, shortening a hem on a dress, taking in or letting out a jacket to altering a favourite outfit. The spacious changing room is a welcome addition. All alterations are pressed prior to the

customer collection and depending on the garment they are hung in a plastic sleeve or bagged. Softfurnishings-loosecovers,tablerunners etc. and curtains are made on the premises with the option of all the usual headers - eyelets, pleats etc. and advice on dimensions, length of curtain material to purchase is given. Donna is toying with the idea of sewing classes during the winter months, if you would be interested in this, please let Donna know.

6 tips for getting the most out of Facebook

By Alison Reeves

Become your own apprentice – get the building bricks of your business right from Alison Reeves - one of the UKs leading business writing coaches. People seem to think that it is OK to post across their social media accounts - for example posting the same updates on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. However this goes against the whole point of social media which is to engage ‘socially’. This means that those who develop a separate strategy for each social media platform are more likely to attract interest. If someone consistently sees the same messages on all your social media platforms they will be inclined to switch off and not read anything you say, or worse disengage completely. Here are some tips for running your Facebook social media: 1. Create a Facebook page rather than using a personal profile. Whilst you are doing this, make sure you give the page a suitable name. The name of your business is a good choice. Once you have the right number of likes on the page (at the time of writing, this is 25) then you can select a ‘vanity’ URL for example www.facebook.com/yourcompanyname. This allows you to promote your page on your business cards, website, email signatures and so on. 2. Make sure you fill in the ‘About’ information - this obviously looks more professional and is also good for SEO - so make sure you include some of your key words. Include your website URL and links to any of your significant products. 3. Create a professional looking Facebook cover photo. The rules surrounding this do change, so check it out on Facebook. When you upload your cover photo, you are asked to provide a description so write a short bio of your business and add in a call to action and suitable links. Sometimes visitors click on a cover photo to see it more clearly and this is one more way to capture their interest. It is worth getting your graphic designer to sort out your photos when they sort out your logo as it looks much more professional. 4. If you have a blog, then blog about your Facebook page and why readers should like it. You can offer

exclusive offers, news, previews of new products, dates of events and so on. Whilst on the subject, promote your Facebook page on all of your other social media channels. 5. When it comes to updates on your Facebook page, the magic bullet is consistency. You don’t want to spam your customers with dozens of updates every day. Equally you don’t want it to look abandoned. The general consensus is to post no more than two updates a day, or a minimum of two a week. Don’t forget that if people don’t engage in your posts, Facebook will filter your content and not show it in their feeds. Quality updates designed to promote engagement works best - for example, asking questions, posting videos and pictures. 6. Don’t forget you can schedule your Facebook posts. This is a very useful feature if you have a busy period, or indeed if you are likely to be away on holiday. If you are unable to interact with your page (for example if you have gone abroad) then you could post tips type of content. Avoid posting scheduled posts inviting a high level of interaction if you can’t get online and interact yourself. Next time we will look at Twitter.

Celebrating

Doing the chore you love to hate!

years in business

The Ovencleaners celebrate 10 successful years in business... Lorraine started her oven cleaning business on the 18th June, 2003 after moving ‘up North’ following redundancy and through hard work and attention to detail she now has an enviable client database of 670 regular customers! Starting a business as a single mum with two sons to support was a tough ask but Lorraine rose to the challenge, leafleting and promoting her business, picking up work along the way. Although the first 6 months were a hard slog, Lorraine says that it was definitely worth the effort and plans to be the oldest oven cleaner in town! She’s very passionate about her business and I personally can vouch that she does an amazing job and I look forward to her annual visit, bringing my oven back to showroom condition every Christmas! Lorraine is very grateful for the continuous support from her customers, despite the economic climate of late. With such hectic busy lives Lorraine is a god send! Whether it’s a regular visit every 3, 6, 12 months or a one off clean, it’s service with a smile every time. Often one off visits are prior to selling or leasing a property and Lorraine also covers many student lets, which often have a quick turn around so she enlists the help of other oven

cleaners to help her battle from dawn to dusk to complete the many properties within the time schedule. Lorraine gets total joy from meeting people and takes great pride in the end result of her labours. Although it is very physical work, Lorraine is super strong from all her years experience and takes it in her stride. Reliability is definitively a strength, she is never off sick and if she is ever delayed from a previous job Lorraine always phones the next client to let them know. Ovens, hobs, extractors, BBQ’s, Aga’s, ranges and microwaves - Lorraine cleans them all! With great equipment and a full range of fantastic products that can shift the most stubborn stains and carbon deposits.

A typical clean entails stripping down the oven, unscrewing anything that can be removed and these are taken outside, along with the racks etc. to her van to be cleaned so there is minimum mess in the house. The van has a tailgate, which acts as a roof and with the addition of a wind break Lorraine is able to work in all weathers. A boiler and gas bottle is used to heat a 14 litre pot, which contains a mixture of fairy liquid and dishwasher powder. Please note that Lorraine is very safety conscious, the burner rests on wood so there is no damage to drives and a safety barrier is put in place. The rest of the oven, hob etc. are cleaned in situ, including the back of the oven and inside the fan, with a variety of tools to get into all the nooks and crannies! Lorraine can fix minor problems but any electrical problems are passed on to KDE Ltd and she also has telephone numbers for appliance engineers if required. Lorraine can Don’t just take my word for it, other satisfied customers sing Lorraine’s praises... “Lorraine has been coming to clean my aga 2 or 3 times a year for quite a few years. Her work is really great. She is friendly, trustworthy and does a superb job with attention to detail. I have recommended her to others who have been equally pleased”. Sheila - Frodsham

advise and spot problems such as a seal that needs replacing, an element that is about to go or if the temperature isn’t correct, it’s a bit like an MOT for ovens! Extractors should be used all the time, to take away steam which carries cooking smells and grease with it, making the running of the appliances more efficient. Lorraine appreciates that we all have busy lives so can accommodate evening and weekend appointments if necessary. “Lorraine provides a very efficient, competitive & professional well managed service, I have used her for 7 years and my oven is always bought back to showroom finish. Really pleased & no mess, highly recommended!” Jane - Helsby. “We have 4 children and many of their friends join us for meals, so my oven is always in use. Having up to 10 people for Sunday roast is not unusual in our house! Lorraine always brings my oven back to looking like new”. Jan - Frodsham

“Lorraine always provides a very efficient and gleaming end result to her finishes. Carefully protecting other surfaces (floors, worktops, etc.) as she goes along. She spends the best part of a couple of hours meticulously cleaning every component part of New Customer the oven, removing interior trays and racks, unscrewing fixing plates Prices start from £50.00 and housings to make sure every surface looks just like new. I have for a single oven, £60.00 nothing but total admiration for the way Lorraine carries out her task”. for a double, hobs & Dave from Helsby “If this is Lorraine’s 10th anniversary, it means I haven’t cleaned my oven myself for 10 years! Lorraine does a great job, leaving my double oven, spotlessly clean. She is friendly and trustworthy and as it used to take me 8 hours to clean my oven, Lorraine has saved me lots of time so I consider it to be money well spent”. Kerley - Helsby

extractors from £10.00 Range cookers start at £95.00 & Agas from £80.00.

Tastes so good...

STRAWBERRY SHERBET

Succulent, fragrant and local. The local strawberry industry from the 1860’s gave rise to jam production and the ‘strawberry specials’ - trains delivering our lovely local produce to London and around the UK. To celebrate our Strawberry Coast here’s a wonderful modern twist on an old fashioned sherbet. As well as being delicious, there are health benefits in these little gems including impressive amounts of Vitamin C and high levels of anti oxidants. Equipment: Food processor or jug blender. Ingredients for 4 servings 300g fresh local strawberries A few turns of cracked black pepper 2 or 3 squares of dark grated chocolate, chili flavor optional to decorate. 30ml fresh lemon juice 30g caster sugar 250ml cold refrigerated whole milk Fresh mint for garnish (optional)

Method: Wash and remove any green leaves or stalks from the strawberries. Pop four aside and freeze the rest for 40 minutes to 1 hour until softly frozen. Dice 3 and slice 1 of the 4 strawberries. These are to be added to the finished sherbet. The slices will be used for the topping. Grate the chocolate. Place frozen strawberries in a food processor with sugar and lemon juice. Pulse to chop them initially then run processor until almost a puree. Pour the milk through the feed tube into the mix whilst still processing until the ingredients are ONLY JUST blended. Stir in diced fresh strawberries and a few turns of cracked black pepper before spooning into dessert dishes. Garnish with sprigs of fresh mint, slices of strawberry and grated chocolate. Enjoy immediately!

Expand your horizons

Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space. Jobs for June:Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.

Every year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings!

heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost! There are some special offers on www.nwleics.gov.uk, under recycling, for composters.

Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater.

June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year. Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops - many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! Look for suitable strawberries or tomatoes and you could be treated to a bumper crop of luscious fruit tumbling down from above.

So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the

BIOGRAPHIES

Volvo V40

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk @carwriteups

GONE ARE the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes. Volvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable - and the V40 is the latest one. Like all Volvos it is well built but this has a definite athletic appearance about it. From the twin tailpipes to the low profile tyres on 18 inch rims the V40 D4 SE obviously means business. But does it deliver? Absolutely. The 1984cc five cylinder, 20 valve oil-burner churns out 175bhp, so 0-62 comes in a rapid 8.6 seconds. The wide car sits low on the road and takes corners on rails. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and, as with all Swedish-made cars, the seats are ultra supportive on long commutes. The V40 isn’t just about performance and grip though; it also provides enough space for four-up. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids.

which also now qualifies for reduced insurance premiums. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,795.00 V40 D4, on test here, is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 65.7mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don't want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety features". Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest – but you get what you pay for - usually.

Muddles Supports Claire House Children's Hospice Muddles is a friendly, busy Baby & Toddler Group run by Helsby Methodist Church for 0-4 year olds. The group has been running very successfully for over fifteen years, meeting on a Monday and Thursday morning in term-time. Parents, carers, child minders and grandparents bring their children along to play and have fun whilst they enjoy a coffee and a chat and catch up with friends. Muddles is a very welcoming group and is supported by volunteers from the church who make the teas and coffees for the adults and juice and snacks for the children. After the Thursday Muddles session there is a short half-hour toddler service called 'Church Mice'. The children love meeting Matthew Mouse the puppet and have great fun finding the little knitted mice which are hidden round the church and putting them back safely in their mouse house! Church Mice includes a Bible story, song and craft and always a chocolate mouse to take home! Muddles have chosen to support Claire House with fund-raising events and donations.
