Dear Friends, Welcome to the February edition. Over the last couple of weeks my family and I have been sampling all of the delicious potato products that are produced by Cheshire Farm. You can read all about this successful family business on the centre pages and discover that the Jackson family are going back to their roots by opening a small farm shop dedicated to their own products at Teuthill Farm in Frodsham. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner you’ll ﬁnd some lovely gift ideas in this edition and to really wow your loved one why don’t you have a go at making Palmiers? The recipe is on page 73. These delicious sweet pastries are easy to make using just a sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry and caster sugar. Serve with coffee, or sandwich together in pairs with jam and whipped double cream for an indulgent dessert!

Short Story The Extreme Ironing Club By Jackie Brewster “Knock, knock! Saw you weren’t in your cubicle earlier.” Amanda’s unwelcome head appeared above the partition between hers and Kay’s desks. “Has someone been out for a sneaky Valentine’s lunch with ‘Mister You Know Who’?” Having an imaginary boyfriend was fraught with complications, but it was better than the alternative. Ever since Amanda had married the marvellous Bertie, she had transformed into the type of person who cannot rest until everyone is happily married off. Kay had been bullied into a succession of blind dates with Bertie’s socially awkward friends from the Extreme Ironing Club. There are only so many prawn cocktails anyone can eat while hearing about the thrills of the great outdoors coupled with the satisfaction of a well pressed shirt. Kay had not been for a romantic lunch. She’d been at the parcel office collecting a package. She decided to lie anyway. “He’s working in Brussels again,” she said breezily. It was a useful lie, but one she knew she shouldn’t rely on. There was a danger that the slightest suggestion her imaginary beau wasn’t fully committed would have Amanda arranging prawn cocktails with the ironing bores again. “So has the lovely Bertie been showering you with gifts?” Kay asked, in a hurry to change the subject.

He really shouldn’t have, it must have cost the earth.” Amanda held out her arm. “He had it custom made in the jewellery quarter.” Kay dropped the bracelet quickly back into her pocket, and leaned forward in order to better admire an identical charm bracelet around Amanda’s wrist. “Do you think I should get it valued for insurance purposes?” Amanda asked. “Surely it’s the thought that counts?” Kay suggested kindly. For once she felt sorry for Amanda. It seemed she was not the only one who felt under pressure to embellish the truth. “I suppose you’re right.” Amanda admired her awful bracelet, and then noticed the large package beneath Kay’s desk. “Is that it?”

Watching wild birds in your garden is a real delight, and the fact that many of them also help to keep pests at bay for much of the year means that it makes sense to do everything you can to encourage them in. Gardens which are very regimented and sparse are much less likely to prove a haven for wild birds, but if you have a fair number of potential hiding places such as a few good sized shrubs or trees, then so much the better. Obviously trees which provide berries or other fruits are always going to be welcome and, although it means that the display of autumnal berries you looked forward to is slightly foreshortened, you can be sure that the birds eating them will have put them to good use!

Planning For The Time When Independence Ends by Kate McLelland It’s one of those life-changing moments. You’ve just received a phone call telling you that an elderly relative has been admitted to hospital with a fall injury or an illness from which they are unlikely to fully recover. There are two options available to families facing this crucial moment. Either arrange for your relative to be admitted to a residential care home or make space in your own house so they can live with you. But is your home actually suitable to shelter and care for a vulnerable older person with medical problems and/or limited mobility? Adapting your house needs careful preparation so your relative can move around safely and easily. Will the stairs be a problem? The first thing you’ll need to consider is whether or not your loved one will be able to use the stairs. Last year, Age UK commissioned research into the cost of installing a stair lift and found that the price varied between £4,940 and £5,469 for a straight staircase, with approximately £500 added for a curved stair lift.

Lucy Lucy is the 5th generation of the Jackson family at Teuthill Farm, Tarvin Road, Frodsham. Her Great, Great Grandfather, Harry was the first of the Jackson’s to farm here, followed by Tommy, Geoff and Paul. Geoff’s wife, Gill started the farm shop in 1997 and when their son Paul and his wife Wendy took over, the shop expanded and new lines were introduced, although Gill’s homemade cakes still remained popular! Many of you will have been regular customers of the lovely farm shop at Teuthill until it closed it’s doors several years ago to concentrate on the next business venture - Cheshire Farm Chips and I’m pleased to report that the business has gone from strength to strength. Having provided prepared fruit, vegetables and chips to local pubs and hotels whilst running the farm shop it was becoming evident that Wendy’s special chips were proving to be more and more popular and so the decision was taken to concentrate on this and other potato products, especially as for years the family have grown their own potatoes. Lucy had always offered a helping hand in the family business whilst growing up, prior to and during her time at university where she studied Business and IT. Having acquired her degree, she decided that she would like to bring her expertise to the family business and grow the retail portfolio.

Fast forward 5 and half years and the hard work and determination has paid off. Cheshire Farm products are now available from Scotland down to the South! Cheshire Farm now employs 10 people, including Paul, Wendy, Lucy and they also have a student placement from Harper Adams University for 12 months and Tim who is assisting Lucy with marketing. Supplying all 32 of the Booths Supermarkets in Cheshire and Lancashire, 11 local Waitrose stores, as well as many independent shops and even butchers which I was surprised to hear, until Lucy explained that they make a great steak and chips meal deal! You can also buy them direct from Teuthill Farm or via the website. The family are going back to their roots by opening a small shop within the large production unit, selling Cheshire Farm products. Access is from the large parking area to the rear of the farmhouse. All of the top quality potatoes used are home grown and it’s not unusual for them to be prepared within hours of being dug up from the field. Different varieties are grown specifically for the various products available. The whole process takes place on site, the potatoes are washed, peeled, cut, parr cooked, cooled and the appropriate seasoning added prior to being packaged all within the 2 cold rooms, cooking area and packaging area.

Cheshire Farm products are SALSA accredited, which gives the assurance that all the necessary hygiene requirements and standards comply. So let’s get on to the products... which we have thoroughly enjoyed tasting and testing for you over the last week or two! Shelf life is 3 weeks from packaging, although because they are fresh they can be frozen at home. They are free from additives and preservatives and are all gluten free. We have always been a fan of Cheshire Farm Quality Hand Cooked Chips so we were really keen to try the other products, which

are: Quality Roast Potatoes with goose fat, Spicy Potato Bites infused with Florida firepit spices, Quality Seasoned Potato Wedges coated ^ with Halon Mon Anglesey sea salt and ground black pepper and Quality Sliced Potatoes with rosemary and garlic. The verdict?.... All equally as good as the chips! I especially liked the Spicy Potato bites, I have to admit though that when I pinched one off the baking tray, I thought ‘wow! they are spicy’ however, eaten along side fish and asparagus they were perfect, not over powering but did leave my mouth tingling which I actually like. Running a close second for me would be the Sliced Potatoes, although the wedges were also good as well! - both nice and crispy on the outside but retaining fluffy potato on the inside. One observation we found was that the products needed a little longer cooking time than suggested especially on fan, although that could just be our oven. LIGHTING Lighting really makes a difference to the mood of a bathroom and, if possible, it should be planned in the initial design stages. Include good general, overall lighting, perhaps in the form of inset ceiling spotlights or (less expensive) a ceiling-mounted track, plus some task lights, by the mirror, for shaving or applying make-up. Clever ideas include: storage units that incorporate lighting; fitting uplighters in flooring; an led colour-changing lamp operated by remote control; adding a colourful light stream to your tap water and even illuminated tiles. I was about to ask him if he was a school boy on the run from the Wag Man when he cheerily piped up, “Hi I’m Jason, I’m going to be showing you around the gym.”

Cake and Bake Palmiers These delicious sweet pastries are easy to make using just a sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry and caster sugar. Serve with coffee, or sandwich together in pairs with jam and whipped double cream for an indulgent dessert.

Ingredients: â&#x20AC;˘ 1 x 375g pack ready-rolled puff pastry â&#x20AC;˘ 4 tbsp caster sugar â&#x20AC;˘ 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)

TIP For savoury palmiers, spread the pastry with a little pesto sauce, then scatter over finely grated Parmesan cheese instead of the sugar.

Makes approx 28

1. Unroll the puff pastry sheet and trim the edges to a

neat rectangle, if necessary. Sprinkle over 2 tbsp of the caster sugar and half the cinnamon (if using). Using a rolling pin, gently roll over the sugar to lightly press it into the pastry.

2. Fold in the long sides of the pastry rectangle halfway

towards the centre. Sprinkle over a little more caster sugar and press down with the rolling pin. Fold each long side in again to meet in the centre.

3. Sprinkle with the rest of the sugar and cinnamon

(if using), then fold the pastry in half lengthways to form one long strip. Transfer to a board and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.

4. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Dampen a large baking sheet by sprinkling with cold water.

5. Cut across the chilled pastry length into about 28

thin slices. Place the slices, cut-side down, on the baking sheet. Flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hand.

6. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until

How to Look after Your Dog’s Paws When caring for your dog, it’s easy to overlook their paws unless they are limping, but it’s important to make sure that nothing gets lodged in their pads or stuck in the ‘web’ between their toes. It’s an easy routine though, and consists of just three steps: • Checking regularly for signs of damage or soreness Although puncture wounds may not be immediately visible because of the dark colour of your

dog’s pads, if anything has caused damage the dog will pull away or show signs of discomfort when you touch their feet. Regular checks after each outing will help to prevent infection building up in broken skin, and identify damaged or split claws. • Bathing To flush out any sand or small objects, dip each paw into a shallow container of water and pat dry. Sand in particular causes discomfort if not removed after a walk on the beach, and sharp shells can easily cut the paws. • Keep fur trimmed This is especially important for long-haired breeds with lots of fur between their

pads. Keeping it short allows you to see any damage to the paw, and makes the dog more comfortable when walking. You can buy special creams and waxes to protect your dog’s paws from harsh winter weather, and also from becoming blistered in the summer heat. A damaged paw will put a halt to their activities and can mean an expensive visit to the vet, so prevention is certainly cheaper than cure.

At first glance didn’t look like anything special, but on closer inspection I saw that some fine veneer work was visible in places. “Ten quid. A bit of wire wool and some washing up liquid straight out of the bottle, and that’ll come up lovely.” It sounded unlikely, but I paid the stallholder and took the box home, where I nervously began to rub the surface with a steel wool pad. As the dirt melted away I uncovered an intricate inlaid marquetry design, and my grimy box eventually emerged as a beautiful antique that I’ve loved ever since.

Helsby Community Sports Club “A vision for sport, leisure and recreation in Helsby, Frodsham and the surrounding villages”

The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile is back on Sunday 20th March 2016 – and it’s coming to Helsby! Local heroes from Helsby and the surrounding area will be both walking and running to raise life-changing money to make a difference to people living across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. You are invited to come together and make yourselves proud by entering now at www.sportrelief.com Helsby Community Sports Club on Chester Road are hosting the event were you will find plenty of free parking. The route designed by the Helsby Running Club will include circuits of both the Football and Rugby pitches.
