FRODSHAM PANTO GROUP Rehearsals are well under way for the groups 2017 production of ‘Puss in Boots’. Story – over in the great red castle lives a terribly ferocious ogre called ‘Olaf’ who frightens everyone who lives nearby. He steals a magic wand from ‘Fairy Poppins’ and everyone is very fearful even though he doesn’t know the magic words which will give him the power to use it against them. Hickory, Dickory and Jack are three brothers who live nearby and they fear that he will force them out of their home eventually, as he has already taken over most of the farmland all except the mill in which they live. The mill had been owned by their father and when he died he left them something each in his will. To his eldest son he left the mill, to his middle son he left his donkey and to his youngest son he left his cat. The only magic the fairy has is a small bottle of a potion which would give when taken the power of speech to animals, who is brave enough to use it against ‘Olaf’. Let us see what happens, who will be brave enough to take the potion.

Short Story Christmas is Crafty “We’re doing Christmas differently this year,” Carol announced, carrying in huge shopping bags. “Roger, stop what you’re doing and give me a hand with this tree.” Jonty wagged his tail. He knew all about Christmas, because it happened once every seven years. Roger would set up a tree in the lounge and then climb the creaky loft ladder for the box of decorations. The pair of them would coo over the little snowmen decorations made from cotton wool and toilet roll tubes, the doily angels, and the crepe paper snowflakes that they would stick to the patio doors. Carol would get nostalgic and ask Roger to pour her a sherry and put on a Slade CD. And Jonty would lie under the coffee table, waiting patiently for a mince pie to fall on the floor. “I’ve been to this stall called Christmas is Crafty,” Carol said, unpacking the contents of her bags. “It’s inspired me.” “I like Christmas just the way it is,” Roger said, but judging from the smells coming from Carol’s shopping Jonty wondered whether Christmas had been vastly improved.
“The kids are all grown up now Roger; it’s time to move on,” Carol said, opening a box of dried clementines which had been studded with cloves and tied with sticks of cinnamon. “These things are handmade but better, you know, professional.” Jonty game them an appreciative sniff. “Honestly Jonty, get your nose out and give me some space,” Carol said. “Look at these Roger, good enough to eat?” Jonty’s ears pricked up. Carol showed them a box of gingerbread men delicately decorated with raisin buttons. Then she unravelled a raffia rope threaded with colourful popcorn, and a dozen huge pine cones sprayed with silver and gold. “The theme is Rustic Cottage,” Carol said. “You’ve got to have a theme.” “I thought we already had a theme,” Roger said glumly. “Do stop sulking,” Carol said. “You decorate the tree, while I do a spot of stencilling on the patio doors.”

The raffia strings of popcorn proved interesting; he found there was no stopping once he’d begun, and it was necessary to eat the whole chain right to the end. Then he chased the pine cones across the floor. Finally, tired and queasy, he chewed them all up as well, just for fun.

Cake and Bake Mincemeat & Apple Mini Strudels These delicious sweet and buttery mini fruity strudels make great festive puds over Christmas. You can prepare them a few hours in advance, cover and chill in the fridge and bake just before serving.
Ingredients: • 8 tbsp luxury mincemeat • 1 small cooking apple, peeled and coarsely grated • 8 sheets filo pastry, each measuring 18x31cm • 50g unsalted butter, melted • Filo pastry stars, to decorate (see Tip) • Icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream or brandy butter, to serve
1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark
6. Mix together the mincemeat and grated apple. Take one sheet of filo pastry and brush with some of the melted butter.
2. Place a spoonful of the mincemeat mixture along
one short end of the sheet of buttered pastry. Fold in a little of the pastry along each long side then roll up to enclose the filling. Place seam side down on a large greased baking tray.
3. Repeat with the rest of the pastry sheets and
mincemeat mixture to make 8 mini strudels in total. Brush with any remaining melted butter.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes
until the pastry is crisp and golden. Cool for 5 minutes then halve and serve with filo pastry stars and dust liberally with icing sugar. Serve with whipped cream or brandy butter.
TIP
To make the stars, fold a spare sheet of filo pastry into three. Stamp out tiny stars using a small star-shaped cookie cutter and brush with a little Ready in 35 minutes melted butter. A vacancy has arisen for a Caretaker at Frodsham Community Centre working as part of a team comprising both paid staff and volunteers. The working arrangements are based on a 36 hours per two week shift cycle, days worked are Thursday to Wednesday alternate weeks, working hours are flexible to suit bookings with core attendance times of 10.00 to 14.00 Monday to Friday and 09.00 to 11.00 on Saturday. Current salary is £8.50 /hour, holiday entitlement is 15 Days PA. The caretaker is a significant part of the public face of the Centre they should therefore have good communication and customer service skills and be willing to work pro-actively without supervision. Duties include, customer care, cash receipts, response to public enquiries, cleaning, simple maintenance tasks and furniture set up. The latter requires the physical ability to move and layout quantities of furniture, in and between rooms, on a daily basis. Christmas is just around the corner, and for many of us, it’s a special time to get together with our loved ones that brightens up the darkest time of the year. Unfortunately, ‘the season to be jolly’ is often fraught with pressure to produce the perfect celebration, family tensions and the temptation of too much food and alcohol.

The Victoria Falls By Solange Hando In November 1855, a Scottish missionary sailing down the Zambezi was the first European to set eyes on the awesome falls, long known to the natives as ‘the smoke that thunders’. “Scenes like this,” he mused, “must have been gazed upon by angels on their flight.” His name was David Livingstone and he called the falls ‘Victoria’ to honour his Queen. Stretching 1.7 km across Zambia and Zimbabwe, reaching a height of 108 metres, twice that of Niagara, and pouring an average of 550 million litres of water a minute, the Victoria Falls defy imagination and, with all statistics combined, they are the largest in the world. Mist and spray are visible for 20 km around.
Most visitors view the falls from the Zambian side, where the Eastern Cataract brings the first heart-stopping moment as roaring waters plunge over the edge and the placid upper river continues to flow unaware towards the precipice. But just feet away, the great mass of water tumbles into the ‘boiling pot’, trapped in a massive swirl as it struggles to escape through the tightest of bends. A long flight of slippery steps leads down to the cauldron’s edge, a spine-chilling place where baboons bare their teeth and you might shudder at the sight of a crocodile swept over the edge.

The crisp December air vaporised my breath as I skidded across the drive, shaking the last of the table salt onto the flags as I went. Suddenly I was blinded by a terrible seasonal apparition. Mrs Murphy, my neighbour from over the road, had flicked on her Christmas lights. I staggered back as spots danced before my eyes. The strain on my pupils (not to mention the National Grid) was all too apparent as Mrs Murphy’s much-extended semi-detached hummed into life. Reindeer, gnomes and, bizarrely, a festive ET, blazed out across The Avenue - Yuletide beacons for any passing sleighs or low-flying aircraft. Tripping into the house I stamped my feet on the bristles. “Disneyland is back on again.”

Back home, Sarah grabbed both my Santas, went outside and nailed them violently to the wall. And so the big day, as it always does, came around. The Christmas dinner was almost ready. As the whole brood chatted happily, I
strained to listen to Her Majesty the Queen on the telly while Sarah’s famous bread sauce bubbled on the hob. Then out of the window I noticed that Mrs Murphy’s house was in total darkness. Ignoring Sarah’s complaints about ruining my new slippers, I tip-toed across the road and tapped on the window. Eventually Mrs Murphy appeared. “Are you OK?” I asked hopefully. “No, Mr Hughes, I’m waiting for the emergency electrician but it might be hours yet. My daughter is in London with her boyfriend but...” Mrs Murphy’s tears suddenly began to well up. “Oh Mr Hughes, Christmas isn’t the same since Henry passed
away.” “So you’re on your own in this dark cold house?” “I’m going to put my camper stove on to warm up some soup.” “On Christmas Day? Mrs Murphy - grab your coat.” And so, for the first time ever, Mrs Murphy crossed our threshold and sat down with us for Christmas dinner. Outside the elves and Santas were in darkness, but inside our house the warmth of our toast to Mrs Murphy (sat imperiously on her emergency chair) gave her a smile bright enough to illuminate any seasonal table. Why Collectors Love The Vinyl Vibe By Kate McLelland In recent years there has been a revolution in the way we buy and listen to music. Thanks to new technologies we are now able to play the music we love wherever, and whenever, we want to hear it. With so much emphasis on the streaming of music from services such as Spotify, iTunes and Tidal, the use of minidisks, cassettes and CDs now seems strangely old-fashioned. After all, when you can stream everything you could ever wish to hear direct to your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, who needs a physical format? In spite of all this ingenious and accessible technology, it seems many of us actually prefer to do it the “old school” way. Collecting vinyl records is one of the most surprising trends of the 21st century and fans cite the “authenticity” of analogue sound, the tactile quality of vinyl and the availability of album cover art and liner notes as reasons why they prefer vinyl recordings to digital music files or CDs.

Ring Out The Old, Ring In The New The changing face of Christmas and New Year celebrations by Kate McLelland Imagine you had been lost on a desert island for forty years, and returned just in time to celebrate Christmas and New Year. While at first glance the celebrations might look much the same, dig a little deeper and you’ll find that much has changed since you were away. Our old festive traditions are constantly evolving, but recently the pace of change has quickened: traditions that seemed set in stone almost half a century ago are now rarely celebrated in many parts of the UK. Christmas pudding Christmas puddings are still popular, but this heavy, fruitladen treat is beginning to fall out of favour. Many of us now prefer ice cream-based desserts, trifles, or frankly, anything made with chocolate. You may remember finding a sixpence or a silver charm inside your slice of Christmas pudding. This tradition dates back to the early 13th century, when a Twelfth Night Cake was eaten on the final night of the Christmas celebrations. A dried pea, a silver ring or small crown was included in the cake mixture and whoever found it became ‘king’ or ‘queen’ for the night.

Stuffed Sweet Potatoes Serves 4
Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes
This is a tasty and healthy post-Christmas day family supper and a great way to use up leftover roast turkey.
Ingredients: • 4 medium-sized sweet potatoes, scrubbed • 2tbsp olive oil • 1 red onion, peeled and chopped • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced • 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and sliced • 225g cooked turkey breast, diced • 1 x 230g tub fresh tomato salsa • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 100g Cheddar cheese, grated
Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork and place on a baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until tender. Just before the potatoes are ready, heat half the oil in a frying pan and fry the onion for 6-7 minutes until tender, adding the garlic after 5 minutes. Add the peppers and turkey and fry for a further 2-3 minutes. Stir in 2 tbsp of the tomato salsa and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Halve the baked sweet potatoes and roughly mash up the flesh with a fork. Season lightly and drizzle over half the remaining oil, then pile the turkey and pepper mixture on top of the halves. Scatter over the cheese and drizzle over the rest of the oil. Return to the oven for 10-12 minutes until the cheese has melted. Serve with chopped avocado and lime wedges and sprinkled with freshly chopped parsley. Spoon the rest of the salsa into a small bowl and serve on the side.

Horn’s Mill Pre-school celebrated the formal opening of their new building on 7th October. At the opening ceremony, Sue Huntbach thanked Sharon Wyatt and Councillor Alan Mckie for being instrumental in securing the funding for the new building from CWaC. Thanks were also extended to past and present members of the pre- school committee who raised funds to equip the building and outside areas with stimulating resources for the children.

The Marshes Community Benefit Fund (MCBF) launches on 22nd November 2016. Community projects near the Frodsham Wind Farm could share benefits of up to £120,000 a year. Governed by an independent panel made up of local individuals, the Fund will distribute a grant from Frodsham Wind Farm Limited of up to £120,000 a year across approved projects in Frodsham, Helsby, Elton and surrounding areas. The MCBF coverage area is identified by the map on the website www.marshescbf.uk which will go live shortly after the 22nd November 2016. Community groups, charities, schools, businesses and clubs may apply to the MCBF governing Panel for funding towards not-for-profit projects which are designed to benefit the local communities. Guidelines for applications and details of the award process are available on the MCBF website. The launch of the MCBF runs ahead of the anticipated final commissioning of Frodsham Wind Farm in December this year. The deadline for the first round of applications will be 28th February 2017, all applications for grants will be assessed by the Panel. After three years of tireless fundraising, Little Overtons’ Pre-School, Frodsham, are delighted to announce that they are now fully refurbished and accessible for children as young as two. Following an ITERS inspection in 2013, staff and parents began raising money to ensure the setting met all recommendations. Helsby Rugby Union FC & Hunters of Frodsham Community Project Helsby Rugby Union FC and Hunters Estate Agents, Frodsham have entered into a partnership with the primary aim to enable their members, clients, supporters and friends to help those in need within our local community. Throughout the rugby season our members will be encouraged to participate in this community project in a range of ways:
• November-December 2016 Christmas Foodbank Collection Each week Senior and Junior rugby club members are encouraged to bring to training or the game a non-perishable food item to place in the Foodbank collection box. In December members of Helsby RUFC Juniors will deliver all the food items to Frodsham Fire Station. Collections will also be made at Hunters, 105 Main St, Frodsham. • January-February 2017 Helping the homeless in Chester Helsby RUFC and Hunters, Frodsham will coordinate a collection of new/nearly new hats, scarves, gloves and warm socks for the Soul Kitchen Chester (a community group that supports the homeless and those experiencing extreme poverty in Chester). The organisation can be found on Facebook and meets every Saturday between 5-7pm. Each rugby club member will be asked to contribute 1 item each for the collection. A group of volunteers from HRUFC and Hunters will deliver the items to the Soul Kitchen one Saturday evening. • June/July 2017 Hunters Frodsham Sponsored Touch Rugby Tournament and BBQ This will be a sponsored event to raise funds for a local charity, Claire House Children’s Hospice. The Rugby club will coordinate an end of season Seniors and Juniors, family and friends touch rugby tournament. All participants will contribute a nominal fee to take part which will be donated to Claire House and participants will receive a t-shirt featuring Helsby RUFC/Hunters logos. Barbara Walters retires from the Davies School of Dancing “I have now retired from my dance school after 60 years of teaching due to health problems. I started to teach in Helsby in 1956. I began my teaching career by helping the Girl Guides with a pantomime, also I taught various dance routines to Helsby WI and held several keep fit classes in the area. I opened my own school in Helsby March 1960, teaching Royal Academy Ballet, IDTA and ADA lessons in various forms of dance. Many of my students have been very successful with their dance careers. Two of them were awarded Dance Scholarships with the Royal Academy of Dance, one was accepted by the Royal Ballet, one appeared in the professional performances of the Musicals “Annie”and the “Sound of Music”. Many of them have gone on to dance professionally. One student attended the Rambert Ballet School in London and one joined the Bluebell Girls in Paris.” Enjoy your retirement Barbara!
Food Waste Recycling Cheshire West and Chester Council are working in partnership with Kier and The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to encourage people to recycle their food waste. We throw away over 20,000 tonnes of food waste every year in Cheshire West and Cheshire! So recycling food waste is a priority for us. We provide a weekly collection for food waste along with your other recycling. Simply put all your food waste including plate scrapings, tea bags, peelings, bread and gone off food into your brown food recycling bin. You can use any type of plastic bag to contain the food waste e.g. supermarket carrier bags, pedal bin liners, nappy bags or the bags your fruit and veg comes in. All the food waste we collect gets recycled into energy to power our homes and fertiliser to help our farmers grow more crops. If food gets disposed of in the black bins it can increase greenhouse gas pollution which is its bad for the environment and costs the Council millions of pounds a year – money which would be better spent on local services. So it’s cleaner, greener and more efficient for everyone if we all recycle our food waste every week.
