JTO Vintage and The Old Bank Tea Rooms has been open for just over a year and what a massive success this has been for owner Diane and also a huge plus for Helsby.
I arrived early morning just as freshly baked scones were being dropped off, warm and smelling delicious, straight from the oven. Three local bakers provide all of the wonderful cakes, flapjacks, gingerbreads and scones. Popular demand certainly keeps them all extremely busy! One of the bakers specialises in gluten free cakes, which are prepared and cooked in a completely gluten free environment.
could utilise her beautiful collection of vintage cups and saucers that she had collected over the years, by providing a few tables for tea and cake whilst people browsed. Having taken on the premises in Helsby, Diane imagined customising furniture at the rear of the property whilst a customer or two enjoyed the hospitality at the front, the patronage obviously had other ideas as it has now become THE place to meet up and the ‘hub’ of the village. Wow, the tea room has exploded and Diane readily admits that she never envisaged this amount of tables!
Originally drinks and cakes were on offer but due to public demand toasted fruit loaf and crumpets soon followed and then soup, savoury tartlets (also baked locally), and paninis served with salad leaves, dressing and chutneys were greatly received as a lunchtime option.
Prior to JTO Vintage & The Old Bank Tea Rooms, Diane had two units at Lady Heyes Craft Centre. Specialising in up-cycled, shabby chique vintage furniture, which went very well but Diane larger premises where727 she165And so, once again more space was needed. Luckily Diane was able to utilise the adjoining outdoor space and garage, which provides a superb area to display more furniture and also the perfect place to call in for refreshments if you are out walking the dog. Cyclists are also regular visitors. A lovely touch is the hot water bottles that are provided for those braving the elements! In addition, the decking and garden area has a sandpit and other toys and Diane is keen to advance this further next summer.
Inside there is also a play corner for children, who can entertain themselves with the wooden farm and colouring while mum enjoys a cuppa. Many high school and pre-high school pupils regularly meet up here at the end of the day. It’s an ideal place for children who are starting to have a bit of independence; parents often pick them up from JTO Vintage & The Old Bank Tea Rooms rather than school. Diane is quick to point out how well behaved and polite they are. The staff affectionately call them ‘The Rocky Roaders’ because of their love of a particular cake that also goes by that name. Harry’s Milk Shakes are also very popular, another local producer who was in 2011 Big Brother!
There’s gifts, toys, books and puzzles for children - perfect for birthday parties and Christmas stocking fillers and also party bags.
Silver jewellery which is handmade locally, gem stone and antique pieces are nicely displayed and I just love the Susie Watson Designs collection of handmade pottery and kitchen accessories. Beautiful cushions, aprons, candles and crockery. As a stockist, Diane can order in any specific item from the Susie Watson range and catalogues are available to browse through. “Little Cotton Frocks’ are delightful dresses for children aged 0-9 years, all created locally by Kath Shingler. Several local people work in the shop, many of whom have been a friend of Diane’s for years, she also relies on an army of helpers who help out when needed, washing up, clearing the tables and packing up at the end of the day. It’s such a friendly, happy place to work. Upstairs is Helsby Holistics, a lovely restful room, Emi provides a range of treatments to help improve your physical and mental wellbeing.

Short Story Waking up to Wheezy “Daffers, come quick!” Barry called from the front garden. “It’s happened again.”
“It’s probably teenagers,” she said calmly. “You know how creative they can be.”
Daphne sighed and lifted the cat off her lap. Snow was falling in soft fat flakes and she had no desire to go outside. Anyway, she could guess what this was all about. Ever since Barry had bought that eight foot inflatable snowman from a car boot sale there’d been nothing but trouble. Why couldn’t he just have put up some festive outdoor lights like everyone else?
Yesterday morning they had found Wheezy perched on the garden wall in the lotus position, and the night before someone had gaffer taped its hands so it looked like it was clinging to the guttering above the lounge window.
She slowly changed out of her slippers and wrapped a thick scarf round her neck. Through the hall window she could see Barry pacing up and down the drive. She could also see that the space next to the cherry tree where the snowman usually stooped - it couldn’t stand upright because it had several slow punctures - was empty. “Oh good, you’re here,” Barry said, his hot breath turning to clouds of mist in the air, “it’s sabotage, that’s what it is.” “What is dear?” Daphne asked innocently. “Just look,” he said, pointing at the garage door. Someone had arranged Wheezy (for that’s what she privately called the snowman) so that it was pinned beneath the garage door, half in and half out of the garage. She covered her mouth quickly with her hand.
“I’ve a good mind to call the police,” Barry said, pulling open the garage door. “Oh, really?” Daphne had been waiting for this. “And what do you expect them to do about it? Round the clock surveillance?” “I could install CCTV,” Barry mumbled. “It’s hardly worth it dear,” she said quickly, “just for a cheap snowman with a sinister grin, who looks like he’s had a fight with a puncture repair kit.” Wheezy did have a strange expression. After Barry got it home he attempted to clean it up with white spirit, which had only resulted in smearing the paintwork on the snowman’s face. Now its mouth seemed to grimace. The neighbours had complained that it frightened their kids. “You’re a light sleeper, didn’t you hear anything?” Barry asked. “Only the sound of hot air escaping,” Daphne said under her breath.

Daphne sighed. It seemed the snowman would be terrifying the local residents for another night. But Daphne was a woman of quiet invention. She had plenty more adventures for Wheezy up her sleeve.

Lounging around
If you’re going to need somewhere for everyone to relax in the living room, bring in beanbags for the kids and pop cushions on top of coffee tables and benches to create a few extra TV-viewing spaces.
A bed for the night
No guest room? No problem. A sofa bed, day bed or futon – or simply a longish sofa – will do the trick. A good quality airbed is a great thing to have, too. If your living room is acting as a temporary bedroom, clear space for your guests’ luggage and place a small lamp near the head of their ‘bed’ and a spare throw or blanket nearby. Use a
An extendable dining table is perfect for accommodating additional guests; alternatively enlarge your table temporarily by topping it with an overhanging sheet of plywood (you might want to protect the table with a pad or cloth first), covered with a pretty tablecloth. Extra guests means a proliferation of coats, shoes, boots and umbrellas, so a simple stacking shoe rack will always come in handy, as will a few extra hooks mounted on the wall. How about a free-standing coat rack? Or, for cheap and instant spacesaving, over-door racks, hooks and shoe organisers can be added anywhere in the house.
Eat, drink and be merry
Aim to create enough room in your kitchen to store all your festive goodies by clearing out your cupboards and fridge in good time. Add internal racks, shelves, boxes and baskets so you can stack everything neatly (clear plastic makes it easy to see everything at once).
Bathroom bliss
Clear plenty of space for your guests to store their toiletries before they arrive and look for bath and shower caddies that attach by hook or suction, allowing you to stock all sorts of products out of the way. Provide clean towels on a separate hook or rail from your own – a clothes airer that hooks over a radiator is ideal – and some luxury soaps. Your visitors will never want to go home…

What type of financial help is available for first time buyers? By Ann Haldon
The thought of buying your first home can be daunting, but there’s help available from the government that you may not know about. Equity loans and mortgage guarantees combine within the Help to Buy scheme, which has been a popular option for many people wanting to get their foot on the property ladder. Other possibilities include Shared Ownership schemes and Help to Buy ISA products. Additionally, choosing a fixed rate mortgage deal will help you to budget effectively and provides peace of mind that you can afford the repayments. Help to Buy Equity Loan You only need to find a deposit of 5% as the government loans you the remaining 20%. The loan is offered interestfree for the first five years, with an interest rate of 1.75% being charged in year six on the amount of the original loan. Subsequent annual rate increases are in line with inflation, using the Retail Price Index plus 1%. You’ll be able to repay part of the loan early without penalty if you want, and you can sell your home whenever you like. The repayment figure on sale is based on the property’s value at the time so that the government benefits from its rise in value. Mortgage Guarantee This part of the Help to Buy Please mention Helsby
scheme is available until 31st December 2016 for new-builds and older homes. It is valid for properties worth up to £600,000, and the government provides a guarantee to mortgage lenders for up to 15% of the property value. The scheme is geared towards purchasers with a low deposit, and is intended to encourage confidence in lenders that their money is safe, increasing the likelihood of them offering a larger number of 95% loan-tovalue mortgages. Shared Ownership The Shared Ownership scheme enables you to own a proportion of your home - usually between 25% and 75% of the property’s value. You pay rent to a housing association on the remaining proportion, but at a subsidised rate. Shared Ownership helps people to buy their first home because rents are generally low, and are paid in conjunction with a mortgage. The housing association may allow you to purchase more of your home over time – usually up to its full value. Help to Buy ISA The Help to Buy ISA is a new product offered by the government, and is due to be introduced this month (December). If you make a lump sum deposit of £1,000 theHand government boost this to to whenwill responding
amount tax-free by up to £250 when you buy your home, plus by another £50 for each further £200 of monthly savings. There is a limit on these tax free bonuses, however, of £3,000. Fixing your mortgage rate If you fix your mortgage rate you’ll be able to budget with confidence, and won’t need to worry about mortgage interest rate rises. Interest rates are expected to increase in the spring of 2016, so this is a good time to look for a suitable fixed rate deal. It can be difficult to know for how long to fix your rate, but with increases expected over the next few years a five-year term might be the best choice, even though the rates offered will be higher than deals over two or three years. Cake and Bake
Stollen This spiced and fruity Continental sweet bread is perfect for serving over the festive season with a glass of warm mulled wine.
Ingredients: • 50g butter • 175ml milk • 3 tbsp caster sugar • 375g strong plain white flour, plus extra for kneading • � tsp salt • 1 tsp ground mixed spice • 2 tsp fast-action dried yeast • Zest of 1 lemon • 1 large egg, beaten • 125g raisins • 25g chopped mixed peel • 50g glace cherries, rinsed, dried and quartered • 175g marzipan • Melted butter, for brushing • Icing sugar, for dusting
1. Put the butter, milk and caster sugar in a small pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved and the butter has melted. Leave to cool for 10 minutes. 2. Sift the flour, salt and mixed spice into a large bowl and stir in the dried yeast. Make a well in the centre and stir in the milk mixture, lemon zest and egg. Mix together with a round-bladed knife to form a soft and sticky dough. 3. Turn the dough onto a well floured surface and knead for 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic. At first the dough will be quite sticky so add more flour as necessary. 4. Flatten out the dough and knead in the raisins, cherries and peel until just combined. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place for about 1� hours, or until doubled in size. 5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes, then roll out to a 25cm square. Shape the marzipan into a sausage shape and place down the centre of the dough. Fold one side over to cover the marzipan then repeat with the other side, overlapping in the centre. Seal the ends. Place seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover with oiled cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size. Preheat the oven to 190°C, fan 170°C, gas 5.
6. Bake the stollen for 35-45 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped underneath. Brush the hot stollen all over with melted butter and roll in the icing sugar to coat. Leave to cool. Ready in about 3 hours 77 Please mention Helsby to Hand when responding to adverts

“Don’t buy me anything. There’s nothing I need.” Isn’t that the most irritating thing anyone can say to you in the lead-up to Christmas? Especially after you’ve searched the shops for hours or pored over hundreds of websites, trying to think of a suitable present. It’s the festive season, and not buying anything just isn’t an option, unless you want to feel like a cross between the Grinch and Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas morning. But what do you get for those friends or family members who genuinely seem to have everything? I’m not talking a mansion, a yacht and a Ferrari: just all the things they need for comfortable, everyday living.

Thinking of buying a hamster? Which type should you choose? As one of the most popular small pets in the UK, hamsters take pride of place in many homes. They can make a great first pet for children, although they do not tolerate rough handling, so you need to make sure that younger ones treat them gently. Dwarf vs golden hamsters Not many people know that you can buy dwarf hamsters as an alternative to the more commonly known Syrian, or golden hamster. Syrian
hamsters live for 2-3 years on average, and are very solitary in nature. They should be kept on their own in a cage, as they display a strong tendency to fight with other hamsters.

Dwarf hamsters grow to approximately 8cm in length. They look extremely cute, but beware if they escape their cage – they can be very difficult to catch! This type of hamster is not as solitary as its golden counterpart, but even so it is advisable to check with the breeder or pet shop whether two or more hamsters would mix. Nativity Festival at
Weaver Vale Autumn Group Meeting Brace, brace, brace was the order given to the members of the Weaver Vale group of WI’s at their Autumn meeting on October 15th. This order was given by coxswain and pilot Sue Hickman Marsay when she spoke to members of her work now as a captain of a pilot boat on the Humber estuary. She also spoke of her previous work as a trainer of pilots, crew and workers from the North Sea oil rigs. Members were taken through a practice safety routine of what would happen if the helicopter has to make an emergency landing. This was where the scary but necessary brace is used. Speaking vividly about her voluntary work with the Hornsea Inshore Lifeboat Service members could appreciate how close to her heart that work is.

Guests attending included County Chairwoman Frances Woollam, members of the CFWI board, Village, Forest and North Cheshire Groups. During the afternoon Helsby Hillside were presented with the Group Bowls Trophy and Norley WI with a cheque for the Group Bursary. Next meeting is on Wednesday May 18th and is the Spring Evening Meeting.
