Method: • Empty your Rogan Josh spice blend into a

pan, add 500ml cold water and simmer for 3/4 minutes • Add your main ingredient, together with the chopped onion, cover and cook gently either on your hob or in your oven. • For the last 10 minutes add the tomatoes and cook uncovered to reduce the sauce. • Right at the end add fresh coriander to taste and serve. Your Joint Bank Account Could Be Frozen if Capacity is Lost By Nikki Barnes, Wills and Probate Solicitor of Rowlinsons Solicitors and a member of The Society of Trusts and Estates Practitioners (STEP). Many married couples are blissfully unaware that if one of them loses mental capacity, the other account holder does not have an automatic right to access the account. In fact, most banks and other ﬁnancial institutions will not only freeze sole accounts but will also freeze joint holdings as soon as they become aware of one holder becoming incapable of making decisions.

The Banks Have a Right to Freeze Your Assets The British Bankers’ Association (BBA) states that your bank account will be frozen if you lose capacity and one of the following is not in place: • Lasting power of attorney (LPA) • Enduring power of attorney (EPA) • An order from the Court of Protection

The banks do not carry out such an action merely to be awkward but they are under a duty to safeguard the funds of someone who has lost mental capacity. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA allows you to nominate someone you trust to make ﬁnancial decisions on your behalf. EPAs also allow someone to make ﬁnancial decisions on your behalf. LPAs replaced EPAs under The Mental Capacity Act 2005, but EPAs are still valid if they were drawn up before 1st October 2007.

A Joint Account Won’t Protect Your Loved Ones Putting assets into joint names, for example with a spouse or a child, will not be adequate to guarantee continued access to the bank account. Without a registered Property and Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney in place, your assets will be frozen and this could lead to problems such as paying bills and the mortgage. Having a Financial Lasting Power of Attorney in place will prevent this situation

arising and, if you do lose mental capacity, it will also prevent the need for your family having to go down the alternative route of applying for a deputyship order from the Court of Protection; which is a longer, drawn out process and is much more expensive and considerably more onerous on your appointed deputies.

Short Story The Too Hot Tub

“What are you doing here?” Tony asked. “Come to check up on me?”

Richard had anticipated some chaos when he popped round to visit his dad, but hadn’t expected to find him on the patio stood up to his armpits in a wheelie bin full of water.

“Don’t the goldfish mind?” queried Richard.

“No,” Richard lied. “Mum asked me to pop round to see if you’ve watered her Busy Lizzies.” Though the sight of the drooping bedding plants had already answered that question for him. “Do you want me to ask what you’re doing?” Richard asked. ”Or is it better if I don’t know?” “I don’t mind telling you,” Tony said, “so long as you don’t spoil the surprise for your mum.” “The surprise that you’ve filled your dustbin with water and then climbed in it?” Richard asked. “No longer a dustbin, Dickie,” Tony said proudly. “What you have here is a fully functioning hot tub. I wanted to surprise your mum when she got back from her spa weekend.” “She’ll certainly be surprised,” Richard agreed. “She can sit in here of an evening and put her white wine spritzer and pickled onions on the open lid.” Tony tapped the lid behind him where an empty pickled onion jar was rolling around. “These things go for megabucks.” “Why’s it bubbling like that?” Richard asked, studying the dark water more closely. “I borrowed the pump out of

“They’ll be alright for a bit,” Tony said. “And how are you heating the water?” Richard asked. “You what?” Tony said. “It’s a hot tub, so how are you making it hot?” “No, it doesn’t want to be hot,” Tony scratched his ear with the pickled onion fork, “it’s for when you’re too hot, you know, to cool you down a bit.” “So you’ve filled the dustbin with cold water, stuck the fish tank pump in there and climbed in,” Richard said as calmly as possible. “Pleasant is it?” “It’s not bad.” Tony’s teeth rattled slightly. “I could stay in here all day.” “Surely you’d start to prune after a bit?” Richard noticed his dad’s finger tips. “How long have you been in there exactly?” “Not long,” Tony said defensively, “I’ll get out when you’ve gone. Probably could do with a spot of lunch, now that I’ve eaten all the pickled onions.” “Why not get out now?” Richard said, then a horrible thought flashed through his mind. “You’re not naked in there are you?” “No!” Tony batted the suggestion away. “I’ve got my best undercrackers on.”

“So get out then,” Richard said. “Like I said,” Tony looked uncomfortable, “in a bit.” “You can’t get out,” Richard grinned, “can you?” “I did have a try earlier,” Tony said. “I’ll have another go in a bit.” “Do you want some help?” “No, I’m fine.” “You’re stuck aren’t you?” “Well, maybe just a little bit.” Richard walked around the dustbin assessing the situation. “Hang on, Dad.” He took a firm hold of the back of the bin and tipped. “It’ll be easier if we release some of the water first.” The water sploshed gently over the side, wetting Richard’s feet. “Careful Dickie,” Tony said nervously, “there are quite a few gallons in here.” Just then the sheer weight overwhelmed Richard and the whole bin tipped over. Tony was thrown out onto the patio like the contents of a trawler net. “At least we’ve watered the Busy Lizzies,” Richard said. “You alright?” “Never better.” Tony picked himself up. “Is there time to refill it before your mum gets back?” By Jackie Brewster

Beer of the Month

It’s the fashion among ale-drinkers to while away a hot August afternoon with a golden ale – you know, one of those modern pale ales that’s so overburdened with exotic hops that all you can taste is nettles. But for those of us who still believe that sunny afternoons were made for cricket not rock festivals, I have a couple of beery suggestions that are still refreshing and still hoppy, but less abrasive and altogether more mellow. Although founded in 1777, Dorset’s Badger Brewery has become a trailblazer in the bottled beer market, with an innovative range that is unafraid of ingredients like liquorice, ginger, and elderflower; and the moment you uncap a bottle of 4.5% alcohol Golden Glory, you know what’s in it: peach blossom. So – a fruity beer for that summer sundowner? Why not? The Belgians use loads of fruit, and they’re (supposedly) the best brewers in the world. Golden Glory pours an attractive dark gold with a thick foamy head. The nose is heady with peach to the exclusion of all else; on the palate, though, the peach is less pronounced. There’s still an overtone, but the more traditional malt comes through strongly, and then in the finish there’s what there ought to be – hop bitterness. St Peter’s Brewery of Suffolk celebrates its 20th birthday this year but has loads of history behind it. Its home is a moated Tudor farmhouse deep in a maze of lanes, which was built with bits of architectural salvage from the nearby priory, including an entire church window of intricatelycarved tracery. A truly unique place, and well worth a visit. Its huge bottled range includes grapefruit beer, honey beer, a stout, a porter, an IPA and many others; but in August we’ll try the Organic Ale at 4.5% alcohol. The beer is a dark gold colour, and there’s a hint of biscuity malt offset by lemony hops in the aroma. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with a palate that balances rich toffee, an overtone of marmalade, and just a suggestion of barley wine that makes the beer drink above its weight. The finish is all hop, though, long and dry and bitter, making it the perfect quencher for all that fine August weather I hope we’ll be getting. By Ted Bruning

Magpies The Farmers Friend Due to ignorance the Magpie, like the shark has been given an undeserved reputation. True, it will take young birds from their nests if the chance occurs but so will a Woodpecker. The latter not only takes young from their nests but can enlarge the hole to get into them and take the lot! A Sparrow hawk relies entirely on small birds up to a pigeon size but see the excitement people get from sighting these two birds.

Last year my next door neighbour was disturbed by a very loud drumming and coming out to see if ‘yours truly’ was loose again with his hammer were amazed to see that it was a Woodpecker trying to get into the Tit box I have below my back bedroom window. But the Magpie is clever. A colleague who had gone to see another friend, also

a ranger in Wales was told to watch what happened to his fresh milk delivery in bottles. Soon a Magpie came and took all the cream from the top until it could no longer reach the milk so it went away and returned with a pebble and dropped it in the milk, then another and another and using Archimedes principle the pebbles replaced the milk until the Magpie could have another drink! Now who can’t love and admire such a clever bird. It doesn’t end there as it’s main source of food comes from the land when it sees off many pests that destroy good crops. A twenty year study of Magpies by a devout bird man showed there were more small birds in a Magpies area than outside it, probably due to the agressive nature of the Magpie to keep others out of its area there by protecting the majority of small birds. I love to see them in my garden. They are beautiful in plumage and clever in science - how many of you knew the principle of liquid replacement before you were taught it? No, if you’re going to welcome a visitor to your garden encourage a Magpie, not the cat from your neighbour!

Will your dog take the plunge? Although swimming is one of the best exercises for your dog, as well as being a fun activity, not all dogs take well to swimming, and some are literally unable to swim due to their physiology. The short muzzle on bulldogs and pugs, for example, makes it very difficult to keep their nose and mouth above water and they are forced to take on an almost vertical position in order to stay afloat. Other breeds such as Labradors take to the water with a little too much enthusiasm at times, and it can seem impossible to get them out. Encouraging your dog to swim But if you have a reluctant swimmer on your hands, how can you persuade them to take the plunge?

Modern technology is a great tool for communication and information sharing, but it’s not always good for our health. The problem: Poor Sleep. Blue light emitted by many of our phones, tablets, monitors and flat-screen TVs can adversely affect melatonin, our sleep-inducing hormone. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration, reaction times and immunity, and can stimulate appetite. Long-term, it may affect language processing and our sense of time, and contribute to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Answer: Turn devices off for an hour before bedtime and reduce screen brightness in the evening. The problem: CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) CVS symptoms include eye muscle strain, eye irritation, blurred or double vision, headaches and neck pain. It’s caused by asking our eyes to cope with constant glare and focus readjustment as they flick between different images and text.

The problem: Prolonged Sitting Research shows that prolonged sitting can seriously damage our health and shorten life expectancy - even if we exercise regularly. The Answer: Avoid prolonged sitting when possible, but if it’s unavoidable, break it up with short stints of activity, e.g. housework or a lunchtime football game. Also try: • Standing on public transport. • Walking/biking all or part of the way to work. • Investing in a standing, treadmill or convertible desk (or conversion equipment for your normal desk or treadmill). • Sitting on a yoga ball, which requires constant but subtle effort to stay balanced. • Active Sitting: try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lowering your leg from the knee or the hip height; swivelling your office chair with your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders.

Cake and Bake Tropical Fruit Roulade A lovely light and fruity dessert that’s ideal for summer entertaining. You can vary the fruit filling, try fresh chopped peaches and raspberries or strawberries and blueberries if preferred.

Ingredients: • 5 large eggs • 165g caster sugar • 4 tbsp plain flour • 300ml double cream • 2 passion fruit • 1 small ripe mango

Serves 8

1. Preheat the oven to 180/fan 160C/Gas 4. Grease a 33cm x 23cm Swiss roll tin and line the base and sides with lightly greased baking paper.

2. Place the eggs and 150g of the caster sugar in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water and whisk with an electric whisk until the mixture is very pale and thick (see tip). Remove from the heat and continue whisking until the mixture leaves a trail when the whisk is lifted.

3. Sift the flour over the mixture and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and tilt the tin to level the surface. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and just firm to the touch.

Kingsley Players Triumph at Cheshire Theatre Guild Awards Kingsley Players have stormed to success in the annual Cheshire Theatre Guild awards, staged this month. The group’s production of Oliver, performed in January, was named Best Production with musical content. Tom Hayes and Shara Blanchard, who played Romeo and Juliet, in the Kingsley Players’ innovative Bite-sized Shakespeare production in October were jointly named Best Youngster in a Senior Production. And in the Dramatic Achievement category, actor Matt Jones, who performed a mesmerising monologue as Graham in Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads and Bite-sized Shakespeare, directed and devised by Ed Green, were both short-listed. Lynn Pegler, who directed the Oliver production, said: “We are thrilled to have been so successful in the awards against strong competition from theatre groups all over the county. The Best Production award is testament to the fantastic community effort that goes into every show. The Oliver production had a cast of more than 50 adults and children, and played five sell-out shows. Everything from costumes, set, lighting and sound to backstage crew and the wonderful performers – everyone gave 100 per cent. Funding approved for Door2Door Project in Frodsham Community Centre. Frodsham resident and visitors to Frodsham Community Centre are set to get a much improve welcome to Frodsham Community Centre thanks to a £47,000 grant from funding body WREN. The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to refurbish the public areas from the front door to the emergency exits at the back, hence Door2Door Project. Roger Williams, Chair of Frodsham Community Association, believes the improvements will really enhance the building and appeal to the many visitors who come through the doors. He says:” This project will provide a real boost to the people of Frodsham. It’s fantastic that WREN as awarded us this money and we are really looking forward to the changes taking shape over the next few months”. Hopefully the Door2Door project will be ready in September. WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Richard Smith, WREN’s grant manager for Cheshire, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Frodsham Community Centre project and pleased our funding will make such a difference to so many groups of people across Frodsham. Helsby Golf Club Captain’s 6 County Challenge raises £8,500 The Captain of Helsby Golf Club, Steve Cunniffe, is also a trustee of the club’s Powered Wheelchair Appeal and during his year of office he wanted to raise funds for the Appeal. He and former Captain Martin Mann came up with the perfect challenge – playing 6 rounds of golf in 6 counties around the longest day of the year! The challenge began at 3.25am on the morning of Monday 20th June and during the next 16 hours, he played a round of 18 holes of golf at each of the following venues – • Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club in LANCASHIRE (he played the first 6 holes in the dark using luminous balls!) • Bentham Golf Club in YORKSHIRE • Kirkby Lonsdale Golf Club in CUMBRIA • Barlaston Golf Club in STAFFORDSHIRE • Market Drayton Golf Club in SHROPSHIRE (Steve was joined here by Helsby Lady Captain, Penny Ainsworth who also played the last 2 courses) • Finally back to CHESHIRE, and to Helsby Golf club Steve had to play in heavy rain to begin with but the weather improved as the day went on and he managed to overcome delays with traffic on the M6. The reception to celebrate the achievement was fantastic and everyone enjoyed a hog roast, provided by the catering team led by Kieran and Natalie, and back in the clubhouse, (after a celebratory and well deserved beer!) Steve was delighted to announce that around £8,500 had been raised for the charity. He thanked all who donated, Lady Captain Penny, his helpers and all the Golf Clubs (Garstang,

Lady Captain Penny & Captain Steve Bentham, Kirkby Lonsdale, Barlaston and Market Drayton) for the courtesy of their courses and support in ensuring that everything went to plan. During the day his progress was tracked through the club’s twitter feed with retweets from ITV presenter Lucy Meacock and legendary golf commentator Peter Alliss. Steve also got a mention for the challenge on the Chris Evans Radio 2 breakfast show. Overall he had travelled 261 miles, spent 10 hours 58 minutes playing108 holes of golf, scored 508 gross, net 448 and lost 1 ball!
