Short Story The Test of a Good Raspberry “Did you grow these raspberries yourself Mrs Miles?” Richard asked, running low on small talk. Before they’d arrived, his girlfriend Ruby had hinted it was critical he make a good first impression on her grandmother. Then she’d abandoned him in the kitchen while she went out to fetch in the washing. She was taking her time. “Oh yes”, Ruby’s grandmother showed no signs of being put out to have a strange young man sat at her kitchen table, “and call me Betty”. It was clear that Betty liked feeding her guests. The more he ate, the more she seemed to warm to him. So far he’d put away three scones, two cups of tea and a fat wedge of pork pie. All he had to do now was eat this bowlful of raspberries to secure that vital seal of approval. He picked up his spoon and looked down at the fruit. Beneath the thick layer of sugar Betty had sprinkled over them, the raspberries appeared to be moving. He looked closer. Amongst the fruit, hundreds of greenfly staggered drunkenly, unable to decide whether this was the best, or the worst day of their lives. “These look delicious”, Richard said. His spoon hovered above the bowl.

smiled, “No nasty pesticides or anything like that”. “No need to even wash them then”, Richard said, hoping to jog Betty’s memory about the obviously overlooked stage of food preparation. “The test of a good raspberry is that it doesn’t need washing”, Betty whispered confidentially, “spoils the flavour”. “Quite right”, Richard coughed. Richard looked miserably at the contents of his bowl, unable to bring himself to offend poor Betty. “Something wrong?” Betty said. “Can I tempt you to a drop of evaporated milk with them?” Before he could refuse she’d disappeared into the dark cave of the pantry. Richard grabbed the opportunity to save a couple of the bewildered greenfly from their grizzly fate. It was the least he could do. “These things never go out of date do they?” Betty reappeared with a small rusty tin of evaporated milk. “It doesn’t even have a sell by date on it, which is a good sign”. Richard thought this was the worst possible sign. How could he tell Ruby that her grandmother was losing her mind? Betty rooted around in the cutlery drawer, “That tin opener’s gone walkabout again”, she sighed.

the tin opener was found. “Don’t open that big tin just for me”, he said cheerfully. Then, taking a deep breath, he closed his eyes and spooned the raspberries into his mouth. It was an unpleasant mixture of flavours and textures, sweet and bitter, soft and crunchy. He swallowed after the minimum of chewing, meanwhile scooping up the next mouthful, until the bowl was finally empty. It may have only taken a minute, but it seemed to last an eternity. “Delicious Betty”, Richard said with one final gulp. “Really lovely, thank you”. “I expect you’ll want another cup of tea now?” Betty said. “Perfect”, Richard said, glad to have something to wash it all down. “And well done Ducky, you’ve passed the test”. Betty poured a cup of thick brown tea. Thank you”, Richard said in surprise, “but what test?” She picked up his empty bowl and winked, “a bit of protein never did anyone any harm”.

Late nights, lazy days at the beach and endless mojitos… we do love summer holidays. Whether you’re heading off for a week in the Canaries, catching a cruise ship to the Caribbean, or just taking the kids camping to Cornwall, feast your eyes on our pick of the latest beauty releases. Cake and Bake Caramel Apple Sponge Bake This delicious moist sponge makes a perfect pudding for a special lunch. Serve warm or cold with ice cream or a spoonful of tangy crème fraiche.

Ingredients: • 100g granulated sugar • 4 tbsp cold water • 2 dessert apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced • 200g self-raising flour • � tsp baking powder • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • 200g caster sugar • 200g unsalted butter, softened • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten • 3-5 tbsp milk • Icing sugar, to dust • Scoops of vanilla ice cream and lemon balm sprigs, to serve

Makes 9 squares

1. Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Grease a 23cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and two sides with a baking paper. 2. Put the granulated sugar and water in a heavy-based saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the syrup to the boil and continue boiling, without stirring, until the syrup has turned to a golden caramel. 3. Carefully pour the hot caramel into the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the apples slices over the caramel (don’t worry if the caramel has set). 4. Sift the flour, baking powder and cinnamon into a large bowl and add the caster sugar, butter and eggs. Using a hand-held electric whisk, beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes until smooth and creamy. Whisk in enough of the milk to give a soft dropping consistency. 5. Spoon the mixture over the apples and gently level the surface. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes or until the sponge is golden and springy to the touch and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. 6. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10-15 minutes then carefully lift it out of the tin using the baking paper up the two sides of the tin. Cut into 9 squares and serve warm or cold, dusted with icing sugar. Top each square with scoop of ice cream and decorate with a sprig of lemon balm.

Have you missed out on a summer holiday again this year, or do you still think longingly of that fabulous tropical trip you had a few years back? This time of year, as the summer’s end is not too far away, is when so many of us wish for that exotic holiday we never quite had! So why not try to recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead? The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing …..and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip.

Rising fuel prices make the news all too often and while we can’t escape rising fuel costs, we are not entirely defenceless. Here are some simple fuel-saving tips we can adopt for every journey:

Nearly all cars sold these days have engine stop/ start eco systems fitted as standard, But, if yours doesn’t, turn off the engine if you think you’ll be stationary for a while.

There are only three major rules we all should follow: drive smoothly, accelerate gently, read the road ahead. Keep to the designated speed limits. Driving at 70mph can use up to 11 per cent more fuel than at 65mph. If you have cruise control, use it. As a motoring journalist, I drive many thousands of miles every year and I’ve proven the fuel-saving benefits of cruise-control many times over. Check your tyre pressures regularly and follow the recommended pressures set by the car’s

Change up through the gears as early as possible, but without making the engine labour. Diesels can change up a gear when revs reach around 1,500rpm. Changing up at around 2,300 for petrol engines should make a difference. On a down slope, don’t be tempted to put the car in neutral as it won’t save fuel. In neutral, the engine is at idle so is still using fuel. In gear - but not under power – modern electronic fuel systems cut off fuel to the engine. De-clutter and shed excess weight such as roof racks. The lighter your car the less fuel it needs to burn to maintain the desired momentum. By Wayne Gorrett

Tech It With You The best gadgets to take travelling

It’s that time of year again: time to jump in trains, planes or aeroplanes to head for some much needed rest and relaxation. Whether it’s keeping the kids entertained, getting a beach party started or helping you catch up on your reading list, tech will be an essential companion. For most of us, the worst bit of any holiday is all the hanging around - especially if there are children to amuse in the fun-free environs of an airport. We’ve found Apple’s iPad Mini a real godsend in such circumstances, as it can be filled with a mix of games, movies, ebooks and apps to keep children of all ages amused. We’d strongly recommend a set of headphones and a sturdy protective case, though: the only thing louder than some kid’s apps is the noise we make when we see the iPad dropped onto a concrete floor.

You can take the MiFi abroad, too, so for example Three offers support in some 138 countries, but check the prices carefully: mobile data in some countries can be very expensive. For your own amusement we can’t praise Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader highly enough: over the years it’s got better and sharper while the price has plummeted. The cheapest one is now just £59 and has a battery that’s likely to last longer than your holiday. If magazines are more your thing, a tablet or laptop running the excellent Readly service (£9.99) per month gives you access to stacks of really good magazines that you can download before you travel. And don’t forget audiobooks, such as the extensive selection available for almost any device at Audible.com.

£12 X-Mini 2: it’s tiny, delivers decent enough sound for a barbecue and runs for ages without needing new batteries. Pricier speakers may offer better sound, but they weigh and cost a lot more too. The single best gadget you can take travelling, though, is a smartphone. You don’t need an expensive one to benefit from them: Google’s excellent Translate app breaks down language barriers on the cheapest phones, while Nokia’s HERE maps don’t need a data connection to give you GPS sat-nav when you’re abroad. When you consider all the various things a phone can do - mapping, online banking, flight checking, emergency calling, researching potential destinations, playing music, taking photos, recording video and much, much more - a good smartphone is a must-have travel accessory. If you’re on a tight budget you can pick up a good Android phone such as a Motorola E or G for less than £100. It’s money well spent. Just don’t forget to pack the charger!

By Kate McLelland In the late 1980s the arrival of a tiny American songbird (blown off course during its annual migration) in Larkfield, Kent, led to a mass-mobilisation of the nation’s bird lovers. Over the course of several days 2500 “twitchers” crowded into the small Tesco car park that the golden-winged warbler had chosen as its temporary home. In the 1980s a twitcher (the term for someone who is willing to travel many miles in order to see a rare bird at first hand) would need to rely on radio or TV reports, or home phone calls from fellow enthusiasts, in order to learn about a rare bird’s visit. Now, thanks to mobile communication, the news can be spread within seconds of the first sighting. Just this year 500 people appeared on a Norfolk beach in a matter of hours after a rare citril finch - normally only found in alpine areas of Europe – was first observed.

The new Honda Civic Type R is an extreme car and has been well worth the wait. Its target buyer will be someone who doesn’t welcome compromise – and who sports deep enough pockets to live with that decision. I knew from Sarah’s desperate phone call that the situation was urgent. “Tom, has it arrived or not?” “Yes, the courier’s just been.” “Right, let’s just hope it fits. Coronation Chicken Serves 6

Ready in 20 minutes, plus chilling

This summer favourite is great for easy entertaining. For the best flavour buy a small free-range whole chicken and roast in advance. If you are short on time buy a ready roasted chicken from the hot deli counter at the supermarket. Mix the curry paste, yoghurt, mayonnaise and lime juice in a large bowl and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Ingredients:

Add the sliced chicken and toss gently to coat in the curried sauce. Arrange on a serving platter and cover and chill for 2-3 hours (or overnight).

• 1 tbsp mild curry paste • 150ml carton natural yoghurt

Heat the oil in a frying pan and add the cashew nuts. Fry over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. Leave to cool.

• 6 tbsp mayonnaise • Juice of 1/2 lime • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 500g cold roast chicken, sliced or torn into strips

Just before serving, arrange the mango slices on top of the chicken and scatter over the fried cashew nuts and coriander leaves. Serve with a mixed green salad or as part of a summer buffet.

• For an extra spicy flavour add a finely

Middle-aged Norman runs the Bates Motel along with his domineering mother. Unwitting guest Mary Crane arrives at the motel, on the run having stolen $400,000 from her boss so she can marry her boyfriend and pay off his debts. But Norman’s momma is still running the show, and she’s not too happy about Mary’s arrival. It will, most definitely, all end in tears. Breastfeeding Myths i can’t breastfeed because: • i need medication for depression. Sometimes the benefits of treatment and breastfeeding outweigh potential risks (very low with some antidepressants). • I have flat/ inverted nipples. Breastfeeding is often possible and can even fix this – as can a simple operation. • i’m unsure about breastfeeding; i’m going back to work, anyway. Even if you feed your baby just a few times, they’ll receive colostrum (initial breastmilk full of your antibodies). Started bottlefeedng? Usually you can still breastfeed later, although it’s harder as time passes. You can breastfeed at first, then swap to expressed breastmilk, formula or mixed feeding when you return to work; you have a legal right to express milk at work and ask for a change in your working pattern. • I can’t make enough milk: Despite what many mums are told, it’s extremely rare to be physically incapable of producing enough milk. The process can be hampered after a caesarean, or if you or your baby is poorly. Usually you just need time and correct technique, but if your baby’s suffering or you need to leave them, you can give formula...

Ideally, though, wait 6 weeks to try regular mixed feeding, as the ideal production rate is stimulated by demand and takes time to establish. Townswomen‛s Guild Singers Open Afternoon The Frodsham Townswomen‛s Guild singers recently held an open afternoon at Frodsham Community Centre. Ladies who had never sung before, possibly since school days, were invited to come along and join in the singing at a fun afternoon. The choir was formed in 1977 but due to age and ill health numbers have fallen. With our new enthusiastic conductor and accompanist we have had a successful 12 months entertaining at senior citizens groups in the area. Several ladies attended the afternoon session which ended with tea and cakes. All agreed that they had enjoyed it. The choir meets in the downstairs GP room at the community centre Fluin Lane on Tuesday afternoons at 2.15 – 3.45pm. After a short break for the summer our autumn session will commence on Tuesday 8th September. Anyone interested do contact Anne on 01928 731728. The more the merrier!

Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal 2015 Annual Fundraiser Helsby Golf Club recently held their annual fund raising day “The Wheelchair Classic” for the Powered Wheelchair Appeal with approximately 160 supporters enjoying a fantastic day with the golf competition held in fabulous sunny weather! The golfing honours on the day were as follows – • Ladies competition – Jackie Eve and Ruth Metcalfe • Men’s competition – John Butler and Ryan Edgehill After golf there were various fund raising activities including raffles, auctions and a bottle tombola (The Appeal committee are once again very grateful to members of the golf club and supporters of the Appeal who donated these bottles over the course of the last couple of months!). The main focus of the evening was the presentation of 4 powered wheelchairs to local deserving youngsters and this brings the total number donated by the Appeal to 336 over the last 33 years. For the presentation of the chairs, the Appeal were delighted that football legend Stuart Pearson and the club officials – President Ken Woodward, Captain Colin Ford and Lady Captain Marjorie Trow could join them to do the honours! A fantastic sum of approximately £20,000 was raised on the day and the club and Wheelchair Appeal would like to thank all the local businesses who supported them with donations and prizes. Particular thanks must go to the event main sponsor Jigsaw Law. Of course huge thanks must also go to the golfers including members from Helsby Golf Club and other local clubs and also regular supporters from farther afield in Yorkshire, London, Scotland, the Midlands and Norfolk.
