Hospitality venues welcome easing of restrictions Businesses in the hospitality industry have been among the hardest hit over the past two years with the COVID pandemic. Many hospitality venues in NSW are looking forward to the last lot of restrictions being lifted this Friday. As part of the NSW Government’s staged and flexible approach to managing COVID-19, from last Friday density limits were lifted in hospitality venues and QR check-ins were dumped (and are now only required for nightclubs, music festivals, hospitals, aged and disability facilities). Singing and dancing is permitted again at all venues (except music festivals, where singing and dancing can recommence from this Friday). From this Friday, masks will no longer need to be worn in most places (and are only mandated on public transport, planes, and indoors at airports, hospitals, aged and disability care facilities, corrections facilities and indoor music festivals with more than 1,000 people). Masks will however be continued to be encouraged for indoor settings where you cannot maintain a safe distance from others and for customer facing retail staff to protect vulnerable people who must access these premises and services. Local clubs, pubs, restaurants and cafes are cheering they can get back to “normal”. Cobar Bowling & Golf Club secretary/ manager Luke Anderson said having their density limit dropped to just 80 people during the pandemic had been very hard to work with. “When you have to turn away members, it goes against the nature of hospitality,” Luke said. He said with the easing of restrictions they can now bring entertainment back to the club.

“Even though some music has been allowed, I could never justify having it when members could not sing or dance. “That would be like giving a kid a lolly and telling them they’re not allowed to eat it,” Luke said. Cobar Services Club secretary/manager Linda Carter said they will also be able to start booking in entertainment and their Cook-Off and Anzac Day events will be able to go ahead

There’s no need for golfers to shout over the table to each other anymore as they now don’t need to social distance from each other with density limits lifted in all hospitality venues. From this Friday, masks will also no longer be required to be worn.

unhampered this year. “It’s also been an extra burden and cost to our business to have someone on the door to check vaccinations, QR codes, masks etc.,” Linda said. Both managers said they have noticed that some of their older “at risk” members have been restricting their visits, and they hope that all members will feel confident once again in returning to their venues.

Stephen said it was a great three days where he and Joey and Todd learnt a lot and made important connections with other youth and youth mentors/officers from all over the state. ▪ Photo contributed

Local children are being warned about ‘Stranger Danger’ following an incident that occurred near the Cobar Public School (CPS) last week. CPS relieving principal Silvana Lennon made a report to police on Thursday afternoon after students had advised that “a male appeared to be filming members of our school community after they made their way home”. “It is not yet known who the individual is or exactly what occurred, however in the interest of keeping students safe we have acted on this information and notified the police,” Mrs Lennon told the school community. Cobar Police Senior Constable Lucas Hardy said police are continuing their enquiries into the exact nature of the incident. “Police have spoken with students and a witness and are trying to locate the male involved,” Senior Constable Hardy said. Mrs Lennon said the incident was a timely reminder for parents and carers to speak with children about stranger danger and to be aware of their surroundings. She recommended the following: identify ‘safe places’ on the way home (a friend’s house, a community space, police station, high school etc); ensure children know where to go if they don’t feel safe (show them these places in real life, not just on a map); teach kids about stranger danger (not to speak to people they don’t know, or get in cars of people they don’t know); carry a contact number for a parent/carer (this can be used if they are in trouble and need to phone you, children may forget a phone number if relying on memory); do not take another route, or go anywhere without telling an adult; walk/ride in groups where possible; and always tell someone if something isn’t right.

Police and emergency services kept busy over weekend Cobar Police and emergency services were kept busy over the weekend responding to two serious incidents. A 20 year old Cobar man was arrested and charged with two offences by police at 11.30am on Saturday. It’s alleged the man previously attempted to break into the Great Western Hotel at 3.20am at which time he had an altercation with some witnesses in the vicinity. It’s believed the man then returned to the hotel at approximately 6am where he threw two Molotov cocktails (fire bombs) into the accommodation rooms at the back of the hotel. Witnesses to the incident put out the fires and police were called to conduct an investigation. The man was later located by police and taken into custody. He was charged with attempted break and enter and malicious damage by fire and was bail refused by police. In a separate incident on Saturday, emergency services were called to a house fire on the Barrier Highway east of Cobar at approximately 4.30pm. The house, which was unoccupied and used for storage only, was totally destroyed in the blaze. Police, NSW Ambulance, Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire and Rescue NSW personnel attended the fire. It’s believed the fire was not suspicious.

With the recent wrap up of the Regional Health Inquiry, State Member for Barwon, Roy Butler is keen to see what recommendations will come from it “and whether they will be acted on with any thoroughness and conviction”. Mr Butler said the long-awaited inquiry into health and medical services, and access to those services, in regional areas finally closed on February 2. “Established in September 2020, the inquiry has heard evidence about some of the major problems with supplying a decent standard of care to patients in country NSW. “There were some harrowing tales of people with conditions that could have been easily treated, who instead died due to a lack of access to doctors, specialised medical equipment, medication or transport to take them elsewhere for treatment,” Mr Butler said. The committee’s report is scheduled to be tabled at the end of April, 2022 but Mr Butler said it remains to be seen what their recommendations will be. “Regional NSW has had to suffer substandard health care for a long time, despite the occasional noise made to bring about change. “This time we need to keep the momentum going and hold the government to its promises to fix a system that has been broken for too long. “I have already posed a question in parliament to Health Minister Brad Hazzard, about regional health services and he has offered to meet with me to discuss the issue. “This should never be allowed to become a political football,” Mr Butler said.

Connecting homeschoolers

Families who participate in a homeschooled education met up at Drummond Park on Friday afternoon. Sarah Theakston, who helped organise the event, said it was a great opportunity to meet other homeschooling families and to build on those connections. Pictured are adults Alesha Jebb, Kathryn Grofos, Sarah Theakston, Kayla Crawford, Rachel Hibbert, Shey Ellison, Stephanie Engelbrecht and their children.

Compare child care services and fees Australian families can compare childcare services and their fees following the Federal Government’s launch of a new website. Families can visit StartingBlocks.gov.au to find local childcare services, view vacancies, compare costs, and check official quality ratings, including safety. Acting Minister for Education and Youth, Stuart Robert, said the website gives parents a new central place to make important choices about their children’s early education and care needs. He said families will also be able to see the significant savings they’ll make when the

higher Child Care Subsidy comes into effect next month. Mr Roberts said one of the main features of the website is a simple-to-use calculator where families can plug in their details and get an estimate of their out-of-pocket costs. Member for Parkes Mark Coulton encouraged all families to visit the website and said it will have a special appeal to the 250,000 families with more than one child aged under six who will get a higher subsidy soon. On average, families will be better off $2,260 per year, with families with three children in care saving up to $370 a week on out-of-pocket costs.

Last opportunity to join Carbon Pilot Former Carbon Cocky of the Year, Peter Yench is encouraging local farmers to learn more about how Carbon Farming can benefit them and to consider applying for round two of the Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot. Mr Yench said Carbon Farming has greatly benefited his property (and made him a wealthy man) and is something that would be of benefit to many other landholders across the shire. Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud also encourages local landholders to apply for the Carbon Farming pilot which aims to create new income streams for farmers who improve biodiversity on their land by establishing new plantings. “This pilot is a game changer for our farmers by allowing them to create new income from plantings that deliver biodiversity improvements and carbon abatement,” Minister Littleproud said. “I encourage farmers from eligible regions to apply. Farmers can gain multiple environmental benefits and diversify their income with a Carbon + Biodiversity project. Farmers can plan projects and submit their applications through the new National Stewardship Trading Platform. This platform makes it easier for all farmers to plan their projects and sell biodiversity and carbon outcomes to the private market. Farmers could also accept a government offer for the biodiversity and sell carbon to the private market. “The platform connects farmers with buyers, aiming to kickstart investment in on farm carbon and biodiversity outcomes. The pilot is testing protocols for a market mechanism to buy and sell biodiversity services and create a new income for farmers. This is part of the plan to set up a voluntary biodiversity stewardship market underpinned by legislation. “Interested farmers can contact their local natural resource management organisation to receive support for the application process and establishing a project.” Further information, including frequently asked questions, is available at: https:// www.awe.gov.au/agriculture-land/farm-fooddrought/natural-resources/landcare/sustainingfuture-australian-farming/carbon-biodiversitypilot

Trudy’s in training for next month’s Tour de OROC Full-time business owner and part-time charity bike rider with a heart of gold, Trudy Griffiths will be taking part in the Tour de OROC charity ride next month. The Tour de OROC (Orana Region Outback Challenge) is a 1,400km bike ride over six days that raises funds for Dubbo’s Macquarie Homestay accommodation. “Being a business owner you try to support and put money back into the community where you can to different organisations. “This is for a great cause and I’ll also get some personal satisfaction out of it too,” Trudy told The Cobar Weekly. Trudy decided to take up the challenge as she’s known a number of Cobar residents who have needed to use the accommodation facility when visiting Dubbo for medical services. She’ll be one of two women in the group of 25 riders who have signed on for this year’s event and also one of two riders in the pack with Cobar connections. (Former Cobar resident, Chris Freeman, who now lives in Mudgee, is also riding.) Trudy will only be attempting the second half of the ride (as she’s not able to commit to the full six days due to a previous commitment clashing with the start date of the ride). She plans to join the peloton in Bourke on Day 4 and ride to Cobar, then on Day 5 they ride from Cobar to Warren and on the final day the ride will finish in Dubbo, which is still a hefty distance of 600km that Trudy will cover. It’s not, however, the first time Trudy has been involved in a challenge of this kind. “A group of us from Cobar in 2016 did the Wines to Mines ride where we rode from Griffith to Cobar. “On the last day I remember it was about 40 degrees and there was a 30km/h head wind, it was terrible,” Trudy recalled. She said while the Tour de OROC daily rides will be about the same distance (130-160km), she hopes they will have much better weather on next month’s ride. With running her business and spending time with the family, Trudy said training for the event has been challenging as it requires a lot of time out on the bike. To fit it all in, she’s been getting up early and

Forecast is for a wet week ahead Cobar residents woke up to a dark and stormy morning yesterday with 49.8mm of rain recorded at Cobar Airport by the Bureau of Meteorology up to 10am . The Bureau is predicting more rain for today with a 50 per cent chance of showers and a possible storm with 29 degrees the expected top temperature. Tomorrow should be a mostly sunny morning with a top daytime temperature of 32 degrees and a slight chance of afternoon showers. Friday is expected to be 33 and cloudy with a slight chance of rain and a thunderstorm. A top of 32 degrees is forecast for both Saturday and Sunday with a medium chance of showers. Monday is expected to reach 29 degrees with a 60 per cent chance of up to 10mm of rain and a thunderstorm. This comes after a warm and dry week when temperatures varied from 35.9 degrees last Thursday up to 37.9 on Sunday, which was our hottest day of the week. Monday’s top temperature was 35.5 degrees.

heading out on the bike doing 30km rides, that take about an hour and a half, all before 9am. And while the early morning views are pretty impressive, Trudy said she is however getting sick of her playlist. “Ideally it would be great to have some company on my rides. “I’m trying to con some people into riding with me but I’m not sure if they’ll be up to

doing those long distances,” Trudy said. As part of her training, she’s also going to be doing some 100km rides over the weekends. Taking an opportunity has really paid off for Bethany A career change opportunity that presented itself to Bethany Smith just over 12 months ago has recently helped her to land a new, exciting role. Starting out as an administration trainee with Cobar Shire Council in January 2021, which gave her on-the-job training and involved studying a Certificate III in Business Administration, Bethany has recently joined council’s projects team as a Support Officer. “It’s a busy department, there’s so many projects currently underway,” Bethany told The Cobar Weekly. The team is currently working on upgrades to the Cobar Memorial Swimming Pool, Ward Oval, the Cobar Youth & Fitness Centre and the next stage of work for The Great Cobar Museum. “Thinking back to school it’s definitely not where I thought my life would be, but I’m so glad it has turned out this way,” Bethany said. Prior to working with council, Bethany started out working in childcare but wasn’t totally convinced that was what she wanted to do as a career. When she saw council’s administration traineeship advertised, Bethany said she thought it could be a good opportunity to try something different and at the same time gain a qualification. “Friends that did their business certificate said you’re silly not to, if you want a job in admin or any office, that’s the best place to start.” The traineeship not only would offer her onthe-job training, she would also have the security of it being a full-time role. Bethany said she weighed it up against studying at university, which she said would have been a 3-4 year commitment “and one that could cost an arm and a leg”. “I thought what a great opportunity, it’s only

12 months. “I can get a qualification and if I don’t like it then I can try something different”. Bethany said she found the friendly team culture at council an added bonus. “I started when I was 19 and very young but they were super welcoming and seemed to enjoy seeing a younger face around,” she said. Bethany said being able to apply her on-thejob training experience to help her complete her TAFE learning assessments meant the whole experience was easier than she’d expected. “If I hadn’t been doing the traineeship and was just studying at home, I think I would have struggled a bit.” Bethany said she didn’t find it too hard to fit in her study commitments around work, sport and her social life.

“I didn’t have to commit to too much - it was 2-3 hours a week (outside of work hours) for the online learning through TAFE, which I think is really reasonable.” With Bethany now working in the projects department, and seeing the success story she has become, council is now looking for their next Administration Trainee. Bethany encourages anyone thinking about applying for the role to take the leap like she did. “While traineeship wages may offer less than other fulltime roles, it’s only for 12 months and once you’re through that you’re earning a really good wage. “I can definitely see myself working with council for the long term,” Bethany said.— Article compiled by Holly McGuinness, Macleay

New copper find Yabbies reunion goes full steam ahead at Canbelego Recent drilling by Helix Resources has identified numerous intercepts with visible copper sulphide at their Canbelego Joint Venture Project located near Cobar. Helix Managing Director Mike Rosenstreich said with their Canbelego joint venture partner, Aeris Resources, they are very encouraged by the increased potential they continue to unearth around Canbelego as they methodically work through the historic data in combination with the new results and interpretations. “We are gaining momentum with positive exploration results, and we believe this area holds tremendous potential to make more copper discoveries,” Mr Rosenstreich said. He said they plan to focus now on the Western tenement block for the next three to six months to carry out further diamond drilling, surface and down-hole Electromagnetic (EM) work and additional regional target testing.

Snakes warning There’s been a number of snake sightings with reports of snakes seen in Acacia Drive, Woodiwiss Avenue and Longworth Street over the past two weeks. St John Ambulance NSW CEO Sarah Lance, said time is critical when it comes to venomous bites, and they should be treated as a medical emergency. “That is why we are asking people to brush up on the signs, symptoms and – most importantly – the treatment of snake and spider bites,” Ms Lance said. Did We Say Yes? has answered their own question early in the competition with the team scoring a comprehensive win in Round 2 last Tuesday night. Why Did We Say Yes? (WDWSY) shot consistently throughout the game which saw them finish as easy 27-12 winners over KML. Troy Hill was the standout player for WDWSY having a big game in Centre. KML’s young gun players, Elleise Woodbridge and Mia McLeod, both had great games in the shooting circle for KML but they had a hard time getting any rebounds with WDWSY’s defender Emily Campbell cleaning up any balls she could get her hands on. In the other match Fast Fobs made their first appearance on the court after having a bye in the first round. They came up against a red hot Watch & Learn team who were too strong and Watch & Learn finished with a big 41-26 win. Zach Finn, didn’t appear to be hindered by a recent shoulder injury, and shot very well to help Watch & Learn notch up their big score. Finn was well supported in the circle by Sally O’Brien, Alex Brown and Rhys Lloyd. A highlight of the match was Lloyd scoring the season’s first three point shot aided by an assist from O’Brien. Fobs’ Sandie Mitchell and Travis Schintler both had good all round games and the team had a great power play quarter scoring 14 points, but Watch & Learn ultimately finished as the victors. Next Tuesday night Rounds 4 and 5 have been combined into a double-header night with Watch & Learn taking on KML in the early game and then they back up to play CynSteel in the late match. Cynsteel meet Fast Fobs in their early game and Fast Fobs come up against Why Did We Say Yes? in the late game.

Three high scoring games in touch Three high scoring games and a drawn match were played out in the Touch Football Competition last Thursday at Ward Oval. In the Seniors games, Bwoins finished as big winners over Blue Berries and Yellow Bellies also had an easy win in their match up against the Termites. Blue Berries relinquished a 4-3 half time lead in their match and the Bwoins took control of the second half to finish with a comprehensive 11-6 win. Kai Taylor led the try scoring for Bwoins with six touchdowns, Tim Eves added three tries and both Damon Bruce and Clay McDonald contributed a try each. Oisin McMullen (5) and Jamal Eves (1) accounted for Blue Berries points. Yellow Bellies finished well out in front with a 11-2 win over Termites with Jaxon Burke the leading try scorer with six tries while Bridgette Negfeldt, Riley Bottom, Jayden Cryer and Nicholas Hodges added a try each to the tally.

Mitchell Allen and Axel Fairfull, with a try each, accounted for the Termites points. In the Juniors games, the Blue Smurfs ran in 10 tries to Orange Ranga’s six. With five of Smurfs tries recorded by Harper Martin (3) and Addison Cull (2), and with female tries worth double points, that helped the Blue team to a comprehensive 15-6 win. Rowdy Barton (2), Tommy George (1), Hugo Josephson (1) and Darcy Sylvester (1) were Smurfs other try scorers to help seal their win. Try scorers for Rangas were: George McDonald (3), Skyla Fairfull (1) and Aiden Hyland (1). The other Juniors match between The Big Pineapples and the Rockets resulted in 4-all draw. Try scorers for the Yellow and Red clash were: The Big Pineapples—Logan Fennamore (1), Dusty McDonald (1), Cohan Nicholson (1) and Jaxon Waugh (1); and Rockets—Lachlan Brookman (1), Rhylee Jeffery (1) and Eligh Ritter (1).

Only two golfers turned up on Wednesday for the men’s golf mid-week round and so no match was played. It was not much better on Saturday but at least with five players there was enough to have a competitive round. Jason Hampel was the best of the bunch with a good score of 36 points, nudging out Scott Mayne with 33 points. Hampel also managed to win the Nearest the Pin prize on the difficult 11th hole. Peter Lawrence won the only other prize on the 7th hole. There were seven players on Sunday and once again Jason Hampel finished as the winner but this time he only scored 32 points. Greg Clark returned to the winning circle with 30 points for second place and Max Phillips came third with 28 points. Phillips also won a Nearest the Pin prize on the easy 3rd hole while Ray Yench picked up one on the 7th. In other golf news for the week, there was a great showing of former club captain, Peter ‘China’ Brien and his mate from Gilgandra, Graeme ‘Mouse’ Holland, at a tournament in Melbourne during the week. Holland finished second and Brien was third at Kingston Heath Golf Club last Tuesday. The following day at the Victorian Golf Club, China came in third again. In one week these two golfers with their consistent play, have put Cobar and Gilgandra on the golfing map.—Out of Bounds

The Age Champions from the day were: Juniors—Ashlee Compton and Billy Watt; 11 Years—Ella Oborn and Riley Bruce; Seniors—Piper Allen and Rowdy Barton. A squad of 19 swimmers will now participate in the Nyngbar Carnival which Cobar will host early next month.

Teams square off Empire and Nymagee will square off once again in the 40 Over Cricket Competition grand final this Saturday at Ward Oval (weather permitting). Defending champions, Empire, are red hot favourites heading into the grand final. Led by all-rounder Tristan Everett, it’s difficult to find a weakness in the young enthusiastic Empire side. Their batting and bowling are very strong and features multiple representative players. They have a star-studded line-up and they will look to Everett, David Watson, Jay Egan and Jed Noonan to make big impacts. Nymagee will have their work cut out for them if they want to de-throne the champions. The only statistic that Nymagee are far superior to Empire is their average age. Nymagee has the team to challenge Empire and, with a bit a luck, they could cause an upset on the day. Rain is forecast throughout this week which may affect the pitch preparations, so winning the toss may be doubly important.—contributed

Two time winner The Cobar Junior Rugby League team of Henry Knight, Jaxon Burke and Tommy Bryan won the team challenge at Sunday’s triathlon event to collect $250 prize money donated by Chris Deighton from Copper City Tyres. ▪ Photo contributed

Big field for first CATS club challenge A big field of 41 competitors turned out for the CATS (Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s) monthly triathlon event on Sunday, which is the biggest group they’ve ever had in the club’s history. The numbers were bolstered with the introduction this month of the Copper City Tyre Service Team Challenge which offered $250 prize money for the winning club which finished closest to their nominated time. Nine teams representing five local clubs, Senior Roosters, Junior Rugby League, Junior Soccer, the Camels and the CATS, entered. The Junior League #2 side finished as the winners after completing the short course (300m swim, 10km ride, 2km run) within 21 seconds of their nominated time. Second was the Senior Roosters #1 team

(2min 33sec) and third was Team Incompetent (representing Junior League) with 2.53 off their time. There were also two new teams competing for the first time over the Try-A-Tri course of 200m swim, 5km ride and 2km run. Axel Fairfull was the handicap winner with Clair Cousins second and Clayton Lewis third. A number of personal best performances were recorded by individuals on the Short Course with Axel setting a new time in his swim leg and overall time; Isaac Theakston improved on his swim time; Laura Andrew bettered her ride, run and overall time; and Clair Cousins had ride and run PBs. Competing in a team in the Long Course (500m swim, 20km ride and 4km run), Chris Powell improved his swim time.

There was a field of 21 competitors at the Golfie on Sunday for another fun social bowls day. David Schofield was a two time winner on the day, skippering the winning team and claiming the ‘George The Giraffe’ award for twice going into the side ditch. (Worse still, his bowl was on a correct bias!) Schofield, Brandon Hodge and Marlene Wynd finished with a +14 victory over Shane ‘Jimmy’ Carter, John Goonrey and Scott Mayne. The runners-up were the team of Helen Boddy and Dean ‘Bogger’ McLeod with a +12 win over Boddy (playing double lead) and Shine McIver. In the other games, Kyle Roberts, Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and Margaret Good (who was welcomed back to the greens and didn’t seem to have lost any form in her three year absence) had +8 win over Tom O., Don Roberts and Peter ‘China’ Brien. Barry Bargwanna, John ‘Shark’ Daly and Karen Daly had a +4 win over Alan Knight, Peter ‘Skeet’ Goonrey and Glenn ‘Kiwi’ Ratcliffe. It was voted at the AGM to amalgamate the women’s and men’s competitions in moving with the times and ensuring everyone has opportunities to play competitive bowls.— The Second

Noonan leads Toothless to a thrilling win

After being the dominant team all season, Toothless went into Friday night’s Twenty20 cricket grand final as the favourites. They started the match on the right foot and had Bushies in trouble early at 4/6, but when it came their turn to bat, their big hitters failed them until a Man of the Match performance by Jed Noonan with 41 not out, resurrected their innings and Toothless went on to claim the win.

A Man of the Match performance by Jed Noonan led his Ruthless Toothless team to a thrilling two wicket victory over Bushies in the Twenty20 cricket grand final on Friday night. Noonan ended the match with bowling figures of 4/4 off three overs and he hit 41 runs off 34 balls including 4 sixers and remained not out. Bushies won the toss and elected to bat first. Their innings started in disastrous fashion as Noonan knocked over Bushies’ top four batsmen, with Tom McKenna dismissed for 0, Alec Fraser (2), Jade Buckman (0) and Stephen Nicholson (2). With the score at 4/6, Tadgh Waugh and Mark Fraser came together at the crease and were starting to steady the innings before Waugh had to retire on 12 not out after being hit in the head. Fraser was then joined by Adam Hill at the crease. When Fraser was dismissed for 20 runs and Hill went for 17, Bushies had taken their score along to 6/62 but then they lost their last four wickets for just five runs to be all out for 67 runs in the 16th over. Chasing only 68 runs for victory, it should have been an easy assignment for Toothless, but maybe they were a little complacent and took it too easy. Toothless made a decent start losing Tim Hillam (11) with score on 13 but then ran into trouble when they lost their next seven wickets for 27 runs. Ben Griffiths (1), Matt Shephard (2), Tristen Everett (0), David Watson (2), Ryan Urquhart (3), Paddy Harris (1) and Chris Deighton (0) were all dismissed cheaply. Needing a further 28 runs for victory and with two wickets in hand, Jed Noonan (41 not out) and Marty Turton (2 no) held their nerve to get Toothless home to a victory in the 15th over.—contributed
