Najin Original Artwork by Award Winning Wildlife Artist Karen Laurence-Rowe What Najin represents as one of the last of her kind has been perfectly captured in this stunning oil on canvas by internationally renowned wildlife artist, Karen Laurence-Rowe. Mother and daughter, Fatu are the last two northern white rhino, the last of a species that only science can now save. "Whenever I am in the presence of Najin and Fatu - or looking at their images, which I have done now hundreds of thousands of times during the painting process - I am acutely aware of the potential finiteness of it all.Of all the endangered species I have painted, these two are the ones that most profoundly stir the fear of loss in me - can science save them? Call me foolish - but I’ll put a hand on their tough hides and pray that it can. After Sudan, the last known male, died, Karen was determined the conservation in crisis messages that reverberated around the world would not fade with his passing and immediately set about preserving on canvas a lasting tribute to the last two female northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu.

As the youngest of the two surviving northern white rhino, the fate facing Fatu is that she will one day be the last of her species. To capture the significance of this unwanted future Karen revisited a technique that she had experimented with nearly two decades ago in the hope that the method would allow the portraits to take on a ‘museum’ quality - a status that a near extinct species deserves! "Throughout the process of the paintings Karen wanted the rhinos to look archaic, precious, irreplaceable. No background clutter, no frills - just pure essence of rhino! I endeavoured to evoke the feeling in the viewer that they were looking at a creature from bygone years, now extinct - and leave them wondering at how a creature so marvellous could ever have existed!”

Sudan the Monument by Rungwe In the impending tragedy of Sudan’s death in March 2018 we wanted to record with the best means possible the actuality of what the extinction of the northern white rhino means with a powerful but poignant three dimensional image. The first time humans realised they could exterminate an entire species was the Dodo, now 360 years later we are facing extinctions on an enormous scale and we felt that Sudan could become a totemic symbol, at least as potent as the iconic images of the Dodo, but one for our own age. To this end we recorded Sudan with photogrammetry and white light scanning and from these digital records 3D printed and sculpted first this metre long Maquette and then a fully life size sculpture. It is intended to be a monument to Sudan and his species; a plea for all the other species we are having such an immense impact on and to try and convey something of what it feels like to be in the presence of such a magnificent animal.

On one side Sudan lies on the ground his huge head heavy with advanced years and the weight of his iconic relict status, on the other he tilts his head slightly and raises a foreleg, a symbol of hope for the moment an embryo created with his sperm is born struggles up and rescues his species from total extinction.
