At the end of each milking it is essential to implement a correct cleaning procedure (cleaningsanitising - descaling) of the milking plant in order to:

PRE-MILKING UDDER HYGIENE
Pre-dipping (cleaning+hygienisation before milking) aims to remove dirt and bacteria from teats before milking.
It is the best way to reduce the occurrence of environmental mastitis and help control bacterial load.
There are several methods of application:
1. Dipping with non-foaming sanitiser
2. Spraying using a spray pump/machine
3. Foaming dipping with active foam sanitizer
Performing pre-dipping in the milking routine also improves milk ejection. In fact, oxytocin, a hormone whose release is possible through suckling by the calf or correct and gentle stimulation for milking, is required to allow milk to flow from the alveoli to the cistern of the quarter.
Poor teat preparation allows the collection of cisternal milk (25%) but not alveolar milk (75%). After pre-dipping, this should be removed from the teat, with paper or disposable towels, prior to cluster attachment.
It is advisable to continue with this routine throughout the year, trying to alternate the active ingredient at least twice a year (summer-winter / spring-autumn).

‘Post-dipping is the best tool to control mastitis.’ (Nickerson, Boddie,97)
Udder hygiene after milking (post-dipping) is essential to prevent mastitis of environmental origin. The teat sphincter after milking remains open for about half an hour and easily becomes an entry route for bacterial contamination. Whether dipped (Dip-cup) or sprayed (Spray System), postdipping sanitisers should be applied as soon as possible after cluster removal.
Immersion or spray?
In general, during the procedure it is essential to sanitise at least 3/4 of the nipple surface and not just the tip. Excellent results are obtained by direct immersion of the nipple in the ‘filming’ germicide, which protects the epidermis for a longer period.
The film created on the nipple acts as a real ‘barrier’ to the outside, minimising contact with any pathogens.
Spraying, however, can be advantageous from the point of view of maximising working time, as the procedure is very quick and easy to apply with the spray machines. Furthermore, with the spray system, direct contact with teat skin is avoided, reducing the risk of cross-contamination between one animal and another. In any case, it is advisable to alternate the sanitising active ingredient at least twice a year in order to avoid bacterial resistance.

Breeding environments must be regularly washed and disinfected:
• by scheduling the rotation of departments in such a way as to ensure at least once every 8 weeks a biological vacuum period (all full - all empty);
• alternatively carrying out regular disinfection of the facilities and ambient air even in the presence of the animals.
Environmental Hygiene Disinfection
To carry out disinfection with a sanitary vacuum correctly, the following steps must be followed:
• wash floors and walls, equipment with pressurised water;
• after removing most of the dirt, replace the lance with a lance suitable for use with detergents and disinfectants (foaming agents). The dense foam deposited on equipment, walls and floors emulsifies the dirt and dissolves it;
• after 15-20 minutes, the foam collapses and can be rinsed off with a pressurised water jet, removing the soapy, emulsified dirt;
• after cleaning, disinfection can be carried out by alternating products with different active ingredients. It is necessary to remember that the disinfectant only carries out its action on the microbial populations present in the absence of organic matter;
• let the barn dry and if possible keep it empty for a week. These operations must be repeated each time a barn is emptied.
Disinfection in the presence of animals
This is carried out by spraying. The treatment of the air, using aqueous solutions with disinfectant action, consists of micronising the water solution with added disinfectant by means of special aerosolising equipment that is capable of guaranteeing a particle size varying between 0.5 and 5 microns in diameter.
A proper aerosol consists of very fine droplets of disinfectant solution that can diffuse freely in the environment as a simple gas would. Aerosol should not be confused with nebulisation, which instead consists of the production of particles larger than 30 microns in diameter. The particles generated by nebulisation are of higher weight and therefore remain in suspension in the environment for a very short time (several minutes) and have a wetting action.
