One Team. One Journey.

H & P COMMITS TO SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN 2025 ACTIVELY C.A.R.E.® GOALS

As we approach 2025, H&P is setting their annual targets to enhance safety and environmental performance across its operations. The company’s 2025 Actively C.A.R.E. Goals reflect a commitment to continuous improvement and responsible business practices in the oil and gas industry.

Reducing SIF Events

H&P’s primary safety goal for 2025 is to achieve a 5% reduction in non-mitigated Serious Injury or Fatality (SIF) events involving LifeBelt breakdowns, with a stretch goal of 10%. This target underscores the company’s dedication to protecting its workforce and creating a safer work environment.

To achieve this, H&P has outlined three key results:

1. Create a DROPS culture for minimizing exposure on the rig floor and improving redzone management.

2. Further empower leaders to lead work in a manner that effectively controls and removes SIF exposures.

3. Remove the obstacles to LifeBelt adherence.

Looking ahead, H&P has set a long-term goal of proactively managing third-party exposures related to people, equipment and processes. This approach aims to ensure safety for all personnel involved in H&P’s operations.

Maintaining GHG Emissions

On the environmental front, H&P seeks to maintain its normalized greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions achieved in fiscal year 2024.

Four key results have been established to support this objective:

1. Increase the number of rigs working under H&P’s excess engine usage target.

2. Incorporate international operations footage drilled data into H&P’s GHG emissions calculations.

3. Evaluate opportunities for reducing emissions in start-up drilling operations and provide recommendations for improvement.

4. Review and update opportunities and risks for the 2030 emissions reduction target to identify areas for additional reduction of GHG emissions.

These goals reflect H&P’s commitment to balancing operational excellence with environmental stewardship and employee safety. As the company moves forward, these Actively C.A.R.E. Goals will serve as a roadmap for sustainable growth and responsible operations in the challenging world of oil and gas drilling.

TECHNOLOGY SUPERINTENDENTS BRIDGE THE GAP FOR INNOVATIVE DRILLING

Despite the industry’s declining rig count, technological advancements continue to drive production increases. To keep up with this trend and ensure that our customers receive the best support, H&P has made changes to ensure we stay ahead. One such change was the integration of the digital operations group into field operations. As part of this change, the role of the technology superintendent was established.

How do technology superintendents drive innovation in drilling operations? In a nutshell, they play a crucial role in technology adoption and performance at the rig. By collaborating with stakeholders, providing effective training and troubleshooting challenges, they help enhance operational efficiency.

Leveraging their operational backgrounds and data, the technology superintendents work closely with customers and rig operations counterparts before deployment of technology applications. They ensure the rigs are adequately prepared by facilitating knowledge sharing and training. Even after deployment, technology superintendents continue to collaborate with rig operation counterparts to deliver consistent performance and efficiency of the technology applications.

Maintaining a close working relationship with regional directors and drilling superintendents, they are involved from the sales pitch to contracts, delivery and performance. To ensure continuous improvement, technology superintendents make routine visits to customers, rig crews and third-party vendors for training purposes and to identify opportunities for enhancement. They stay involved in the development process to help drive development and improvement in the products.

East Region Technology Superintendent Anthony Ruch stated, “A big portion of our position is making sure we are delivering value and meeting customer needs when it comes to technology.”

In the field, they collaborate closely with the Remote Operations Center (ROC) for immediate support. As a multi-faceted support system, the technology superintendents, field technicians and the drilling performance ROC work together daily.

“Our goal is the same: train drillers, troubleshoot technologies and make improvements that help our FlexRig® fleet performance,” said Chris Curtis, drilling performance manager at the ROC.

Technology superintendents play a pivotal role in the modern drilling landscape, serving as catalysts for innovation, efficiency and customer success on rig sites. By fostering collaboration among diverse teams, providing crucial training, offering expert troubleshooting and championing continuous improvement, these professionals significantly boost operational performance. Their expertise not only streamlines day-to-day operations but also ensures the successful implementation and optimization of H&P’s cutting-edge technology products.

As the industry continues to evolve, technology superintendents stand at the forefront, bridging the gap between traditional drilling practices and advanced technological solutions, ultimately driving the future of energy exploration and production.

A CENTURY OF SEIZING OPPORTUNITIES

How Acquisitions Shaped H&P’s Ascent

Over the past several decades, H&P has leveraged strategic acquisitions to drive innovation, expand its service offerings and solidify its position as an industry leader. From niche product lines to transformative mergers, the company has consistently seized new opportunities to fuel its growth.

A Timely Acquisition

H&P made an important acquisition in the 1960s with the purchase of Natural Gas Odorizing, Inc. (NGO). As natural gas pipelines proliferated, the need for effective odorants to detect leaks became critical. NGO manufactured these vital “odorants,” which allowed operators to more easily identify pipeline breaks. The acquisition proved prescient, as odorant sales grew exponentially, outpacing all competitors combined. In 1996, H&P divested NGO for $48 million — a significant return on its $1.5 million initial investment.

Diversifying Service Offerings

As the 20th century drew to a close, H&P continued to broaden its capabilities through M&A. In 1994, the company expanded its land-based operations with the acquisition of Ensco. Two years later, it moved offshore, leveraging Ensco’s deep-water expertise in the Gulf of Mexico. This not only diversified H&P’s service mix, but also provided an entry point into the highly mobile rig configurations that would become increasingly important.

As the company enters its second century, this innovative spirit — combined with a proven track record of smart acquisitions — positions H&P to continue safely providing performance-driven drilling solutions. Spindletopinmotionwithleadingtug

Investing in Digital Transformation

More recently, H&P has placed an emphasis on digital technologies, doubling down on solutions to automate workflows and enhance operational efficiencies. In 2017, the company acquired MOTIVE Drilling Technologies and Magnetic Variation Services (MagVAR) to bolster its directional drilling capabilities. This was followed by the additions of Angus Jamieson Consulting (AJC) and DrillScan in 2018 and 2019, expanding H&P’s software and engineering expertise.

A New Journey with KCA Deutag

H&P’s most recent move solidifies H&P’s global ambitions. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to acquire KCA Deutag, an international oil and gas services firm with 11,000 employees across more than 26 countries. This transformative merger will significantly expand H&P’s international footprint and diversify its service offerings on a global scale.

H&P’s Commitment to Innovative Spirit

Throughout its more than 100-year history, H&P has consistently demonstrated a knack for anticipating industry trends and capitalizing on new opportunities. Whether it’s product lines or transformative mergers, H&P’s willingness to pursue bold acquisitions has been a hallmark of its success.

But H&P’s M&A gameplan has been about more than just growth — it has also fueled the company’s culture of Innovative Spirit. By bringing in new technologies, capabilities and talent, each acquisition has strengthened H&P’s ability to provide differentiated solutions and outcomes to its customers. From the early days of natural gas odorization to today’s digital oilfield, H&P continues to improve lives through efficient and responsible energy.

My H&P Journey: CHRIS HUGHES

Chris Hughes’ journey with H&P exemplifies how the company is revolutionizing the long-established practice of directional drilling, bringing cutting-edge technology and remote operations to an art that has been part of the oil and gas industry for decades. With a background in mechanical engineering, and a decade of experience in the oil and gas industry Hughes found his way to H&P through an unexpected turn of events.

From Field to Future

His initial decade in the industry was spent in oilfield services, where he honed his skills and embraced the unpredictable nature of fieldwork.

“Those years were a crucible of learning,” Hughes reflected. “Two years as an MWD (measurement while drilling) specialist, followed by eight years in directional drilling — each day brought new challenges, new wells, new puzzles to solve.”

Embracing Change

The industry slowdown in 2016-17 proved to be a pivotal moment in Hughes’ career. It was a time of uncertainty, but also opportunity.

“In our industry, change is the only constant,” he added. “The slowdown was a wake-up call, a reminder that we must always be ready to adapt, to evolve.”

Soon opportunity knocked.

“A headhunter reached out about an opportunity with MOTIVE Drilling Technologies, H&P acquired the company in 2017,” he recalled.

His decision to join H&P was driven by a keen understanding of the industry’s direction.

“H&P’s acquisition of MOTIVE wasn’t just a business move; it was a vision of the future,” he explained. “With H&P’s extensive rig fleet, I saw the potential for change.”

Chris Hughes, Supervisor, Remote Directional Drilling

Pioneering from the ROC

As the remote directional drilling supervisor, Hughes now stands at the forefront of drilling automation. His role in the Remote Operations Center (ROC) is a far cry from his days on the rig, but no less crucial.

“The transition to remote operations is perhaps the most significant shift I’ve witnessed in my career,” Hughes stated. “We’re not just drilling wells; we’re redefining how we can drill wells.”

Hughes’ enthusiasm for the technological advancements is evident.

“The Bit Guidance System and AutoSlide® technology — these aren’t just improvements. They’re changing drilling efficiency and precision,” he asserted.

The shift to remote operations has brought unexpected benefits.

“The consistency of our schedule in the ROC is a game-changer,” he explained.

Nurturing Talent and Technology

In his supervisory role, Hughes has found a new calling in mentoring the next generation of drilling professionals.

“Our team in the ROC is a blend of experienced directional drillers and bright young talents from across H&P,” he said. “It’s a melting pot of expertise, where field-honed instincts meet cutting-edge technology. My role is to foster this teamwork, to ensure that we’re always pushing the boundaries of what our FlexRig® fleet can do.”

His day-to-day responsibilities are a balance of oversight and empowerment.

“Each morning, I survey the landscape of our operations,” he described. “I assess workloads, identify potential challenges and ensure that our pod operators have the support they need.”

The Horizon of Innovation

“The advancements we’re seeing in AutoSlide technology programs and drilling programs are just the tip of the iceberg,” he said. “It’s not just about drilling faster or more efficiently; it’s about Actively C.A.R.E.ing for our employees out in the field.”

He sees H&P’s role as pivotal in this ongoing work.

“We’re not just users of technology; we’re pioneers,” he stated.

A Journey Continues

As Hughes reflects on his time with H&P, there’s a sense of both accomplishment and anticipation.

“Every step of my career has led me here,” he said. “From the mud and grime of the rig floor to the cutting edge of remote operations — it’s been an experience.”

Hughes’ story is more than a career; it’s a testament to the transformative power of Innovative Spirit. As H&P continues to push the boundaries of drilling technology, professionals like Hughes stand ready to lead the charge into a new era of efficiency, precision and possibility in the oil and gas industry.

PIONEERS OF AC DRILLING TECHNOLOGY LOOK TOWARD THE FUTURE OF ENERGY

What can be learned from a 104-year-old drilling contractor? H&P’s engineering executives, Joel Ferland and Chris Major, tell their story of one of the most pivotal moments in land drilling innovation, and what the future holds for the global industry standard FlexRig® fleet of rigs.

Q: How did the FlexRig® fleet come about?

Major: The locomotive industry was using new technology on their alternating current (AC) drives. It was revolutionary for them, and as we decided to develop an application for our industry, the AC drilling rig was born. Creating a drilling rig with a top drive integrated to an AC drive system, deployed in a scalable fashion — it became revolutionary for us as well.

It was not a popular move at first, but we wouldn’t be able to drill today’s modern wells without top drives. It was a bold decision that had a global impact — a monumental commitment in many ways, full of challenges, but as a company we were committed to Doing The Right Thing.

Pad drilling was a solution to address a customer’s need: multi-well rows. On land at the time, single wells would be drilled in a row. But even then, it wasn’t prevalent. When the FlexRig® fleet was developed, it led the industry as the first purposebuilt rig for pad drilling.

Ferland: We were the first of our kind, to design rigs for our specific needs and the needs of our operators. We were also the first to use inhouse engineering design. Our manufacturing capabilities allowed us to become a large-scale manufacturer capable of producing hundreds of drilling rigs in a short amount of time.

Rig 244 and Rig 252

Q: What has contributed to the longevity of H&P and its success in the drilling industry?

Ferland: The one thing that has enabled us to be so nimble and change with the market, has been the standardization of our fleet. A crew on one rig can go to the next and it’s identical. They know where everything is located, how to operate it, and it allows us to rapidly implement new processes and technology at scale. A single solution is deployed on all our rigs: we don’t have to do it iteratively.

Q: How are you taking the H&P legacy of the past 100 years and applying it to the next 100 years?

Major: The future is determined by data-driven decisions. We consider the wells currently being drilled, but our primary focus is on the next generation of wells.

Ferland: We always ask ourselves, “How can we do things better? How can we keep our people safer?” Those themes, guided by our Innovative Spirit, will carry us through the future. This evolution of robotics initiatives and increased automation creates a chain reaction of new opportunities for improvement, like challenging us to implement better maintenance processes so our equipment continues to run properly.

Major: We’re regularly drilling two-and-a-half-mile laterals, and now drilling three, even four-mile laterals. Manually tripping 8,000 meters of pipe has a cumulative impact on the body. We’ve always said, “We want people to use their brains and not their brawn.” We’re innovating to make each task less physically intensive.

Ferland: Automation allows us to drill wells repeatably and consistently, across an entire fleet of rigs. We all win in the end.

We’re always looking at different technologies –staying mindful of what’s going on, and what’s different. We investigate innovative technologies, some not even directly related to the oil and gas industry but could be adapted to our framework.

Q: How did you learn from the design process of the early FlexRig® fleet as you developed the newest addition, highlighted this year at ADIPEC: your walking rigs?

Ferland: Safety by design. When we designed our walking rig, we considered the frequent task of driving pins on a substructure during rig moves. ISO lock systems, native to the container industry, remove the need for a sledgehammer. We reduce exposure to serious injuries and fatalities through continuous improvement like this.

It was a team effort from the beginning: engineering, manufacturing, operations and most importantly the field. The end user of your product has the best input. We take pride in our ability to be our own internal customer.

Major: As we implement new initiatives, we reflect upon our historical journey as a company. It’s an honor to bring others alongside us on this path towards the future of the energy industry.
