Enterprise by H&P: 2022

I’ve enjoyed reading and watching the H&P Journeys from team members across the globe this year, and I am just astounded by how much we have grown. My H&P Journey began in January 1987 on a rig in East Texas. That year, you only needed two hands to count the number of land rigs working company wide. Over the past 35-plus years, our company has experienced immense transformation. In the 80s, I couldn’t have imagined I’d be writing about our FlexRigs, AutoSlide, software development, horizontal geothermal wells, partnerships with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and corporate ventures focused on technologies and scientific developments in 2022. These developments were beyond anyone’s comprehension three decades ago.

But as much as the company has changed, I also think about the things that remain the same, and that is equally important. H&P continues to be the best in the business, but it’s not just the advances we’ve pioneered in this industry; it’s also about consistent values. Values that have guided us for more than 100 years. Our values include teams caring about the safety of each other over everything else, respect for one another and “doing the right thing.” Our values have not changed. Similarly, the company’s purpose remains steadfast, grounded in efficient, responsible and safe energy that not only fuels our world’s economy but also fuels our lives. Products H&P helps develop, such as oil, natural gas and, soon, geothermal energy are essential to progress and flourishing in the world. The products and abilities the energy enables are all around

us. Whether you’re reading this on a computer monitor or a printed magazine, there’s a significant chance an H&P team member drilled the well to recover oil or natural gas necessary to produce or transport these goods.

Although often overshadowed by technology, nothing of our purpose can be fulfilled without our people!

Whatever your position is in this company, you play an important role in that purpose. We all make decisions and perform duties at the company — some impact safety, some drilling performance, some customer satisfaction, and others may be less visible but certainly not less important to fulfilling our mission. In this edition of Enterprise, you’ll have a chance to learn about our purpose, international expansion, new products and more. These outcomes are the result of all of us aligning on our purpose to achieve safe, efficient and responsible energy.

OUR PURPOSE

What is our purpose at H&P? It’s to improve lives through efficient and responsible energy. But what does that mean? What makes what we do so valuable to the world?

Oil and natural gas are an integral part of everyday lives, and it’s not only the gasoline in cars or the natural gas that heats homes or businesses. The oil and gas industry supports worldwide economies like no other industry. It spurs economic growth through hundreds of billions of dollars invested right here at home every year. It creates jobs across a wide range of other sectors to support activities. It pays higher wages and helps American families work their way up the economic ladder. Modern existence is largely dependent on

energy, both in terms of its accessibility and availability. The oil and gas sector is crucial to society’s overall wellbeing since it provides the energy that powers and maintains daily activities. This access is necessary for industries that provide food, heat, clothes, shelter, healthcare, transportation and technology. Plastics, lubricants, waxes, tars and even asphalt for roadways are all made from byproducts of oil refining.

In addition, the production of vehicles such as cars, trucks, boats, bikes, skateboards, scooters and even electric vehicles require the use of petroleum products. And don’t forget those diapers, pacifiers and toys used by parents and babies around the world that are made with oil, natural gas or both. In less

evident ways, oil and gas products are also essential to the world’s way of life and are used in the production of modern necessities like soaps, antiseptics, aspirin, computers, phones,

medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.

Where does H&P fit? Producers can’t extract these hydrocarbons without the use of a drilling rig such as H&P’s FlexRig® fleet. In

At the same time, H&P is fortunate that its role in the energy value chain positions it to meaningfully impact the efficiency, safety and environmental responsibility with which energy is sourced.

STALLS ARE A COMMON–AND COSTLY–CUSTOMER CHALLENGE

STALLASSIST ® SOFTWARE IS THE GAME-CHANGING SOLUTION

Despite being an undisputed leader in technological innovation for more than a century, H&P has a remarkably simple philosophy behind innovation: help our customers drill better wells.

As Product Owner Wes Taylor puts it: “H&P is a customer-centric organization, which means our customer challenges are what spearhead our innovation direction. When we see challenges in their well program, we want to find a way to fix it.”

Yes, it really is that simple. Even if the process of getting from problem to solution can take years of research and development, testing and retesting, prototyping and delivering, the purpose behind every H&P innovation boils down to this: How can we deliver better drilling outcomes to our customers?

“Engineers are renowned for developing something, whether it’s financially viable or not,” jokes Fergus Hopwood, technical fellow. “But H&P has always had a good handle on those things. Solving challenges that will be financially beneficial to the company and our customers.”

Downhole failures come in many forms, but a frequent offender for operators are motor and rotary steerable system (RSS) stalls.

Approximately 95 percent of operators experience motor/RSS stalls. This isn’t just a minor annoyance; it’s a major issue that can cause massive expenses.

Frequent stalls can lead to premature bit and Bottom Hole Assembly (BHA) failures, resulting in:

• Unplanned trips: $30,000-$150,000

• Tools being lost in the hole: $200,000-$800,000

• Sidetracks or cement plugs: $100,000-$750,000

If mitigation efforts are unsuccessful, operators may even plug and abandon a well entirely, resulting in losses that can range anywhere from $2 million to $50 million.

“We have a lot of brilliant people with a lot of great ideas,” said Taylor. “But we’re listening to the 60 percent of customers who are saying this is a problem. What can we put in the pipeline, or can we build this to assist the customer?”

The solution? H&P StallAssist® software StallAssist software advances our purpose of improving lives through efficient and responsible energy and is designed to not only detect downhole stalls but to mitigate and help recover from them. By increasing bit and bottom hole assembly (BHA) reliability, it helps decrease sidetracks and lost-in-hole occurrences and increases motor and bit longevity, resulting in more footage drilled per BHA and reduced time to target.

Both Taylor and Hopwood have played critical roles in the production of StallAssist software;

Taylor is part of the Product Management team and Hopwood is part of the Engineering team. However, StallAssist software was in development before either one got involved.

Hopwood helped H&P develop control systems for nearly 20 years as a vendor for two other companies. In 2018, he finally joined the team.

“I always found H&P to be the most forward looking of our clients,” said Hopwood. “They always tackled product development in a way that I enjoyed. That’s ultimately why I chose to approach them.”

It worked out well for both parties, as Hopwood went to work on H&P’s ambitious new project: StallAssist software.

“When I first came on board, StallAssist software had been conceptualized as a way to automate how a driller mitigated a stall,” he said. “At that time, nobody was designing with that in mind because operators didn’t want other systems on the rig. It was becoming difficult to add more systems, so it was obvious that to add an automated system successfully, we had to change the

interface. Once we started working on that, we started thinking about what exactly StallAssist software was going to be.”

Hopwood notes that typically an operator has a set of instructions for what to do if they see a stall. However, exactly following the procedure for detecting a stall is difficult when an operator has multiple tasks vying for their attention. Therefore, automating becomes important.

“We had conversations with a bunch of different operators about what they wanted and what came back was, a.) how we detect a stall, and b.) how we mitigate a stall,” said Hopwood. “I had several meetings with the product management group, diving into data to find stalls that were occurring on rigs, asking which rigs were experiencing most stalls, mining data to find instances of stalls and looking for ways to detect those.”

Taylor joined the StallAssist software project as Product Manager in 2019 after serving H&P in different roles since 2016. Taylor’s job was to work with the various stakeholders, including customers, to make StallAssist software the best it could possibly be.

“To get from idea to function, it takes the engineering group, a lot of field support people, boots on the ground and on the rig to show drillers how it works and create a feedback funnel to office. ‘This is what they like, don’t like, what works, what doesn’t,’” he said. “And of course, sales, because if we don’t have people to push it, then what’s the point?”

Both Taylor and Hopwood are quick to credit the many groups who worked on the project, as well as H&P’s process.

“We introduced a seven-step process two years ago that we applied to this,” said Taylor. “At each stage we go deeper and deeper with paperwork, legal requirements, financial projects, sales, business development and training needs. It’s a lot of work, but it’s all there for a reason.” “There were many stages along the way,” Hopwood continued. “In all the product development I’ve done over 30 years, this was a process that was quite enjoy-

able. Having a little bit of flexibility helped.”

StallAssist software was launched in April 2022 as part of H&P’s Failure Prevention Package and is currently on more than 100 rigs.

While StallAssist software is our latest technology, it’s part of a culture that dates back more than a century and represents our ongoing tradition of innovation.

“This business is very cyclical, but customer priorities change,” said Taylor. “We’re really good at adapting to the market and what customers want.”

“I’ve always admired H&P’s ability to be objective about when it’s time to move on from a certain technology and develop something new,” Hopwood said. “That has always been my impression from working with H&P, first from the outside and now on the inside. We’re not afraid to lead.”

NEXT-GENERATION GEOTHERMAL DRILLING CONTINUES H&P’S HISTORY OF MAKING HISTORY

At H&P, our purpose is proven by being a part of defining moments. The opportunity to be a part of that history happened for Toby Kern, drilling superintendent, North District.

“We were the first to drill a horizontal geothermal well in the United States,” said Kern. “That felt good. We accomplished something that was a first for the industry. We have a good team out there, and H&P did it.”

It was a milestone moment in Kern’s nearly half-century drilling career, which began right out of high school, with the past 25 years serving H&P.

It was also a landmark event for the company and the industry at large, remarks Amanda Colyer, regional director of operations, North Region. “We’re utilizing the ground for energy versus sourcing what’s in the ground,” she said. “That’s revolutionary.”

Colyer has worked at H&P for 10 years, on everything from performance engineering to data analysis, to operations and sales. Despite having experience across the board at H&P, she thinks geothermal might be one of the most exciting projects.

“We’re really on the forefront of research and development,” she continued. “We are in a place of potential transformation.”

But what is geothermal energy—and why does it hold so much promise for our company, the industry and the world?

Put simply, geothermal energy is produced from heat extraction from the earth. Steam is generated from the heat, which spins a turbine and creates electric power. Because the Earth is constantly producing heat, geothermal is an “always on” source of energy that is clean, reliable and renewable. Geothermal can be used to generate electricity and help meet America’s energy needs.

What inspired H&P, one of the industry’s most established contract drilling companies for oil and natural gas, to move into the burgeoning field of unconventional geothermal energy? The same thing that has always inspired us — an innovative spirit to answer a market need with state-of-the-art solutions.

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve lives through efficient and responsible energy, H&P has invested in and strategically partnered with leading geothermal companies that target unconventional geothermal, in other

words “geothermal anywhere.” “Geothermal anywhere” is the goal of next-generation geothermal—evolving from the conventional process of harvesting heat from rare hot water resources close to the earth’s surface to using drilling technologies to harvest heat in a wide variety of geologic settings, including hot, dry rock.

It’s a relatively new initiative in the energy industry, but it has already produced results.

This past August, Fervo Energy, a leader in unconventional geothermal energy, raised $138 million in new funding to build, own and operate 24/7 carbon-free power plants. This new funding will help Fervo bring geothermal-powered electricity to people in Nevada and Utah, as well as evaluate new projects in California, Idaho, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico and internationally.

Meanwhile, another leading unconventional geothermal company, Eavor Technologies, announced the commencement of drilling operations for the deepest and hottest directional geothermal well in history, known as Eavor-Deep™. Eavor chose H&P to execute on this significant goal.

What do these two ambitious, history-making geothermal projects have in common? H&P is making them possible, by providing the drilling rigs and associated drilling technologies, as well as the expertise provided by our people. Big things are happening in unconventional geothermal drilling, and we’re proud to help advance this exciting emerging energy revolution using the proven technologies of hydrocarbon exploration and extraction.

“The goal is to produce electricity, just like you would with natural gas,” said Colyer. “We’re using heat from the Earth to create steam from water.” Despite geothermal energy’s enormous potential, only a fraction has been realized due to technological and economic barriers.

Alongside partners like Fervor and Eavor, H&P is crossing those barriers with the drilling advancements born from H&P’s deep experience in the industry.

“Geothermal drilling is really similar to oil and gas drilling,” adds Kern. “We drill a well. It’s what we’ve been doing for more than 100 years. Our customers want a cased well and that’s what we’re going to provide them. The well profiles and casing sizes are different. Everything is just bigger with more volume. But drilling is what we do.”

spirit of discovery makes him feel what H&P’s first drillers must have felt more than 100 years ago.

“We’re learning as we go, facing challenges,” he said. “I knew we could do it. I knew we had the right people in place, and we could go out and get this done for the customer. I had no doubts that we could accomplish this.”

Colyer shares Kern’s enthusiasm, but she points to a more recent comparison.

“To me, it’s kind of like the shale revolution,” she said. “As people really got into

it, we had this blow up in the number of rigs and as people became more efficient, they’d drill fewer wells but get more out of it. Effectively, we’re following in the same footsteps with geothermal.”

It’s an exciting time for H&P, our partners, our industry—and everyone who stands to benefit from the promise of geothermal energy.

“The doors are wide open for H&P to move into geothermal,” Kern concluded. “There’s upcoming work in this field that we haven’t touched yet. It’s definitely the future.”

From Argentina to Australia, Colorado to Colombia, from the United States to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), H&P has numerous domestic and international opportunities for employees driven by wanderlust who love to work hard.

Just look at employees like Leland Jones. Jones began as a floorman in Wyoming 15 years ago and then moved with his rig to Pennsylvania. But he had ambitions that extended far beyond the continental United States.

“I first heard about offshore rigs and international opportunities when I started with H&P,” he said. “As a floorman, it wasn’t feasible. It was more for drillers and rig managers, but I remained interested in the concept. It was an opportunity that H&P offers that other companies don’t.”

As Jones worked his way up to field superintendent, he began to realize his goal of international employment was within reach.

“I never lost the spark,” said Jones. “The big thing is the adventure. Going to a foreign country and applying my hand to it.”

He took the first step and applied for an opportunity in Argentina.

“I didn’t get it, but applying taught me what I needed to know, and it paved the way,” he said. “When my current opportunity presented itself, I applied and got it.”

What is that current opportunity? Field Superintendent in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Abu Dhabi is about 6,938 miles (give or take) from

Pennsylvania and approximately a 16-hour flight across multiple time zones. Jones has worked in Abu Dhabi since February 2022, with a one-month-on, one-month-off schedule.

Working with new coworkers has also been a welcoming and encouraging experience for Jones, who said “The people are very nice. Very polite. Everybody wants to help. Everybody is friendly. People have been supportive.”

His new environment is helped by the fact that one of his coworkers from Pennsylvania is now his manager in Abu Dhabi.

It is a whole lot different. More challenging. Everybody has drivers. When I go out, I have a driver who takes me. But every day gets better. I’m learning more and more each day. “

“

And while he said the job is more challenging and different than back home, the company-wide commitment to H&P’s core values crosses continents.

“Being part of a close-knit team has been great,” he said. “We have a group of positive people working out here. They build us up and communicate. That’s the biggest thing. They’re always checking in. I played soccer with my boss the other day after two weeks of rig moves just to unwind.”

Jones said he tries to create the same environment for his employees.

“If they’re having a bad time, I’m right there with them,” he said. “It’s a lot of work and these guys have heart.”

When not on the job, Jones said despite the UAE being a different country and culture, life in Abu Dhabi is surprisingly familiar.

“Abu Dhabi is kind of westernized because it’s a business mecca with people from all over the world,” he said. “Many cultures mixed. You still need to respect the laws, but it’s very diverse.”

However, as a husband and father (of teenagers, no less), his overseas employment doesn’t just affect him.

“My wife was accustomed to two weeks on and off,” he continued. “We set up family meetings via video chat. There’s a 10-hour difference, so when she goes to work, I’m going to bed. But we make time to communicate. It just takes more effort.”

Bringing his family to Abu Dhabi is a goal of his, but surprisingly, the hesitation has come from his teenagers.

“They’re all about their friends, so I don’t want to uproot them,” said Jones. “My wife is like ‘heck yeah, let’s go!’ My wife is all about adventure and seeing the world. She’s been to more places than I have.”

He may have to wait until his teenagers are out of the house before he and his wife make a more permanent move overseas. If so, he’s already got places on the map where he’d like to move.

“I’ve heard about Australia and South America. I’d love to try my hand in Australia, but they all sound good,” he said. “We’ll have to see.”

Not surprisingly, Jones recommends his H&P colleagues take advantage of the international opportunities and has some advice for those who do.

“If you have that drive and ambition, there is a spot for you. It has been an adventure, while broadening my horizons. I’ve learned to get out of my comfort zone. Every day I’m growing more and more,” he concluded.

DO THE RIGHT THING ANA CRISTINA CRETU

GM of H&P Argentina (Buenos Aires)

Ana Cristina Cretu learned her core values as a girl, long before she was named general manager of H&P - Argentina in 2020, and even before she joined H&P 14 years ago. The reason is because Cretu’s values were instilled into her by her father.

“I learned to do the right thing from my father,” said Cretu. “He’s retired now but worked different jobs. Owning a small bar, electrician, construction and owning his own manufacturing company. He was a very hard worker. I was very lucky to have a family that encouraged me to do well.”

While her father never worked for H&P, he shared our same values and sense of purpose. This has worked well for his daughter in her H&P career,

as she helps us pursue efficient and responsible energy. She “wanted a change” from her previous employer, whose values didn’t match her own and was pleasantly surprised in her interview that H&P responded positively to that. She worked her way up to become the first female GM in the industry in Argentina.

Cretu said she is “very proud” of that promotion and the responsibility it entailed, even if it hasn’t always been easy.

“Running the company from my role is difficult because of the decisions I have to make,” said

Cretu. “I’m always striving to do the right thing, even if it’s not choosing the shortcut.”

In just two years since becoming GM, she has received another honor: being named one of H&P’s Core Values Award recipients for Do The Right Thing.

“I was very, very happy. Flattered,” said Cretu. “I wasn’t expecting this recognition.”

Even if she wasn’t expecting it, just ask her manager Eric Roberson. “I am proud to work with Ana Cris,” Roberson said. “She exemplifies Do The Right Thing, and this value transmits across her

organization. It is people like her that attract the ‘right’ folks to establish the H&P culture.”

She also credits the support she gets from H&P’s leadership.

“We have to have several difficult conversations, that won’t always make people’s lives easier,” said Cretu. “But if I must have that conversation, I know I will be supported. This award proves that.”

At H&P, we’re proud to honor Ana Cristina Cretu as a H&P Core Values Award recipient. We know her father is too.

SERVICE ATTITUDE ROCKY MARLOW

Rocky Marlow’s journey to H&P wasn’t typical. He graduated with an English degree from Oklahoma State University and worked as a screen printer for almost a decade, including owning his own shop. In 2011, Marlow was looking for a change and saw our ad in the Tulsa World for a technical writer. Thankfully, he’s been with us ever since.

Today, Marlow combines his two passions for language and machining that he picked up in screen printing to serve H&P as Technical Publications Specialist II.

“A lot of my work is taking engineering talk and translating that into information the supply chain can use to order parts and the field can install,” he said.

However, Marlow’s contribution to H&P goes far beyond his job description, as he works to improve the lives of his coworkers in ways large and small, whether that’s having BBQs and cookouts, or inviting coworkers to the lake.

“I’m always thinking about treating people how I would want to be treated,” he said. “We’re cultivating a community where people say what they need to say. I like to build personal relationships and have a lot of community involvement,” he continued. “If you don’t have good relationships, it’s really hard to make things work.”

Marlow also helps nurture the next generation. “Any time I see an intern, I always try to help them out. That’s one of the things I’m most proud of,” said Marlow. “H&P has been a blessing for me in my life. They were there for me when I really needed it, and I want to be there for others.”

His manager, Melissa Teal, said he is an added joy to the team.

“Rocky is genuinely ready to help anyone at any time, and that goes beyond his well-rounded knowledge,” Teal said. “He is vital to the Technical Publications team with his ‘be of service’ attitude. We all look forward to hearing ‘It’s going to be a good day’ from Rocky each day.“

As much as he does for his team, both on and off the clock, the ever humble Marlow was surprised to be named a Core Values Award recipient for Service Attitude.

“It was an unexpected honor,” he said. “It makes me feel good about myself. It gives me a sense of a moral compass that I need to continually strive to be a better person for the people around me who depend on me.”

Even if his journey wasn’t typical, we’re grateful Rocky Marlow found a home with H&P.

ACTIVELY C.A.R.E.

CODY UNRAST

Lead Investigator

Cody Unrast carries a reminder about the importance of safety with him every day—his missing right hand.

“Nine days after getting hired, I had an injury that almost led to a complete amputation,” said Unrast. “I could’ve prevented my injury. Lots of things happened in the aftermath, but I feel like I got a second chance.”

Following numerous surgeries and rehabilitation, he was back in the field two years later.

No longer a rig worker, Unrast became a field safety representative.

“I wasn’t sure how I could do it, but I had a story to tell, so I ran with it,” he said. “I’ve used my story to prevent others from getting injured.”

As a lead investigator, he helps improve the lives of others by showing the importance of safe and

responsible energy production. But he doesn’t just share his story or his injury; he leads by example.

“I’m ‘a safety guy,’ but I don’t want guys to see me as ‘the safety guy,’” he elaborated. “I’m one of the team. I actively care for them as people. My family eats because of the employees in the field. I’m going to talk with them, not at them. That’s how I keep them safe.”

As a husband and father who’s also away from home due to work, he knows what rig workers are going through and engages with them on a peer-to-peer level.

“I put things in perspective,” he said. “If you don’t do the right thing, someone’s going to have to pray for you. I don’t want to have to be that person. I will be, but I don’t want to have to be.”

His manager, James Sharp, said Unrast demonstrates Actively C.A.R.E. with the attitude he brings on-site.

“Cody is truly the honest and hardworking

employee every manager wants on their team,” Sharp said. “He cares about the people first of all. He wants to see everyone be safe and successful. Cody is a great mentor and teacher to anyone needing guidance. It’s easy for most people to tell someone how to do something the right way. Cody takes the time to show people the right way and explain to them why.”

While his greatest honor is keeping his coworkers safe, he’s proud to be named a Core Values Award recipient for Actively C.A.R.E.

“It puts a smile on my face to know I was recognized by my peers,” Unrast said. “It makes my heart feel good knowing I work with people who see value in me.”

His peers don’t just see value in him; they depend on him to get them home safely to their loved ones.

“Without them we don’t have a company,” he said. “I want everybody to have that opportunity to provide an honest living for their family.”

INNOVATIVE SPIRIT

LANCE MANN

Principal Outcome Process Specialist

Lance Mann was recognized for embodying H&P’s core value of Innovative Spirit and knows that true innovation means always looking for improvement.

Constant improvement has been a theme in his career. He graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Food Technology and worked in the food industry for 10 years. While there, he

joined an internal, Lean Six Sigma-style team focused on process excellence. While it may not seem like the food industry and contract drilling have much in common, Mann has seen many similarities.

“Whatever you are doing, or working with, understanding people is important. he said. “My experience is there will always be processes that are broken, and that you can make things better. That said, there are notable differences too. The biggest difference is vernacular. The jargon is totally different.”

Fortunately, Mann was a quick study. When he made the move to H&P, he was soon invited to join another internal group, Change Champions.

“My instructors saw I already knew a lot of the material and picked up stuff quickly,” said Mann. “So that inspired them to have me join the process excellence team.”

Now as Principal Outcome Process Specialist, Mann works with outcome partners and digital operations teams to refine processes and tools for continuous improvement and put his principles into practice when his team inherited the FlexCall.

FlexCall is a weekly video conference tasked with educating and engaging rig managers and other field employees. While FlexCall has been going on for years, he took internal feedback and took ownership of the sessions, switching FlexCall from slide-based presentations to informal, but informational, conversations. It just goes to show that improving lives and boosting efficiency don’t just happen in the field.

For Mann, inspiration comes from collaboration.

“Each week we do our best to get someone in the field to be at the planning session,” he said. “I also listen to podcasts all the time to get ideas on how to generate conversation, listen to others, and get good feedback.”

But the best feedback an employee can receive is recognition from his peers.

“It’s great to be called on for having an innovative spirit,” he said. “I feel like a million bucks.”

James Miller doesn’t work for recognition, but it certainly seems to follow the electrical superintendent for our West Texas operations.

“I’m proud that someone felt that I deserved the award,” said Miller. “However, I do feel that I was just doing my job.” Ironically, it’s this kind of humility and focus that has earned Miller the respect of his peers — and

helped earn him the honor of being named a Core Values Award recipient for Teamwork.

“I treat every day the same,” he said. “I go out and do the best job I can do. When someone asks for help, I help them. I treat all my teammates and co-workers the same.”

JAMES MILLER

West Texas Electrical Superintendent

Not acting like he’s better than anyone is one of the attributes that makes Miller one of the best at what he does, and the exceptional embodiment of H&Ps core values.

Before coming to H&P, Miller was a vendor for H&P, working in electrical services on the Flex 3 project. He joined the H&P team in 2003 as a field electrician, and, within a few years, became an electrical superintendent. He’s been in that role for 15 years, working in Fort Worth and Sequin, Texas, before landing in West Texas, where he’s served for seven years.

During his H&P Journey, Miller has crossed paths and served alongside many people and has great advice on how to embody H&Ps core values and work to advance our purpose. “Remember that everybody is different, and it takes all types to build an effective team,” he said. “No one person can do the job by themselves. You’ve got to open your ears and hear what is being said. In the military, we’re taught that even the most junior person has good

ideas, so you have to cultivate these ideas to make the best decision.”

His manager, Chris Jones, said Miller has been an integral part of facilitating the rollout of multiple electrical upgrades and projects. He personally assembles the kits to make sure everything is needed for the rigs.

“Most people know James as an Electrical Superintendent in West Texas, managing a team of electricians to complete preventative maintenance and respond to downtime events,” Jones said. “It’s what most people don’t see that exemplifies his teamwork. He has built and hosts several training courses to progress both new and seasoned electricians’ knowledge and skills. Not just for the electricians under him, but for electricians for all of West Texas.”

Miller’s peers certainly made a great decision by honoring him as a Core Values Award recipient for Teamwork.
