am not one to wish days away. Still, as this year creeps closer and closer to its end, I am on all fours, pulling myself closer and closer to celebrating 2022’s finale. As fellow pandemic survivor, you can surely relate to getting back onto your feet this past year. It's been tough, unpredictable and sometimes even scary. Yet, here we are, all bright-eyed and beyond thankful for the positives that 2022, and being forced to get back up on our feet and keep going, has brought (and taught)

In this issue, we bring you a lot of those positives – restaurants that have survived trial and tribulation, unfailing entrepreneurial spirit, brand-new eateries opening up across the country, destinations that have been rewarded for their excellence, new hiking trails, mountain bike adventures for the new year, shopping sprees galore and so much more.

There’s a Turkish proverb that says: “There is an uphill for every downhill and a downhill for every uphill.” Well, dear HL reader, you’ve earned it. It’s downhill from here! Take it in. Feel the wind meander its way through your curls, breathe in the last bit of 2022 air and be content in knowing that you did your best this year. And then, as you enter the new year, do so in style and pizazz and remember that wherever the wind blows you, it’s a journey that will be filled with loads of opportunities. Grab them with both hands, for in opportunity lies a wealth of wisdom and most probably your path to victory.

Merry Christmas to you and many blessings for 2023.

We made it!

@epicureanwines

Having just launched their 2021 Chardonnay, Epicurean Wines’ passion clearly lies in friendship and fine wine. Their wines are elegantly boxed and ideal for any special occasion – be it dinner on Christmas eve or a lovely New Year’s luncheon.

@kathrinkidgerdesigns

Amongst others, this award-winning South African fashion designer recently collaborated with Comfort South Africa to create a dress inspired by scent. With the dress the Durbanbased Kathrin designed, she certainly earned our support, bringing our senses (and wardrobes) into full bloom.

@theplettenberghotel

If you’re headed to Plett this holiday season, this Liz McGrath property is the one place you need to know about. Apart from its spectacular views across the Indian Ocean, it’s really the hotel’s food and wines from the region that impressed us most. Did you even know that Plett has a wine route?

CHRISTMAS WITH

A
HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 10
SUMMER

Matthew Field (vocals and guitar), Robin Brink (drums) and Ross Dorkin (bass) are no strangers to the entertainment world, having just returned from an exciting tour with singer-songwriter, George Ezra. Over only a few years, they’ve managed to achieve so much. Beatenberg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated bands. They have a canny ability to channel various kinds of styles and rhythms into their music with some referring to their genre as Afropop. Robin gives it a nod, saying it’s a nice thing to say.

We love a lot of African music and pop, Afropop and all the things that are happening in SA and Nigeria and across Africa, and across the world actually, because it’s more popular than ever before.”

Then he adds: “But then again, that would also maybe put us in a box.” Beatenberg’s long-term mission is to express much more than just Afropop. Still, coming from South Africa has inevitably brought an African influence to their music. “It’s cool to, in a way, be flying the flag,” says Robin, “especially with this huge tour we just did now.”

Apart from the recent George Ezra tour, Beatenberg has toured with the likes of Mumford and Sons, Baaba Maal and The Very Best. “That was a hugely valuable experience,” says Ross.

Robin and Matthew met in high school, where they started playing around with sounds. Matthew later went on to study music in Cape Town, where he met Ross. Eventually, music brought the three of them together. In fact, Matthew claims that Rob and Ross just had a connection. “I met them individually, but they had been supposed to get together in Cape Town. And then it happened.” Rob and Ross both grew up in Pietermaritzburg, but Rob had moved to Cape Town in his early teens and Ross only moved there after school. They had mutual friends from Pietermaritzburg, but Matthew introduced them through Cape Town, which brought them all to a “nice fullcircle connection.”

From where I sit, in my Pretoria office with Zoom open on my laptop, I see three young men with dreams in their eyes. The Beatenberg trio position themselves on a piano chair in a Ramsgate-based studio on the UK coast, and even the distance can’t suppress their passion and drive to achieve more. It’s tangible.

Beatenberg’s single, Pluto (Remember You) set South Africa’s national airplay record, spending seventeen weeks on radio charts. Eventually, it went on to win four prizes at the South African Music Awards in 2015. Their debut album, The Hanging Gardens of Beatenberg also won Album Of The Year that year, and they took home the prize for Group Of The Year.

HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 12

THE BAND

Previously signed with the Universal Music Group, Beatenberg is currently independent. “We’ve been very lucky in a way, because we’ve really seen all the different sides of the industry. So, we started really small, playing small little shows where people were talking in the audience, you know, or at little pubs. And then started playing festivals and then we obviously had a lot of success in 2014, 2015, even in SA.” The Covid-19 pandemic urged them to rethink where they were at, though and they find themselves in a new season. “We’re just a bit more mature now,” says Robin. “Yeah, we have a bit of experience behind us, which is really helpful I think.”

SOUTH AFRICAN BEATS ABROAD

Since then, the boys have been travelling the globe. In fact, Matthew and Ross are currently based in London, while Ross is located in Berlin. “I think we all ended up moving separately, even though it obviously works out for us as a band to be based in this part of the world.

’Cause the industry is still kind of more accessible here – just geographically,” says Matthew, who recently embarked on a solo career in addition to Beatenberg.

He adds that although South Africa’s music scene is growing and becoming more recognised globally, they moved abroad for their own independent reasons. He always imagined spending time in a different place, which is one of the reasons he moved to London. He just wanted to do something different. Being based in London and Berlin also makes last-minute tours like the recent George Ezra tour more manageable when it comes to logistics. Their manager is also based in the UK. “For me, that had a lot to do with it. Being here and working with him. Just as a base for expanding my career,” says Matthew.

Ross has always wanted to do his Masters in composition at Goldsmiths. “That was a big part of the last two years,” he says. “Just generally, working with more people, new people, you know, just expanding on all fronts.”

Still, since they’ve been away from home, Robin says he’s been noticing their South African roots in more ways than before. “I feel more South African in really good ways travelling now; being abroad, than I used to before.” He believes it affects their music on all kinds of levels. They want to show the world all the good things that come from South Africa, while also giving their fans some love. In the end, them being based abroad is what Robin calls a “really healthy life experience to expand your horisons.”

KEEPING IT FRESH

Beatenberg’s music brings a different colour to audiences abroad. It’s different. And while Matthew says there have been times where they felt that people were a bit slow to understand certain things that feel natural to them, people do react positively to their music. “You realise that everywhere in the world has its own kind of conventions, I suppose. I think it’s a positive thing that we can shake those up and its different. You know, people have to get used to it, but in general people are more and more interested in something fresh, which is really cool.”

TOURING WITH EZRA

After not playing together for almost three years, Beatenberg was psyched to jump on stage with the likes of George Ezra. Ross says having to perform in front of such a sizeable crowd after so long was a bit of a kick in the butt, but that it was great to just be on stage together again.

They commend George Ezra’s team for their professionalism and for treating them so well. In fact, they say it was one of the best experiences they’ve had. According to Ross it was inspiring since they’re also working towards having audiences like that someday.

George Ezra’s down-to-earth demeanour was another highlight of the tour. The way he spoke about his work and the albums he’s done, and how he balanced having fun and taking things seriously, performing in front of such huge crowds every night. Of course, the catering also deserves a mention. “Lovingly made food every day. It makes it a lot easier.” They had a crew of seventy people and a catering room that was set up every day. “They make a selection of things and there’s always like pudding and stuff,” says Matthew. Jokes aside, healthy, good food is a big deal for the Beatenberg boys. “We’re not teenagers anymore who just want to eat junk food and it doesn’t matter,” says Robin. For them, it was about “the whole experience of being together, more like a family vibe, quality of life.”

With that in mind, Robin adds that George Ezra is “so down to earth” and “really easy to be friends with. Really real.”

A SOUTH AFRICAN CHRISTMAS ON THE CARDS

The good news is that the boys are headed to South Africa this festive season and one of the reasons for their visit is to celebrate the release of their brand-new EP (or mini album) called On the way to Beatenberg, which was released November 10th.

All six tracks on the EP - which they refer to as a very organic album when it comes to music and production - were recorded in one of their favourite recording spots, Sunset Recording Studios just outside Stellenbosch. The songs are from 2019’s summer in South Africa – very different to what they are currently working on for 2023.

BEATENBERG’S BRINGING THE BEAT THIS FESTIVE SEASON: “December vibes,” is all Beatenberg’s about this holiday season. The boys will be in Joburg on 3 December, performing at Constitution Hill, with tickets available from Howler. This will be followed by a show at the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts in Cape Town on 11 December, and you can book tickets to this event via Webtickets.

BEATENBERG’S SUMMER CHRISTMAS PLAYLIST

Beatenberg has put together a Summer Christmas Playlist specially for our readers. Scan the QR code to listen to their favourites this holiday season.

The new year will see a brand-new album and while they can’t say much about it yet, there are definitely exciting times ahead! “We’re trying to make something powerful and strong; hopeful maybe,” says Robin.

TO HEALTH!

How to stay healthy this holiday season

Staying healthy (not to mention in shape) during the holiday season is hard. There’s the baked scones and bubbly; the picnics and the parties, and then some more. By ensuring that you have some healthy, nutritious food in your fridge (or in your beach bag) and some happy thoughts in your head, you can help yourself and your family to stay healthy.

Being healthy is not just about what you eat. It’s about your thoughts too. And, what better time than this time of year to practice gratitude? It’s true – scientific studies have shown that practicing gratitude improves both physical and mental health. According to The Harvest Table, a business that largely focuses on physical health and wellness, one must be intentional about investing in your health, both physically and mentally. Perhaps pursuing a slower, more sustainable lifestyle is what you might want to embark on this holiday season. Practicing gratitude forms part of slow living, as our mental health plays an important role in our eating patterns. Eating well and making healthy life choices starts with making the decision to pursue it.

#WHATSINOURFOOD

When it comes to healthy food, the Healthy Living Alliance’s Programme Manager, Nzama Mbalati says: “We need to return to real, well-grown, unprocessed food –fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, seafood, and pasture raised animal products.” She says consumers are being influenced by an industry that is only seeking profits. “Food companies are a major driver for the rising burden of nutrition-related chronic diseases.

Parents and children are the targets of aggressive advertising campaigns which mislead people into believing that products such as fruit juices, yoghurt and breakfast cereals are healthy, when they often contain harmful ingredients. We need to change our perceptions of these products and fight for our right to access healthy food, more easily.”

Fun fact:

The #whatsinourfood campaign calls on government to demand that food and beverage companies put clear front-ofpackage (FoPL) labels on food items high in fat, sugar and salt.

BAOBAB, MORINGA, HIBISCUS Superfoods for gut health and everyday vitality

The top three African superfoods linked to gut health and overall vitality are said to be Baobab, Moringa and Hibiscus. If you enjoy experimenting with food, try these:

Baobab fruit powder

This powder is a nutrient-rich superfood that comes with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and dietary fibre. It’s also one of the richest plant-based sources of calcium known, containing almost four times the amount of calcium in milk. It is therefore perfect for children, vegans, pregnant and post-menopausal women. Baobab powder also contains six times as much potassium as a banana, which helps regulate blood pH, blood pressure and conduct nerve impulse. It has four times more vitamin C than an orange and it’s an excellent source of magnesium. It’s also exceptionally rich in bioavailable iron.

Fun Fact

Did you know?

It can take a Baobab Tree up to 200 years before it produces its first fruit.

A Baobab-Moringa blend

BaoActive African Superfood also produces a super blend of Baobab and Moringa powders (R198 for 300g), which is high in vitamins C, E, K, B3 and B6, potassium, calcium, magnesium, protein and soluble dietary fibres. This combination is said to also provide strong immunity-building functions to protect the body from the toxic effects of stress. In addition, it provides an important level of vitamin C as an antioxidant boost against infections.

Add this to smoothies, power shots, lattes and yoghurt, or combine it with other delicious, healthy ingredients like coconut water, almonds and frozen banana for a yummy, creamy boost to your day.

Benefits of a Baobab-Moringa blend:

• Combats tiredness and fatigue

• Promotes muscle growth and strong bones

• Memory enhancement and cognitive health

• Keeps you energised, sharp and focused

Hibiscus for your health

Hibiscus powder is also said to be a powerful antioxidant. BaoActive’s 100% PURE Hibiscus Powder (R98 for 80g) brings a deep pink, fuchsia colour and a refreshing, tangy raspberry flavour to water, hot and cold teas, smoothies, yoghurts, icecreams, desserts and various other healthy recipes. It helps to reduce hypertension, lower cholesterol, prevent fat accumulation and lower blood pressure and is available online (www.baoactive.co.za) or from Wellness Warehouse (www.wellnesswarehouse.com). THE GREEN SIDE OF LIFE

YOUR LOCAL FARMACY AND CANNAPORIUM

BRANDS OF EXCELLENCE

The Green Side’s story begins on 18 September 2018 when eighteen judges of the Constitutional Court ruled in favour of the Davidsons Judgement. This was called the Zondo Commissions. (Read more about it in the article, Concourt rules that personal use of dagga is not a criminal offence, published by News24 on 18 September 2018).

CANNA TRADE AFRICA WHOLESALE AND DISTRIBUTION

At the beginning of 2018, we were ready with a brand-new company called Canna Trade Africa Pty Ltd (CTA). The company was set to become the apple of cannabis with a seed-to-sale understanding of the industry. CTA was launched at the first-ever cannabis expo, held in Tshwane that December and it came with three pillars: products, protocol and price. All our products have to match the criteria.

The next step was to open a showroom and a retail store. We found a venue in Greenside, a leafy suburb in Joburg and as we looked at the

space from outside, the name dawned on us: The Green Side. That was the perfect name for our new CTA showroom.

THE GREEN SIDE, YOUR LOCAL FARMACY AND CANNAPORIUM

CTA is always about innovating. We played around with the words ‘Farmacy’ (food as real medicine) and ‘Cannaporium’ (a combination of cannabis and emporium). This brought us to the perfect line to describe the two sides of cannabis in our store.

We were blown away with the huge amount of support since launching the store. Customers enjoyed the opportunity to find out more about their favourite plant and being able to do that in a new, upmarket environment without the stigmas of the old illegal dagga industry.

FRESH AND HEALTHY CERTIFIED ORGANIC PRODUCE

In 2016, we started a business – Fresh & Healthy – to give back. We understood that the only way to achieve complete holistic wellness is to see our bodies as temples.

That means we need to feed our bodies certified, organic produce.

THE EXPANSION JOURNEY

We’re extremely fortunate to have returned to pre-Covid trading levels. As we needed capital to expand, we decided to create a fund called The Green Seed. You can’t build and sustain a fire without fuel. The fund gave us the ability to launch and sustain our new flagship store, The Green Side, Sandton, which now has frequenting customers. Since CTA is all about innovation, we are super excited to add another two components to this store: A plant-based deli and diner!

Here you can enjoy out-of-this-world, guiltfree vegan burgers, sloppy Joes (made from lentils), toasted plant-based cheese and tomato sandwiches and more at very affordable prices.

Since The Green Seed was so successful and sold out, the next step was to open a new fund to expand nationally. We have now launched The Green Fund Co and since then, we have opened the first of six new stores. This

HOLLAND BEYOND BUSKING

The Cape Town Arts Festival (previously known as the Cape Town Festival) is renowned for giving emerging artists a platform with their Beyond Busking Program. South Africans like Emo Adams and Freshly Ground also came from this program.

Following this year’s festival, there is another up and coming artist whose subway busking might just see him transform into a famous performer.

If you’ve been to Kalk Bay before, you might have heard Morné Holland’s voice echo from the subway. This might not be the case for much longer, though as Festival CEO, Yusuf Ganief says: “He will most likely become a sought-after singer, song writer and performer, going beyond the life of a struggling Busker to a fully-fledged professional musician.”

Holland - whose music was not only a hobby, but also his way of making a living on the streets of Kalk Bay - has recently been chosen to go through training in song writing under Clive Ridgeway. This included vocal development, life mentorship and stage presence with the CTAF. Since completing his song writing course with flying colours, he’s been churning out songs. His new hit song, I am a Busker, is the result of a successful 13-week pilot upskilling project - a tribute to all buskers. P.S. Did you know that you can fund a busker? KAPOKBOS RESTAURANT

After years of being nomads, the husbandand-wife team, chefs Juan Fourie and Samantha (Sam) Morris-Fourie finally rooted themselves on the beautiful Weltevrede Wine Estate. Now, they happily run the recently launched Kapokbos Restaurant.

“Sam and I are excited about the direction the Estate is heading and really thrilled to be joining the Weltevrede Wine Estate family,” says Juan.

Weltevrede Wine Estate is located just outside Bonnievale in the Western Cape’s Robertson Wine Valley. The Jonker family has been farming here for a hundred years, which makes it one of the oldest South African wine brands to still be owned and run by the same family. Now in the hands of Philip Jonker, the fourth-generation family winemaker and a specialist in Chardonnay, the Estate (and now also its new restaurant) inspires South Africans with top-quality wine and cuisine.

Kapokbos – named after the indigenous herb found in the veld surrounding Weltevrede –overlooks the newly landscaped rose-and-vine garden of the Estate. With the chef couple’s fine dining and private cheffing background, you’re certainly in for a treat! According to

Juan, their menus present contemporary country-style cuisine, incorporating local tastes, culture and creativity. The restaurant’s offering melds seamlessly with the ethos of the Breede River Valley’s pioneering Weltevrede Wine Estate, which is well-known to winelovers around the world. It is therefore only a matter of time before Kapokbos is also wellknown by foodies around the world.

DID YOU KNOW?

Weltevrede Wine Estate (which forms part of Cape Country Routes) has just undergone an extensive revamp and re-development of the farm’s visitor experiences. The opening of Kapokbos Restaurant followed right on the heels of these new developments. Perfect timing, don’t you think?

In addition to the beautifully landscaped rose-and-vine garden, Weltevrede now also offers a world-class visitor centre, which is open for tastings (in a new tasting venue), as well as underground tours where you get to enter a world steeped in the history of Chardonnay, old books, artworks, memorabilia and historic exhibits, highlighting the Estate’s heritage of winemaking excellence. There is also a lovely new kids’ play area.

Kapokbos has quickly become the name on everyone’s lips when it comes to restaurants in the Robertson Wine Valley. Dishes include traditional South African Skaapstertjies with curried pickle onions and Frikkadel with tomato smoor and brandy sultanas. And, don’t dare to leave without trying their Amarula ice-cream sandwiches with honeycomb! Of course, wine tasting snacks are also available.

The area’s new go-to restaurant is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 – 16:00 (last seating at 15:00) and on Friday and Saturday for dinner from 18:00 to 11:00 (last seating at 20:00). Booking is essential. H

DON’T KILL MY VIBE!

GODDESS GARDEN CAFÉ OPENS UP IN RIETONDALE

At Goddess Garden Café Rietondale, it’s all about the vibe. A bold, pink and often al fresco vibe. This dining and events destination was bound to be different, catering for a largely Afrikaans community, and while some of it resembles what we’ve so quickly come to love about the Goddess Café brand, there are certain elements that make it unique.

Anelda Martin (53), the owner of Goddess Café says the Moot was an untapped market and they jumped at the opportunity to buy a property, rather than leasing. Located in the space where the well-known Laughing Chefs restaurant was initially based, the Rietondale property comes with great character. We’re talking wooden floors, pressed ceilings and magnificent fireplaces.

Not to mention the beautifully manicured gardens and ample space ideal for private functions and parties. All in all, this garden café is a home away from home, especially for women.

No men, you ask? Well, they do cater for men with a Goddess Boyfriend Breakfast on the menu, but you’ll have to tune into your feminine side as everything here is a fusion of

florals and fuchsia. So, prepare your senses for pink drinks, neon lights and a feast of flowers. The menu is currently still the same in all four Goddess Cafés, but there are plans to customise it to each store’s patrons.

Anelda has owned many businesses in the past and therefore it won’t be strange if another Goddess Café pops up somewhere soon. She says: “We don’t plan, we wait for opportunities to come our way. We would love

What do Goddess Café patrons prefer?

Linden: Vegetarian and colour.

Waterkloof: Meaty and classical.

Southdowns: Sweetness and party vibes. Can you guess what Goddess Garden Café Rietondale’s patrons would love most?

to open another store toward the end of 2023. It will be in Joburg.”

Her love for beautiful things and letting you experience the art of hospitality with all five senses is what brought her to the restaurant industry fifteen years ago.

You might remember the Isabella’s – her popular cake and food franchise - which she later closed. Now, currently on her fourth Goddess Café, she’s clearly hit a niche market. The blossoming concept started in Waterkloof in 2019. It is here, at Waterkloof Corner where many Pretorians would come for their drive-in fix - beautifully plated and brought to your parking bay on a glimmering tray - during the Covid-19 lockdown. Luckily, things are now back to normal and there are now also Southdowns and Linden stores, as well as Goddess Garden Café Rietondale, Est. October 2022.

Have your furry friend join you for a bite. Goddess Garden Café Rietondale has a special Pooch Menu with at least four different meal options, as well as complimentary peanut butter doggy treats. H

VEE & FORTI WINE BAR

Part of the Forti Group of Restaurants, you’re sure to find some vino favourites at Vee & Forti, based at Lynnwood Bridge, Pretoria. Apart from the exciting menu, they offer a Gastronomic Extravaganza as it would be served on Italian Festivals. Served for a minimum of eight people, this platter-style meal is perfect for celebrating. Of course, you can also visit Forti Grill & Bar at Sun Time Square Casino too. Since they’ve recently been awarded the Eat Out Woolworths Financial Services Service Excellence Award at the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards, it can only be one for the books.

Pop a bottle of… Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel Satin Nectar Rosé Demi-Sec. It’s the bubbliest time of the year after all, so why not raise a glass to summer and all things festive with this bright salmon pink bubbly, a recent trophy winner for Best Nectar at the 2022 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge.

CAPITO!

If Prosecco is your thing, you can’t go wrong with Capito! Launched at The Club in Hazelwood in 2020, Capito! has only been going from strength to strength and their extensive wine list is probably one of the main reasons people keep coming back. Plus, with a qualified sommelier at your side, the experience is always so much better.

Pop a bottle of… Prosecco! True to their Italian roots, Capito! often offers a glass of Prosecco as welcome drink to loyal guests. Welcome drink or not, give their Vini La Delizia Prosecco from Veneto in Italy a try.

INTOWINE

Intowine on Pretoria’s Selati Street is the place to be if you’re keen on exploring wine cultivars and brands different to those you’ll generally find in stores. They offer regular informal wine tastings at this quaint wine bar in Alphen Park, and they also do off-site private wine tastings for special events. It truly is like a little piece of Stellenbosch in the heart of the Old East.

Pop a bottle of… Stellenrust Clement De Lure MCC. This Méthode Cap Classique is a bubbly for any occasion. It pairs well with spicy seafood dishes, or fresh garden salads with a coriander twist and it is one of the wonderful MCC options you can find at Intowine.

We tend to believe it’s been done intentionally - to let the coffee and cake do the talking.

CULTURE CLUB

Tapas are probably the best food to celebrate with. Culture Club at The Village in Hazelwood defines tapas as a style of dining, rather than strictly Spanish recipes. Here, it’s all about sharing and this is the ideal time of year to be doing exactly that.

Indulge in a glass of… G&T. This is one of the spots in Pretoria where gin and tonics have become a speciality. Experience Culture Club’s #Ginefication which they refer to as: “Not your grandmother’s regular gin and tonic.”

They have an ever-growing selection of gins to choose from.

MERCI BIEN MADAM & SIR

A good time, any time

Located on the bustling, vibrant Florida road in Windermere, Durban, is a vibey venue called Madam & Sir. It’s only been around since November 2021, yet this trendy, quality eatery has already become a favourite among both locals and international guests.

Open from 7AM (with their kitchen closing at 10PM) Madam & Sir is the perfect dining destination to visit at any time of day. Whether it be for a delicious meal, some chillout time to escape your busy work schedule, a mid-day meeting or business lunch, a romantic evening, or a fun venue for after-work cocktails – Madam & Sir caters for all of this and more.

The founding couple are both architects and Nqobile and Mholi Mthembu’s skill in the corporate world is evident in the clever design of this French-feel venue. The large

patio area’s retractable awning allows for outdoor dining no matter the weather and trendy bistro-style chairs with wooden tables keep things classic and comfortable. Inside, a chic circular bar with stylish bar tables and a gorgeous mural along the wall creates a funky European ambience.

Tried and Tested

Our delicious lunch consisted of a grilled calamari starter on a bed of rocket, coupled with a spicy, yet sweet cream-mayo dip with red pepper and paprika. We tried to convince the chef to share his secret recipe, but alas, no luck. Madam & Sir’s baby kingklip on the bone is a showstopper and for dessert, we can highly recommend the Trifle Nostalgia to share.

The restaurant does great seafood and there is also sushi on the menu. Cobra Chef Bhengu - known as the Sushi King - has an illustrious reputation in the area, and sushi is said to be his forte.

Other signature dishes include the curry, a variety of seafood options with masala sauce and plenty of vegetarian options.

Also order a Hubby bubbly for your table –an added touch to enjoy along with one of Madam & Sir’s impressive cocktails. H

SUMMERHILL GUEST ESTATE

DURBAN’S PERFECT PAIRING

The KwaZulu-Natal-based Summerhill Guest Estate is situated in the upmarket residential suburb of Cowies Hill, Pinetown. A mere twenty-minute journey from Durban, this is the perfect destination for a staycation, a beautiful romantic weekend away, or even the place to plan those intimate gatherings for special occasions.

HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 46

The Richter family who owns and runs Summerhill Guest Estate are all as wonderfully warm and charming as the enchanting estate itself. In fact, they welcome you into their home as if you are a relative. Summerhill – which has been operating as a guesthouse and restaurant since 1997 – was initially their family home, and that is exactly how it feels when you walk in. It’s the perfect home away from home.

Upon our visit, we took a stroll around the grounds and learned a lot about how the family has come to create this magical retreat. Head Chef, Johannes Richter’ philosophy –one of crafting a menu worthy of a Michelinstar, using mainly locally sourced ingredients or products grown on the property - plays a vital role in this guest experience.

in timeless elegance.

Tall candle holders and fresh Proteas in a glass vase adorned the table. Each course from the fine dining tasting menu was paired with an exceptional local wine and the team are clearly well practiced in their craft. Johanna - a renowned sommelier - has an abundance of knowledge and hand-picked each wine to match the food to perfection.

Our dinner kicked off with sourdough bread and sardine butter, sweet potato and macadamia, truffle, cauliflower, and dahl miso. We also had gourmet Greek feta, lemon pickle and Mexican oregano. Not to mention Midland’s chicken, pear and tamarind. Mains included succulent duck and lamb, and there were also vegetarian options available. Finally, dessert was a trio of unbelievably delicious options. Think lemon curd and strawberry, mascarpone panna cotta, vanilla pudding and sorghum ice-cream, as well as Tanzanian chocolate and tree tomato.

At Summerhill there is a big focus on sustainability. All the purchased produce comes from local farmers they know by name, and whose practices are well understood and trusted. And the supply chain works full cycle; everything is used.

Inspired by nature, all dishes are seasonal, and ingredients used include those which are in season – veggies from the vegetable patch, or fruit ripe for picking from trees all around the grounds. Even the eggs are fresh from chickens that freely roam the estate.

STAY A WHILE

The epitome of country elegance, Summerhill’s rooms are beautifully designed. They are light and spacious with warm wooden flooring and high thatched ceilings, and each of the fourteen rooms feels like a private country home in itself. They all come with a lounge area and a bathroom with a tub perfect for long, luxurious bubble baths. The rooms are named after Jazz musicians who have previously stayed at Summerhill; some even gracing guests with a performance or two.

LIVING-ROOM STYLE DINING

The main event – true fine dining in Durban – happens at the on-site restaurant, The Living Room, which has just been awarded Restaurant of the Year at the Eat Out Woolworths Awards. This restaurant’s menu has given new meaning to the Durban culinary scene, with a French foundation and Japanese influences. Simply exceptional.

Sitting in The Living Room with a warm, crackling fire and local music in the background, the dinner service is like a well-choreographed dance. Under the thatch ceiling with high wooden beams and a wrought iron chandelier, we were enveloped

The majestic beauty of the South Coast harks back to a bygone era where life was simpler, slower and more relaxed. For a holiday destination, the South Coast is unparalleled in so many ways, with captivating, wild and natural beauty to explore through an array of activities on offer. Here you can get your blood pumping like nowhere else on earth. Merely a 40-minute drive inland, there’s a whole new world of excitement and possibilities on display.

GO AND EXPLORE

Oribi Gorge is a natural South African marvel. The tranquil wonderland’s mountains stretch as far as the eye can see - all the way to the mountains of Kokstad in the distance – with passes displaying new gorges and valleys around every corner. We recently embarked on a mountain hike – the brand-new Weza Hiking Trail – in the iKwezi area near Harding, with our destination being the Mkhoba waterfall. Walking through the untouched natural landscape and reaching this crystal-clear waterfall was pure bliss. We even got to swim under the cascading water – a great refresher for the hike back.

C’MON. JUMP!

Our next stop was Oribi Gorge – the ideal destination for adrenaline junkies - complete with the thrill of The Wild Swing - where we jumped off the edge of a 165m-high cliff!

YOU’VE NOT BEEN IF IT’S NOT ON INSTA

After our fill of excitement, we made our way to Leopards Rock for a quick photo opportunity. The amazing natural rock formation juts straight out into the sky, where it gives the illusion of you sitting right on the edge of a floating rock high above the meandering river and valleys below.

WHERE TO STAY

Lake Eland Game Reserve is simply magical. We stayed in a charming wooden lake cabin from where we watched the fading sun glisten on the rippling water and then disappear behind the mountain. Sundowners in hand, we listened to an orchestra of birdsong, the soft whistling of the reeds and percussion of the African bush. A welcome retreat after a day filled with excitement.

The self-catering accommodation - complete with braai facilities - is perfect for families and offers a secure escape where you are surrounded by nature, with the luxury of a beautifully maintained property.

It's one of those courageous moments that make you feel invincible. Plus, it obviously comes with bragging rights. You’re also in good hands at all times, with friendly and professional guides who ensure that your safety comes first.

BRIDGE THE GAP

A delicious Ranger breakfast kicked off our second, action-packed day at Lake Eland’s suspension bridge. The drive to the bridge took us through the Game Reserve where we were treated to an up-close encounter with a journey of giraffes. We also saw herds of buck and wildebeest, as well as some zebras.

The short walk across the suspension bridge - which hangs over a 130m gorge - was an incredible experience on its own. We then made our way to the Lake Eland Zipline - a 4.5km stretch of pure euphoria and an extraordinary way to tour the Oribi Gorge. The zipline is an engineering masterpiece with a course of fourteen zipline stations set high amidst the mountains. It allows you to slide down from station to station, while enjoying the scenery in a truly unique way. Two guides accompanied us during the whole experience, giving us a clear rundown of what to do and how to do it.

TROTTING ALONG

Our journey drew to a close on horseback, observing the beautiful landscape’s lush and diverse ecosystems during an exciting out ride. It’s a wonderful activity for both day visitors or holiday makers and the perfect ending to an unforgettable South Coast adventure. H Q @infosouthcoast

We can confidently say, if you are a thrill seeker, this one is for you. The rush of the 2.3-second adrenaline-pumping freefall and then swinging in a giant gorge amidst the magnificent cliff and a tumbling waterfall will leave you dumbstruck.

EXPLORE SA’S ROADS LESS TRAVELLED

WITH AN E-BIKE

#HelloLifestyle by Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 50

you’re a keen cyclist - be it a roadie or a mountain bikerone thing is certain: E-bikes have followed the off-road trend and are making in-roads into the gravel biking scene. And, as avid explorers of the countryside, we are so here for it!

ENJOY THE RIDE!

More and more cyclists – especially those doing it recreationally – now have the opportunity to enjoy the freedom of gravel without the grind of long-distance riding.

New bicycle technologies, the thrill of exploring unchartered terrain and a surprising social aspect has caused gravel to gain the perception of being cool.

Gravel roads not only offer exciting adventure, but it also boasts a scenic alternative to experiencing South Africa’s beautiful countryside. That includes areas like Mpumalanga’s majestic vistas, the Garden Route’s greenery, the Karoo’s vastness, and the Northern Cape’s long open (dirt) roads.

E-bikes might be new to the cycling scene, but it is undoubtedly here to stay. It’s been constantly growing in popularity and if you have a passion for exploring (especially areas off the beaten track) there’s definitely a gravel adventure or two to be had.

With e-bikes, families with a combination of weekend riders, fit riders and novice riders can easily take on the grind of the gravel and ride together without feeling the pressure of trying to keep up. It’s your ticket to biking freedom!

RACING FOR FUN

Gravel races have brought versatility to the cycling circuit and interestingly enough, people taking to e-bikes for events like these are on the increase. The challenge of such gravel races is that it can be rather hilly terrain and long distances are often covered. With the help of an e-bike, social riders who still want to do the distance can do that now. Tougher cycling events have therefore become more accessible, offering the less fit rider a ticket into races and longer routes.

GRAVELGRINDER TOURS

These cycling tours include a series of three-day social gravel road cycling adventures around the beautiful Karoo towns of Prince Albert and Graaff-Reinet. Riders can expect to do about 55-70km per day, with full back-up, luxury accommodation and exciting culinary adventures, including great wines.

Non-rider companions are also welcome on these tours and they have an experienced team that includes buses, trailers, water point teams, sweep vehicles and ER24 medics available throughout the tour.

SWARTBERG 100 GRAN FONDO

For those up for a challenge, there is always the Swartberg 100 Gran Fondo race, comprising of 171km. It comes with a 3000m climb, including 79km of gravel in three Sectors. The race passes through Prince Albert, Klaarstroom, De Rust and the Cango Caves, boasting the most beautiful scenery. While it circumnavigates the Swartberg mountain range, it does however include the Swartberg Pass, which is notoriously challenging.

AMAKHOSI SAFARI LODGE

SOUL CLEANSING AND CONSCIOUS CONSERVATION

Zululand is one of the most unique destinations for an African safari. Apart from its magnificent scenery and interesting history, it also boasts an array of lodges with a strong conservational aspect to it. One such lodge is Amakhosi Safari Lodge, located along the banks of the Mkuze River in the Amakhosi Private Game Reserve, not too far from Pongola. Couple that with a yoga session or three and you’re set for a soul cleansing, experiential safari of a lifetime.

#HelloLifestyle

HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 52

On a recent yoga safari with Yoga with Virginia, I was once again amazed at what nature and a bit of breathing and stretching can do for one’s mind, body and soul. Amakhosi’s ideal location and recently launched yoga safari experience had us submerged in the sights and sounds of nature from comfort of our luxurious and spacious rooms, our seats at the dinner table and even while doing yoga on the spa’s lawn.

Keep an eye out for Amakhosi Safari Lodge’s upcoming Yoga and Health Retreats available in 2023.

As with most safari lodges, Amakhosi Safari Lodge offers the usual morning and afternoon game drives. Our experienced ranger and tracker, Philip and Jeremy went out of their way to show us as much as possible during our stay. In fact, we got to see a cheetah with her three cubs twice, Philip - a specialist birding guide - mimicked birds like I’ve never heard before, Jeremy told us about the Zulu culture and we even got to take part in a bush walk.

A MAGICAL BUSH CLEANSE

Considering the fact that it was a yoga safari, our senses were heightened, we were more conscious of our surrounds and evidently, we were able to appreciate so much more of our three-day bush experience. It was pure bliss.

Amakhosi – which means the place of kings – left a lasting impression. Amidst Knob Thorn Trees, Black Monkey Thorn Trees, impressively large Euphorbia Trees and Magic Guarri Trees, we got to explore a piece of bushveld very different to that of the Kruger National Park. And, while Amakhosi is home to the Big 5, it really was the birdlife that took our breath away. Evidently, it was quite the bonus to have Philip – with his immense passion and knowledge for our feathered friends – as our ranger.

In addition, Amakhosi Safari Lodge offers guests a very unique safari experience during the rainy season. For those keen on heading into the bush on foot as the moon sticks out its head behind the clouds, Amakhosi’s Frogging Safari could be a lifechanging experience. Be sure to enquire about this adventure when you book.

CULTURAL HERITAGE, BIODIVERSITY AND CONSERVATION

The Zulu culture is deeply engraved in the area and even on the reserve. The Zulu king’s palace is merely 20km from Amakhosi Private Game Reserve, hence the lodge is technically located in a royal region. Ulundi is about an hour’s drive from it, where the famous Battle of Ulundi took place, and there is even some signs of bushmen who lived in the area. The Zulu king, Dingaan and his half-brother, Mpande are also said to have fought here, with Mpande receiving some assistance from the Voortrekkers to beat Dingane.

Amakhosi Safari Lodge is located on an irreplaceable piece of land when it comes to biodiversity too. According to Alwyn Wentzel, the reserve’s Operations Manager, the area is home to a lot of red data plant species and various vegetation types. Plus, 30-40km of the Mkuze River is “quite protected under reserves,” he says. It’s also part of the iSimangalisu Wetland Park, which is a World Heritage Site.

Keeping the animals on the reserve safe, is yet another priority. Wentzel says in the past five years there has been less and less support from government in the fight to keep rhinos safe. Hence, he says they’ve taken things into their own hands and Amakhosi now has a canine unit. Since that’s been put into place, arrests on pursuits have increased.

Wentzel also confirmed the sad truth that White Headed Vultures have disappeared from the area, mainly due to poisoning. These precious creatures’ brains are used for muti since it is traditionally believed to give wisdom.

Amakhosi is also part of the Cheetah Meta Population plan, through which data is being recorded on the cheetah numbers in South Africa. This has become a very detailed data bank of all the cheetahs in the country and since it is a sink population (one that’s never grown) it’s good to know that South Africa has been seeing growing numbers lately.

5 BIRDS TO SPOT: Blue Wax Bill Yellow-tailed bunting Emerald spotted wood dove Yellow front canary Southern Bubu
Whether you’re keen on frogging, or visiting a destination that invites travellers who are conscious about conservation, Amakhosi is undoubtedly worth the drive.

South African art is making a massive impact on the international art scene and The Leonardo Art Experience is helping drive this wave, thanks to their curated collection of pieces that have been designed specifically for the spaces they adorn. Developers of the building have given local artists a blank canvas and allowed their creativity to run wild. Some of these installations had to be created while the building was being constructed due to their size, which must have been a challenging endeavor for both artists and the construction team. There is an excess of over 800 pieces of artwork throughout the building in both public spaces and in the tastefully decorated suites. Most of these works were created with recycled or sustainable materials. Our favourite pieces are The Ancestor and the accompanying Impact installation at the entrance of the building. The Ancestor is made from over 80 000 brass and stainless steel squares – a truly awe-inspiring masterpiece.

THE LEONARDO Pure class and sophistication

The Leonardo is undoubtable Legacy’s crowning and with good reason. This mixed-use complex offers residents, guests and tenants the ideal environment to mix, work and relax. Our visit to the all-suite hotel was for an ultimate rest and reboot in a luxurious, five-star environment and boy, were we taken care of! It must be noted that the property’s management and service teams are some of the friendliest and best trained we’ve encountered. At The Leonardo, they truly go over and above to make sure that from the moment you walk through the front door, your every need is taken care of with the utmost class and sophistication that a discerning traveller has come to expect. COMPACT SUV s FOR THE WIN

CHOOSE THE VENUE WISELY

The Hyundai Venue (which won Car of the Year in the compact category at the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists’ 2021 Car of the Year competition) seems to be a favourite under the brand’s local range of sports utility and crossover vehicles. In fact, in October, altogether 17 162 Venues have been sold in South Africa since 2019.

Ideal for young couples, families or even singles shopping for a versatile car that’s comfortable in the city, as well as on the open road and off the beaten track, this vehicle is a lovely venue for the road.

According to Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, they’ve also added a rangetopping Venue N Line variant, with an individualised grille and several other bespoke exterior and interior design features to accentuate its status.

The new Venue comes with a perky engine and drivetrain, giving it a distinct road presence, which is exactly what its name suggests. ‘Venue’ refers to a place people want to be seen in and well, this is clearly it.

Apart from its bold, attractive exterior, the Hyundai Venue also comes with an inviting interior with various convenience features, including intuitive controls and forwardthinking design.

Price: R294 900 for the Venue 1.2 Motion (manual) to R449 900 for the Venue 1.0 N Line. *VAT inclusive. 1 www.hyundai.co.za

HOLIDAY EDITION 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 58
Be fun, feisty and forever young in these three vehicles

FEISTY FIRST

While we’re all for discipline and obedience, when it comes to navigating city streets (or dirt roads), we do like to have some fun. The Renault Kiger is certainly one vehicle that does the above quote justice. Once you’re buckled up behind the Kiger’s wheel, safety’s out the door and feistiness comes first.

Not that safety is really out the door, though. In fact, there’s just no reason for you to panic about it as Renault has already ensured that everything is up to scratch. (We can vouch for them since we’ve recently tried out the Kiger’s ABS and witnessed an airbag demonstration).

The Renault Kiger, with its modern, spirited design was launched in South Africa in 2021 and has been turning heads ever since. It’s an affordable, compact SUV that strongly represents the latest design evolution pioneered by the Head of Group Design, Laurens Van Den Acker. He says: “Armed for travel in the urban jungle we also designated it for escape and confront any type of roads with serenity. Kiger has a SUV coupé look, but its long wheelbase promises great habitability and volume on board. Its

‘smart cabin’ has been specially designed to encourage sharing and conviviality.”

Its sporty and muscular SUV styling and a sculpted front end enhances the vehicle’s lively personality. Evidently the higher ground clearance of 205mm and the functional roof bars also add to its charm. Not to mention the front grille with a 3D graphic finish with honeycomb shaped chrome effects and the LED tail lights.

Inside, the Renault Kiger is surprisingly spacious – especially when it comes to boot space – setting a high standard when it comes to load capacity. Furthermore, it also comes with a brand new, quality sound system. The auditorium 3D sound system by Arkamys with eight onboard speakers can automatically adjust sound volume according to the speed of the vehicle, which we think is a rather witty add-on.

Price: From R199 900 for the Kiger Life 1.0L 2yr/30 000km Service Plan to R289 900 for the Kiger Intens 1.0L Turbo CVT 3yr/45 000km Service Plan. *VAT Inclusive. 1 www.renault.co.za

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

What is it they say about first impressions? Well, from the first glance, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro certainly made a lasting impression on us. If you’re constantly up and on the go, this vehicle was designed just for you. The Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, with its bold front face that depicts a crouching tiger, is one of the most advanced compact SUVs out there and it’s packed with much of the latest tech. Think an in-cabin 10.25-inch UHD ultra-clear floating LCD screen, with resolution up to 1920x720.

Similar to the Renault Kiger, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro also comes with a long wheelbase, hence its small body is surprisingly accommodating. Plus, it comes with up to 1100 litres of boot space and 34 additional storing spaces, including a forward-sliding armrest with a large opening angle allowing for a clutter-free ride. H

RIGHT, WHERE YOU NEED TO BE

HOW TO… MAKE YOUR HOME MORE SELLABLE

Adrienne Hersch from Adrienne Hersch Properties says she believes that in South Africa there is no perfect time to sell your home. Still, there are many factors that push people to sell - from expecting a baby and needing a bigger home, to losing a loved one and requiring a smaller space.

HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 62

CHANGE WITH THE SEASON

Humans tend to change with the seasons and so does the property market. As the natural elements change, our behaviours follow. “The weather and school holidays may influence our decisions as we tend to go away in the warmer months and hibernate in the colder months,” says Adrienne.

If you are selling in an area rich in good schools, it might be a good idea to sell your home at the beginning of a school term or school year. Parents would want to secure a new address near their children’s chosen school.

Adrienne adds that spring is always good time to list your home. The seasonal change offers the perfect time to do some spring-cleaning and to get your home in order before putting it on the market.

As the temperatures rise, people become happier and more relaxed, and it is during this time of the year when homeowners should take advantage of the influx of potential buyers. During the summer months, a lot of people tend to get their homes and gardens in tip-top shape for the sunny season. Evidently, it is not only more appealing for family and friends who come to visit, but also for potential buyers. Set the scene and help buyers imagine their future holidays in your home…

PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE

Keep in mind that on average, it takes up to three to four months to sell a house, and another three months to register the property. The reality is that there will be buyers throughout the year. A good, qualified property expert will help you create interest with potential buyers any time of the year.

HOME SELLING TIPS AND TRICKS

While a good price and the right timing might play an important role in selling your home, we’ve gathered some valuable tips on helping the process along:

• Declutter, but be careful not to depersonalise it too much. Remember, buyers are looking for a house to make a home. At the same time, they need to be able to visualise themselves in it, and too many of your personal keepsakes might be a barrier.

• Make sure that the maintenance is up to scratch. A fresh lick of paint, minor repairs and a proper spring-clean will go a long way.

• Maximise the lighting and airiness with clean, open windows, mirrors and lamps in dark corners.

• In winter, light a fire. In summer, open the sliding doors and bake Christmas cookies before the buyers arrive for a viewing, filling the air with holiday scents.

HOLIDAY SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 63
We cannot always control the timing,” says Adrienne, “but make an informed decision before you put your house on the market.”

SAV(F)E TRAVELS

SEASON

Only

FIGHT THE FIERCE FLIGHT FARES

With South Africa’s current predicament when it comes to available flights, you might struggle to find tickets, let alone appropriately priced options. Linden Birns, owner and managing director at Plane Talking, says airlines are currently operating in an inflationary environment.

The situation has been exacerbated by the war between Russia and Ukraine and the escalating oil and fuel prices. Not to mention the impact of the Durban floods earlier this year, as well as the high interest rates and more.

According to Birns, your best bet to get better-priced flight tickets, is to book well in advance. Those last-minute bookings and standby discount tickets which benefited flexible travellers in the past may no longer be available.

WHAT GOES UP, MUST COME DOWN

Unfortunately, the rule of what goes up, must come down does not apply to the travel industry and its economic recovery. In fact, Stephan Ekbergh, Travelstart’s founder says: “As demand for travel goes up, unfortunately prices follow.” Luckily, Travelstart and Mastercard have recently partnered to offer discounted travel to Mastercard holders in Africa, mitigating the soaring costs of travel. If you’re a Mastercard holder, you can save up to 30% on base international and domestic airfares and hotel costs, with the discounts available to all Gold, Platinum, World and World Elite Mastercard cardholders, as well as debit, credit, prepaid and commercial Mastercard cardholders. These discounts are currently available to Mastercard holders in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya. H 1 www.travelstart.co.za/lp/mastercard

TIPS FOR BOOKING A FLIGHT

• Use flight deal search websites to compare prices and stay incognito while searching to prevent cookies from accruing and blocking the lowest pricing.

• Be flexible and consider flying on off-peak days or times.

• Make the most of rewards programmes. Use points built up via your bank or gym membership. Credit card payments should ensure built-in insurance, which can earn you more points.

• Travelling overseas? Look at alternative airports close to your destination.

• Domestic flights are often cheaper than international flights that cover the same distance. Consider crossing borders by rail or bus and then using domestic flights.

• Travel light. Hand luggage is usually free. If you do need extra luggage, book online when buying your ticket. It’s cheaper than paying at the airport.

• Flights with layovers and stopovers are often cheaper. Plus, if you extend your stopover by a few days, you can even visit an additional country!

JustMoney’s Shafeeka Anthony says: “It’s essential to do your homework before parting with your hard-earned cash for the holidays,” and we couldn’t agree more. Before booking your flight, you need to calculate what the entire trip will cost you.
