It’s true what they say, though – rather be scared of standing still than of growing slowly. To grow is to rise and if there was one thing I’ve learned over the past two years, it’s that we are capable of so much more than meets the eye, as long as we keep moving. Keep rowing.

rowth is never comfortable There’s a Latin proverb that says: “If there’s no wind, row.” Well, the Covid-19 storm seems to have calmed down and I am rowing. Because when you row, you grow. It's the science of perseverance. Growth, perseverance, getting up and out from under that dark cloud – these all have one thing in common: It’s never comfortable.

For me, this printed copy of Hello Lifestyle’s launch issue (or the digital version you have downloaded) is proof of the Hello Lifestyle team’s perseverance. While we strongly believe that print is not dead, we have also risen to the challenge of adapting in numerous ways, individually and as a team. This spring issue is therefore an ode to those who continue and aspire to learn and grow; those who rise up to a challenge, keep rowing and persevere. Our spring issue is filled with all things new, fresh, refreshing and inspirational. Things that make you want to rise to the top, be a better person, help, uplift and grow. They say FEAR has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run, or Face Everything And Rise.

Keeping the lights on Amidst rolling blackouts, at Cresta Shopping Centre we do everything in our power to ensure a seamless experience for everyone. Despite loadshedding, rest assured that Cresta is open and trading. We are set up with generators to ensure our businesses can operate through loadshedding and our customers can shop with peace of mind.

Supporting the community that supports us

In our post-pandemic world, supporting local businesses is core to our country’s economic come-back. This is why supporting our local brands is a priority with initiatives like our Halloween Market – designed to drive business for those entrepreneurs hard hit during the pandemic. The market was well supported by our customers and tenants respectively. Showcasing local businesses like Manaba clothing, founded by Sonti Lebopa (a youth from the Growing Champions NGO), Cresta is proud to support these brands and equip them with a platform to promote their businesses. We look forward to supporting more local brands.

Support of local businesses

Q @crestacentre Family and community is everything, and that is at the heart of what Cresta Shopping Centre has to offer. More than a mall, we believe in empowering and supporting the community in which we operate - from our shoppers, tenants, residents, and local NGOs.

This comes to life through our various CSI activities and working with local NGOs. Every year, Cresta Shopping Centre goes all out to support Nelson Mandela Day to encourage society and corporate organisations to give back to their communities in whatever way they can. This year, Cresta Shopping Centre focused on two organisations that help improve the lives of children in and around their community. This included much-needed donations of educational toys and books, stationery, and outdoor play equipment to the Land of Joy Day Care in Diepkloof, Soweto and St Mabels Day Care in Sophiatown.

Life’s a musical ballade

by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied

AFRIKABREDENKAMP#HelloLifestyle

Her presence has a way of lighting up a room. Even just listening to her speak on the radio brings a kind of reassurance that no matter what, it’ll be okay. Still, Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp is not blind to the fact that she is human too and that, although she has responsibilities (at home and on air), she is also allowed to feel down sometimes. For her, it’s about keeping the ballade we call life, balanced.

Elana SPRING 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA16

Like with the pandemic, Elana says we’ve all gained and lost and that we should see life - with its rises and falls - as a musical ballade. “Just because the tones go softer, doesn’t mean that the music is not Inplaying.”theend, it’s all about balancing the ballade of life – the ups and downs – and the way you rise back up again. H Q @elanaafrika

SPRING 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 17

YOU’RE ALLOWED TO FEEL DOWN During the Covid-19 pandemic, Elana hit a low every night. Her concern for her children had snowballed into insomnia. “Just like all the adversities that we’ve experienced in our past, I was scared that this would be something that they would carry with them for life. And that the world has ended.” In that time, she taught her children to pray the ‘Our Father’ for protection. Elana says when she feels down, she feels down. But, then you also need to ask yourself what you’re going to do about it. Elana keeps a mental health diary and makes notes when she feels down to make sure that she is still on the track of good mental health. “No one in their right mind is happy all the time.” No matter what your curse is, Elana believes that it will help you realise your good and your purpose. “I met a mentor long ago that said if there’s a curse, it will become your blessing. It has to. It will.”

Elana

“We must againstdiscriminatingstopsad.It’sanemotion.Feelsad.“

“Choose your moments that you want to rise in. A little rise is also a win. In business they call it a micro-win. Overcome little moments because that’s also your way of rising.”

#IRISE This year’s SPAR Women’s Race’s theme is #IRise. Elana has been running the race for years and she is also one of their ambassadors. “It’s about rising out of a circumstance that you feel is trapping you or holding you back. Our rises look different.” The hashtag means something different to everyone, but it reminds women to tell each other that they’re winning. “We need to support each other, and we need more people to commit to being nice,” says Elana. While the race is for women, “we will run it as Forpeople.”Elana, it’s not just the SPAR Women’s Race, but also the race of life that is about rising. “I think that there were many times in my life that I was rising. I also think to rise doesn’t mean that you stop at a certain point and then go higher. Sometimes you go lower and then rise from that point.” She believes we can rise and be good in the moment.

Home Bru Graft Café is perfect for those energetic Durbanites (and tourists) out exercising before dawn. Home Bru also claims to be a “rad work environment where you’re surrounded by epic humans,” and we can attest to that.

Slightly off the beaten track, it’s located one block away from the main UMhlanga strip. Still, it’s a great place to go for breakfast or lunch, with a menu filled with delicious and healthy options. Pack your daily planner and find a spot on a comfy couch under the canopy to sit and plan out your week. Home Bru has a uniquely South African flavour. Some of our favourites include the tempura-style tofu steamed buns, the beetroot aguachile salad with walnuts and ricotta, and the cauliflower with cumin, capers and sultanas.

Ukko, Bryanston In November last year, Joburg welcomed this hot dining spot to its streets. Ukko brings a sense of tranquillity and style to the upmarket Nicolway Shopping Centre through its calming and natural elements and design. Zioux, Sandton Every ounce of this 400m² showstopper restaurant will cling to your memory bank.

The mood: Paying homage to the 70s, Xioux is opulence meets sophistication, with a purr of seductiveness. Described as the playground of the adventurous, it certainly delivers!

Referred to as a hybrid sport, Padel is a combination of tennis and squash. It is currently viewed as the fastest growing sport in the world. While there are more than 10 million people playing Padel in over 60 countries, it’s only recently that it hit South African shores.

Padel can be played in groups of mixed ages and abilities as your advantage doesn’t lie in strength, technique or serve, but rather in match-craft. With Padel, points are rather won by strategy than by strength. The sport, which is scored like tennis, is mainly played in doubles and players serve underhand. • Look for products promoting reduced water usage, whether in the formulation or during usage.

Dr. Stephan Helary, the founder of Terres d’Afrique says that greenwashing has been common practice since the consumer started shifting to more natural and eco-friendly products. “Brands always try to jump on the bandwagon on trends and many big brands aren’t always very scrupulous about being transparent and Transparencyhonest.” is key The more transparent the brand, the better the chances of it not being blamed for greenwashing. Dr. Helary says regardless of the route a brand chooses - synthetic, combination, purely natural or even organic - it’s all a matter of transparency about what you do, how and why. “The consumer will then make up their mind about what is acceptable for them in terms of clean and sustainability. We need to be better at not making any false claims and misleading the consumer.”

How@terresdafriquecanconsumers identify truly sustainable brands?

What is greenwashing?

• Avoid plastic packaging.

According to Salmari Fourie, Lulu & Marula’s brand manager, greenwashing involves conveying a false message to the consumer, creating the perception that the product or behaviour of a company is more environmentally friendly or sustainable than what it truly is. She says brands often benefit financially from the promotion of more planet or animal by-product friendly options. Claims like “healthier, more natural, chemical free or less wasteful to the environment” are therefore deemed greenwashing if it’s not entirely true.

• Look for brands with minimalist packaging. Additional printed cartons, leaflets and inserts aren’t always recyclable.

The theme of clean and natural beauty has been trending across the globe in recent years, with consumers demanding greener and more sustainable beauty products. This has resulted in companies changing their branding strategies, mission statements and slogans. With that came the uncomfortable challenge of greenwashing. Did you know? “One garbage truck of single use plastic packaging ends up in the oceans every minute.” – Dr Stephan Helary, Terres d’Afrique

Prep your skin for spring

Dr. Juandri Jonck from LifeLAB in Pretoria says it’s the best thing you can do as you prep your skin for spring.

Q

“The biggest mistake we make – even as moms – is to start applying moisturisers on our children’s skin. That equals a dry, dull skin,” says Dr. Jonck. Your skin was made to regenerate itself. By constantly applying moisturiser, you prevent it from shedding and regenerating. Therefore, moisturiser causes your skin to lose its natural ability to produce moisture, making it lazy.

3. Use a day serum with a lot of antioxidants. This helps with free radical damage and UV light damage. If acne is a problem, choose a product that comes with lots of Vitamin C and E.

Here@lifelabmedareDr.Jonck’s suggestions for anyone who wants to prep their skin for spring:

6. Use a retinol serum in the evening. Even younger individuals can use retinol as it helps with both rejuvenation and so-called prejuvenation. Keep in mind that pregnant and breastfeeding women cannot use retinol, as it puts your baby at risk of fetal retinoid syndrome. When you can’t use retinol, opt for an antioxidant-rich serum like the day serum. The vitamin C in these serums is brightening and very good for collagen stimulation.

Did you know? Retinol and sunblock are the only two proven products that help with anti-ageing and age reversal.

4. Always use sunblock. Dermexcel’s tinted SPF contains iron, which increases the level of skin protection. (Read more about this on our blog).

2. Do a daily exfoliation with a glycolic acid wash or gel. Those who struggle with acne rathershould opt for a salicylic acid, as it’s also antiinfective.

If you are used to using a moisturiser in your daily beauty routine, it could take your skin up to three months to get back into regenerating itself. As the transition could be rather frustrating, Dr. Jonck suggests a barrier in the form of hyaluronic acid, which holds back the moisture in your skin. There is also polyglutamic acid, which holds back five times the moisture. If not one of these, opt for a barrier cream like Aquaphor to contain the moisture. It might be better to use this product at night, as it is a little oilier than the other products. H Scan the barcode for pre-spring pampering tips and SPFs worth investing in.

5. Wash your face with an exfoliating glycolic acid facewash again at night.

1. First and foremost: Chuck your moisturiser.

There are so many skin products and procedures out there that it’s often overwhelming. But, have you ever heard a medical practitioner tell you to chuck your moisturiser?

Bruk and James agree that when it comes to optimal physical and mental health, we humans need and thrive on social interaction, routine and human contact. H Q @adsaorgza Q @ignitefitnessglobal “ As a result, weight gain over this time has been common.”

According to Lila Bruk, a registered dietician and spokesperson for the Association for Dietetics in South Africa (ADSA), remote working has had different effects over the past two years.

“For many people, being able to work from home has allowed them to spend more time preparing healthier meals (especially lunch). However, there are also those who have found remote working has resulted in less structure to their day in general, and in terms of their eating specifically.” She says a lack of routine and allocated break times, which a normal day at the office would include, led to more snacking between meals, and emotional eating out of boredom or procrastination.

SPRING 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA36

#HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Unsplash The good, the bad and the ugly

The initial lockdowns broke many people’s fitness routines too, Bruk says, and Ignite Fitness’ Exercise Specialist, Eduan James couldn’t agree more. “People who work from home struggle to keep to a routine. We are creatures of habit and remote work broke those habits,” he says. “People struggled to come back to the gym. Fitness levels plummeted due to a very sedentary lifestyle. Motivation levels and fitness levels definitely decreased, and people struggled to exercise with the same intensity as they had before,” says James.

The fact that South Africans enjoy personal interaction made exercising in front of a screen difficult for many. Ultimately, it’s all about discipline. You need to be determined to keep to your routine. If not, it may influence your fitness and your mental health.

Bruk says in 2020 and 2021 she also saw a dramatic increase in eating disorders and disordered eating among adolescents. “This can be largely attributed to the initial strict lockdowns and the resulting isolation that many experienced. In addition, I have heard from several adolescents that they felt that there was an expectation that they should return to school after the lockdown looking better than before.

Thus, many of them embarked on very restrictive and often unhealthy or potentially dangerous weight loss plans, and very extreme regimens.”

While working from home has been a blessing to many, some also found it hard to adjust to the new daily structure. The question: What does working remotely do to us emotionally, physically and mentally?

Seeing that our spring issue is all about rising out of beencircumstancewhicheverthat’sholdingyouback, it’s only fitting to add Pie-Pacifique KabaliraUwase’s Witnessing to our list of books to read. As a fourteen-year-old boy in Rwanda, this boy (now the founder and director of PEM Afurika) survived war atrocities and left home to stay safe. In this emotional, but rewarding journey of selfdiscovery, you can witness him confront the depths of his traumatic past and reach for his dreams.

South African radio personality, Danny Painter has an impressive career in the local entertainment industry. Today, she is the host of Jacaranda FM’s popular ‘Love Songs with Danny Painter’ show, airing between 7PM and 10PM, Mondays to Thursdays. And, she has a rather interesting hobby… Danny builds project cars with her husband, Philip. They both have a love for cars. Especially the unusual ones. They initially started building project cars for fun. Soon, they had finished a Rat Rod Beetle! “Phil really wanted a Rat Rod, and so he found a beetle that we chopped, rusted, and turned into our Rat Rod. He’s called Rat,” Danny laughs. “He’s been in music videos, and we often take him out on Sundays.”

They’re currently working on a car Danny chose. “I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something that I could paint matte black and make look like a scary vampire car. So, Phil bought me a baby blue 1961 Mercedes Benz Ponton that we are working on. His name is Spider Car. When we fetched him, there was the most enormous rain spider living inside and so, Spider Car it was. The rain spider has since moved (of his own accord), but the name remains.”

Ivy Décor & Design’s Tammy Holmes says there has been a definite shift in consciousness around sustainability and a movement toward being out in nature, having been stuck in our homes for so long. People want nature pods in their homes, and one way in which she helps create that, is by including stack doors into her designs. These allow the outside to instantly become the inside and vice versa. Why bring in green? Holmes has done a lot of research on the colour green and found that people literally breathe out when they see it. For her, bringing the outdoors indoors using plants is a costeffective way to soften lines and to bring in a touch of femininity. “It’s whimsical and it creates interest.”

Working from home has brought about various new trends, including that of bringing the outdoors indoors. In fact, working from home saw many people become plant obsessed overnight. When it comes to home décor and design, biophilic design is clearly here to stay.

Tammy’s five tips for bringing green into your home

4. Buy plants from an open-air nursery rather than a shop where they have been airconditioned for hours.

Instead of doing cut roses, I do rose plants that one day they can plant themselves.”

• It’s a gift that keeps on giving.

5. If your home already feels cluttered, you’ll have to declutter before bringing in plants. “Remove everything that doesn’t work for you, reupholster, upcycle – get to a space you can work with, and then start adding accent pieces like plants and mirrors,” says Holmes.

Apart from suggesting big pots or baskets with established trees like olive trees, palms and fiddle-leaf Figs, Holmes says she’s also obsessed with roses. “I always put them in.

Kira Bianca Louw - 28 years old Heritage to me represents something invaluable. It’s the golden thread that tethers our past, present and future together. Red Desert Nature Reserve

It’s odd to imagine a desert amidst KwaZuluNatal’s multiple water masses. Yet, the Red Desert - also known as the world’s smallest desert and often referred to as a mini version of the Arizona Desert - is located a mere 10km West from Port Edward. The internationally protected heritage site is certainly peculiar, with some saying it’s the site of an alien landing. But in truth, the site dates back to the 1800s when a Zulu tribe with a vast herd of stolen cattle was located here. The area became severely overgrazed and eventually the wind eroded it, causing desertification. There is a trail that can be done by foot or mountain bike and apart from the very interesting history of this desert, the views across the Umtamvuna Estuary are beautiful.

Teach your kids to grow #HelloJoburgstuff by Bianca Spinner Images: Supplied In fact, #HelloRecommends that you dedicate a space for kids to get dirty at home. With the global Work from Home (WFH) phenomenon, it’s probably practical to set up a corner for the kids where they’re allowed to make a mess. Choose the corner carefully, though. It should preferably be one with a door that you can merely close after a long workday, and walk away. By setting this up, you will be able to deal with all the screaming distractions. It’s the perfect, appropriate physical activity for the whole family.

@Home sells some suitable planter pieces for herb gardens at home. With this, you can surround your family with some of your favorite things like plants, pots and planters. Or, invest in this boho décor essential. The ceramic planter features an elongated neck adorned with half-moon handle detail. Buy one per child and have them plant some peppermint leaves, rocket, basil, rosemary or even red, yellow and green peppers.

You can also visit your nearest nursery and buy some seeds, soil and everything plantrelated. They should have all the basic utensils, including colourful mini spades, forks and spoons for the kids’ own little garden. The bonus is that many nurseries come with trinkling fountains and jungle gyms, so it’s a win-win!

For Gauteng-based little gardeners If you’re in Gauteng and want to get out and teach your kids about gardening, we recommend visiting The Herb Farm & Bistro in Midrand. It is an educational play facility where the aim is to expose children to the wonderful world of plants and the use of herbs in their daily lives.

From executives to entrepreneurs, these hotels should suffice.

Curiocity is definitely one of the most unique properties on the Atlantic Seaboard. The building is set up as a hostel with all the common areas and facilities one would expect. However, there are also numerous room options available for solo travellers, families or couples wanting a little privacy.

There is something truly special about cohabiting in a space with people from different walks of life. Conversing about unique topics, learning from cultures with diverse opinions and hearing a cacophony of languages is what makes good travel experiences so unforgettable. This type of adventure is not possible in a traditional hotel, but at Curiocity - also referred to as an African hybrid hotel - it’s the norm. Experiences are at the forefront of what Curiocity is all about. Their entire philosophy is to help guests enjoy Cape Town from a local’s perspective. With multiple weekly events like their street art walks and beer and braai nights, no guest will ever feel left out.

If you’re the type of business traveller that enjoys a lock-up-and-go experience with luxurious rooms, then this property is just what you’ve been looking for.

Luckily, even when the weather is bad, there is ample to do in the area. We hopped onto the Franschhoek Wine Tram and explored some of the wine farms in the region. Our first stop was the elegant Grande Provence, where we strolled through their gardens and enjoyed an Angels Tears wine tasting by the fire. We also paid a visit to Eikenhof Winery – a farm that still makes a Semillon from 120-yearold vineyards. Franschhoek itself is a lovely town to explore too, with numerous quaint little coffee shops including Terbodore Coffee Roasters in Huguenot Street. H Q @camp.vanoe

The king-sized bed was beautifully made with a designer-style base and a quilted headboard – obviously the tent’s statement piece. And, the bathroom was enormous with a large shower, stylish taps and clever canvas detail. Since the weather wasn’t too welcoming, we mostly had to hibernate beside the indoor fireplace. We can hear you ask: “What tent has a fireplace?” Well, Camp Canoe’s tents do and it came in quite handy! When the weather allowed, we hopped into the hot tub

Proteas welcomed us as we took the winding road toward camp. We were told by many that the Cape would be warm during our visit, but the berg wind seemed to disagree. Luckily, we had an afternoon to spare as we arrived earlier than planned, and we got to walk up to the viewpoint from where mountain bikers and hikers alike depart on various Boschendal trails. As the clouds came rolling in over the mountains, we headed back to our tent where the hot tub was already warming up. Tent seven was kitted out to perfection. In fact, we soon agreed that the Camp Canoe experience was much more than just glamping.

• Do proper research on estate rules and offerings. It must fit your family’s lifestyle requirements.

Things to consider when preparing your home for three generations under one roof. There’s been an increased shift toward multi-generational living - various generations living together under one roof, but also different generations living in one estate.

Looking to buy into a multi-generational estate?

Q livingThe@lewgeffenssothebysrealtychallengesofamulti-generationalspace

• An off-grid solution is a must.

If you’re in the market for multi-generational living in an estate like Northlands Property Group’s Avianto Estate in Muldersdrift, Estate Living’s CEO, Louise Martin suggests you consider the following:

• You may ask for the minutes of the latest homeowners meeting.

• Additional rooms or options to add additional rooms as your children grow older and need their own rooms.

• Wheelchair access (or at least the option to adapt).

• The estate should be fibre ready.

• A bathroom that is accessible to all. Think modern-style wet room with a low-slip tiled floor instead of a small, enclosed shower and separate bath.

• Sustainability options are important.

According to Yael Geffen, CEO of Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty, “multi-generational living can be a very smart fiscal move as costs become more efficient when shared, and it’s also a very practical way for generations to help each other out, whether it be providing a home or sharing a rung on the property ladder.”

• Less floor and ceiling level changes, as they are likely to compromise what you’re able to do with the building in the future.

Multi-generational living

SPRING 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA58

• A combination of social spaces. There must be space for everyone to gather, but it is equally important to ensure that everyone has their own individual space too. Q @avianto_estate Q @estateliving_sa Scan the QR code to read more about why buying into a multi-generational estate in South Africa is not a bad idea.

Putting three generations under one roof comes with its challenges. Therefore, it’s important to look at your home and its location objectively. Decisions around your home’s living spaces are crucial as it becomes more difficult to make changes after you’ve moved in. Also, because your home might now comprise of younger, as well as older individuals, it’s important to focus on safety, mobility and access for all. Infants become toddlers and eventually grow into teenagers. Grandparents may be strong when they move in, but their health might deteriorate, making them more dependent. You therefore need to keep your family’s changing needs in mind. You might also come across challenges like conflicts between grandparents and their adult children over parenting. Key things to look for when buying a multi-generational home

• You are allowed to ask for the estate’s latest financial statements.

• Remember that living in an estate doesn’t exempt you from conflict with neighbours and other homeowners. People will always have different viewpoints. It’s about how it’s managed.

• Clear circulation spaces.

2. Boulders Beach in Simon's Town is home to the adorable African penguin waddlers. This is a protected area in the Cape Peninsula and the beach is perfect for swimmers too.

3. Cape Vidal on the Elephant Coast in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is also worth a mention. As a UNESCO World Heritage site which stretches across 220 glorious kilometres from the Mozambique border to Maphelane, the park protects five distinct ecosystems at the Southern end of Lake St Lucia.

5. Muizenberg Beach’s iconic huts are also a must-see, especially since they’ve been getting a well-deserved a facelift! Repairs have been well underway since 2020 and apart from visiting the site and showing support, beach lovers can also make donations to help Muizenberg save their beach huts www.beachhuts.org.za.on H If you’re a beach bum like us, these top South African beach picks might come in handy while planning your next holiday by the coast...

Cryptocurrency blockchains are created by transactions between cryptocurrency holders, similar to a ledger that a bank would create. Each transaction contains specific information such as to-and-from wallet addresses, transaction dates and times, coin types transacted and the value of Crypto exchanged. Why opt for Crypto?

Cryptocurrency is defined as decentralized digital money designed to be used over the internet, and it’s depicted in the form of coins. At the date of publication, the two most popular coins were Bitcoin (BTC), trading at $20,954.80, and Ethereum (ETH), trading at $1,223.14. Trading with these coins is secure and vetted by technology called blockchain.

Adding to the legitimacy of this blockchain technology are governments from El Salvador and The Central African Republic that have recently adopted Bitcoin as legal tender. Even Tesla is holding a few Bitcoin on their balance sheet.

A quick breakdown

Cryptocurrency. Now, that’s a buzz word that has been dominating the airwaves lately. In fact, many Crypto fans will insist that Cryptocurrency is going to be the dominant medium of exchange in the not-toodistant future.

It is believed that the technology was initially created for people to interact anonymously via a wallet address. However, due to international government pressure, exchanges now require identification and proof of address to open an account. This is a positive improvement in the industry as many criminals have been using cryptocurrencies for nefarious motives.

It’s very important to always do your research before investing in cryptocurrency, especially because this is a new technology and there is so much hype around the innovation. Don’t get caught up in the digital noise, as this might only confuse you and lead to bad decisions. YouTube has many interesting channels that distribute high quality content around cryptocurrency.
