little lone seed once fell between a rock and a hard place. After the first spring rain, it started to grow. First, a small green leaf. Then another. The sun gently baked its little leaves, giving it the energy required to grow. Step-bystep it grew until it finally reached the budding stage. Then, one day, it bloomed. A bright yellow flower with petals like rays of sunlight stood proud in the cracks of the rock beside the road. People walked past the little flower daily. Many didn't even notice. One day, a young girl spotted it. She stopped and stared at its simple, yet incredible beauty. Deep

within her, something changed. Her spirit felt happy and alive. Somehow, amidst its hardships, that little fighter flower grew into exactly what it was meant to be - a bit of sunshine on a cloudy day.

Spring is a time that is reminiscent of growth, new life and colour. It brings with it a sense of hope, but also a sense of gratitude after having survived the winter.

It is time, don't you think? Time to bloom.

It all starts with a little seed. Depending on where it fell, or where it was carefully planted, and how much water it receives, it will grow into what it was meant to become.

No matter where you were planted or which hand you were dealt, let this spring be your reminder to bloom.

Mampofu Oros

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht

Images: Hanneri de Wet Photography

Venue: Olives & Plates Ellipse, Waterfall

Wardrobe: Informal: Old Khaki. Formal: Oros Mampofu

Valiantly veering toward victory

Since 2015 Oros has gained an impressive presence, not only in the South African entertainment sphere, but also on social media, with more than a million followers on Instagram alone. His latest appearance on television is on the recently launched Afrikaans medical series, Hartklop, screening on kykNET. Now, he is involved in the filming of yet another project, while he is also working on some other business ventures, which we’re all bound to know more about come the end of the year.

FAMILY SHAPES THE MAN

Oros Mampofu is much more than just a businessman, actor and content creator, though. He’s also a passionate family man who has two daughters, Aarya (4) and Azaria (9 months) with his life partner, Bianca Carmicheal. In addition to God, family is the most important aspect in life, he says. “I believe that true purpose is tethered together with community. There is no stronger community than family… True happiness lies in the family that we choose to take care of and by which we are taken care of.”

Oros grew up in Umtata in the Eastern Cape, former president Nelson Mandela’s valley. He finished school in Blouberg, Cape Town and later moved to Joburg. “I grew up in a family of five children,” he says, grateful about a strong family unit and a mother and father that took good care of them. “I want to be the same father to my children than what my father was to me.” Oros also has a twin brother, Mkhokheli Prince Mampofu, who works in finance. Being a twin is something he says shaped him in a unique way. “I think the thing I appreciate most about it is the fact that my brother and I were always joined by the hip. There is no greater bond. The

bond you have with your mother and father is strong, but there is something about being born with someone onto this planet, wearing the same clothes, talking the same way, seeing the same mannerisms that you have being expressed by this individual… It’s amazing to know that there is someone that has your back no matter what,” the actor says.

And so, the people we grow up with help to shape us into the people we become. We continue to grow as individuals as we engage with other people, though and Oros’ recent experience as a character in Hartklop is proof.

THE CHALLENGE ÍS THE REWARD

With his latest gig, Hartklop, Oros had to act in Afrikaans – a language he can’t really speak. In addition to that, the drama’s narrative was quite intense. “It was very hard… I had to learn how to face things - tonality, pronunciation, words in Afrikaans, but also medical terms, which are difficult whether you’re Afrikaans or not. But, it was a great experience.” Oros says he learned a lot while filming the series and that it was by far one of the hardest, but also the most worthwhile challenges he has ever had to face in his acting career.

AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2023 l hellolifestyle.co.za 11
We had just settled in at Olives & Plates Ellipse in Joburg’s Waterfall development when he came swinging in. “I’m a hugger,” he said with a smile as he leaned in to greet us. We were all meeting in between meetings - halfway between Pretoria and Joburg - and amidst the smell of freshly brewed coffee, we quickly snapped some pics. Oros Mampofu might have instantly climbed to fame after joining the cast of SABC1’s Skeem Saam in 2015, but here, at Olives & Plates, we chatted like old friends. It’s a thing huggers do, we suppose.
“If you don’t sacrifice for what you want in life, then what you want becomes the sacrifice.”

For him, the most rewarding part was the most difficult part - going into production, not knowing if he could pull it off and later being flabbergasted at what he has achieved. “I was very doubtful, very scared. I wasn’t sure if I could really do it,” he says. That’s what made it so rewarding in the end. “When I pulled it off, it made me realise that I was more capable of accomplishing things that I doubted myself in than I thought. That, for me, was a great lesson in the power of perseverance, the power of courage and the power of just moving boldly in each step towards the greater goal.”

LEARNINGS FROM SET

Hartklop’s storyline is not aligned to one narrative only. In fact, according to Oros, “everyone is a lead in their own right; the centre point to the narrative in one way or another at some point in the series”. This, in effect, came with a number of characters that one got to know quite well.

“What I learned is that everyone has their perspective. One person’s hero is another person’s enemy. Everyone’s pain is justified in some way and everyone’s rejoicing sometimes comes at the detriment of another,” says Oros. “It becomes a learning curve. Sometimes we think that there are walls that stand between us, preventing us from understanding and having reason to care for each other. Yet, those walls aren’t as thick as we might think. If only we’re willing to break through or jump over, we will realise that we have much more in common than what we thought.”

MEMORIES THAT LAST

In addition to being a hugger, Oros clearly also values sentiment and his love for people is tangible. During the production process of Hartklop, it was inevitable that the cast would make memories. “There were always moments of laughter,” he recalls. “There were always humour, pranks here and there.

The energy was always incredible – something I miss today.”

While he loved working with everyone on Hartklop’s cast, his experience in working with fellow actress, Leandie du Randt certainly left lasting memories. “I fell in love with Leandie du Randt’s energy and her vibe. She reminds me of my big sister, Lunathi Mampofu. She just has this whole laidback, cool vibe, but she’s also so loving and caring. It was an energy so familiar to me and I enjoyed that. I really thought she was the coolest person on earth throughout the whole production,” he laughs. He also highlights actor, Dawid Louw’s serious demeanour, which he soon came to realise is just a front for the teddy bear he truly is. “A God-fearing man who just wants to do his best and live in peace,” is how he describes Louw. “Now I miss them even more, just talking about it,” he says.

HERITAGE HITS HOME

One’s heritage has a way of guiding one’s thinking and it’s no less the same with Oros Mampofu, who is proudly South African, proudly Xhosa.

With a number of influential leaders hailing from the Umtata, Eastern Cape region, one can’t help but wonder if it was something in the water that made these individuals - some in the political sphere, others in entertainment - follow their dreams with such determination. Oros says while it might be a lovely story to tell, it is much more likely that it was the challenges they faced that made them rise to greatness. “Sometimes adversity can be a good motivator,” he says. “I faced very difficult challenges growing up. I was bullied, I was too old, I felt like I wasn’t the smartest tool in the shed, I always felt like an underdog in a sense. That helped me to grab hold of the truth and realities that I think overwhelm many people… As I grew up, the pain that a lot of people endured as

they grew up, were things that I had already become accustomed to, which made it a little easier to venture forward.”

Now, his story; his heritage and his position as an influencer and actor, comes with great responsibility. For him, it is rooted in his personal conscience. “I feel that my responsibility and my message is unity. My message is integration, family and cohesion. It is learning, growth, personal development. Perseverance through difficult times.”

According to Oros you are at your happiest when you live passionately while venturing toward your goal. While the goal becomes the crown that is placed upon your head once you’ve reached it, that feeling of fulfilment won’t last forever. “You have to keep growing, persevering, keep encouraging yourself to become the best version of yourself,” he says. “That’s the message I really believe the world needs to start connecting to. If we could connect to that, great things could happen for all of us.” A good message for all South Africans (and the world) as we celebrate Heritage Month this September.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE

There is no doubt that Oros Mampofu is a go-getter. His goal is to become a global creator within the next few years, but only after he has freed himself financially. He wants to be able to enjoy his passion and love for acting, serving people, speaking to people and giving back, free from financial debt. Then, the plan is to become an executive producer on his own shows, which he claims will not only be well-known and well-received in Africa, but all over the world.

AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2023 l hellolifestyle.co.za 12
“I believe that success is desire, but also determination to persevere through difficulty, because the true test to whether you want it or not, won’t come in your passion to want it, but in what you are willing to withstand to get it.”

“I really want to do great things. I want to impact; I want to empower people. I want to be a voice to the voiceless. I want to be confidence to the fearful. Give people a reason to see that if someone like me – who was two years behind at school, who never did sport, who thought he was dumb, who only learned to read properly later in his twenties – can do it, they can too.”

BEND BACKWARDS TO PAY IT FORWARD

This kind of empowerment ideally starts with younger children – something Oros is also passionate about. “If we take care of our children, we take care of our future,” he says. When it comes to South Africa’s education system, he believes there is a lack of communal activities, with sports being instrumental in teaching children valuable life lessons. It teaches them to work together and that competition and the personal growth around that, is not a bad thing. Looking back on his own journey, Oros says that had he been taught self-

confidence, he would have gained a lot from it. Interpersonal skills and the teaching of more additional languages are two other aspects he highlights when he talks about gaps in the education system. “It is mainly for us to integrate with different nations for the sake of trade, business, networking and connection,” he explains. Furthermore, he strongly believes that now is the time to teach children about the fourth industrial revolutions and the systems required. “I think we can move faster to integrate with that.”

FROM ONE HUGGER TO ANOTHER

Oros’ message to South Africans is this: “Many times, we take for granted the opportunity and the time we have to pursue the experience and the life we want. In taking that for granted, we lose the opportunity to live out our greatest dreams. Move valiantly, confidently and boldly, but most importantly, unapologetically towards the life and the experience that you know you’re destined for. If you do that, great things and a lot of magic can come to light.” H

SKIN Functional

If you’re a blossoming mother-to-be this spring, your skin is bound to undergo some changes. We’re not talking stretch marks only. We’re talking Melasma (dark patches across your forehead, nose and cheeks) and even pregnancy acne. While many of these blemishes and other skin changes that arise during pregnancy may resolve postpartum, you could still have breakouts, dry skin or other skin problems after pregnancy.

Hormonal swings and changes can cause breakouts and acne, as well as pigmentation. There could even be glandular and structural changes in your skin and sometimes, pre-existing skin conditions can get worse (or sometimes improve) during pregnancy.

Kevin Khosa from SKIN

Functional says ingredients that are safe to use during this time of transition are mineral sunscreens, benzoyl peroxide, Niacinamide, Bakuchiol, Azeliac acid and Vitamin C. “These ingredients can help with common pregnancy side effects like Melasma and acne.”

LAMELLE’S NEW FORTEVE RANGE

If you’re struggling with dry, sensitive skin as you come out of winter, this might just be what you are looking for. Lamelle Pharmaceuticals have done years of intensive research, proving that replenishing the stratum corneum (the outermost layers of your epidermis) is not just about adding lipids. In fact, according to them, these lipids need to be arranged and aligned in a specific pattern to have the optimal effect.

Forteve is Lamelle’s skin barrier repair range, which uses a patented pseudocermide which mimics the unique properties of a healthy epidermal lipid by-layer. WHAT IS SKIN FLOODING?

According to Lamelle Research Laboratories’ medical director and co-founder, Bradley Wagemaker, many of our winter skincare routines equate to the recent TikTok craze known as skin flooding. The main benefits of skin flooding are said to be hydration and more hydration. Ultimately, skin flooding comes down to what Wagemaker describes as “layering skin care products to provide deeper hydration with more effective and long-lasting results.” He suggests starting your skincare routine with thinner, easily absorbed products, and then slowly building up to thicker products providing ultimate hydration. His recommended skin flooding routine for those struggling with sensitive, dry and dehydrated skin would include:

Step 1: Gentle Cleanser that moisturises and avoids stripping and drying out the skin.

Step 2: Include a weekly treatment mask that focuses on hydrating the skin.

Step 3: Apply a topical probiotic, which will enhance the normal skin cell function from increasing hydration to the skin to reducing cell-damaging enzymes. This will make the skin less prone to irritation.

Step 4: Moisturise with a rich cream base. (Many might argue that moisturisers make the skin lazy, though, so be sure to do your research and know your skin.)

SKNLOGIC Repair

Did you know that your white blood cells create HOCI (Hypoclorous Acid) which attacks invading pathogens, breaking down the cell walls before destroying unhealthy invaders? Outside of the body, HOCI can kill dangerous micro-organisms, protecting your skin against bacteria, viruses and fungi. It’s basically your skin’s first line of defence. Hence, spraying it onto your skin offers your skin the extra backup it needs when it comes to protecting itself. Furthermore, it also has restorative properties that help repair damaged skin and it can help prevent scar formation.

SKNLOGIC recently launched a Renew Mist (Hypocholrous Light) and a Repair Mist (Hypochlorous Plus). The Renew Mist can be used daily, while the latter can be used on targeted areas.

Elizabeth Arden

Elizabeth Arden pioneered the skincare industry with the introduction of Ceramide Capsules in 1990. It was the first of its kind, bio-engineered, skin-identical ceramides available in a single-dose capsule. Now, the brand has introduced the new gold standard of skin barrier repair: Advanced Light Ceramide Capsules, suitable for combination and oily skins. The serum absorbs quickly and strengthens the skin barrier, refines pores and rebalances skin complexion. Key ingredients include phytocermides, cyclopeptides and hemisqualine.

Whether you’re looking to change your skin hydration habits, or whether you’re in search of a product that will make you glow this spring, there certainly is something for everyone. H

TRAIN BECAUSE YOU LIKE IT

While weight loss, toning and strength are all valid reasons to train, should the main reason to stay fit not rather be to be able to enjoy life to the full?

There are many reasons why exercising and staying fit are important. While looking slim and toned might be the number one motivator for many, we have found that there are other better reasons for you to start or continue training. There is also no reason, whatsoever, for you to stop enjoying life to lose weight. We believe in eating that soft serve and enjoying that Friday night pizza, but also in keeping the balance. We have long been looking for a gym – or rather a safe fitness space – with the same mantra.

We’ve all felt uncomfortable, sometimes even intimidated, in a traditional gym before. Many of us have kicked off a fitness journey, feeling uncertain and unequipped. It’s also often a challenge to get to a point where you feel confident with every piece of

Have we been training for all the wrong reasons all this time?

gym equipment, which is why many of us often tend to rather just stick to the treadmill and a set of sit-ups.

Willow Way Fitness has changed that for us, though. It’s a gym that allows you to not only go at your own pace, but also reach the potential you probably never even knew you had. Plus, they do fitness in a sustainable way, allowing you to still enjoy the good stuff

that life has to offer. They won’t judge if you come back from a weekend filled with heartwarming meals with friends and family. In fact, they encourage it. You might even get a fist pump (after you’ve completed a set of Spanish squats).

A big plus for training with Willow Way Fitness, is the group classes they offer. While some people prefer training on their own, others need that motivation and a feeling of camaraderie to kick off their fitness journey. There are also professional coaches on the floor all the time while you train, and whether you prefer training with your own body weight or heavier weights, they teach you the best movements, help you plan your workouts and even assist with nutrition for you to reach your personal fitness goals. While the gym is filled with some of the best gym equipment, there is also ample space and opportunity for you to train with your own bodyweight and build your strength from there.

In a matter of months, training has become a lifestyle rather than just another chore to fit into our day. It’s become something that we don’t want to miss – a fulfilling and enjoyable hour in our day where we get to test our limits and explore our abilities.

In the end, a healthy lifestyle is what it’s all about. We would like to keep up with our

kids as they grow up, be strong as we grow old and as a bonus, also look good on the beach! In fact, since we’ve started training with Willow Way Fitness, we’ve even started considering challenging ourselves to enter a race or two…

Furthermore, our fitness journey has also been filled with a whole new bunch of people who make us feel welcome and part of something. It’s a space where you not only get fit, but also fit in. H

THE CHALLENGE OF CREATING

Many

The notion of transformation is endemic to the ceramics-making process. There is no guarantee of what the end result will be –something that adds magic to the process and makes the artform so unique.

‘An Act of Faith’ - a specially curated ceramics exhibition - is currently underway at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch and it’s one not to be missed. Working with ceramics is part sorcery, part artistry and part faith. With it being such an unpredictable medium to work with, the outcomes are often completely different to what the ceramist might have predicted.

Christian Buchner is one of the artists whose work is currently being showcased at the Spierbased exhibition, which runs until 23 October 2023. He says: “While every medium affords unique possibilities, ceramics – with their arcane workings in the firing process –bewitch.”

Unpredictability and uncertainty aren’t the only challenges when working with ceramics, though. In fact, the main reason for Tamlin Blake, the Chief Curator at Spier Art Trust, to have organised this exhibition was because of the unusually small number of ceramics exhibited at the annual Ceramics South Africa exhibition in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape. “It was shocking because there were very few pieces being exhibited,” Blake says. “Part of it was due to

Sometimes, faith is all you’ve got

Covid, of course, but frequent loadshedding was also an issue.” Ultimately, artists working with ceramics currently find it hard to practise their craft due to various unpredictable factors. In support of these artists, Spier Arts is giving them an opportunity to showcase their work to a broader market within South Africa through the And Act of Faith Exhibition.

All the ceramic creations featured in exhibition tell a story. It’s also interesting to note that some of the featured artists have prioritised working with recycled clay, repurposed from pre-loved creations. Others have searched rivers, dams and farflung farms to gather their own clay by digging, processing and experimenting with this ‘wild clay’ as featured artist, Mark Dodd calls it. This process resonates with Spier’s regenerative business and sustainability principles.

Whether it was made from wild or recycled clay, the pieces on display are sure to impress with many a story to be told. As with all ceramics, functionality is key. Therefore, many of the pieces exhibited will also serve a hint of practicality.

MAKE HIKING YOUR HOBBY

FOR A BALANCED LIFESTYLE

Apart from being a popular pastime activity, hiking is also a wonderful way to stay fit. It’s one of those hobbies that doesn’t need much in order for you to get started, and at the same time, it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Studies have even shown that walking in nature yields numerous mental health benefits too, which could aid in reducing the risk of depression. Furthermore, it is also a fun activity that the whole family can engage in – from young

kids who need to get rid of that extra energy, to older people who prefer low-impact activities. It’s without a doubt a good hobby to tap into, if you ask us.

Louis Vuitton recently launched the book, Louis Vuitton, Skin: The Architecture of Luxury. The book was published by Assouline and takes readers on a world tour of the Maison’s most distinctive stores. These include São Paulo, Seoul, Miami and Mexico City among others, with the book visiting locations that collectively form what author Paul Goldberger calls “the most radical thinking of the concept of brand identity in our time.”

November will see sixteen days of activism for no violence against women and children again this year. The United Nations campaign takes place annually on 25 November and on 10 December, we celebrate International Human Rights Day. In light of these important events, this important and well-researched book comes highly recommended. It serves in creating awareness, with a true, unsanitised story of how devastating gender-based violence is in the lives of victims, dead and alive. Written by Dr Nechama Brodie - a journalist, author and academic – the book explores decades of brutal domestic violence and coercive control and it examines women’s changing rights and current legal protections.

KATIE MOHAMED AND LYNN FORBES LAUNCH A PODCAST

With women in their 40s and 50s going through so many changes in a short space of time, it’s concerning that there is still little, if any dialogue around life as a mature woman. Katie Mohamed refers to it as ‘Invisible Woman Syndrome.’ “When women enter mid-life, we often seem to slip into the background,” she says. “As if our youth is what made us relevant. And that’s just not true. A life of experience has made us more relevant than ever.” Many attended the launch of Katie and Lynn Forbes’ Outspoken Owls podcast, a new podcast centered around life as a middle-aged woman. “What this is, is something authentic,” said Lynn Forbes, “and something that’s not only relatable to middleaged women, but to everyone.” The show released its first two episodes on Spotify early in August and clearly, there’s a lot to say!

NEWS AND NUANCES FROM THE WORLD OF WINE AND SPIRITS

The past few months have seen a lot of happenings when it comes to your favourite tipples. From new vintage releases and brand-new wine bars to interesting flavours and great wins on the wine front.

COOPER WINE BAR

DEETLEFS STONECROSS PINOTAGE ROSÉ

Located in the beautiful Breedekloof, Deetlefs Wine Estate is the second oldest wine estate in South Africa under ownership of the same family. It was established in 1833 and celebrated 200 years of exitance in 2022. Its Stonecross Pinotage Rosé 2022 was rewarded Gold by the Gilbert & Gaillard International Wine Awards 2022, as well as by the Rosé Wine and Spirits Challenge 2022. Needless to say, this wine is what you’d want by your side this spring. Apart from its beautiful, subtle rose gold colour, it also comes with alluring aromas of strawberries, sweet cherries, nectarines and candy floss on the nose. On the palate, you can expect a strawberry sorbet entry and a surprisingly salivating salty finish.

Q @deetlefswineestate

July saw the launch of a new wine bar in Cape Town and we are stoked! It’s the sister (or brother?) bar of Jozi’s well-known Mr Pants Wine Bar, which is also often referred to as South Africa’s smallest wine bar. Located in Parliament Street, Cooper Wine Bar is the hottest and hippest wine bar to pop into right about now. They are open Wednesdays to Saturdays between 16:00 and 22:00. P.S. No need for reservations. First come, first serve.

MOËT & CHANDON UNVEILS ITS GRAND VINTAGE 2015

The House of Moët & Chandon has recently unveiled its 76th vintage. It was made from grapes harvested in the late summer of 2015, telling the story of bright light and summer heat. In many ways, 2015 was a year of awakening, brought about by the consciousness of a warming climate and its impact on the Champagne region. Cellar Master, Benoit Gouez says: “It is not a ‘summary’ of the year, but rather my interpretation of what the year represented. Like a photographer who frames a shot, I select the wines that will ultimately compose the final blend.”

The Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage 2015 was born in a year of sharp contrasts. It’s a ripe, tender and enveloping champagne.

GALJOEN

SERVING SEAFOOD SUSTAINABLY

Galjoen Restaurant is making waves, standing proud in Cape Town’s historic District Six. Here, you won’t find the SASSI red-list Galjoen on the menu, nor will you find imported seafood. In fact, restaurateurs Neil Swart and Anouchka Horn place emphasis on sustainable consumption of fish at this new eatery.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Galjoen is South Africa’s national fish. The marine fish’s scientific name, Coracinus capensis refers to its black colour when found in rocky areas. Coracinus means raven or black coloured. The fish blends in with its environment, turning a silver-bronze colour when in sandy areas.

Headed by chef Isca Stoltz, the Harrington Street-based sister-restaurant of Belly of the Beast is one of the latest dining destinations in Cape Town. Galjoen is an

ode to its namesake’s characteristics of being adaptable. It brings with it a distinct, nautical feel, with shell-like ornaments hanging overhead that make for impressive ceiling detail, while dimmed lights aid in creating a warm, intimate atmosphere.

A set tasting menu allows the team to focus on every element on the plate. We savoured every dish, considering and contemplating the intricacies of carefully combined ingredients. While you have the option to pair each dish with a specially curated wine, we responsibly opted for a bottle of wine for the table since it was a weeknight. Lucky for us, the wine list boasts brilliant local wines, so our bottle of Marras Los Tros Chenin Blanc served each dish well.

During our visit, the ever-evolving tasting menu included eleven courses. Dinner kicked off with Yellowfin Tuna coupled with a sesame ginger emulsion, wasabi oil and a homemade ponzu dressing, as well as Fresh

Saldanha Bay Oysters with tigers’ milk, red onion, marinated cucumber salad, lime and spekboom. This was followed by three-hour braised False Bay Octopus slices, served with seawater flatbread, a delicious octopus marmite, and a kelp salad. We also indulged in an Abalone roll, followed by a fragrant green curry with tender pan-fried squid, toasted cashew nuts, crispy squid and a coriander salad. Galjoen’s fine dining take on Tjip & Dip was a welcome inclusion on the menu too. It boasted flaked smoked snoek, labneh, pickled and charred masala onion, crispy curry leaves, curry oil, smoked snoek brandade, shiso leaves and crispy potato skins. A lemon sorbet served as a delightful palette cleanser before we dove into the Saldanha Bay Mussel Ramen, after which we had the Hilton Blue – La Petit France, including Hilton blue aerated Catalan, a crispy phyllo and hazelnut roll and spiced eucalyptus honey. Finally, an Earl Grey and vanilla Panna Cotta with clemengold sherbet, as well as Banoffee Petit Fours with braaied banana marshmallow had us utterly content.

Galjoen keeps things local and does things on a smaller scale, hence bookings are essential. H

TIME OUT MARKET CAPE TOWN

Chef Peter Tempelhoff’s Ramenhead, Chefs Anwar Abdullatief and Yolani

Abraham’s new concept Barakat, Matt Manning’s Culture Wine Bar and Eugene Smith’s YARD Pizza are but some of the culinary gems of Cape Town that have been confirmed for the Time Out Market Cape Town happening later this year. Taking place at the V&A Waterfront, this event will bring the best of the city together under one roof. That includes food, drinks and cultural experiences. It will feature thirteen home-grown and local chefs and restaurateurs, three bars and one stage and people will get to gather around communal tables and enjoy a mix of authentic, proudly South African and global cuisine. CEO of Time Out Market, Sandy Hayek says: “To curate Time Out Market Cape Town’s lineup, we have tested and tasted a lot of food in the city to uncover the best home-grown talents – and then we have invited the very best to join and we couldn’t be more proud that such outstanding chefs and restaurateurs have accepted our invitation to join Time Out Market. They really are the best of the city and together will represent the city’s fantastic food scene, making Time Out Market Cape Town a place where you can get a true taste of the city.”

FYN RESTAURANT

The famous Cape Town restaurant, FYN, has recently been selected to join Relais & Châteaux, the prestigious global association for five-star hotels and two- or three-star Michelin restaurants recognised for their exceptional cuisine and hospitality, as well as their honouring of local heritage and the environment. Chef Tempelhoff, who is a Relais & Châteaux World Culinary Council member, shares this achievement with chef Ashley Moss, service and beverage director, Jennifer Hugé, CEO Paul Bruce-Brand and a talented kitchen and hospitality team. “Becoming the first stand-alone Relais & Châteaux restaurant in South Africa and the African continent is a very proud moment for my team and me,” he says. FYN is one of only eight new members worldwide to Relais & Châteaux, joining the likes of SAGA in New York and Providence in Los Angeles (which both have two Michelin Stars) and several world-renowned hotels on the list. Dining at FYN is therefore a must when you’re in Cape Town.

NEDERBURG THE MANOR

MOUNT NELSON, A BELMOND HOTEL

The Mount Nelson Hotel by Belmond has always been one of those elegant, once-in-a-lifetime kind of destinations when it comes to travelling and dining. Little did we know that they offer a weekly Sunday Jazz Brunch at their Oasis Bistro, overlooking the swimming pool and lush gardens. Dine in style from noon until 15:00 as squirrels scurry around on the outstretched lawns and butterflies and bees come fluttering and buzzing about by the flowerpots next to the window. Listen to gentle live Jazz music as you fill your plate with sushi, meze, chicken and prawn curry and delightful desserts and indulge in bottomless bubbly (if you’re open to paying a little extra).

At a mere R575 per adult (and an additional R250 if you’d like to continue sipping on bubbles) you can have a ball of a time in an intimate setting, right in the heart of the Mother City. Of course, afternoon tea is always just as much of a celebrated occasion at the Nellie, if not more so since the return of Pastry Chef, Vicky Gurovich. Spot her seasonal cakes in the lounge –from frangipani tart, vanilla bavarois with caramelised apple and carrot cake loaf to baked cheesecake, fluffy scones and seasonal surprises.

DE VOLKSKOMBUIS

Stellenbosch is a town one cannot miss out on if you’re visiting the Cape. Apart from the numerous wine farms in the surrounding area, it’s also the perfect place to explore with lovely little shops to pop into and restaurants with a true South African flair. We recently dined at De Volkskombuis, which is located just next to the Eerste River. The building dates back to 1902 and was designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Evidently, it undoubtedly has many stories to tell. The dining destination boasts warm, wooden floors and beams, vintage lighting details and simple, yet elegant curtains and couches that nudge you toward a sense of nostalgia. The menu caters for various taste buds, but we would recommend the traditional Bobotie, which comes with Basmati rice, a sambal, banana and chutney. The Chickpea Curry is also to die for. While it is a lovely, intimate setting for a family dinner, fireside lunch or even breakfast meetings, the space could also lend itself to smaller events like birthday celebrations, brainstorming sessions or exclusive corporate functions with long tables, large gardens and outside seating.

The Telegraph’s readers recently dubbed South Africa and Cape Town as the best places to travel to and we can’t help but agree. South Africa has been lauded by the newspaper as “a place of true beauty – Cape Town a supermodel at the foot of Table Mountain,” and we’re celebrating this incredible achievement by collaborating with the perfectly located ANEW Hotel Green Point and friends, bringing you the opportunity to win a front-row seat to the vibrancy of Cape Town.

CULTURE WINE BAR

They say the Cape is clicky. Well, after a glass of wine at Culture Wine Bar on Bree Street, you might feel differently. Not because of the wine, but because of the culture. This is the one place where you will find people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures and the one thing they have in mind is a love for good wine. Culture Wine Bar boasts an array of fine wines from some of South Africa’s most respected wine estates, cult classics and hidden gems, as well as natural wines and special imports from all around the world. In addition to their wines, they also offer a small menu that mainly consists of snacky type of items like charcuterie and cheese. Their prawn Po’Boy and their pork pie are two favourites not to miss out on.

Q @culturewinebar

THE MEETING PLACE

A far cry from the curated wine list at Culture Wine Bar, The Meeting Place has caught our fancy for other reasons than the limited, but suitable wine list. It’s the twinkling lights and the streetside vibe that lured us into this Stellenbosch-based meeting place. The smallish space features little seating space indoors, but quaint wooden barstools, and rustic tables and chairs outside for the perfect al fresco experience. Look out onto Dorp Street as you sip on a glass of Simonsig Chenin Blanc or Neil Joubert Pinotage and relive your youth as students walk past (or enjoy your youth and meet up with them). If you’re looking to submerge yourself in Stellenbosch localism, this is a good place to start. They also often have live entertainment.

TAKE A HIKE

This time of the year is probably the best time to hike in and around Cape Town. As of August, the mountains have been coming alive with fynbos and soon, Lion’s Head will be filled with lilac flowers that make for some of the most spectacular photos. Also, did you know that there is a patch of sand and a dam at the top of Table Mountain? There are various hiking trails that take you to the top. Make it a challenge and lunge your way up with the Platteklip trail – good exercise for those glutes with unmatched views as reward.

SCOOTER DOWN TABLE MOUNTAIN

Freewheel down two different off-road tracks with Scootours. The first track takes you down Signal Hill and the second, down the lower slopes of Table Mountain. The two-hour experience allows you to explore Signal Hill, the Bo Kaap, Lower Table Mountain and Oranjezicht and includes two runs, a guide, equipment and water. We suggest that you come with closed shoes and a jacket for the chill. Kids aged between four and nine can come along as passengers and children older than ten can drive their own scooter.

Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins, whales, seals, penguins and sun fish during the 90-minute trip which gets you back just as the moon starts to rise. The trip comes with a complimentary glass of sparkling wine and there is an onboard cash or card service for other drinks. You can also bring your own alcohol and just pay the corkage fee. Departures are season-dependent and ranges between 17:00 in winter and 19:00 in summer.

SPRING CAME EARLY

LA COCO C FOOD PURVEYORS

From the young age of 14, Jeanine Claassen dreamed of owning a shop in the quaint suburban centre known for its flower and wine shop within the Waterkloof Mini Market, as well as the thrift shop, Dawn’s Antiques. As a student, Jeanine drove along Long Street on purpose, hopeful about her one-day Waterkloof store.

That one day arrived in March this year, when she opened her third La Coco C Food Purveyors store with its white painted brick walls, brown leather seats and indoor plants. La Coco C’s flagship store, based at the In

Shere Shopping Centre in Pretoria East has been well established, and the second store opened its doors in Stellenbosch in 2020.

Under trendy lights hanging from a high ceiling, we curiously scrolled through La Coco C Waterkloof's menu, filled with various out of the ordinary, healthy but homely options. We opted for the Chicken and Pineapple Salad - a favourite among patrons, which Jeanine suggested. And, as we waited for our order, we sat back and observed.

Two friends came in five minutes apart, each with a bunch of Mini Market flowers for the other. They say great minds think alike. A mother and her daughter bonded over a light lunch, chatting about next year's studies and who's going to which university. At the same time, solo diners escaping the office indulged in the freshness of beautifully served dishes, content in the moment. We even spotted a dad and his daughter, no older than five, popping in to choose an after-school treat – a homemade cookie from the cake cabinet in front. Then, a young couple with a baby no older than three months arrived and, as the dad clearly had everything under control, the mom grabbed the opportunity to pop into the flower shop too.

Our salad arrived, loud with colour and proud in a lovely bowl. Chunks of pineapple and a generous helping of flavourful chicken strips, all on a bed of mixed lettuce, nuts, feta cheese, avo and various other secret ingredients filled the plate. It was the perfect lunch and a welcome introduction to a new season.

If you wanted some insider tips on Pretoria's secret spots where locals hang out, this is undoubtedly one of them. H

FERMIER

Fermier has been a top fine dining restaurant in Pretoria from the start – one that has proven time and again that classic elegance, creativity, investment in people and collaborations are what makes a good business work even better. Chef Adriaan Maree’s creations are mindbogglingly impressive, always beautifully served on locally made, custom pottery plates, with the most incredible miniature garnishes that magnify the wonder of find dining.

Sommelier Klaas Setati also forms an integral part of the experience at Fermier, pairing each dish with a selection of the country’s best wines – some vintages of which only a few hundred bottles were released. From the romantically lit under-the-trees pathway that leads to the restaurant and the sheepskin detail on the seats, to the top-quality service and the surprising combinations of the freshest ingredients – Fermier is a firm favourite for us.

AFRO-BOER

While Afro-Boer is no newby in Pretoria, we’ve recently returned only to find that it has evolved into quite an exciting dining (and shopping) destination. Not only do they serve delicious cuisine while kids can play their hearts out on outstretched lawns with jungle gyms, a little playhouse and miniature tables scattered about, but they also have numerous unique little shops to pop into. From a lovely little bookshop and a magnificent gift shop with all kinds of wooden toys, floral dresses for little fairies and unicorn-themed gifts. The Pretoria Products Shop is also located on the premises, selling all things local. Afro-Boer is a go-to for brunch, lunch, or even tea and cake, with divine freshly baked goods to indulge in.

CORRETTO

The Club’s Corretto Café in Hazelwood has recently undergone a revamp and we popped in at their first-ever Boozy Brunch. Happening every first Saturday of the month, this is definitely a must for any foodie’s calendar. Pair your Avo on Toast or a platter for two (or four) with Mimosas and Margaritas and kick off the month tapping your feet to the beat of the live DJs’ mix and a one-of-a-kind breakfast fix. While we can highly recommend inviting some friends and making it a memorable event all over, it’s also a great morning out for the family, with The Club’s state of the art jungle gym boasting ample entertainment for kids. Also, be sure to try Corretto’s baked cheesecake – it’s to die for!

Plus, they also have lovely tables and seating where you can indulge in whatever tickles your fancy – from pancakes to pizzas. Old-world charm permeates through the property which boasts an ornamental garden, a treasure trove of vintage décor and objects d’art.

The Grand Exotic’s menu is traditional with a spin, including a choice of delicious meals inspired from a diverse, eclectic mix of culinary styles. We opted for the Grand Benedict, which came in the form of poached eggs and salmon, served on an aubergine and parmesan fritter, complete with a flavourful thyme and lemon infused hollandaise sauce. A FRESH START

FOR SOUTHERN SUN DE WAGEN

Following the recent floods which saw the Eerste River burst over its banks, it was good to see that things have started normalising in Stellenbosch again. Water stood ankle high in places at the Southern Sun de Wagen Hotel we’re told, and they had to evacuate their guests swiftly.

But, like with most things in life, there’s always a rainbow after the storm. In this case, it’s a well-deserved face lift for the De Wagen Hotel and its time-honoured structures. They reopened their doors on 4 August 2023 and we were first in line to celebrate the momentous occasion with them. During an early August visit to the Cape, we stayed at the boutique hotel for one night, affording us the opportunity to explore the heart of Stellenbosch after a too long Stellies hiatus.

The Southern Sun de Wagen Hotel consists of a collection of historic farmstead buildings that dates back to the early 1900s. The buildings have been reimagined into a storytellers’ haven, having been designed by the famous English architect, Sir Herbert Baker. With its white walls and Cape Dutch heritage, Southern Sun de Wagen boasts a

self-catering feel with the bonus of hotel-style service. We stayed in one of the 22 stylish units, located underneath an impressively large tree. Although one could argue that some of the room furnishings were mismatched, the overall atmosphere was inviting with modern marble bathroom flooring and vintage furniture scattered throughout. The incredibly comfortable bed was the best part of it all, though. After a full day’s seminar, a glass of wine at the streetside wine bar, The Meeting Place and finally dinner at the adjacent De Volkskombuis, we hit the sacks hard.

De Volkskombuis nextdoor dates back to 1902. The former Sir Herbert Bakerdesigned labourers’ cottages formed part of the then Vredenburg farm. It stood vacant for a while, until the Rupert family initiated its full restoration in 2016 and now, this warm, welcoming space with its large wooden beams welcomes both locals and tourists with delicious, hearty South African

cuisine. It’s also here where Southern Sun de Wagen’s guests have their breakfast (which is included in the stay) and bookings can be made for lunch and dinner.

Southern Sun de Wagen, with its freshness, but also its rich history, is certainly worth a visit. H

A mother jogged past; her toddler just ahead. It was a cool morning, following two warm days in the Cape. There was a freshness in the air and it felt good being back in the City of Oaks – this time, staying at the newly renovated Southern Sun de Wagen.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL

AT MHONDORO SAFARI LODGE AND VILLA

Ayoung boy came running up to us, introducing himself as Alexander, the lion. He was barefoot and carefree, wearing camo pants and he emitted exactly that which we were about to experience over the next two days. The five-year-old Xander’s parents - the CEO and marketing mogul of Mhondoro - were short on his heels to welcome us, introducing themselves as Fritz and Ronel Breytenbach. It was round about lunchtime that we arrived. In front of us stood an old fig tree, which we were later told had been estimated to be about 300 years old. Underneath, tables were beautifully set and Oupa – whom we later became well acquainted with – came forward, offering us an elegant glass of bubbly in the bush. (From that moment, he never stopped offering us drinks for the remainder of our stay!) Then, instead of being ushered to the

under-the-tree dining area, we were guided to a large greenhouse. Mhondoro’s chef –imported from the Cape – invited us to pick our produce from the vegetable garden. “And I will make it for you,” Chef Zinobia Martin said. In awe, we stepped gently between fresh herbs and greens, rubbing a mint leaf here and picking edible flowers there. Soon we had baby spinach, rocket, rosemary, the one and only brinjal, radishes and more in the chef’s basket. Dwayne Gonsalves, the farm manager, explained that this was but the start of Mhondoro’s journey to becoming more sustainable. September should see a whole new lounge area for tourists either waiting to be transported to the main lodge, or those who are returning home and waiting for airport transfers. Chef Zinobia excitedly shared about the deli that will also be opening soon, boasting all kinds of pickles and produce

– something she is very passionate about. Then, as she walked ahead to start cooking, we found our seats under the giant fig tree, curious to learn more about Mhondoro’s latest farm-to-table experience and keen to see the main lodge.

The al fresco lunch was delightful and fresh and between chit-chats with Xander (who goes to school at the on-site Wilderness School with his younger sister and others) and grownup conversations among peers, one thing was clear: The heart of Mhondoro is its people.

LIVING IN LUXURY

The drive to the actual main lodge is quite a distance from Welgevonden Game Reserve’s main gate. In fact, it served as our first game drive for the trip, boasting stunning sunset views and an opportunity to just be in the moment.

It is funny how a two-day trip with an itinerary packed to the brim can still have you return rested. Contrary to the busy city life, an activity-filled weekend at Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa is food for the soul. Here, it’s the people building the experiences that make the memories last longer.

Just as twilight set in, Mhondoro Safari Lodge and Villa appeared in the distance. A couple of bends and turns later we were there, hopping off onto a decked staircase leading to the lodge. We were to stay at the villa – a spacious home away from home, which can accommodate up to six people in its three lavish bedrooms. The villa is perfect for families or groups and comes with a private chef, butler, swimming pool, spa, yoga room, gym, game viewing vehicle with a ranger and housekeeping staff. In addition to this, the lodge can accommodate a further fourteen guests.

Both the main lodge and the villa have been elegantly decorated with both local and international design elements, with the latter boasting a lovely open kitchen where one can watch Chef Zinobia cook up a storm. The villa’s lounge area comes with a lovely fireplace and stack doors that allow for game viewing from the comfort of the couch. Both the villa and the lodge look out over a waterhole and many have been lucky enough to spot ellies drinking water from the villa’s pool.

A large dining room table invites those staying in the villa to spend quality time together, whether its over scrumptious homecooked meals or a game of Monopoly. There is also a porch that laces the villa from the front door right around to the back, perfect for basking in the sun when the weather allows. Here we enjoyed watching little birds dip their beaks in the birdbath on numerous occasions and it also served as the perfect brunch spot before departing.

MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Many memories were made at Mhondoro, but none of them would have been the same without its people. Cultural experiences have an immense effect on how one perceives something, and at Mhondoro it was the people who elevated each experience even a little further.

They offer special touches, highlight the small things and read their guests like books. From stargazing opportunities to walking safaris, guests get to submerge themselves in

the bush with the guidance of well-trained and experienced people. The Mhondoro experience is a once-in-a-lifetime experience which we can highly recommend, especially if you’re a person who likes to share special experiences with other people.

On our last night, we were treated to dinner in the boma. Xander, the lion, jumped onto a guest’s lap. The older man – clearly a return guest – had been given a gift from the staff and as they sang Happy Birthday, Xander helped him to open his present. Mhondoro is that kind of a place, where you not only spot the Big Five in a five-star environment, but where you also make friends from all over the world. It’s a special place, with people who want to make a difference not only in other people’s lives, but also when it comes to doing things more sustainably. H

HARBOUR HEAVEN & URBAN ALLURE

EMBRACING HISTORY, CULTURE AND COMFORT IN TWO OF NEWMARK HOTELS’ CAPE TOWN DESTINATIONS

TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME

The Victoria & Alfred Hotel’s grandeur has a way of slowing you down, though. Boasting magnificent views across the quay, this luxury hotel dates back to 1904, when the building’s purpose was much different. It is the former North Quay Warehouse, you see, and with that comes many interesting stories. The hotel was named after England’s Queen Victoria and her son in 1990. They visited Cape Town in 1870 when Prince Alfred officially opened the Breakwater Basin (which is the V&A Waterfront today). The Victoria & Alfred

Hotel was the first building to open its doors at Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront development in 1990.

What we loved most about this charming hotel, was that it offers visitors the opportunity to explore the V&A Waterfront without having to arrange transport. We merely stepped out into the waterfront, which – on its own – boasts various activities to engage in. Of course, the beautiful views from our room were worth writing home about too. A full view of Table Mountain is a luxury you don’t often get in Cape Town. Throw in the touristy atmosphere of the restaurants below and the beautiful harbour vistas, and it’s the perfect hotel setting. We sat in the vintage windowsill for at least 30 minutes, watching yachts sail

past and curious seals popping their heads in and out of the water.

Thick hallway walls, vintage elevators and the overall atmosphere in the hotel lobby had us feeling right at home. While our room’s décor seemed dated, the hotel lobby – from which we walked straight into the in-house GINJA Restaurant and then onto the pier – was elegantly decorated and inviting.

There is always something happening in and around the hotel, but it’s not a rowdy location where the city’s nightlife will keep you up at night. In fact, it’s a peaceful holiday setting that comes with comforting, touristy surrounds, ideal for those not so familiar with South Africa’s Mother City.

The thing about hotel stays is that you never have quite enough time to explore all the nooks and crannies as you ought to. Especially when you’re visiting Cape Town for only four days, and you’ve literally packed your itinerary with hourly activities…

THINGS TO DO ON THE VICTORIA & ALFRED HOTEL’S DOORSTEP

- Walk the pier and check out the new location of the Cape Wheel.

- Dine at GINJA Restaurant, the Victoria & Alfred Hotel’s in-house restaurant which is also open to the public. They currently offer a delightful Sunday brunch.

- Go shopping at the Victoria & Alfred Mall and be sure to also pop in at The Watershed, known for local art, fashion and design. The Watershed boasts an exciting indoor playground – Playdate Superpark – for kids, including a 3D maze, obstacle course, zipline and more.

- Visit the Zeitz MOCAA (Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) and explore The Silo District’s art scene.

- Pay a visit to the aquarium, which features over 350 species, a Save our Seas Shark Exhibit, an African penguin colony and an impressive underground tunnel at the I&J Ocean Exhibit.

- You can even go sailing from the V&A Waterfront, with a traditional 58foot gaff-rigged schooner. Find them at Shop 7, Quay 5.

- Go running. There is a 5km running route with Table Mountain on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. It starts at Ferrymans Tavern and ends at the Table Bay Hotel.

- Go Stand-Up Paddleboarding through the waterfront’s canals on a 3km loop. They’re based at Battery Park.

LIVE IT UP AT THE ONYX

In contrast to the historic Victoria & Alfred Hotel building, another hotel by Newmark Hotels is The Onyx – an apartment hotel with a more modern, urban allure.

The Onyx is the result of a repurposed iconic Nedbank building, based on the historic Heerengracht Street. It forms part of the residential revival of the area, with sophisticated apartments and penthouses located a mere 10 minutes’ walk from the V&A Waterfront and a stone’s throw away from the CTICC. In fact, one could compare these apartments with a glamorous, trendy stay in New York, London or Paris.

The in-house restaurants, YU Asian Tapas and Bar and MRKT, are both located on The Onyx’s ground floor, offering delightful cuisine. We had breakfast at MRKT, which looks out onto Adderley Street and could not get enough of the unmatched people-

watching opportunities. Locals came past on their way to work and tourists popped their heads in at the doors, curious about what’s on the menu. Of course, with The Onyx being an apartment hotel, the accommodation units all come with their own kitchenettes, so if you’re not keen on going out, you can always prepare your meals in the comfort of your room.

We can seriously see ourselves living at The Onyx. H

Q @newmarkhotels

DID YOU KNOW?

Adderley Street is one of the most famous streets in Cape Town and it starts off at Heerengracht and ends at the entrance of the Company Gardens. This lively main road was much different in its heyday. It was originally called Heerengracht, after a gracht (canal) that ran down its centre. The water came from rivers that flowed from Table Mountain. At the time, the street was mainly residential – much different to its current string of shops, historical buildings and flower vendors. The street became the commercial hub in the 1950s and its name was also changed to Adderley Street in 1950, in honour of the British politician, Charles B. Adderley who fought against the British Government to turn Cape Town into a penal colony.

LEADING VENUES

#HELLORECOMMENDS

It’s that time of year again when yearend celebrations and corporate events are on the rise. It comes at the right time, for sure, as the weather starts changing and groups can meet and mingle out on the lawn, under large trees and even on outdoor adventures. Even weddings seem to be planned

differently these days, with experiential marital memories taking priority over the traditional type of wedding. Just recently we saw someone share a couple’s wedding photos on social media, where they went on a tour through Johannesburg for their wedding reception. That said, while people are

keen on getting together to celebrate, the group size and activity are two factors that seem to weigh a little more than before. Hence, more intimate venues or at least venues that offer and outdoor option, and unique activities and entertainment are what we are looking forward to as we start our descend in 2023.

HOUGHTON HOTEL & CONFERENCE VENUE

The 5-star Houghton Hotel – an urban oasis in Joburg – hosted the successful Houghton Hotel Conferencing, Wellness and Leisure expo in July this year. The inaugural expo showcased the destination’s diverse offerings to esteemed members of the MICE and tourism industries, as well as corporate guests. The interactive event was such a huge success that it has now been added as an annual event in the destination’s calendar, making it a valuable networking tool for the tourism and conferencing industries.

Apart from the Houghton Hotel’s wide range of accommodation options – from spacious suites to an impressive 850m² multi-level penthouse – it also boasts a gastronome’s paradise with Séjour Restaurant, Nova Bistro and the Astra Lounge. Furthermore, The Venue is a sophisticated conference and events venue which can accommodate up to 500 conference delegates and 350 banqueting guests. It’s perfect for both corporate functions and celebratory events of any size.

If you do happen to stay at The Houghton Hotel, be sure to rejuvenate and relax at The Houghton Hotel Spa. At this avantgarde facility, it’s all about holistic living with outdoor relaxation, quality spa treatments and a heated infinity pool. Pure bliss. You can even combine your corporate

event or calm the pre-wedding jitters with a game of golf at the Jack Nicklaus designed Houghton Golf Course adjacent to the hotel. For the fitness fanatics, there is also the FitBar gym, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. And, as if that’s not enough, the hotel also boasts world-class medical suites where you can enjoy a unique remedial experience, including dentistry, optometry, aesthetics, laser treatments, physiotherapy, as well as skin-, hair- and beauty treatments.

ERINVALE ESTATE HOTEL & SPA

It’s true that wine tasting is but the beginning when visiting the winelands. It is a good beginning, though and therefore tasting some wines from the Helderberg region while visiting Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa, is a must. Taking place on the last Wednesday of every month, Erinvale Estate Hotel & Spa’s Winemakers Dinner is a great option for an intimate corporate event. They’ve previously hosted winemakers from Eagle’s Nest, Ken Forrester Wines and Carsten Migliarina. Book a table for you and your team at Stefan’s to experience the extraordinary culinary talents of Chef Stefan Bekker, including a seven-course fine-dining experience of note.

In addition, Erinvale is also the ideal venue for executive meetings and teambuilding experiences. The destination boasts three separate meeting and event spaces: Oak Room, Birch Room and the Camphor Venue. While the Oak and Birch rooms are meant for more intimate meetings, the beautiful Camphor Venue is made up of three interleading spaces which can either be booked separately or together. It is ideal for meetings, exhibitions, cocktail functions, banquets and gala dinners alike, spilling out into the beautiful indigenous garden and courtyards in summer.

CLICO HOTEL, RESTAURANT & CONFERENCING

Recognised among the top 10% of hotels worldwide by the 2023 Travelers’ Choice Awards, Clico Hotel, Restaurant & Conferencing is an oasis of elegance, comfortably located in Jozi’s popular Rosebank neighbourhood. Here, the bubbly flows and the food is exquisitely prepared at both Clico Restaurant and the brand-new, casual dining offering, 400 Degrees at Clico.

The hotel caters for smaller and intimate events with sliding doors that open onto the garden. It is the ideal venue for events like special occasion lunches, dinners for up to 36 guests, cocktail parties for around 50 people, tea parties, christenings or intimate weddings with a difference. You can also hire the entire boutique hotel on an exclusive basis should you wish.

Clico Restaurant is also available for private functions by prior arrangement and is perfect for private meetings and occasions.

FAR FROM THE NORM

CITROËN VAN LIFE IS BACK, BABY!

Many people are switching to camper vans, reaping the benefits of being free to travel when and where you want. Camper vans are practical, can go almost anywhere, they are less than 2m high (which means it can fit into car parks), and they can be used day-to-day, all year round. It’s the perfect solution. In fact, camper vans now account for around 90 000 new vehicles in Europe annually – more than half of all leisure vehicle sales.

Hosted between 25 August and 3 September 2023, the Düsseldorf Caravan Show was packed with surprises, especially where Citroën is concerned. The company showcased its Type Holidays van at the event – a teaser concept that combines the iconic Citroën Type H with the more modern SpaceTourer.

Citroën has always found inspiration in the freedom of sharing and the freedom of movement. The brand has the knowhow when it comes to developing practical, ingenious, affordable models that go handin-hand with terms like ‘escape’ and ‘leisure’. With van life becoming a popular way of travel – especially under younger generations

– the unrestricted way of travelling has brought about the vehicle company’s commitment to the Type Holidays offering.

Citroën’s Type Holidays offers all the advantages of the Citroën SpaceTourer: Space, comfort, quiet operation, two sliding side doors, an independently opening tailgate window and more. The van with its retro exterior was kitted out by one of the world’s leading specialists, Bravia Mobil. It comes with a pop-up roof that allows you to stand upright in the living space, which switches to a bedroom in night mode, complete with a double bed. There is also a two-row bench seat which transforms into a comfortable

two-person bed. Furthermore, the front seats can swivel towards the living area and there is a complete kitchenette with a cooking area, sink and fridge. The Citroën Type Holidays teaser also includes a folding table for dining (or working if you’re a nomad), as well as cupboards for storing. And, a Webasto heating system ensures optimum temperature control on the road.

The Type Holidays serves as the start of a comprehensive Holidays range, which should be available across the Citroën network soon. H

OMODA A DIFFERENT APPROACH

The crowds at the Shanghai Auto Show were stunned with the OMODA and JAECOO – both independent brands branching out from Chery – at the 20th Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year. After test driving the OMODA C5 – a sporty drive that attracted over 3 billion hits on its various platforms and interactions – we understand why.

With some of the latest tech and features, the dashboard takes some getting used to, but once you’ve got the groove, chances are that you wouldn’t want to get out.

OMODA is one of the latest premium, modern vehicle brands in South Africa and made a resounding impact at this year’s Festival of Motoring, held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit between 25 and 27 August 2023. The OMODA C5 range offers three distinct versions in the country: Tech, Luxury and Elegance with a styling pack on the Luxury and Elegance models. Tony Liu, the Executive Deputy General Manager at OMODA SA says: “The OMODA C5 looks like nothing else on the market. Its design, both internally and externally, breaks free from the norm, introducing an entirely

contemporary and distinct approach.” We can’t help but agree.

The OMODA C5 was recently awarded with the prestigious five-star safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), further solidifying its position as a global leader in automotive safety standards. It comes with a 78% high-strength steel body structure that can withstand pressures up to 1800MPa. Furthermore, a comprehensive range of airbags are fitted inside, including front, side, side curtain and middle airbags.

The C5’s new Luxury and Luxury S grades slotting in between the Tech and the Elegance ranges. The new Luxury grade is similar to its Elegance siblings when it comes to specifications and styling. Both Luxury models have 18-inch precision cut alloy wheels with 215/55 tyres and red brake callipers. They also have the same trendy roof-mounted spoiler, LED running and

brake lights, as well as a sunroof for the top of the range model. Other upgrades from the Tech specification include powered seat adjustment for both the driver and the front passenger, a powered sunroof, as well as a powered rear hatch door for easy access and greater security.

The OMODA C5 is backed by the Chery Group’s unmatched 1 million kilometre / 10year engine warranty with the new models retailing from R447 900 for the OMODA C5 Luxury and R479 900 for the OMODA C5 Luxury S model.

At the Festival of Motoring, OMODA also offered an exclusive preview of the flagship OMODA C9, which is due to arrive in South Africa later this year. It comes with the latest cutting-edge technology and premium finishes and will extend the brand’s lineup, including a more potent 2.0 variant.

SELLING YOUR PROPERTY?

SELL IT YOURSELF WITH THESE FIVE TIPS

#HelloLifestyle

Supplied

While using an agent to help you sell your home has its merits, it is possible to do it yourself and financially, it might even be the better option.

PJ Veldhuizen from the specialist property law firm, Gillan and Veldhuizen Inc. says there are a few boxes to tick if you plan on selling your home without an agent:

1

APPOINT AN ATTORNEY

Hiring a competent property attorney is the best first step, ensuring a water-tight contract. “Before you put your property on the market – whether you have enlisted an agent or not – find an attorney and have the agreement template with all considerations in place, ready to be completed by both parties and signed.”

The confidence you gain to sell your property without requiring an estate agent and without having to part with a percentage of the selling price, could be well worth the consultation fee.

2

GET YOUR PROPERTY VALUATED

Secondly, have a valuation done on the property. Various property practitioners offer no-obligation valuation services. Property 24’s online valuation service is based on researched neighbourhood data and come at a minimal cost.

3

GET ALL ADMIN DONE UPFRONT

For a successful sale, you require electrical, plumbing, beetle and gas compliance certificates. Get all these compliance certificates in place before embarking on selling your property. “It has been reported that these service providers realise that the success of a sale relies on the Certificate of Compliance (COC), and incorporate all sorts of unnecessary costs into issuing such certificates. Get your certificate upfront and make sure that they are valid for the prescribed six months,” says Veldhuizen.

4

more you pay, the more you get of course, including the provision of a professional photographer and a video reel for your listing. You can also list your property on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree but be selective, submit a comprehensive listing and use filters.

5

LIST IT ONLINE

Nothing is real these days if it’s not online. There are various online property portals with effective packages for private sellers. Depending on your budget, you can expect to pay between R240 and R4100 for a listing on Property 24. The

SCREEN POTENTIAL BUYERS

Carolyn Savage, the General Manager at IOL Property, says it’s become standard for buyers to provide proof of identification when viewing a property. This is mainly to safeguard the seller against criminal activity. People often also need to produce pre-qualification certificates for affordability and finance when arranging a property viewing.

By following these steps, you might reduce delays and increase the success rate of selling your property at the best possible value. H

SERENTIY HILLS

A DEVELOPMENT WITH SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY AT ITS CORE

A Margate-based development has been making waves both locally and internationally, with even President Cyril Ramaphosa congratulating the team behind it on its significant national investment contribution at the 5th SA Investment Conference (SAIC) earlier this year.

Serenity Hills is undoubtedly a development to keep an eye on, as it not only garners national attention, but has also already secured several international buyers looking for a secure sanctuary on the South African coast.

The eco-estate of 120 hectares will offer residents secure living in 600 residential units across three neighbourhoods. Ultimately the units will range from twobedroom to four-bedroom freestanding homes, as well as the very unique Forest Pods. Said to offer superb value for money, it is sustainability and community development that serve as the driving ethos of the development.

Home designs are solar-ready and the development comes with rainwater harvesting, with three months’ backup water for uninterrupted supply. Furthermore, the estate will also offer stateof-the-art digital living, with the in-house app that allows residents to pay utility bills, request domestic services, register guests and order food all in one place.

In addition to the residential units and Forest Pods, 70 hectares will also be utilised

for private conservation, ensuring that it remains a low-density development.

More than 50% of the units had already been sold by the end of April this year, with buyers coming from Canada, the UK, Switzerland and Germany. The benefit to investors includes value for money and a low cost of living that can’t be matched in other coastal regions in the country. At the same time, the development is also in close proximity to private schools, private hospitals, specialists, shops, malls and even an airport. A clubhouse with swimming pools, the Infinity Bar and The Bistro are other lifestyle elements that residents can look forward to.

Development Director, Sam Wenger brings his Swiss-born influence to the design of the pet-friendly estate, allowing for a flow between home and nature. GET RICH, STAY RICH

GENERATING WEALTH IS ONE THING, BUT HOW DO YOU MANAGE IT AND HOW DO YOU HAND IT OVER?

Wealth managers and directors of the Pretoria-based Bovest, PJ and Geo Botha, have just launched their book called ‘Word Ryk, Bly Ryk,’ which translates to ‘Become Rich, Stay Rich.” While the book focuses on wealth management, it has a strong golden thread of family values and a healthy money mentality that gets pulled through a rather easy, practical and interactive read. The brothers say that this is the kind of book that is perfect for fathers and sons, or mothers and daughters to read together. We asked them some questions about topics they touch on in the book:

WHAT ENCOURAGES A HEALTHY MONEY MENTALITY?

Talk about money

While we work with money on a daily basis, it is still something we don’t talk about in our schools and our households often enough. “It’s there every day, yet we don’t talk about it,” says PJ. “It should be a more open conversation; people should talk about it more.” Geo adds that when you are sick, you go to the doctor and he heals you. “Money is something you can hide. No one necessarily

knows your wealth status. Few people would admit that they are ‘financially unwell.’”

That’s probably why they don’t take the necessary steps to get (h)wealthy. While we don’t mind consulting someone on other problems, we are reluctant to do so with our finances.

Stay humble

PJ finds it interesting that people who can manage their own wealth, often use financial advisors. “It’s like the top golfers who still use coaches.” He believes those people realise that even though it’s what they do for a living, they don’t know everything. He also says that because money is such an emotional thing, it’s better to stay humble as things can change so quickly. “Stay humble with your money, and in all aspects of life.”

WHERE DO YOU START WHEN YOU WANT TO GENERATE WEALTH?

As important as it is to know where you’re going, you also need to know where you’re starting. Then, be very specific about what your wealth goals are. “If you don’t have a long-term goal, you won’t be motivated [to save],” says Geo.

WHAT’S THE NUMBER ONE BUDGETING AND SAVING RULE?

In their book, PJ and Geo refer to people

overcomplicating the budgeting process. “Just list your must-have expenses. Then, save 20% and the rest you can use as you see fit,” says Geo. He believes that it’s very important to get into the habit of saving. “It’s also something to teach your children.”

Start small. That’s why a percentage of your income is possibly the best way to start saving. You also don’t have to start with 20% of your income. Even if it’s 10%, just start saving. “It’s about the principle,” says Geo.

PJ adds that automating your investments is a great way to keep to that principle. “It’s an expense. It’s discipline.” H
