If there’s one hidden gem in the Midlands that you must know about, it’s Little Fields Country House just outside of Howick. Located on twelve hectares of farmland in the beautiful Cedara Valley, it’s the perfect fit for families or groups looking for a change of scenery. What we like most about Little Fields, though, is the sheer passion poured into everything the hosts, Phil and Di Taylor do. They’ve created a destination that makes you feel right at home; one where you can spend quality time with family, friends or colleagues.

With Di being a landscaping guru, it’s also no surprise that the gardens are glorious. From a cleverly laid out veggie patch, dubbed The Greenery, and rabbits for the kids to feed, to beautiful English country-style gardens naturally fringing Little Fields Country House, Little Loft Cottage and Fern Forest Cottage.

COME INSIDE While photos and words will never do the experience justice, we can certainly try to give you a glimpse of Little Fields’ magic. We stayed in the Little Loft Cottage - a small country house on its own - with a cosy lounge and fireplace, a lovely kitchen, two bedrooms and bathroom for biophilic dreamers.

Wide glass doors offer magnificent views across typical Midland meadows, with cows lazily grazing in the distance. The self-catering cottage’s country-style kitchen has a breakfast table where we soon made ourselves at home, indulging in Di’s delicious, homemade muffins.

The upstairs twin room comes with a bookshelf filled with children’s books and the dreamiest little doll house, complete with wooden puppets and custom-made miniature beds and blankets. It was as if the kids had entered a whole new world and their imaginations instantly ran wild. The Little Fields Country House is a fourbedroom farmhouse set in meadow-like gardens. It can sleep nine people comfortably and can be booked exclusively at a standard rate per night.

Little Fields’ motto of #ipadsawayletsplay is certainly the way to go. There is so much to explore. They even invite their guests to get back to nature by foraging some of their seasonal fruit, veggies and flowers. Heaven in the Midlands, we tell you. Heaven! It overlooks the dam and wetlands and like the Little Loft Cottage and the Country House, it’s also self-catering.
