RIGHT,
WHERE YOU NEED TO BE

oot your horns and blow your whistles – spring has sprung and the one thing we want to do, is celebrate! So, bring the bubbly (check out our favourites on page 28) and let’s chingching to spring!

It’s clear that this year’s year-end celebrations are set to take on a different form. Some might prefer to keep things small and intimate, while others will be pulling out all the stops as we’re two years behind on celebrating. Still, as family values have increasingly been put on a pedestal by many, we will also see companies including their families in their year-end celebrations.

That reminds me of the days when the company my father worked for would host a family-inspired year-end event, complete with Christmas trees, Santa and gifts for the kids (which the parents, of course, had to buy and deliver well in advance). These celebrations

– humble as ever – made such an impact on my childhood that I remember the gifts I got and how we played around my dad’s office ’til this day. (One year, I got a Barbie which my four-year-old daughter now plays with!)

While we’re celebrating the home run of 2022, I’d like to encourage you to not only celebrate year-end. No, go out and celebrate life. Celebrate your family. Celebrate friends. Celebrate being healthy and alive. Celebrate the big wins, but don’t forget to celebrate the little wins too, as they were the steppingstones that got you to that big win. Celebrate change. Celebrate familiarity. Celebrate with great food from all the lovely restaurants we recommend in this issue –the new ones, but also the institutions. Celebrate impulsiveness, pop a duffel bag in the boot and take a road trip (we’ve got the perfect vehicle for your trip on page 60). Celebrate our beautiful, diverse country by stopping over at the venues we recommend in this issue and let us know about your experience.

Let’s get festive in October and November and truly celebrate this year-end like there’s not going to be another.

Enjoy the read!

“TAKE SMALL MOMENTS, OFTEN.”

FESTIVE SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA10

If you’re a 90s baby, you’d be familiar with the well-known Afrikaans soapie, 7de Laan and you might even remember the tall, dark and handsome character, George Kyriakis. While he can still be described as tall, dark and handsome, he’s clearly gained some wisdom over the years, with the evidence reflecting in a well-groomed salt and pepper beard. And, even though he’s no longer the Laan’s favourite Greek hunk, Nico Panagio still acts in various television series and feature films, and he has become one of the country’s favourite television presenters as the face of Survivor SA.

For all intents and purposes, Nico will be involved with the project as presenter for as long as they will have him. “It’s been a wonderful challenge, and a great blessing to be part of the project,” he says.

The reality series has become a worldwide phenomenon, with fans tuning in on numerous channels and platforms globally, including Australia and the USA. But, Survivor SA is not Nico’s only gig. As a freelancing artist, he has become accustomed to hustling and finding a balance amidst the chaos of having to keep numerous balls in the air.

With the corporate season in full swing, the actor and presenter’s busy season of public speaking at events and standing in as Master of Ceremonies has just begun.

Survivor SA is one of the country’s most popular, and also most expensive reality shows.

JUGGLING FREELANCING AND FAMILY

Nico and his wife, Christi - the presenter of the new Afrikaans reality show, Houvrou of Trouvrou on VIA - have been married for sixteen years and they have two daughters who turn ten and twelve this year. They also have a dog, Harvey – a Hungarian Visla –whom he says is like their third child. “He’s a mountain dog, a swimming dog, he goes on the SUPs, and on the kayaks. He’s a trail running maniac. As long as I do it with him, he’ll do it. He is a dream dog, especially for an adventurous family,” Nico says.

Between family and freelancing, Nico evidently sometimes has to keep six or more balls in the air. Other times he only has three, or even just one (although that doesn’t happen so often). “You get used to the circus act after a while,” he says. The Panagios have learned to adapt to the seasons they’re in. When things get busy, “everyone endures and pushes through.” Nico and Christi always ensure, though that the busy seasons are never longer than a few months, as no family can endure not spending quality time together for too long. “If we are done with something, we will take off a week or two and spend time together.”

PASSION AND PURPOSE

Nico describes himself as a “good old Bible believing Christian” – something that he says often makes working in his industry a little harder. According to him, the platforms on which he can live out his passion and love for acting, have become fewer over the years.

“The scripts that arrive on my desk are all about occultism, darkness, a lot of sex, a lot of drugs, a lot of violence, murder and abuse.” If it’s a story of redemption where the ultimate message is one of hope, teaching the audience a lesson, he wouldn’t mind playing in a film with these elements in it. But, when the script glorifies occults, child- or woman abuse and violence, he doesn’t want to play a part in it.

“It’s very hard for me as an actor not to be able to take on all the roles I get offered, and to say no,” Nico says. In the same breath he says that he has made peace with the fact that he will probably never stand on stage with an Oscar in his hand. “My life doesn’t exist to be on screen, although I love it and it’s my first passion. That’s just what God allows me to do while I do His work as my priority.”

It makes sense then, when Nico says it is becoming more and more dangerous to be a Christian. But, staying on the straight and narrow is something he feels he wants to do and not something he has to do. In the end, Nico says Christianity is not what you give up. It’s what you receive.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT

Nico and his family have learned to grasp the moments in between, as there is never the perfect long stretch of time where you can truly relax. There will always be something. “We’re trying to live in the moment.” Whether it’s a cup of coffee together, or playing ball outside, it’s the stolen moments that are so valuable. “Take small moments, often.”

Nico is also a strong believer in grabbing every chance you get to be adventurous. “Life is full of experiences waiting to happen,” he says, referring to the everyday hamster-onthe-wheel pattern we so easily fall into. “We forget to enjoy life.”

AN OUTDOORSY BUNCH WITH BALANCE

As a family, they believe in balance. From food and alcohol intake to adventure and work. Of course, living in False Bay helps them to keep that balance.

“We live in a village, on a mountain, by the sea,” he humbly boasts. Fond of the outdoors, they often go hiking, SUP-ing, kayaking or even surfing. “Not one of us can really surf that well, but we enjoy it,” he jokes. “When we have time, we go to the beach, or we go surfing, or we go up the mountain which is in our backyard. Or we go to one of the most beautiful parks in South Africa, which is The Common in Noordhoek, with horses running wild and free.”

For him, South Africa is paradise.

HARDSHIPS AND HIGHLIGHTS

Amidst all the adventures, life also comes with the odd challenge. Looking back, Nico says one of the hardest parts of 2022 was the constant uncertainty. In his seventeen years of freelancing, he has gotten used to never really knowing what’s coming. “After every project I am busy with, I am jobless until the next project,” he says “and in between, I need to plant seeds for what comes next. I write a bit, I produce a bit, I hustle and do all kinds of things, so I am used to the uncertainty. But, there is at least a certainty that there will be a platform on which I can put one of the many things I do, and make a living.”

He says due to the uncertainty brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s difficult to plan ahead for the next week, month or year. “Where do you invest your money? Where do you invest your time?”

Still, 2022 came with some highlights too – moments to remember. Apart from the day it was announced that South Africans no longer had to wear Covid-19 masks, Survivor SA was undoubtedly a climax for the Panagios this year. Nico says his family went with him to the Eastern Cape, where the season was filmed, and even though he worked very hard, they were there with him, and they enjoyed it tremendously. “We were together as a family, and I could focus on Survivor only. I did not have to hustle so much.” H

FESTIVE SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA12

In the end, Nico Panagio says 2022 taught him to focus on living in the moment, “because we never know what comes next.” It also reminded him to check in with the only person who knows the future: God.

SHINE IN SUMMER

vitamin C be the answer to brighter skin?
FESTIVE SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA14

A MUST-HAVE FOR YOUR SKIN ROUTINE

Fundamentals Skincare’s Tumi Lehutso says being clued up about the key skincare products to invest in, helps to reduce your vanity size. Additionally, it could also save you a lot of money. According to her, the two products you can’t go without are serums and vitamin C.

THE BENEFITS OF VITAMIN C

Vitamin C stimulates your skin’s fibroblasts (also known as your skin’s collagen factories) to produce fresh, new collagen which gives your skin its youthful, plump appearance. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that protects your skin from cell damaging free radicals. And, it’s a wonderful brightener. Furthermore, as it helps regulate your skin’s tyrosinase production (a chemical involved in melanin production) it can ultimately also reduce hyperpigmentation and help create a more evenly toned, radiant-looking complexion.

According to health.harvard.edu there are numerous studies that indicate vitamin C’s benefits. One study showed that the daily use of a vitamin C formulation for at least three months improved the appearance of fine and coarse wrinkles of the face and neck, as well as overall skin texture and appearance. Clinical studies have also shown that combining vitamin C with other topical ingredients, namely ferulic acid and vitamin E can diminish redness and help protect the skin from long-term damage caused by harmful sunrays.

Many of the golden standard anti-aging actives, like retinol and vitamin C, can irritate sensitive skin. However, just because you have sensitive skin doesn’t mean you have to feel left out. It merely comes down to choosing the smart option for your skin. Lamelle Vita-C Lipid Serum, for instance, is said to be suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skins. It’s lightweight and oil-based and because it’s lipid-soluble, it can penetrate much deeper into your dermis, delivering results that are comparable to ascorbic acid, one of the most potent forms of vitamin C. DISCONNECT TO RECONNECT IN NATURE

THE ROOT CAUSE OF DEVICE ADDICTION

WhenI studied at university many years ago, in the days of written letters (with stamps on) and telephone calls (the kind that were still attached to the wall), we would wait weeks for communication from our friends and family.

Upon discovering a handwritten letter in my letterbox, I was thrilled to know that someone cared about my existence and well-being and was taking the time to update me on happenings elsewhere. I still remember the high I got when I returned from lectures and saw a letter in my postbox.

This thrill I experienced was a strong release of dopamine, an important brain chemical that influences your mood and feelings of reward and motivation. It is stimulated by food, exercise, love, sex, gambling, drugs and now, social media. Dopamine is our pathway to pleasure, and for some users of social

media, dopamine-increased experiences during engagement with Facebook, Snapchat, Tik Tok, Instagram, or other social media platforms is highly addictive. When a user gets a like, a retweet or a notification, the brain receives a flood of dopamine and sends it along reward pathways.

This ultimately vicious cycle, coupled with excessive screen time, can lead to obesity, sleep problems, chronic neck and back problems, depression and anxiety, to name a few. Our fixation on technology devices also causes a decrease in attention span –especially when multitasking on multiple devices.

Then, there is the psychology of comparison. Theodore Roosevelt said: “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Constantly seeing others post their ‘best lives’ makes us feel deficient and not good enough. Social media creates

more depression than joy. It fuels our need to head to the shops for retail therapy, so we can buy some short-term joy in new clothes, a burger, perfume, jewellery and more. This is a perpetual cycle of unhappiness, not joy.

Digital detox helps restore attention span on individual tasks or activities, which can help improve memory. This will help your relationships with loved ones as you focus more on your undivided attention to them. The relief of stress, managing screen addiction and mindful practices learned at a digital detox in nature will provide tools to implement in our busy everyday lives.

“A digital detox retreat will provide fun analogue activities in nature to reset your reliance on your devices. It will provide exercises to use daily to reduce your need for these dopamine highs. This will help bring more balance to your life.”

detox retreat

ANSWERING THE CALL TO RETURN TO NATURE

Arrive at FARMHOUSE58 in breath and acknowledgement, setting your intentions for the time put aside for yourself. Reconnect with your senses and arrive in your body through hiking and listening to birdsong. Explore forest bathing and gratitude journaling, an exercise that assists in exploring device dependency, and be reminded of how simple and effortless it is to enjoy nature.

During the retreat, a facilitated Wheel of Balance workshop will provide a safe space to assess the five elements of well-being and how you can improve all aspects of longevity, health and stress. Other activities include nature walks, garden immersions, farm-to-fork dining and most importantly, lots of time to rest, reset, sleep and recover from elements of burnout and exhaustion.

WHAT IS A SAFE DIGITAL DETOX?

While still having access to your devices, you will learn to interact with them mindfully. Should there be any emergencies, you’ll still be able to ‘check in’ if need be. Ultimately, the retreat is focused on the consciousness of being in the present moment, and immersion in nature. It’s a gentle approach and the aim is not to create additional anxiety associated with tech interactions.

Eventually, connecting with yourself in nature might just grant you a greater sense of reward than a notification, blue tick or like.

BOOK YOUR DETOX

Tula Consulting’s David McCullough, a Digital Detox Facilitator, will soon be hosting a digital detox retreat at FARMHOUSE58. Reset, reduce stress and focus on your interaction with others while also learning how to prevent tech and device addiction through simple experiences in nature, physical exercise, and mindfulness practice.

and texts leads to the increased release of the stress hormone, cortisol, and much higher stress levels. Cortisol creates a surge of energy, essential for survival by stimulating your fat and carbohydrate metabolism. It also increases your appetite for sweet, fatty and salty foods, causing weight gain.

During the digital detox retreat you can forage for fresh produce, learn about the garden that provides much of the fresh produce on your plate, and indulge in slow social dining.

Time spent in the garden, foraging, learning, and reconnecting with the land is the first step in changing how we respond to stress triggers that cause weight gain. A key part of the FARMHOUSE58 ethos is farm-to-fork dining and sustainable relationships with the lands, and the food we eat.

BOOK YOUR DIGITAL DETOX

Reframe and restructure your relationship with your devices and tech with Dave McCullough’s digital detox retreat at FARMHOUSE58 on either 19-21 October 2022, or 16-18 November 2022. The twonight retreat is all-inclusive of all activities, meals and a facilitated workshop, discussions and it’s a mere 40 minutes’ drive from Joburg.

Return to your daily routine feeling reset, with tools and awareness to use and share with others while leading a healthier and more balanced life. H

VIVARI HOTEL AND SPA

VERY OWN UTOPIA

Practically on the border of the Cradle of Humankind lies Mogale City’s very own little Utopia, complete with a hotel, restaurant, spa, aesthetic clinic, event venues and even its own on-site hospital.

The

initial idea behind Vivari Hotel and Spa was to bring a one-of-akind destination to those visiting the country for medical reasons. Medical tourism has increasingly become a trend globally, and Vivari was one of the firsts to tap into that, making it the first of its kind in South Africa, but also on the continent.

The high-end property offers day visitors, tourists and patients alike the opportunity to truly make time for themselves. Here, me-time and selfcare are priority and no one will judge you for it. In fact, at Vivari Hotel and Spa that is what it’s all about.

VIVARI AESTHETICS INSTITUTE OF SURGICAL EXCELLENCE

Vivari Aesthetics is based just above Vivari Spa, boasting a state-of-the-art hospital offering a variety of plastic surgery options in combination with Vivari Aftercare, where patients can recover in a relaxed, yet customised and monitored environment.

Treatments range from rhinoplasty (nose jobs), breast and buttock augmentation and blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) to liposuction and labiaplasty (vaginal rejuvenation). This is the ideal solution for those who can’t really afford the downtime (like celebrities and

FESTIVE SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA20
JOBURG’S

businesspeople) who want to get through the procedure and healing process in record time, while feeling fabulous and rested at the same time.

The hospital also has a Renuvion machine (one of the latest skin tightening devices) and they offer on-site hyperbaric oxygen chamber therapy to help with post-op recovery. Furthermore, the spa also has a hand in helping patients recover faster.

VIVARI SPA

Vivari Spa is not only the most tranquil environment on the property, but they also offer manual lymphatic drainage and other treatments to patients from Vivari Aesthetics, assisting them with the post-op healing process.

In addition to that, you can spend much of your day exploring the spa’s fit lab and health food studio. In addition to that, all spa and hotel guests have access to the hydrotherapy suite, which includes a steam room, an ice fountain, a heated vitality pool and an infrared sauna cabin.

The spa also offers two to three-day retreats, which include your hotel stay, health and wellness consultations and more. Or, just pop in for a mani or a pedi.

The spa therapists here are all very professional and well qualified and Tracey Mataboge in particular will effortlessly tell you whether you’re due for a detox merely by running her fingers across your feet’s pressure points.

VIVARI HOTEL

At a destination like Vivari, there are various facets that form part of the experience. Justifiably, accommodation is one of them and with that, Vivari Hotel also boasts rather good value for money. All the rooms are elegantly decorated, with only the finest, luxurious touches in the form of velvet couches, marble tiles and gold-plated rims and trims. Of course, the Crown Suite takes the cake and porter, Kagiso Tlhakanye, can confirm. With a large living room area, a raised bedroom, a walk-in closet and a bath overlooking the lush hotel gardens and the beautiful swimming pool, this suite is certainly fit for royalty.

Vivari hotel’s restaurant, Brambles is located just above the terraced gardens, with large glass windows also offering beautiful views across the gardens. At night, the restaurant’s various shapes, sizes and colours of lights add to the already marvellous peacock theme, accentuating the royal blue hues.

Vivari has also recently launched a poolside restaurant and bar, offering a more casual dining setting with delicious pizzas from their pizza oven. (This might come in handy when you’re planning a year-end celebration - just saying). H

EVENTS

While Brambles offers guests the opportunity to utilise their private dining rooms for events and meetings, Vivari Hotel and Spa also has various conferencing facilities, with some catering for up to 200 guests cocktail-style. Most of their event venues allow for festivities to take place outside – a must in a post-Covid world. And, come Christmas and New Year, they’re promising lots of dining and dancing, so keep your eyes open and your ears on the ground.

Bookings for year-end functions and celebrations are streaming in and space is limited, so if you want to secure a booking, you will need to make that call sooner than later. Prices start from R750 per person and accommodation rates start at R3000 per room, including breakfast and a complimentary mini bar on arrival.

#Artists ToFollow

THESE ARE THE UP-AND-COMING ARTISTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT RIGHT NOW…

Henry Ward Beecher said: “Every artist dips his brush in his soul and paints his own nature into his paintings.” This can be said of various South African artists too, who not only dip their brushes in their souls, but often also in their heritage, and bravely paint a picture – whether it’s with acrylics or by camera – of what they experience deep inside.

Here are some artists we thought you might want to keep tabs on:

AJ BURNS

This new artist literally blows life into his paintings. While he was discouraged by his family and teachers to take art in school, he only recently picked up his brushes again after 35 years and found himself “playing with acrylics” in a neighbour’s garage.

He was intrigued by how the paint moves, but his neighbour’s garage had no electricity, so he had to replace a hair dryer or heat gun with something else and that’s how it all started. He blew the paint with his mouth to see what would happen and loved the way the colours moved through each other. A year later, AJ is making the most beautiful abstract artworks by laying down one paint colour, then dropping a second on top of it and finally blowing the second colour through the first.

The effect of this method of art is a burst of energy, colour and texture. “I love the

unpredictability of it,” he says. “The paint seems to come to life – it keeps moving even when I’ve finished. And, the colours change during the drying process.” In winter, his works can often take up to a week to dry, as it can be up to 4mm thick. “It’s always exciting to go back the next day to see what’s happened to the painting.”

He initially promoted his work under the pseudonym, BurningViews, but he has now registered a website with his name attached to it and will be taking his art wider to international audiences. “Who knew life could be like this,” he says, encouraging young artists to have faith in their own instinct. “Don’t change to fit what others are expecting. Then find the courage to go and show your work to gallery owners. It’s hard to put your soul out there, but it’s the most important step,” he says.

www.ajburns.co.za

WINIFRID LUENA

While he is not from South Africa, Winifrid Luena’s works depict a lot of his experiences in South Africa. This follows his temporary relocation to the country from Tanzania to pursue his studies at the Market Photo Workshop.

Luena is a Tanzanian visual artist and the 2019 Absa L’Atelier Ambassador, who recently hosted his very first solo exhibition, Parsing The Juncture: 110 Billion Praxis at the Absa Gallery in Johannesburg. He creates works that allow him to communicate through conceptual art, photojournalism, and documentary work, but he has also been journeying on a path, gaining the fluidity of existence through merging past and present experiences as he begins to engage with the South African culture, society and communities.

His recent exhibition was mainly a self-reflection on his continued shifting of states, perceptions and ideas of living, in response to adapting to changes in culture, reality and self-identity after moving to South Africa, and left many in awe.

“I immersed myself in telling the stories of my own country and what was happening there – particularly during Covid-19. I had to find a way to reconcile the new reality I experienced while living in Johannesburg with the effect Covid-19 had on every aspect of life back home,” he says.

He works across various mediums, including photography, video art, digital design and illustration and he is very interested in psychological and sociological application of art. For him, it’s a way to explore different themes related to individuality, identity and history.

MONDLI AUGUSTINE MBHELE

The Durban-based visual artist, Mondli Augustine Mbhele was announced the winner of this year’s Sasol New Signatures competition, held at the Pretoria Art Museum in August. In 2016, he was the runner up in the KZNSA Annual Members’ Award.

His artwork that got him R100 000 this year, as well as the opportunity of a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Art Museum during next year’s Sasol New Signatures Art Competition exhibition, is called Iphasi nesiphesheli. It is a fabric collage on a 163cm x 121cm canvas and forms part of a series titled Umlando uyaziphinda - a isiZulu phrase that means ‘history repeats itself.’

His winning artwork is a brightly coloured collage that depicts a snapshot of an ominous moment in a protest wherein a person is lying lifeless on the ground, yet no one seems alarmed. In the piece, Mondli explores the dynamics of protests in a contemporary South Africa. It is a commentary on the current challenges faced by millions of young South Africans, who are forgotten and disregarded, and concerned for their compromised futures.

GET FESTIVE WITH THE NORTHERNERS

OUR WHISKEY SELECTION FOR THE FESTIVE SEASON

DID YOU KNOW?

Both spellings – whisky and whiskey – are correct.

The trick comes in when you have to match it with the right country of origin. Whisky is from Scotland and Whiskey is from Ireland.

Mostwhiskey fanatics will agree that this sophisticated nectar has seen a recent spike in popularity. Forbes notes that American and Irish whiskies have seen a surge in growth of 6.7% and 16.3%, respectively and the number of whiskey cases sold has increased every year since 2010.

The uninitiated would attribute this spike to an overall increase in earnings and the end of lockdown which has spurred an insatiable appetite for food and drink experiences. However, we have a different opinion, which is that distilleries are starting to develop great quality alternatives and new products with a fascinating history.

The big question is:

Where does a sophisticated, discerning whiskey lover go to enjoy the world’s finest, and what differentiates a good whiskey from an exceptional one? Exploring this topic, we can recommend the following whiskeys and trendy spots to visit this festive season:

DUNVILLE 1808

THE SPIRIT OF BELFAST

Irish Whiskey is finally making a resurgence on the international market as there are finally more options to enjoy. Dunville was originally founded in the city of Belfast and was the world’s largest whiskey producer until a series of unfortunate incidents led to the distillery closing down in 1936. Luckily The Echliville Distillery recognized the exceptional spirit and decided to resurrect the label after

80 years in purgatory.

Dunville’s 1808 is a modern blend of malt, grain and potstill whiskeys, which tastes great neat, or in a classic cocktail. It’s appealing for everyone - from the connoisseur to the curious.

SHANKY’S WHIP UNUSUAL BLACK IRISH WHISKEY

If you’re a purist, this one may not be for you. However, if you’re a true whiskey lover instinctively drawn to new, interesting finds, then Shanky’s Whip fits that category. This tipple is made from black Irish Whiskey (whiskey aged in charred barrels, hence the black part) and un-aged Irish spirit, and then blended with natural flavours and caramel.

In Ireland, it’s not uncommon for an Irish Whiskey shot to be dropped into a pint of Guinness, and Shanky’s Whip recreates this soft creamy-rich flavour. The result is a blackcoloured drink with a sweet smoothness and spicy Irish Whiskey notes.

Why the ostrich and a whip? The story goes that Shanky was a mythical character and an amazingly talented jockey, but also an Irish bad boy. The now famous ostrich incident (and ultimately the inspiration for Shanky’s Whip) occurred when he found himself thrown from his horse, and returned with an ostrich which he promptly rode to victory.

Q&A

with Steven Zylstra from Laphroaig Whisky

Laphroaig is a single malt Scotch Whisky from the coast of Islay with flavours of peat, smoke and sea salt that soar with bitter maritime character.

HL . What does Laphroaig taste like to you?

SZ. Sweet warmth, peanut butter and oats, with just a tiny dash of Iodine and of course, whisky! (Charming, I know!)

HL. Why is water - and particularly the source of water used - such an important element in the whiskymaking process?

SZ. Our water source must contain the preferred mineral content and pH balance to positively influence the final flavour. We use water directly from our famous Kilbride Stream on the Island of Islay.

HL. What percentage of chemistry, tradition/process, climate and ingredients go into making Laphroaig Whisky?

SZ. I would say it is an 80/20 split, with a lean towards tradition/process and climate, as most whiskies follow very similar chemistry and use the same ingredients.

HL. Your favourite meal served with Laphroaig, and with which variety?

SZ. The deconstructed Penicillin Dessert from Café Noir, Cape Town, served with the Laphroaig Quarter Cask.

HL. Can you recommend any whisky clubs, associations or blogs for first-time whisky drinkers who would like to learn more?

SZ. Bottega Whisky Club, Whisky Brother SA and Cape Whisky Club.

CREATIVES

Rosebank has become the business hub for both corporates and creatives and many offices have moved into more hybrid setups like the popular MESH Club. With that in mind, this common ground for uncommon people, where captains of industry gather to meet, work, connect and socialise, is ready to host your year-end function, teambuilding or networking event.

Apart from offering a space where you can go about your business without having to worry about concierge and admin, clean coffee stations and worst of all, paying rent for a building only half of your employees use, MESH is also the perfect event venue.

With the year drawing to a close and calendars start filling up with year-end

functions, MESH is set to impress members and non-members with its multi-purpose space, including boardrooms and meeting rooms (all kitted out with AV equipment) and an on-site cocktail bar for the ultimate work and play environment.

MESH’s events service is something they’ve been offering on an ongoing basis, which means that they’ve got the ins and outs down to a tee. Furthermore, they have a calendar of events that gives members access to oneof-a-kind, unique experiences. But, you can also book the venue for your own exclusive event – offering your employees and business connections a beautiful networking venue, fit for celebrations.

From catering through to entertainment, MESH does it all while offering a setting that boasts beautiful interiors and a lovely Joburg backdrop, as well as secure parking in one of the City of Gold’s most buzzing neighbourhoods.

Celebrate your year-end in style by incorporating MESH’s MIX Cocktail Bar into your event. The beautiful jade marble bar will most definitely feature as a conversation starter, as will the sweeping views that dominate the bar area. Of course,

it comes with a trendy drinks and cocktail menu, as well as a lunch, brunch and dinner menu – a feast for any foodie. There is also a dedicated coffee bar, where MESH’s friendly baristas brew up a storm and keep your event – whether formal or informal; during the day or in the evening – going with caffeine, pastries and snacks.

Since year-end celebrations were taboo for over two years, this calls for a party to remember. MESH Club is a space where everyone can gather in an exciting, trendy environment to connect and socialise, celebrating the end of a year that was filled with hard work and dedication.

GRILLHOUSE

REMIND YOURSELF WHY YOU WORK SO HARD!

KEGTAILS OR COCKTAILS?

The Grillhouse’s waiters are all keen on Kegtails and here’s why:

• Kegtails are quick to get to the table.

• It tastes good.

• Customers seem to enjoy the Kegtails more than the cocktails on offer.

• With Kegtails there is always consistency –it tastes the same every time.

Aswe sat down, our waitron, Big Boy said: “Welcome home,” while offering us two leather clad menus. It felt like home. The Grillhouse in Rosebank was exactly where we needed to be.

As one of Joburg’s established dining destinations, The Grillhouse’s dark interiors and ambient lighting added to a long-awaited date night with tables simply, yet elegantly set. Here and there we noticed subtle echoes and elements - in the form of background music and cleverly repeated glass ornaments - of the clearly popular Katzy’s Bar next door.

The Grillhouse is a bit of an institution, with the one in Rosebank being their flagship steakhouse

Here, authenticity is tangible. If you’re looking for the perfect steak in Joburg, we can recommend adding The Grillhouse to your list of dream dining destinations when visiting the City of Gold.

The food is brilliantly prepared, the portions are more than generous, and their hospitality is top-notch. It truly is like arriving back home to your favourite meal after a long trip.

TRIED & TESTED

Starters for us had to include Springbok Carpaccio - smoked and served with delicious shallow fried capers. We also tried their calamari, which was delectable light starter to the evening.

What followed was perfectly prepared pepper-crusted sirloin and fillet on the bone (a speciality at The Grillhouse). We coupled that with some sides in the form of chips, roasted vegetables and creamed spinach – you know, the kind of food your mama would prepare when you come home for a visit. And, it tastes that good too, if not better!

Dessert was a surprise and the menu states as much. We shared a glass bowl filled with what we could only describe as a mix of secret, sweet seduction.

The bonus of The Grillhouse is that you can couple your dinners with pre- or after-dinner drinks. We did both, just because we could. Prior to dinner, we popped in for some G&Ts at the bar. It was still quiet, and one could actually have a conversation. It’s not a new venue, in fact scuff marks and furniture dents are evident. But that’s what gives the bar its character. It’s unpretentious and raw and we like it.

After-dinner drinks had us entering the bar at the height of Thee Jam’s live session and it was clear that Katzy’s is the bee’s knees when it comes to jazz bars in Joburg.

Here, both locals and tourists come together for a genuinely good time, and everyone feels welcome and at ease in this melting pot of people from all walks of life. H

EXPERIENTIAL DINING DAWNS IN STELLENBOSCH, WITH STORIES ON PLATES

Dusk Restaurant offers a tasting menu and prices start around R1395 for a set 13-course menu per person. If you’d rather opt for the tasting menu with a beverage pairing (they’re breaking the boundaries and steering away from the usual wine pairing), you’d pay around R1995 per person. Think saki and the likes.

Chefs Darren Badenhorst and his mentee, Callan Austin are treating foodies to a whole new level of dining.

better time to dish out their long-anticipated, experiential menu.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Just across from Stellenbosch’s City Hall, this edgy, charming restaurant provokes not only the imagination, but also the senses.

A long corridor intrigues guests and makes them wonder about what goes on behind Dusk’s doors. The space lends itself to an experiential type of food service, with an open kitchen where the chefs push the boundaries of intellectual cooking and dish concepts.

SUSTAINABILITY AT ITS CORE

Chefs Darren and Callan continuously gain deeper ingredient knowledge, including where it’s from, how it’s harvested and how sustainable it is. They understand the ingredients’ environment, ecology and temperatures.

Some ingredients they’ve been experimenting with include Kalahari truffles, which a friend of Callan’s grows on a farm. Other ingredients are literally on their doorstep. If they want to cook trout, they go trout fishing and ultimately have a story to tell as they put it on the plate.

Dusk

Restaurant - a new dining concept - has been conceived by these two award-winning chefs, who have known each other for more than a decade since Callan walked in at one of Darren’s Cape Winelands’ restaurants.

Chef Darren says the restaurant space, in the heart of Stellenbosch, kind of fell in his lap. “It was an easy yes when it comes to location.” They have been talking about opening a restaurant together for some time and 1 September could not have been a

For them, it’s all about the connection with produce – growing, harvesting, collecting ingredients and really communicating about what’s on the plate. They want to educate people on topics they might not have known about when it comes to cuisine. They provoke people to question what’s on the plate. It’s all about being interactive, educational and entirely unique.

Dusk’s interior is dark and edgy, with gorgeous lighting, white linen and glistening glasses. The walls – black marble with white veins – simply adds to the atmosphere.

At Dusk, it’s about creating a connection with the ingredients. The chefs work small-scale and they work closely with the Stellenbosch Sustainability Institute. They also prefer to work with ingredients native to South Africa. H

VICTORIA HOTEL

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

If opulence, luxury and privacy are engraved in your travel style, the Queen Victoria Hotel might just be right up your ally. Situated in the harbour district of the V&A Waterfront, in the heart of Cape Town’s tourist district, it is close enough for you to feel like you’re part of the buzz, but not so close that you can hear the drunken sailors disembarking for a night on the town.

The hotel has a contemporary interior while staying true to the indulgence of Victorian grandiosity – something that is most evident upon entering the hotel’s centre atrium which boasts a two-story crystal chandelier.

Purple has always been synonymous with both royalty and Bourgeoisie, and the hotel uses this association to depict a feeling of opulence and luxury. With three luxury suites and 32 rooms, the hotel offers a boutique experience while still offering all the amenities that will make you feel like a king or queen.

INDULGE IN A LUXURIOUS FOUR-COURSE HIGH TEA AT THE TABLE BAY HOTEL

VICTORIA & ALFRED HOTEL

LIVE TO SERVE

Situated in one of the harbour’s most iconic buildings and historic locations, the Victoria & Alfred Hotel is the epitome of luxury and history combined. With exceptional views of both the harbour and Table Mountain, guests will feel engulfed by the Mother City from the moment they arrive.

The hotel offers 94 contemporary rooms that are well appointed with all the modern luxuries one would expect from a leading five-star property. However, the rooms are not the drawcard for this fine establishment, but rather service. Never have we had the pleasure of visiting such a well-managed hotel, where the staff truly feel like an extension of your family. From the warm welcome on arrival by the beautiful reception team to a friendly chat from your server at the Native Coffee Bar,

you’ll truly feel at home at The Victoria & Alfred Hotel.

#HelloRecommends: Enjoying an exceptional dinner at GINJA restaurant during your stay. We know that hotel restaurants don’t have the best reputation, however this eatery is very different. The bistro-style menu complements the restaurant’s unpretentious atmosphere and offers a variety of wholesome meals to satisfy your hunger after a busy day of sightseeing.

Order a couple of GINJA’s small plates, such as the Salt and Pepper Squid with curried mayo and tomato jam (R125) or fresh mussels with coconut cream, lemongrass, chili and garlic, coupled with aniseed buns (R105). Wash it all down with a glass (or bottle) of Iona Sauvignon Blanc from the Elgin region.

They don't refer to this hotel as being in the best location in the city for nothing. Situated on the pinnacle of the V&A Waterfront, in the heart of Cape Town's most loved tourist destinations, The Table Bay Hotel is synonymous with luxury, opulence and indulgence. Why should their traditional high tea be any different?

The high tea extravaganza has been personally curated by Executive Chef Wesli Jacobs, as well as Pastry Chef Thabile Mlonyeni, who inherited his love of baking from his grandmother many, many years ago.

The idea behind the menu was to give a modern twist on South African favourites - vetkoek paired with smoked salmon, a vegan item with their tofu California roll and a sweet and savoury element with the chicken and mayo crêpe.The first course begins with a savoury spread including smoked salmon cream cheese on vetkoek, rare roast beef, tomato relish and caramelised onion on Nordic bread, a vegetable and tofu California roll, chicken mayonnaise crêpe with wild garlic and a sundried tomato and peppadew mousse tartlet.

Those with a sweet tooth will delight in the raspberry profiteroles, salted caramel and kiwi and chocolate entremets, lemon panna cotta and orange meringue, as well as Mlonyeni’s gateaux cakes. The final course is a cheese board with a local and international offering, accompanied by condiments. Guests have a choice of a range of loose-leaf teas and coffees to sip on during their high tea.

The high tea is R395 per person, available Friday to Sunday, from 2PM to 3.30PM or 4PM to 5.30PM.

BOSJES GARDEN OF EDEN

BOSJES Farm or The Pineapple Place as they’ve affectionately become known (not because they sell pineapples, by the way) has fast become the Boland’s destination of choice for weddings, events and corporate functions.

This award-winning farm offers families a breakaway from the city’s madness and an Alice in Wonderland-type adventure through immersive gardens, art instillations and multiple water features. In our opinion, the main attraction of the farm is not the breathtaking chapel or the purpose-built event spaces, but rather the one-of-a-kind indigenous garden.

This exceptionally landscaped paradise is a hidden gem filled with playful areas and wondrous corners of discovery. It offers a place where one can get lost and finally unearth oneself.

#HelloRecommends: Booking a weekend stay for two. Remember to include a day at the BOSJES STELLE Spa, housed in the original farm’s stables that have been tastefully remodeled. PUT YOUR FEET UP IN THE MIDLANDS

The spa, in collaboration with Healing Earth, has recently been nominated and announced as winners in two prestigious awards: The World Luxury Spa Awards & The LUXE Global Awards. This certainly put them in the spotlight, and rightly so.

FORDOUN HOTEL & SPA

Fordoun Hotel & Spa is a bit of an institution in the Midlands and with it being a mere seven minutes from the N3 Highway, it’s ideally located too. The farm – owned by the Bates family – is a family-run business and has many, many stories to tell.

If

there is one place in South Africa where we enjoy putting our feet up most, it’s in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. With its green rolling hills and misty mornings, it’s the perfect place to wind down as the year slowly draws to a close.

HEALING EARTH TRANSFORMATIVE WELLNESS SPA AT BRAHMAN HILLS

Get pampered or peer out into the distance at Brahman Hills’ unique spa. Once inside, you might feel as if you’re in a ship gliding over rolling hills, with the space’s round windows and dark blue accents.

Here you can expect to experience an unforgettable spa journey with treatments inspired by the earth. It is all done in a luxurious, captivating setting - from traditional massages to holistic healing sessions. It’s the perfect place to unwind. Indulge in a steam room or sauna session, take part in a yoga class on the deck or merely escape into an immersive cocoon of privacy and peace.

They also have a beautiful pool from which you can view the wildlife and enjoy the Midlands’ nature at its best.

Previously a dairy farm, it has been transformed into one of the Midlands’ mustvisit destinations, with its spa being one of its major drawcards.

At Fordoun Spa you get to float in silo that’s been transformed into a flotation pool. In fact, the spa space was originally where the farm’s cows got milked and the flotation pool was initially the granary where the maize was kept. Now, it’s filled with a high Epsom salt solution, depicting something similar to a Dead Sea experience. This is where you detox, heal, relax and rejuvenate.

f there’s one hidden gem in the Midlands that you must know about, it’s Little Fields Country House just outside of Howick. Located on twelve hectares of farmland in the beautiful Cedara Valley, it’s the perfect fit for families or groups looking for a change of scenery.

What we like most about Little Fields, though, is the sheer passion poured into everything the hosts, Phil and Di Taylor do. They’ve created a destination that makes you feel right at home; one where you can spend quality time with family, friends or colleagues.

With Di being a landscaping guru, it’s also no surprise that the gardens are glorious. From a cleverly laid out veggie patch, dubbed The Greenery, and rabbits for the kids to feed, to beautiful English country-style gardens naturally fringing Little Fields Country House, Little Loft Cottage and Fern Forest Cottage.

Year-end celebrations with a family twist

Bring the family and involve them in your company’s year-end celebrations this year. With a global focus on reconnecting with each other and nature, Little Fields is the perfect fit for small firms with family values.

COME INSIDE

While photos and words will never do the experience justice, we can certainly try to give you a glimpse of Little Fields’ magic. We stayed in the Little Loft Cottage - a small country house on its own - with a cosy lounge and fireplace, a lovely kitchen, two bedrooms and bathroom for biophilic dreamers.

Wide glass doors offer magnificent views across typical Midland meadows, with cows lazily grazing in the distance. The self-catering cottage’s country-style kitchen has a breakfast table where we soon made ourselves at home, indulging in Di’s delicious, homemade muffins.

The upstairs twin room comes with a bookshelf filled with children’s books and the dreamiest little doll house, complete with wooden puppets and custom-made miniature beds and blankets. It was as if the kids had entered a whole new world and their imaginations instantly ran wild.

The Little Fields Country House is a fourbedroom farmhouse set in meadow-like gardens. It can sleep nine people comfortably and can be booked exclusively at a standard rate per night.

Little Fields’ motto of #ipadsawayletsplay is certainly the way to go. There is so much to explore. They even invite their guests to get back to nature by foraging some of their seasonal fruit, veggies and flowers. Heaven in the Midlands, we tell you. Heaven! H

OTHER ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS

The Fern Forest Cottage can sleep four with a quaint breakfast room connecting two private rooms. It overlooks the dam and wetlands and like the Little Loft Cottage and the Country House, it’s also self-catering.

HL’S READING NOOK

EDITOR’S CHOICE

Clare Stewart’s body lay hidden in a shallow ditch for two weeks until cattle herders discovered her remains in November 1993. She was a muchloved ANC activist who had found purpose in Manguzi, KwaZulu-Natal. Even as rampant political violence engulfed the region, she had made it her home. Yet, shortly after her death, local leaders were rumoured to have celebrated ‘recent demise of certain targets,’ and the police claimed to have been unable to turn up any leads and made no arrests.

The book, Clare: The killing of a gentle activist sheds light on dirty secrets of the transition to democracy – hidden history that the author, Christopher Clark clearly felt had to be told.

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS CORPORATE

South African logistics expert and businessman, Adam Kethro debuts impressively with a dramatised biography – a novel called Pleasures of the Harbour. The book tells the story of the young Adam Askew’s fortitude to achieve his life goals. It is part adventure, part action, with lots of wheeling and dealing. You’re in for an exciting read as Adam Askew traverses South Africa, opening boardroom (and bedroom) doors along the way. The book – set in South Africa during the closing decades of the 20th century – navigates a world of dodgy business partners, dubious deals and a few failed attempts at love before he can finally say he’s made it.

FOR THE FOODIES

Chef sisters, Zainab and Faatimah Paruk have been making their mark on Durban’s collective palate with their catering company, Chili Chocolate Chefs for the past ten years. Now, they’ve launched a luxurious, 240-page book called Bringing it Home, passing their valuable knowledge on to their followers. This is their fourth recipe book and it is intended to inspire and delight with unique recipes with a contemporary twist and an earthy panache.

MOVIE MADNESS

FOR

Can’t remember the last time you stepped into a movie house, covered your popcorn in butter salt, and ordered a brainfreezing slush? Between the pandemic and the plethora of content available on the likes of Netflix, Showmax and Disney, who can blame you?

But, instead of everyone in the family watching something different on multiple screens at home, why not plan an oldschool family movie night? Or, make it a fun year-end event for your office family.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the blockbusters coming to a cinema near you:

FOR THE KIDS

Lyle, Lyle Crocodile: Releasing on October 28th, this story is based on the beloved children’s book about a crocodile living in the Big Apple. The character - voiced by the sultry Shaun Mendez - befriends a young boy, Josh in need of a friend. Josh and Lyle become buddies and when Lyle faces danger, Josh and his family must come together to protect their reptilian friend.

FOR SOME SCI-FI ACTION

Black Adam hits cinemas on October 21st. Set nearly 5 000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods (and imprisoned just as quickly) Black Adam is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world. With Dwayne Johnson as the protagonist, this could go either way.

FOR SOME LAUGHS

Ticket to Paradise, out on September 23rd stars George Clooney and Julia Roberts. It’s a story about two exes who find themselves on a shared mission to stop their lovestruck daughter from making the same mistake they once made. Of course, nothing really goes as planned.

FOR THE MARVEL FANS

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the sequel to the 2018 big hit is shrouded in speculation on what will unfold, including who plays the new Black Panther. What we know is that T’Challa, played by the late, great Chadwick Boseman, has died of an illness and there is a war looming. Ominous! The rest you’ll have to see for yourself, come 11 November.

ROSEMARY HILL FARM, PRETORIA

45

If you want to reconnect with nature in a tiny house in the forest, Rosemary Hill would happily invite you in. That’s if you can secure a booking, of course. Still, this needs to be on top of your bucket list.

We had the most memorable experience, staying in their so-called Cabinville – a collection of cabins on the most fashionable farm just outside of Pretoria.

Rosemary Hill’s beautiful dwellings are so unique and exquisitely designed, you wouldn’t want to leave.

Here, each of the units or pods are unique. We recommend staying in The Huddle - a converted shipping container. This tiny home away from home sleeps two and it’s the perfect escape for couples, boasting a romantic outdoor bath and fire pit. Or opt for Pod Idladla, designed and manufactured in South Africa by Clara da Cruz Almeida. Also a two-sleeper, this pod radiates grooviness with a touch of luxury.

Rosemary Hill’s Cabinville has to be one of the chicest, most fun-filled experiences we’ve had in a long time.

KWA MARITANE BUSH LODGE, PILANSBERG Drive: 2 hours

When a hotel chain as well-known as Legacy is onboard, you know the experience will be an unforgettable one.

We recently visited Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge and we were blown away by the vast variety of child-friendly activities and other offerings.

It’s tranquil and beautiful, and the rooms have everything you need. Even leading up to your arrival, your expectations are high and well, it certainly delivers.

Kwa Maritane’s staff clearly takes pride in what they do and as a team they only add to an already incredible and authentic African feel – something one can only expect from the bush.

Not only does Kwa Maritane offer safaris for children from as young as 6 months old, but on site there is a trampoline, a rock-climbing wall, bush golf, a jungle gym within a giant sandpit, swings, slides, child-friendly heated swimming pools, tennis courts, bush boma dinners for the entire family and finally, the hide.

The hide is spectacular for the entire family. This is where you will venture down a dark cave-like walkway to enter the beauty of the bush. Situated in front of a watering hole, the hide allows you to truly be one with nature. Here you can witness leaping springboks and zebra braying and snorting. All the wildlife sightings here are spectacular and you might even spot a lion snarling or a hyena chuckling.

There is a kitchen on site, plus some roaring enclosed hot burners in the tents for those chilly spring evenings. The bell tents are warm and cosy, allowing you to fall asleep to the sound of gruff barking of kudus nearby. This destination reminds you to appreciate the beauty of nature. It’s an oasis with impressive additions and genius inclusions, like a hot tub and a natural bushveld-style pool for warm summer days. H

MINGLING WITH MERC

Forus, writing about cars can often be compared to an elegant wine tasting. You know, those events where the who’s who twirl crystal glasses, carefully contemplating the tears and tannins of the wine. It’s a fine art; something that comes with experience. You’d expect only those knowledgeable enough to comment on the wine, or in this case, cars.

Well, we might not be the most knowledgeable when it comes to the next best vehicle, but we sure are experienced in travelling, which cars form an integral part of. Therefore, who’s to say we can’t give our two cents on which cars travel best? Whilst the traditional auto journalist would come in swinging with impressive jargon regarding the Mercedes GLB250, in this issue we’re looking at it from a lifestyle point of view.

If travel is your family’s favourite pastime, Mercedes-Benz’s GLB250 will have you packing for that trip along Route 62 - the world’s longest wine route - in no time.

NOSTALGIA GOES A LONG WAY

In some or other way, a Mercedes-Benz - like a good red wine - holds a sense of nostalgia. Whether it’s a vintage C-class or the GLB250, we’ve been hooked since the 90s. Why?

Probably because getting in behind the wheel makes you feel sophisticated; elegant. No matter the model. And, while evolving with the world around it and always being open for what’s next, Mercedes-Benz has successfully secured that sense of nostalgia even in their latest models – including the GLB250 – with a couple of selective vintage trimmings.

A FIRM FAVOURITE FOR FAMILY TRAVELS

The longer we spent time in the MercedesBenz GLB250 – undoubtedly a vehicle fit for families – the more we wanted to keep it. It’s elegant, yet comfortable; sophisticated, yet casual. It’s the perfect blend.

With this vehicle, Mercedes-Benz has been rather generous space-wise, boasting maximum freedom for families headed on that long-awaited road trip. At the same time, it’s an easy drive even in the city, and it’s as comfortable on short, day-to-day errand runs as on the open road or even on a bit of a rough terrain.

WHAT CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION?

The Mercedes-Benz GLB250 comes with an impressively large boot space, which can be transformed into a third seat row for two people. You can therefore adjust the vehicle to your lifestyle – whether you’d like to carry

passengers or large travel bags. In addition to its impressive exterior, the interior is just as exciting. The dashboard features an MBUX multimedia system which is rather easy to navigate.

The GLB250 also comes with much-needed digital networking. Think personal profiles, predictive functions and a WiFi hotspot.

The safety concept ensures that you move confidently on any ground. The off-road program optimises traction on dirt tracks or loose surfaces and adapts its performance and ABS control away from tarmacked roads.

Opting for the Keyless-Go Convenience Package will allow you to start and lock your vehicle simply by having the key with you, while the Hands-Free Access function will allow contactless, fully automatic opening and closing of the tailgate.

Some people say the best vehicle is one that’s been paid off, but after driving the GLB250, we’re probably a little bias. While it is on the expensive side for most (especially when you start adding all the additional luxury, safety, and convenience features) one might argue that these features justify the price, starting at around R 907 000.00. If you value nostalgia, sophistication, safety and comfort and you can afford it, this is definitely a vehicle worth looking into.

THE ART OF POST-COVID SPACE CONVERSION

It’s an interesting conundrum, with a vast amount of office spaces standing open, particularly in big metros, according to Jonathan Reader from Ithemba Property. But while there are a lot of empty spaces, it is only the minority that are suitable for residential conversion.

When it comes to converting an office space into a living space, there are a host of elements to consider. From the building size and floor plan to the location. So, what makes it possible?

CAN THE BUILDING CARRY THE WEIGHT?

According to Reader, the right floor plan and a building structure that can handle the additional weight load are key elements when looking at converting a building into a residential space.

Residential buildings have a far greater weighting than commercial buildings. Hence, it is important to know whether the building can carry the weight of new internal apartment walls. Unfortunately, the answer is often no.

FACILITIES AND FUNCTIONALITY

Other crucial aspects to keep in mind include the availability of adequate elevators in the building, and whether they are the correct size. One also needs to check whether there are enough

parking bays and if there is ample water, electricity, and sewage capacity for an apartment building filled with people. Furthermore, green spaces for gardens and pets are other things to consider when planning on converting an office building into a residential building. Then, only once all of these aspects have been considered and evaluated, the final decision-making factor and ultimate question follows: Do people actually want to live in the location of the building, and can you persuade them to do so?

THE EXPECTATIONS

When an office space is successfully converted into a residential building, there are even more factors to look into. People who move into a converted building evidently expect better value for their money. If, for example, the apartment space is compromised due to the initial purpose of the space, the buyer might want to pay less. For instance, the apartment might be slightly longer and narrower than an apartment in a built-tolive-in block.

Most buyers or renters looking at these spaces are also looking for other amenities and facilities, like a great on-site gym, an extensive retail offering on the bottom floor, or cool rooftop spaces that would be characteristic of today’s corporate buildings.

And of course, there is the location and the story of the building.

SUCCESS STORIES

Mutual Heights in the Cape Town City Centre – once the headquarters of Old Mutual - is not only one of the first conversions in the country. It was converted into a fully functioning apartment block and is so on-trend, you might wake up thinking you’ve landed in New York! The building now offers its members a concierge service, a gym, state-of-the-art access control and best-practice security services. Furthermore, it has incredible historical value, with the design elements of the building - like the lobby and the floorto-ceiling windows - that are very hard to recreate.

The multinational technology company, Amazon partnered with a nonprofit organization to turn one of its headquarters buildings in Seattle into a homeless shelter and community support centre.

Another success story is the Voco Hotel in Rosebank. It has been transformed from a traditional bank to the ideal accommodation option for business travellers. Now a stylish, upmarket hotel, the old financial institution lends itself to chic accommodation with floor-to-ceiling windows, valet parking and luxury bathroom amenities that guests write home about.

No one ever said transformation is easy. With a bit of luck, some of these office buildings might just become iconic residential spaces over the next couple of years. H

FESTIVE SEASON 2022 l HELLOLIFESTYLE.CO.ZA 63

ENTER YEAR-END DEBT-FREE

According to the Money-Stress Tracker Survey released by DebtBusters, 94% of South Africans say that financial stress is impacting their lives significantly. With over 70% of people expressing that their financial stress is spilling over to their work life and 76% saying that even their health is being affected, something’s got to give! Q @debtbusters_sa

FACE IT!

Acknowledging the problem is step one. Then, devise a plan and face it headon. Managing your finances can be overwhelming, so don’t try and fix everything at once. The best place to start is to audit your expenses. Do you know exactly how much you’re spending on what? Does your income match your expenses? Where you can trim?

HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO ENSURE BETTER FINANCIAL HEALTH AND OVERALL WELL-BEING:

Avoid impulse buys: It’s hard, but if you want something you don’t need, think about it first. You will likely realise it can either wait, or pass.

GET HELP: There’s no shame in needing support. A financial advisor or a trusted friend can act as sounding board, and help you to prioritise and cut back on expenses.

BENEFITS OF BUDGETING

According to Yaasin Nordien, COO of DirectAxis Loans, a budget should be considered a tool to enhance your future financial security.

• It helps to prioritise and focus on setting and reaching financial goals.

• It discourages from spending money you don’t have.

• It encourages you to track income and expenses.

• It allows you to manage debt repayments, avoid bad debts and maintain or improve your credit score.

• It helps you to spot potential problems and keep them from escalating.

Q @directaxis

DO SOMETHING ELSE: If the urge to buy something extravagant arises, do something else for yourself and your wellness. Go for a good run, spend time with friends or read that book you have been meaning to get into.

GO EASY ON YOURSELF: Debt and the financial stress that comes with it is not a quick fix. Give yourself time to get your affairs in order and celebrate wins like paying off your student loan, or getting that promotion.
