About Leadership Great South Coast Our Purpose:

Fostering regional leadership for community impact.

Leadership Great South Coast Inc. (LGSC) provides an annual Community Leadership Program for aspiring and emerging leaders drawn from all sectors of the Great South Coast region.

The program builds relationships and networks between the business, community and government sectors. Participants are drawn from these sectors, creating diverse experiences and perspectives when considering the nature of leadership, and the future of our community and its social and economic prosperity.

The program is intellectually stimulating and experiential, designed to develop the skills and knowledge of aspiring and emerging leaders through contact with diverse community leaders and exploring community issues.

From Our Chair As we reflect on the remarkable journey of Leadership Great South Coast for 2023, I want to begin by emphasising the vital importance of flexible leadership in today’s everchanging economic, environmental, and social climate.

The past year has proven to be one of challenges and opportunities. The announcement of the impending end to our state government funding at the close of this year, has necessitated a profound shift in our approach. Previously, this funding served as a primary income stream for our organisation. Therefore, to ensure our continued operation for 2024 and beyond, we have reached out to our local community, businesses, philanthropists, and industry partners for their support.

In light of these challenges, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our incredible team: our Executive Officer Kate Roache and Program Manager Catherine Darkin. Your outstanding efforts in leading the organisation through this transition and your unwavering commitment to delivering our flagship program have been nothing short of exceptional. Your dedication serves as a testament to the resilience and legacy of Leadership Great South Coast.

I also wish to express my great appreciation to my fellow volunteer board members. Your valuable contributions and wise counsel throughout the year have been indispensable. Together, we have navigated the challenges, adapted to the changing landscape, and have begun to lay the foundation for a resilient and prosperous future.

It is with great pride that I congratulate our 2023 cohort.

It is a program like no other.

Participants learn in, and with, community, providing opportunities to strengthen community leadership capabilities and develop connections between local leaders and regional development initiatives.

We delivered themed program days covering topics and issues such as inclusive communities, lifelong learning, economy and innovation, climate mitigation and adaptation, the arts, and Indigenous culture.

The program also has embedded topics, including leadership skills and knowledge, ethical leadership, emotional and social intelligence, change management, project management, cultural awareness, adaptive leadership, working with government and advocacy.

The supportive, personalised learning experience enables participants to reflect on current practices and determine areas for growth. Numerous opportunities are provided throughout the program to challenge thinking and enhance skills, such as roles in the syndicate and project teams.

From the Leadership Team It has been a year of immersion, discovery, collaboration and networking for our 2023 emerging and aspiring leaders from across the region.

To the participants, what a privilege to spend 10 months with you as you refined your why, trusted the process, stretched your skill set and embraced the flurry of all things community projects.

Friendships have been formed, community connections made and so many topics explored.

You stepped in to explore your own leadership, stepped up to project planning and delivery in and with community, and it’s now time to step out and continue your role as community leaders.

We encourage you to continue to embrace being on the edge of your comfort zone, as your greatest growth as leaders will be when you lean into the uncomfortable moments.

What is next for you all is the exciting part … your community leadership work has just begun. 2023 Projects Participants complete a community project with social, economic and/or environmental outcomes for the wider community. Project teams are formed for greatest impact.

Each team volunteers their time and talent towards active learning within the community. This allows them to learn in ways that may not be possible in their professional lives.

Farmers’ Night Out Team Members Jane Hinds (Lead), Mitchell Spencer and Michaela Meade (Lead)

Project Description The Farmers’ Night Out dinner, held on 22 September at Noorat Recreational Reserve, focused on fostering connections and raising awareness of mental health and support networks for local farmers and those in the agricultural industry.

The evening included: •A panel sharing lived experience of suicide and local support networks • A comedian • Live music • Three course meal vast range of local mental health and wellbeing •A service information and resources call to action for another organisation/ •A community group to take up this initiative to ensure it continues.

Of those who provided formal feedback, 100% said this event encouraged them to have a mental health/wellbeing conversation with a friend or neighbour, or they will in the future.

Community Outcomes • 102 community members attended • I ncreased understanding of mental health and local support available •T he Farmers’ Night Out Framework was published as a guide for other organisations to replicate a like event in the future

Project Description

Community Outcomes

The Community Climate Network Scoping project assessed the need for a community-led climate network in the region and researched possible governance structures for such a body.

•W ide-ranging engagement with community members across the region

The project focused on phase 1, working with individuals and groups focused on climate action to map and document existing activity and collaborations across the Great South Coast. The project sought the opinions from key stakeholders about the challenges and opportunities in the region, as well as those with extensive governance experience, with a view to establishing the need for a dedicated community climate network.

•S takeholder map identifying organisations and champions working in the climate space across the five LGAs of the Great South Coast region •N eed and appetite for a community led climate network identified •T wo reports produced: A report that determines the need for a Community Climate Network in the region, detailing the consultation process, evidence and recommendations for a Community Climate Network; and a report that advises on governance structures that may be used in phase 2

Project Description

The project aimed to:

•P rovide a health benefit to our region • Support food security •B oost health by increasing fresh fruit access and consumption •B uild stronger community connections and more resilient communities across our region.

Volunteer pickers rescue unused fruit from people’s gardens and public spaces. The produce is shared between the owner, the volunteers and organisations that provide food to those with limited access.

Michaela Meade TITLE: Owner/Operator Dairy Farmer, Boonderoo Pastoral and Meade Livestock Carriers.

PROJECT: Farmers’ Night Out (Lead) SPONSOR: Gardiner Foundation Key learnings Participating in the Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) has given me numerous invaluable opportunities to develop key skills and foster personal growth.

Some of the most significant learnings include the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone and challenging myself.

Embracing discomfort has proven pivotal to expanding my horizons and helping to hone and refine my leadership abilities.

Additionally, overcoming my fear of public speaking has empowered me to effectively communicate ideas, motivate others and try to make a lasting impact.

I believe the program - and the lessons I’ve learnt throughout it - have equipped me with

the confidence and resilience needed to excel in future leadership roles.

Most significant change Completing the program has led to a profound increase in my confidence levels. I have gained greater self-awareness, improved my communication skills, and developed effective decision-making abilities.

By enhancing my emotional intelligence and engaging with mentors and fellow leaders, I have become more assertive and self-assured in my leadership role.

This newfound confidence has positively impacted my professional interactions and overall performance.

What comes next I’d like to continue to learn about and further understand the needs and aspirations of my community, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and develop innovative strategies to address social issues. I’d also like to continue to invest in my personal growth as a leader by seeking out relevant knowledge and skill building opportunities.

My aim is to inspire and empower others and create a positive legacy within my community.

Jane Hinds TITLE: Sport and Recreation Coordinator, Corangamite Shire Council PROJECT: Farmers’ Night Out (Lead)

Key learnings The Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) has been so beneficial to me, personally, and professionally.

There have been many lessons throughout the year, particularly on program days.

These days were a wonderful opportunity to listen to guest speakers, get out and about within the community, and experience the knowledge and passion others have for our region.

Another key learning has been around supporting diversity and inclusion. As future leaders we need to embrace inclusive and diverse communities and lead by example.

We need to embrace the characteristics, experiences and other distinctions that make one person different from another and create an environment where people, regardless of differences, feel welcome, supported and valued. Creating inclusion for all has the power to strengthen and change lives.

Most significant change The program has allowed me to develop specific leadership skills, including improved strategic thinking, vision and strategy, and the ability to align projects and funding requests to regional priorities, data and strategies. Reflecting back

on the year, I am proud of my achievements and the lessons that came from delivering the Farmers’ Night Out project. There were many challenges faced along the way. Staying true to my core values - and the mental health and wellbeing of others turned challenging situations into productive and positive outcomes.

What comes next I will continue to challenge myself and volunteer my time within the community. I will continue to advocate and work on improving the health and wellbeing of those within the community through my work at Corangamite Shire.

Community Leadership is... the ability to engage to bring about positive change within the communities in which we live.

Mitchell Spencer TITLE:

Director of Broadvue Heights PTY LTD PROJECT: Farmers’ Night Out SPONSOR: Community Bank Port Fairy & District Key learnings This year’s Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) has transformed my perspective on leadership.

Engaging with leaders from various sectors - business, community, and government - has broadened my understanding of the diverse nature of leadership. I’ve learned to appreciate multiple perspectives, which has significantly enhanced my problem-solving and creative thinking skills.

The experiential nature of the program, especially interacting with regional community leaders and grappling with real community issues, has also deepened my sense of leadership and sense of community responsibility. It’s been enlightening to see how leaders navigate complex challenges and create impact

and has inspired me to apply some of these insights in my future endeavours.

Most significant change My journey through the program has led to significant personal and professional growth. The varied program days, which covered topics including ethical leadership, inclusive communities, project management, and innovation, have expanded my ideas about what effective leadership entails.

I’ve gained a newfound confidence in my ability to lead, think strategically, and drive change. This confidence stems not just from the knowledge gained, but also from the practical experiences and

the feedback from peers and mentors alike. I’ve become more adept at understanding and leveraging diversity, which I believe is crucial for any successful leader.

What comes next Buoyed by the growth and experiences from the program, I am excited to announce my plans to start a business consultancy in the coming year. This venture will focus on developing my community by helping organisations develop leadership capabilities, foster innovation, and navigate change effectively.

I look forward to applying the lessons learned and the networks formed during this program to make a meaningful impact in the business world.

Cate Corbet TITLE: Business Analyst, Southern Grampians Shire Council PROJECT: Community Climate Network Scoping (Lead)

Key learnings Participating in the Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program this year has provided a crucial lens through which I can comprehend the region. There have been brilliant learnings from guest speakers and my peers as we’ve uncovered a broad variety of topics.

We’ve been offered continued opportunities for introspection, which has developed awareness of my skills and strengths, as well as areas for improvement. Through taking up the lead role on my project team, I have realised that with the right team, I enjoy thinking strategically and working collaboratively.

Most significant change This year’s journey with the program has brought about a transformation in my perspective. Recognising the responsibility that comes with my privileges, I’ve come to understand that they can be harnessed to amplify positive change. Through advocacy and constructive action, I can leverage my position to uplift those who may not share the same advantages. It’s been fantastic to be able to work on a future-facing project and put that into practice as the program has progressed.

What comes next Having formed such a fantastic network of people in the region will stand me in great stead to continue working in the community space. For the community-led Climate Network, it’s only just beginning.

My learnings, particularly around advocacy and community engagement, will assist me in the Network’s establishment.

Stepping out, I feel both confident and curious. I’d like to thank Southern Grampians Shire Council for supporting my participation in the program.

Dr. Emma Shortis TITLE: Senior Researcher, The Australia Institute PROJECT: Community Climate Network Scoping SPONSOR: Corangamite Shire Council Key learnings When I first interviewed for the Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program), my family and I had only been living in the Great South Coast for a few months. I knew very little about the region and its communities, economy and environment.

This year, I’ve learnt so much about this complex region and its vibrant communities, much of which has surprised me, and much of which I would never have been exposed to without the opportunity of the program. That level of understanding is critical to effective community leadership. Effective community leaders must understand their communities beyond the surface level, and know that regional Australia

– despite efforts to paint it that way – isn’t divided into simple binaries. I’m very grateful to Corangamite Shire for welcoming me to the Great South Coast!

Most significant change The biggest change for me has been the local community we’ve been supported to build through the program. We’ve created the most extraordinary friendships and networks.

That’s something that would have been impossible for me to build without the program.

The relationships we’ve built through our project team

in particular are the kind of friendships that it would take decades to build.

What comes next Practically, our community project – the Community Climate Network Scoping Project – was always planned in phases. The first phase, and the publication of our report which establishes the need for a community-led Climate Network, is now complete, but our involvement is far from over! I will continue to support, and advocate for, the establishment of a communityled Climate Network in the Great South Coast.

Community Leadership is... noisy but not loud, a little messy but full of joy, sometimes difficult but critical to vibrant, thriving democracy.

Cathryn Walder TITLE:

ommunity Engagement Coordinator, C Youth Live4Life

PROJECT: Community Climate Network Scoping (Lead) SPONSOR: The AL Lane Foundation Key learnings I have gained a wider perspective about the variety and individuality of what constitutes community leadership. This was most evident when listening to and engaging with such a wide range of guest speakers, and through the role modelling of my fellow participants. While there are commonalities in leadership, it is the unique values, strengths and knowledge of individuals that makes a strong leader.

Phrases and concepts throughout the year, such as ‘assume positive intentions,’ and ‘leadership is about action, not titles’ has supported my individual growth and development. The learnings about radical candor, consultation and evidence informed decision making have also been hugely impactful and long lasting.

Most significant change For me, this has a lot to do with my increased belief in my ability to be a strong leader.

My capacity to ‘lead well’ and the confidence to bring my unique self to my leadership approaches has grown significantly. I am equipped and prepared to continue my journey as a leader. Community leaders can be authentic, considerate, vulnerable, and fun to be around - and still achieve great things. Exploring leadership with such an insightful and encouraging group has provided me a great network of allies.

What comes next I will enact these newly found and strengthened leadership qualities into my life, my work, and my community. My plan is to spend more time on the balcony and use and refine the tools I have gained to be a strategic, considered, and thoughtful leader. I will be specifically seeking out opportunities to contribute to a local community group or organisation as a board member.

Community Leadership is... the true spirit of contributing and connecting to create change and positive impact.

Nicole Wood TITLE: Travel Smart Officer, Warrnambool City Council PROJECT: Community Climate Network Scoping (Lead)

Key learnings The Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) has allowed me to consolidate my skills and knowledge. It has provided me with a range of tools that I’ve been able to put into practice during the program days and in my workplace.

The program has drawn a cross section of participants from the region which gives me an appreciation of the diversity within our communities. Connecting with fellow participants has been an opportunity to create

networks and get a deeper understanding of the various forms of leadership that exist.

I have enjoyed being part of an environment which is assisting us all to reach our full potential.

Most significant change The most significant change for me is the clarity I now have around my values. I have always had a strong set of values, which framed my life but I didn’t really understanding how or why. I now have the confidence to continue to live and work with integrity and honesty.

What comes next It is with great enthusiasm that I continue to develop my community leadership. My project group’s generosity in sharing their knowledge and skills is greatly appreciated. I will take this new knowledge into the next phase of the Community Climate Change Network scoping project.

Community Leadership is... small actions which do make a big difference to our community and our region.

Rachel Cameron TITLE:

Communications Coordinator, South West Healthcare PROJECT: Community Climate Network Scoping

Key learnings Continued learning is fundamental in community leadership, as our world and our communities are constantly evolving. Staying adaptable, empathetic, optimistic, and open minded is essential to leaving a legacy as a community leader.

Learning about the Great South Coast region has revealed much I wasn’t previously aware of. Local, modern, innovative practices will inspire current and new generation’s opportunities to build upon. The region is on the precipice of something great and I’m proud to be part of it.

Most significant change After completing this program, I have recognised a shift in my own perspective. I am now more open to new ideas and I am also thinking more innovatively. I am lucky to have heard from impressive local experts, taking home golden nuggets from the knowledge and information they shared with us. I can confidently say that I have learnt the most from fellow LGSC participants. I have learnt from their broad life experience.

What comes next Our generous guest speakers have highlighted the desperate need for passionate volunteers across the region. I feel it is a chance for me to contribute skills, time and energy to causes that matter, while helping to foster positive change.

Ambitiously, I would like to donate design skills to not-forprofit organisations that align with my values.

Claudia Klunker TITLE: Young Stock Manager, Elm Banks Holstein PTY LTD PROJECT: Fruit Rescue (Lead) SPONSOR: Gardiner Foundation Key learnings There are two big things I will take away from the Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program). The first, is the tools needed to establish and manage a successful project within our community. The second is learning how to become a better community leader.

Visiting Parliament of Victoria was a real highlight for me, as we were able to experience the ins and outs of politics.

Working together with my fellow participants within our community project or on program days was very beneficial to me. We were able to bounce ideas and thoughts off each other, without being judged. The program creates an amazing safe space for all its participants.

Most significant change The program provided us with a broad network of connections within our communities, to help get our projects off the ground. We will benefit from those connections for a long time. I’m incredibly proud of my project team, five amazing people putting their hearts and minds together and achieving in a very short time, one big community project. The project, Fruit Rescue, was a massive shift for me within the program.

It helped me step out of my comfort zone. I tackled my fear of public speaking, took part in radio interviews, and connected with members of the public via social media. I learnt how to put boundaries and daily routines in place in my current employment role, and gained value time management and stress management techniques.

What comes next The program delivered personal growth in spades.

I really took a liking towards project management, which I had never done before. I am hoping to be able to do more project management in the near future and bring further skills into my workplace. I will also be continuing the legacy of Fruit Rescue with some of my team members, and hope it will become well established within our community.

Community Leadership is... bringing people together to create a big impact within our community.

Mark Barling TITLE: IT Facilitator, Mpower PROJECT: Fruit Rescue (Lead)

Key learnings I enrolled in the Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) with specific goals in mind. I wanted to enhance my self-confidence and also improve my public speaking and presentation skills.

The program gave me the necessary tools to accomplish my objectives. These lessons and tools came via the valuable presentations delivered by numerous experts. I also gained valuable knowledge from my fellow participants.

Something else I was surprised to learn was just how generous local businesses can be within the community. And the significance of teamwork within projects was also driven home throughout the program.

Most significant change The most noteworthy transformation for me was learning to adopt an attitude of active listening. I am also addressing challenges with a sense of greater receptiveness and open-mindedness, consistently bearing in mind that one cannot ascertain the personal circumstances of one’s colleagues, and what may be going on in their lives.

What comes next Completing the program has heightened my motivation to pursue leadership roles within my workplace. The program has equipped me with the necessary skills and selfconfidence, and I now feel

prepared to take on professional growth opportunities.

Additionally, the program has reinvigorated my interest in exploring more volunteering opportunities, such as committee roles, communitybased projects or working with community-based organisations.

Finally, I would like to sincerely express my gratitude and appreciation to my employer, Mpower, for giving me the opportunity to participate in the program. I am especially thankful to my direct manager, Trudy Marr, for showing confidence in my skills and motivating me to embark on this endeavor.

Courtney Mathew TITLE:

PROJECT: Fruit Rescue

Key learnings A constant thread throughout the program was that leadership is not always from the front.

Many people in our community are leading in spaces that aren’t traditional positions of power.

Permission-based leadership is built on a foundation of trust, highlighting the power of vulnerability. It’s important to keep this frame approaching new situations.

Our community leaders are so generous with their time and this year I reached out to gain governance insights I may not have otherwise.

Most significant change Understanding that privilege isn’t just about money, but that some experiences I’ve had and knowledge I’ve developed I’ve taken for granted. What is simple for some, is difficult for others and it’s important to be understanding with everybody.

I realised I can’t do everything, at least not at the same time.

It has been an incredibly busy year and so the biggest change is remembering the need to stop and enjoy the flowers.

I’m grateful for the support of Wannon Water in allowing me the space and time to participate in this program.

What comes next I’m eager to play a more strategic role in involving a more diverse range of people in the Warrnambool Community Garden. This might look like mentoring or collaborating with younger people in our community.

I’m looking forward to growing my governance skills and giving back to community on a board level. I am hopeful the Observership Program will help to keep my focus on learning.

Public Sector Employee PROJECT: Fruit Rescue SPONSOR: The Thomas O’Toole Foundation Key learnings The Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) built my leadership skills, while simultaneously creating a series of projects to hand back to the community. The program stimulated my insights and also taught me the value of critical thinking, from which to build a solid foundation and navigate the opportunities of leadership.

Most significant change The program increased my leadership toolkit and challenged my perceptions.

I was exposed to a previously invisible network of people and organisations. I now understand how unconscious thought and perceptions can have an impact on our experience of the every day world. I was also able to clarify the values held by different stakeholders within our community.

What comes next I have the tools to continue my leadership journey with confidence. I will use my skills and attributes to contribute to the community and continue to volunteer with our community project.

Key learnings My motivation for completing the program was to build a connection to the region and to learn how to be a leader in the community. The Leadership Great South Coast Community Leadership Program (the program) certainly made me realise the challenges the region faces and gave me much food for thought as to where and how I might be able to help in our community. The program days were very insightful, offering a broader view of the local community, as presented by community leaders.

Delivering our community project and seeing it come to life was incredibly rewarding, especially the encouragement from members of the public and different organisations. I was taught how to engage with people in a meaningful and collaborative way.

Most significant change My most significant change has been a shift in my way of thinking, both personally and professionally. My confidence grew throughout the year, my skillset expanded and my perceptions were challenged.

The program gave me the ability to connect with so many different people in different areas within the region. I was able to meet and interact with amazing people who guided me to find my ‘why’. I was inspired by the presenters throughout the program, they were passionate speakers.

What comes next The program has given me the tools to continue my personal and professional growth. I will use the skills and tools I have learnt throughout the program to continue to discover how I can contribute to the community in a meaningful way. I will continue to volunteer with our community project.

LGSC History Leadership Great South Coast is an example of an inspiring community organisation, that develops and supports our future leaders.

In 2008, work began to establish a community leadership program for the Great South Coast region.

Led by Josie Black, OAM, passionate regional leaders joined forces to assess our region’s appetite for a community leadership development program, research program models and instigate state funding discussions.

This original work was informed by Josie’s research, which highlighted the need for a regional community fund and the growing need for developing our community leaders’ skills, knowledge and abilities.

In 2009, to help develop our aspiring community leaders, and following

community consultation, a steering committee was established.

The committee’s goal was to create a program (based on the Williamson Leadership Program model) which allowed leadership development to occur via a supportive, structured, experiential program tailored to our region’s needs.

Later in 2009, a business plan was established, and a lobbying strategy initiated to attract State Government funding. Thanks to the passion and determination of the original steering committee, initial funding was secured in 2012.

The inaugural LGSC program began in May 2012 and now runs annually from February to December, attracting up to 20 aspiring leaders. With 168 alumni, we are growing in numbers, strength and reputation.

Regional Leadership In 1989 the Hugh Williamson Trustees established and funded the Williamson Community Leadership Program (WCLP) based in Melbourne. Re-named in 2000 to Leadership Victoria the program continues to evolve fostering and developing a new generation of leaders.

The WCLP was originally modelled on a Chicago-based program. Leadership Greater Chicago has been operating

on a proven model for 30 years, cultivating Chicago’s business, public and civic leaders through a deeper understanding of the issues facing their community and each other, building a better Chicago.

In 1996 the first regional Community Leadership Program commenced in Gippsland. Victoria now has nine regional Community Leadership Programs with Leadership Great South Coast being one of them.
