COMMUNITY YOUNG LOCALS BUDDING LOCAL PEREGIAN TEEN AUTHOR PUBLISHES BOOK #2 At just 13 years old, Kashyap Dhital, a Peregian Springs local, has achieved the remarkable feat of publishing his second book, "The Dragons of Magnetia." This follows the success of his debut, "The Explorers Diary," written when he was 11 in Grade 5. Kashyap tells the story of Prince Julian, seventh in line for the throne, who possesses the rare ability to control the four Elements of Nature. Yet, this gift feels more like a curse as he must prepare to defeat the prophesized dragons, whose awakening is imminent. With the unexpected arrival of these fierce creatures, Julian and his companions embark on a treacherous journey filled with unpredictable turns and shattering secrets.

Building Community through Arts Coolum heARTs Inc, a non-profit organization in the local community, provides affordable opportunities for access to arts, music, and life skills. Their diverse range of activities are sure to uncover hidden talents, and you'll have the chance to connect with fascinating individuals from various backgrounds. They provide affordable entry to art and lifestyle programs and activities for everyone in the community throughout the school term. Members are charged just $10 per session, while non-members can also participate for $20 per session. A gold coin donation is required for Meditation and Women’s Resilience sessions. Men’s Resilience is complimentary as it takes place off-site. Their programs are held in a variety of locations in the heart of Coolum Beach, although the majority are held in “the Shed”, corner of Elizabeth Street and Sunrise Avenue.

Funding Flows, Music Grows Fourteen artists, arts groups, and creative businesses, with talents that entertain, inspire, and educate, are set to share in almost $90,000 to enhance and advance their practices thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council’s latest Regional Arts Development Fund. Coolum Beach musician Andrew Veivers said he was ecstatic to secure the grant and will use it to write and tour reimagined Spanish guitar compositions. “The compositions developed during my project Guitarra y Cuarteto will enjoy seeing the light of day for the first time during a series of performances on the Sunshine Coast in May 2024. “Local events company Red Chair will be presenting the performances as a part of their COMPASS PROJECT concert series. We are incredibly excited to be a part of that programme and hope you all come along to one of our shows, enjoy the fruits of our labour and say ‘hi’.”

Destructive Pests Caught in Record Numbers Invasive species are being trapped and removed in record numbers across the Sunshine Coast, in a united effort between Sunshine Coast Council and the community to protect our region’s biodiversity. During the year Council staff removed 91 foxes through trapping across the region, alongside other fox control strategies including spring-activated baiting and den detection using conservation dogs. Meanwhile, community trapping contributed to 1315 Indian myna birds being removed from our environment. Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said Indian myna birds were highly territorial and would out-compete our native species for food and nesting sites. “When residents learn about invasive species and how to protect their place, the whole region can enjoy a stronger environment and biodiversity.” Find out about our region’s invasive animals and how you can help on Council’s website.

Tales of the deep, swimming carnival trophies, paper bathing costumes and surf stories are just some of the things missing from Sunshine Coast heritage collections. Sunshine Coast Council Coordinator Heritage Services Peter Connell said he was hoping the community would come forward with items, stories and photos that would help build our regional water sporting knowledge. “Objects we’re looking for could be anything from diving gear and locally made surfboards to surf wear, swimming carnival trophies, medals or ribbons, even boats and canoes,” Mr Connell said. “We’re also keen to hear tales and recollections from the community such as what it was like learning to swim in their local creek or taking part in the school swimming carnival as these really help bring our heritage to life. Peregian Springs Local gained a national honour From community safety to business, politics, surf lifesaving, charity work, animal welfare and the arts … a collection of inspirational Sunshine Coast residents have been recognised in the 2024 Australia Day Honours list.

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson congratulated the recipients, saying their awards reflected outstanding service to their communities and nation. “They have all excelled in their respective professions and pursuits and enriched the lives of others,’’ Mayor Jamieson said.

Nicole Cleary, of Peregian Springs, received a OAM for service to animal welfare. She has been the manager of the Noosa Shelter for RSPCA Queensland since 1995. Allen Reed, of Maroochydore, received a OAM for service to the community of Maroochydore. Assistant Commissioner Gary McCormack, of Birtinya, received an Australian Fire Service Medal. He was commander of state operations during significant parts of the Queensland bushfire season in 2018, and commander of North Coast regional operations during the major 2019 Peregian bushfire, the 2020 K’gari bushfire & multiple floods in 2022.

“The broad array of fields which this year’s Sunshine Coast award recipients come from also highlights the diversity of talent and excellence we have in our region. “We are immensely proud of the work they have done and continue to do for our community and congratulate them on their achievements.’’ Leading criminologist and researcher Professor Lorraine Mazerolle, of Warana, was one of only four people appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia. Bronwyn Edinger, CEO of The Events Centre Caloundra, was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). Sunshine Coast Councillor Winston Johnston, of Maleny, received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to local government, and to the community of the Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast surf lifesaving and charity champion, Tim Ryan, received an OAM for his inspirational work in our community. Also honoured with an OAM was Morgan Parker, for his contribution to business.

COMMUNITY LOCAL UPDATE Safety upgrades to commence at busy beach crossing Safer pedestrian access is on the cards, with construction due to start on major upgrades to a busy Coolum Beach intersection. Ninderry MP Dan Purdie said work is due to start on the $1million project on David Low Way, which will include a new pedestrian refuge and a dedicated right turn lane into Scrub Road. “The community have been calling for better pedestrian access in this area for some time, so it’s great to see these important safety upgrades finally get underway,” Mr Purdie said. As part of the works, the existing speed limit of 50km/hr at the Scrub Road intersection will be extended to approximately 100 metres sought of the Mona Vista Court intersection. Mr Purdie said works will include minor shoulder widening, realigning footpaths and kerb ramps, updating linemarking and signage, new street lighting, and speed signage. He said he was pleased to learn the new lighting will be installed at a lower height to minimise potential impact on nesting turtles and other beachside fauna.

The work, which will get underway in the coming weeks, will be done primarily during the evening, between 6pm-6am, Sunday to Thursday, and is expected to take two months to complete, weather permitting. During construction, the Wilkinson Park bus stop will be temporarily located to the northern side of the intersection.

One simple idea and a whole lot of passion has created a legacy that’s removed more than 250,000 pieces of litter from Sunshine Coast beaches at a critical time during turtle nesting season. And now it’s time to celebrate a decade of helping turtle hatchlings make it to the ocean, thanks to a partnership between Sunshine Coast Council, Reef Check Australia, Unitywater, SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Aquarium and Noosa Council. The community is invited to come together to tidy up their local beach as part of the 10th anniversary of the annual Clean Up For The Hatchlings event on Saturday, February 3. Volunteers can register now to pick up litter at various beach locations between Noosa and Caloundra from 6am to 7.30am.

There will also be a chance to score a prize for volunteering including vouchers for SeaLife and Saltwater Ecotours. To register for your local Clean Up for the Hatchlings, visit events.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

From 8am, participants are invited to Coopers Lookout Park, south of the Kawana Surf Club, to enjoy a free barbecue, participate in a prize draw, take part in other fun activities and, most importantly, to weigh and sort the collected debris. The event will be single-use plastic-free, so make sure you bring a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, gloves, enclosed footwear, and sun protection. Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox said that while every day is a possible beach clean-up opportunity, he was delighted to see our community coming together to help protect these threatened species every year.

There’s a simple way Sunshine Coast ratepayers can put themselves in the running to save $1000 off their bill. Sunshine Coast Finance Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said ratepayers could give themselves a chance to win with just two easy steps. “Ratepayers who pay their rates online and sign up to receive their future rate notices by email will put themselves in the running to win $1000 off their next rate bill,” Cr Hungerford said. “Ratepayers who already receive their rate notices by email will automatically be in the running to win if they pay their current rate bill via one of the convenient secure online options which are included on your rate notice.

Plant-based medicine offerings to grow on the Sunshine Coast A 100 per cent Australian-owned medicinal cannabis company has opened a new distribution facility on the Sunshine Coast.

“Sunshine Coast Council has provided business support measures over a number of years assisting us with finding potential sites, investment support and promotion through its Sunshine Coast Economic Resurgence Plan.

The new facility at Coolum Beach is fully licenced to provide Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) compliant products to any Australian-licenced pharmacy, which can then dispense the products on prescription.

“We look forward to growing our presence on the Sunshine Coast and continuing our mission to build locally owned and operated plant-based medicine businesses, in a socially responsible and environmentally aware way.”

Broken but out of warranty? Your consumer guarantee rights may still apply The ACCC is encouraging Australians to take advantage of their consumer guarantee rights under the Australian Consumer Law when dealing with businesses over defective products or poorly performed services, following more than 28,000 reports and enquiries to the ACCC last year about consumer guarantees or warranties. Motor vehicles, electronics and whitegoods, and homewares were the most reported categories of consumer products about which consumer guarantee or warranty issues were raised with the ACCC.

We know that many people don’t feel sufficiently knowledgeable or confident to challenge a business when they believe something they have purchased isn’t of acceptable quality,” Ms Lowe said. “Information about people’s consumer rights is available online. This includes information about contacting a business to fix a problem and a complaint letter tool to help consumers prepare a written complaint. If you can’t resolve the issue after contacting the business there are organisations that may be able to help individuals to resolve a complaint.”

“When you buy a product or service from a business, you have automatic rights called ‘consumer guarantees’ under the Australian Consumer Law and they exist regardless of any warranty offered by the business,” ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said.

Consumer guarantees do not apply if the consumer simply changed their mind, found the product cheaper somewhere else, or decided they no longer liked it or had no use for it. Consumer guarantees also do not apply if a consumer misused the product in a way that caused the problem, or knew of, or was made aware of, the fault before buying the product.

The ACCC does not resolve individual disputes about a consumer’s rights to a repair, replacement or refund. Consumers seeking assistance with a dispute should contact their local state or territory consumer protection agency.

“Even if a voluntary warranty, manufacturer’s warranty, or extended warranty has expired, you may still be able to use your consumer guarantee rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which don’t have a specific expiry date.”

COMMUNITY LOCAL UPDATE Don’t lose money to a side hustle scam Australians looking to earn extra money through online ‘side hustles’ are being urged to beware of scammers, after reported losses to Scamwatch for jobs and employment scams almost tripled in 2023. Jobs and employment scams were the fastest growing scam type last year, with Australians reporting over 4,800 job scams to Scamwatch in 2023 leading to losses of $24.7 million, compared to $8.7 million in 2022. Reports to Scamwatch show that these scams are disproportionally affecting younger Australians aged 18-44 years old, including students looking for parttime work. People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds including non-resident visa holders are also particularly at risk. “As the cost of living continues to put pressure on households, many people are looking for opportunities to earn extra money, and scammers are taking advantage of this,” ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said. “Scammers are targeting people looking for online work in their spare time, promising them guaranteed income from jobs that include boosting the ratings of products and services through an online platform. In some cases, the jobs are as simple as liking posts on social media such as TikTok videos.”

The victims often report that they responded to an advertisement on social media about a job opportunity. The scammer will then contact the victim directly via encrypted messaging apps such as WhatsApp. “The scam operates similar to an online game, with victims reporting that they are pressured to make an initial investment of their own money along with ongoing payments in order to ‘level up’ and receive a higher income which they never receive,” Ms Lowe said. “If you see an ad on social media promising guaranteed income with flexible hours, or are contacted out of the blue on WhatsApp about a job opportunity, ask yourself if it could be a scam?”

In 2020 with two kids about to enter high school & family ties to this area, we decided to leave the States and head back to Oz for our next chapter and there was no hesitation that the perfect fit for our family was here living in Peregian Springs, we have not looked back.
