COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS

Give Hope This Christmas

Christmas is back on the table for Sunshine Coast locals doing it tough thanks to the generosity of The Everyday Foundation’s Hope Hampers campaign.

This year, the charity’s annual Christmas initiative aims to provide 550 hampers filled with special treats, presents, decorations and everyday food staples.

The Everyday Foundation is raising much needed funds to make this campaign possible with the hampers expected to impact more than 1500 locals struggling with food insecurity and financial strain

With cost-of-living pressures at record highs, demand for food relief has surged across the Coast and The Everyday Foundation is bracing for one of its busiest Christmases yet.

General manager Karen Gullo said The Everyday Foundation was expecting an influx of nominations this year with rising costs hitting locals hard.

“The Everyday Foundation’s mission is to meet people in their place of need and Hope Hampers is a great way for the community to join with us and support their neighbours.”

Putting together the hampers is no easy feat, but it’s made possible by a small army of volunteers, local schools and community groups who lend a hand.

Some of the ways the Sunshine Coast community can support Hope Hampers:

Donate – purchase the cost of a hamper here: https://everyday.org.au/hopehampers/give/

Volunteer to pack and wrap hampers – submit your availability here: https://everyday.org.au/hopehampers/volunteer/

Nominate someone in need – know someone who would benefit from receiving a hamper? https://everyday.org.au/hopehampers/nominate/

UNSAFE CHRISTMAS

TOYS PULLED FROM SHELVES IN SEASON SAFETY BLITZ

The Queensland Government is delivering a festive season safety blitz, with a Queensland wide compliance crackdown on Christmas toys and novelties leading to 23 unsafe products being removed from shop shelves.

All compliance issues identified to date relate to button batteries, including:

Six products not containing a mandatory button battery warning label

17 products not having the mandatory warning label and failing to have a child resistant battery compartment, as required by law.

Seized items include flower-themed solar lights, mini piano toys, snow globes, and plastic pinwheels.

Any concerns about unsafe toys should be reported to the OFT at www.qld.gov.au/fairtrading or by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68).

One of the most common questions asked in online community groups is what type of snake is this. We found a great snake identification Australia facebook group that has approved ID’ers and may help you get your answer promptly Link to group is below.

SPECIAL RETURN TO MAKE NYE DOUBLE THE FUN

Locals and visitors can celebrate New Year’s Eve with a bang at three locations across the Sunshine Coast, with family friendly timings and the return of the midnight fireworks display.

Sunshine Coast Council is re-introducing its midnight fireworks display in Mooloolaba, alongside other traditional events.

Council is supporting four fireworks displays at three locations – Coolum at 8.30pm, Caloundra at 9.30pm and Mooloolaba at 8.30pm and midnight.

The early fireworks in Caloundra and Coolum will be part of family-friendly celebrations.

In Mooloolaba, the two displays will be fired from an offshore barge and will be visible from multiple viewing points, from Maroochydore Beach to the top of Alexandra Headland to Point Cartwright.

Police remind parents of responsibilities when gifting e-scooters and ebikes this Christmas

Queensland Police Service (QPS) is urging parents to learn and understand their legal responsibilities when considering gifting e-scooters or ebikes this Christmas, reminding families that purchasing an e-mobility device does not grant children permission to ride unsupervised.

With the continued rise in popularity of PMDs across Queensland, police are reinforcing that safe use begins at home, with parents and carers making informed choices, understanding the rules and legislation, and actively supervising young riders.

Road Policing Group Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler reiterates that while e-scooters and ebikes can be exciting gifts, they require active parental oversight, not a ‘setand-forget’ approach.

“E-scooters and e-bikes might look like the perfect Christmas surprise, but they come with responsibilities,” Chief Superintendent Wheeler said.

Police continue to see risky behaviour among inexperienced riders, and remind families that safe riding includes: wearing an approved helmet riding responsibly and following the road rules being alert around roads, driveways, and pedestrians keeping speeds appropriate and controlled understanding that PMDs are not toys.

For more information about e-mobility rules, safe riding, and responsibilities, visit Street Smarts Queensland.
