COUNCIL UPDATE Experience nature through the eyes of young artists This summer, the Wild HeART Student Art Prize Finalists’ Exhibition Trail will see Maroochy Bushland Botanic Garden come alive with vibrant artworks created by local children and young people. The free exhibition trail invites you to wander among 22 incredible art pieces by talented nature-lovers, aged 5 to 18 years. As you explore the larger-than-life outdoor gallery, you will encounter graceful whale sharks, shy bandicoots, colourful butterflies, birds galore and more. Each piece showcases our youngest residents’ love of nature and native Australian species. This year, visitors can vote for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice award which will be announced on 21 January. Come and see the finalists 8yrs and under: Congratulations Bailee, Mikayla, Ruth and Anouka 13yrs and under: Congratulations Aimee, Sonam, Ronen, Gabe, Henry, Josie, John, Alyssa, Mia and Sophie 18yrs and under: Congratulations Keahi, Natasha, Emma, Luka, Serenity, Kaiya and Angelica The Wild HeART Finalists’ Exhibition Trail is open until February 6, 2026, in the lower Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden during daylight hours. The Botanic Garden is centrally located in the Sunshine Coast region at Palm Creek Road, Tanawha. Accessible by car, coach and bicycle. There is plenty of parking available, including accessible parking. The gardens are open 7.00am to 6.00pm November – March.

GOVERNMENT UPDATE AUSTRALIANS URGED TO SHOP AROUND FOR A BETTER VALUE ELECTRICITY PLAN Households that have been on the same electricity plan for more than three years are paying on average $221 per year more than customers on new plans, the ACCC’s latest Electricity Market Inquiry report reveals. The ACCC’s analysis shows that a household with average electricity usage that moved from a regulated safety net (default offer) plan to one of the many cheaper plans retailers offer to new and switching customers would save between about $100 and $250 per year, depending on the region they live in.

COMMUNITY UPDATE Major crackdown targets illegal e-mobility use across the state The Queensland Government is making Queensland safer, recently announcing 2,124 fines have already been issued as part of the Queensland Police Service’s major statewide crackdown on illegal and dangerous emobility devices. Since November, Queensland Police have been running Operation Surety, a statewide road safety initiative targeting dangerous and illegal emobility behaviour, particularly during the busy school holiday period. Fines issued to date (3 November to 23 December): Total fines: 2,124 Top five offences: 1.Helmet: 1,652 2.Prohibited road: 207 3.Passenger: 72 4.Exceed speed: 68 5.Fail to stop: 61 Tragically, 14 lives have already been lost on Queensland roads this year involving e-mobility devices. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie said the level of non-compliance by some e-scooter and e-bike users was deeply concerning. “Too many riders are deliberately ignoring the road rules, putting themselves and others at serious risk,” Minister Purdie said.
“We will continue to put community safety first to ensure Queensland’s roads and footpaths remain as safe as possible.”
