AUSTRALIAN ADVENTUREBREAKING THE UMBILICAL CORD

Peregian Springs local and first time author, Darrel Roche, has just published his first book at age 75, which he started writing back in 1982 when he was a lighthouse keeper.

Have you ever yearned for freedom and adventure? Darrel and his two mates certainly did, and they experienced plenty of it during a fourteen-month odyssey through Outback Australia in 1970 and 1971 in Darrel's trusty Landcruiser.

Escaping suburban boredom and 9-to-5 monotony, where their only travel involved back-and-forth trips to work, Darrel and his two companions cut the umbilical cord to their jobs, families, and security to embark on a journey of 24-hour, 7-day-aweek freedom, in the era before computers and mobile phones dominated our lives.

Come and join Darrel on that adventure

Just leave all your cares and worries behind, jump onboard to face the unknown together!

DOUBLE BARREL FOR AWARD WINNING AFL CLUB

Coolum’s local AFL club, the Coolum Beach Breakers Junior AFL have served up a double barrel, taking out two top gongs in the AFL’s annual awards.

Ninderry MP Dan Purdie has congratulated the Club after being announced the Qld Best AFL Club for 2024.

Dan and Club President Tyson Smalley (right) with Amy Sheehan, the winner of the Toyota AFL National Volunteer of the Year Award

But the good news doesn’t stop there, with the Club’s media manager, Amy Sheehan, being awarded the Toyota AFL National Volunteer of the Year Award in the media category.

Amy, who is also a team manager, has been looking after the Club’s media and communications beat finalists from all other states and territories to take out the prestigious award. She will now get to travel to the Grand Final in Melbourne for a three day grand final experience.

“This is just awesome news for the Coolum Beach Breakers, and caps off a fantastic year for the Club,” Mr Purdie said.

Earlier this year, the Club secured $500,000 in funding for long overdue changerooms, as part of ongoing plans for a major makeover and redevelopment of its current home, at Coolum State High School.

I’ve enjoyed working closely with the Club over the past few years on the new masterplan for the site, and we’ve been making some great progress,” Mr Purdie.

“Given the hard work, commitment and dedication of the Club and all its volunteers, there’s a bright future ahead for our junior breakers.”

COMMUNITY AWARENESS

CONSUMERS WARNED OF POSSIBLE SAFETY RISKS WITH THE USE OF BABY BOTTLE SELF-FEEDING DEVICES AND CHILDREN'S CAR SEAT HEAD STRAPS

The ACCC is investigating the safety of aftermarket children’s car seat head straps and baby bottle self-feeding devices, after the Assistant Treasurer issued Safety Warning Notices for each of the products.

“The ACCC is investigating the safety of both of these products to determine if they will or may cause injury to any person, and the extent to which regulatory action is needed to prevent their supply or mitigate safety risks,”

ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe said

“Aftermarket children’s car seat head straps are marketed as a support for sleeping children, but the safety warning notice issued about these products warns about the possible risk that in motor vehicle accidents they may cause severe head, neck, and spinal cord injuries.”

“Baby bottle self-feeding devices are designed to position bottles so liquid can flow into infants’ mouths without the assistance of a caregiver, which the safety warning notice warns may increase the possible risk of suffocation, aspiration pneumonia, choking or ear infection. This is because babies are unable to regulate the flow of liquid,” Ms Lowe said ”

“While the ACCC is not aware of any reports where these products have been directly linked to injuries or deaths in Australia, alarmingly there have been reports of fatalities overseas ”

Advice to consumers

Consumers who have purchased or own these products should immediately stop using them and dispose of them safely so that they cannot be used by anyone else

Advice to suppliers

The ACCC strongly advises suppliers of these products to conduct a risk assessment and take any action necessary to address any safety issues, which could include initiating a voluntary product safety recall and notifying the ACCC via the online form on the ACCC website.

LOCAL UPDATE

‘ACTION NOW’: JOIN WITH US TO HELP EASE THE CRISIS

Sunshine Coast residents are being encouraged to learn more about homelessness.

The theme this year is Action Now, and Council recognises that responding to homelessness is 'Everybody's Business' and requires all levels of government and community to work together

Strong Community Portfolio Councillor David Law encouraged residents to take action for all of our community.

“As in many other parts of Australia, Homelessness has increased on the Sunshine Coast by 54 per cent since the 2016 census,” Cr Law said.

Cr Law said a year on from the adoption of the Housing and Homelessness Action Plan, it is positive to see these outcomes already achieved.

“We still have a way to go, however we are on a strong path forward,” he said.

TIPS ON HOW YOU CAN HELP AND BE AN ALLY:

Be friendly – people living without a home often feel ignored, unseen, misunderstood and judged. Be kind, smile and say hello

Be educated – increase your awareness and understanding of causes and impacts of homelessness by visiting the Homelessness Australia and Q Shelter websites.

Be accommodating - 32.6 per cent of renters are experiencing rental stress. Consider renting a spare room, granny flat or your holiday house.

Be an ally – learn from people with lived experience. Visit www.streetup.com.au for more information.

Be an advocate – write to your State member calling for more social and affordable housing, emergency shelter options, funding for homelessness services.

Be a good neighbour – donate or volunteer. Contact a service in the Sunshine Coast Housing and Homelessness Directory and ask if they accept donations and what items they currently need Contact a local service and offer your time, skills, and support.

National recognition for Breakers Junior AFL

Congratulations to the Coolum Beach Breakers Junior AFL Club, who have been recognized with 2 impressive awards. As well as being awarded the best Qld AFL Club for 2024, club volunteer and team manager Amy Sheehan also took out the Toyota AFL National Volunteer of the Year (media category). This is fantastic news for the Club, which has been experiencing significant growth in recent years, including securing $500,000 earlier this year for new changerooms. Exciting times ahead!

Adult Crime, Adult Time

One of the biggest issues in our community is crime. As a former detective, I was on the front line in 2015 when the Labor government started watering down the laws, which resulted in the youth crime crisis now gripping our state. Our hard-working police are not to blame. With less police and weaker laws, it’s not surprising crime rates are increasing Last year alone, there were 289,657 victims of crime in Queensland. Something has to change.

That’s why the LNP have announced it’s Adult Crime, Adult Time policy. You can read more about this in my latest newsletter, but in short, the policy aims to restore consequences for actions, and hold repeat juvenile offenders who commit serious and violent crimes accountable.

This is an issue that affects us all, and I welcome your feedback. To have your say, you can scan the QR code on your newsletter, or complete the survey on my website Alternatively, you can contact me directly on 5406 7900 or email ninderry@parliament.qld.gov.au

WHISKY BOY - NOOSAVILLE

About & Opening Times

Whisky Boy is a modern Australian Kitchen and Bar Restaurant located in an ideal part of Noosaville with views of the Noosa River. They are open WedSun from 11.30am and Mon-Tues from 3 30pm for dine-in or takeaway

Location & Access

Located on the corner of Gympie Terrace and Thomas Street, there is ample free street parking and various car parks nearby, all close walking distance to the restaurant.

Service

Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Booking a table was easy via their website.

We were greeted and seated promptly and water was offered and served super quick with the menus. Overall service was friendly and efficient.

Food & Beverage

We heard about this restaurant as one of the “go to” places for steak, and decided to test out their Tuesday Night special deal. The steaks were cooked to our liking served with a Whisky Jus, as well as a small side salad, hot chips and a glass of house red The serving size was certainly enough for two adults, but we couldn’t resist trying some whisky so paired a shot of Canadian Whisky and Maple Liqueur with their Affogato, see image above.

Summary

It was raining heavily on the night, but that didn’t dampen the experience. The Tuesday Night special was extremely good value for money. We would return and try another type of steak and now we are Whisky converts, that’s a given!

Ways to assist would be watching your local supermarket specials, browsing your local Op shops/wardrobes for handbags etc.

PROPERTY hello

I am thrilled to announce that I've joined forces with Joel Hood Property, a market leader with an unmatched reputation. It’s a true privilege to collaborate with such a respected team, known for their exceptional service and deep market expertise.

As the year draws to a close, it's more important than ever to act swiftly if you're planning to make a move in 2024 With property marketing campaigns typically taking over 30 days to sell and settlements often stretching beyond 60 days, the window of opportunity is narrowing

The next few weeks are crucial If you’re considering selling, now is the time to prepare your property to ensure it captures buyers' attention before the holiday season kicks in The market can slow down significantly during this period, with many buyers and sellers taking a break, so getting ahead now can make all the difference.

First impressions matter, so one of the most effective ways to ensure your property stands out is by focusing on its street appeal Here’s how you can enhance your property’s curb appeal and make it irresistible:

Fix What's Broken: Address any visible issues like peeling paint, a damaged fence, or a cracked driveway These small repairs enhance your home's appearance and signal good maintenance

Update Features: Replace outdated elements like light fixtures, door handles, or your letterbox These upgrades refresh your home's look and add modern appeal Also, assess your garden for any plants that need replacing or areas needing attention.

Declutter: Remove clutter around your home's exterior, such as shoes, hoses, or excess garden ornaments. This creates a more spacious and inviting appearance.

Add Inviting Touches: After tidying up, consider adding a statement plant, colourful flowers, or a cozy porch seating area to create a welcoming vibe that connects with buyers.

If you’re looking to make a move, I’d love the opportunity to chat
