COMMUNITY EVENT SPOTLIG

SHOW UP FOR SHOWTIME!

Gates to the 2024 Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show open on Friday, June 14th, a public holiday for the Sunshine Coast Region dedicated to its festivities.

Hello Community Magazine spoke with Penny Walsh, the Show Office Manager, who emphasized community attendance is so important to sustain the event and retain the holiday.

The show is meticulously planned by the committee throughout the year to ensure inclusivity. In fact, not only is it the 5th largest agricultural show in Queensland, it’s the only fully inclusive event to run on the Sunshine Coast, even accommodating all abilities on the Ferris Wheel!

The event boasts numerous attractions, from free children's activities like puppet shows and petting zoos to traditional sheep sheering and even a Show Saloon for the Adults. Olympic-level showjumping is always a highlight in the main arena, as well as a Vintage Speedway Showcase and Freestyle Motorcross.

Visitors can bring and enjoy their own picnic basket whilst watching diverse entertainment and into the evening, enjoy an amazing choreographed fireworks display Over $100,000 has been invested in the entertainment.

Community groups like Rotary, Lions and Apex Clubs play a crucial role in the Show and a large portion of funds raised through the event are returned back into many local Community Groups on the Sunshine Coast

There are many parking options, including a free shuttle service from Nambour train station. In addition, a gold coin donation grants access to a cloakroom for your convenience.

The Sunshine Coast Show website offers lots of information and a comprehensive FAQs page.

Despite rising costs to run the Show, ticket prices have been kept as affordable as possible.

Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets online or at the gate to support this traditional Sunshine Coast community event.

NOOSA RIVER UPDATE

Maritime Safety Queensland moves to resolve boating issues on Noosa River

Following extensive stakeholder and community consultation since 2021, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is continuing to implement a suite of marine safety and pollution reforms for the Noosa River that commenced in September 2023.

The first stage saw a series of speed limitations introduced in the river. These were very successful, with good feedback from the community over the summer months.

MSQ will now move to the next stage of the reform process by issuing ‘notices to comply’ to owners of vessels that were identified as non-compliant in audits MSQ completed in the leadup to implementing the reforms.

In Stage 3, vessels that do not comply, or that are unseaworthy and abandoned, will be required to be removed from the river between May and August 2024.

Stage 4 of the program, commencing in July 2024, will see a ‘no anchoring’ area established for all vessels and applied to:

60m from the busy southern shore of Noosa River from Noosa Sound to the entrance to Lake Doonella across Noosa Sound and up to Woods Bay the “dog beach” area, south of the river entrance.

Vessels will be able to access the shoreline to set down and pick up passengers or to access restaurants and other popular areas on land, as long as they comply with the speed limits for this area, and do not anchor or cause obstructions or navigation hazards to other waterway users.

Stage 5, starting in October 2024, will see MSQ create a “no anchoring” area for unoccupied vessels over five metres in length, for a host of safety reasons.

The final Stage 6 will see a 28-day anchoring restriction introduced for Noosa waterways, commencing in March 2025, with a designated implementation period for vessel owners to comply by June 2025.

Further information on the management of vessels on the Noosa River management plans can be found on MSQ’s website.

Yaroomba Beach development approval cancelled

Residents now have greater clarity around what will be delivered on the Yaroomba Beach development site formerly owned by Sekisui House.

Sunshine Coast Council has received – and granted – a request by the new owners to cancel the development approval issued to Sekisui House.

Under the Planning Act 2016, this means that development approval no longer has effect and cannot be acted upon.

The site will revert to being governed by the Coolum Hyatt Integrated Resort and Residential Community (Hyatt Masterplan).

The Hyatt Masterplan allows for 330 dwellings onsite with a range of 2-4 storey buildings, up to a maximum height of 16 metres.

COMMUNITY AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

Local Author Helping Write to Self-Publish

Peregian Springs author Donna Munro has been writing all her life but only published her first book after turning 52.

“I realised I was over fifty and still yet to fulfil the dream of publishing a book. Four manuscripts lay in my filing cabinet gathering dust. I pulled out the most recent one The Zanzibar Moon. It had potential At least I hoped so I rewrote parts, completed more drafts, edited, and enlisted beta readers. I’d worked for a small publisher, was a graphic designer and figured I’d be able to self-publish. How hard could it be?”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing on the murky sea of self-publishing Donna said, “I knew much of the process but none of the pitfalls

But when I launched the book it was a success and I couldn’t have been happier.” It was such a joy holding that first book baby in her hands she wanted to share the experience with other writers.

While publishing that first book, Donna found that no book included all the selfpublishing steps. Some things she had to Google, others through researching multiple books It was frustrating

The meticulous notes she kept on the self-publishing process became a course she tutored for Romance Writers of Australia.

It went so well that she tutored the course again two years later, putting those notes and course ideas into a non-fiction book which became How to Self-Publish in Oz

How to Self-Publish in Oz was released in 2021. It continues to sell well with many people interested in publishing. She believes its success has been due to the screenshots of the process, links, tasks and templates. The book is also in colour so the images make the steps that much easier for the aspiring self-publisher. The book can be purchased at Annie’s Books on Peregian.

Donna has helped local authors achieve selfpublishing by doing book layouts, and covers and guiding them through the steps. All authors she works with form their own publishing business and retain profits.

“I enjoy helping writers with the things they can’t do but I teach them in a way that at some point they’ll be able to do most of it themselves. It’s their publishing business, not mine.”

HOME SCHOOLING

HOME EDUCATION EXPERT GROUP EOIs OPEN

A Queensland Home Education Expert Group will be established to advise government on changes to improve outcomes for home schooled children.

The group is being established to contribute to a stakeholder-informed review of Queensland’s approach to regulating home education through the Department’s Home Education Unit.

A majority of the group members (12) will be parents who currently have a child or young person registered for home education in Queensland. Parent members will be selected via an Expression of Interest process.

Up to three members will be nominees from established home education sector representative organisations with experience in engaging with the sector and government.

The group will be established on a time-limited basis for six months, including for the duration of the Review, and convene generally monthly until December 2024, noting the Review may consider ongoing stakeholder engagement mechanisms to liaise with government on home education matters.

The group will: provide a forum to share and learn from the home educating parent community and better understand their experiences of home education in Queensland; consider topical issues highlighted through consultation on the Bill such as delivery of a high-quality education and provision in the best interests of the child; broadly consider home education regulation; provide perspectives about supports for home education parents; and consider possible approaches for consultation with the home education sector following the Review.

SUNSHINE COAST UPDATE

For our community: landmark funding for Sunshine Coast’s Olympic venues

Three Sunshine Coast sporting venues have been given the green light to progress to tender following a funding commitment of almost $300 million by the Queensland and Australian governments.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said funding for the three sporting venues would be a game-changer for the region and a direct and welcome result of our role as Co-Host City of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“These venues will provide high-quality competition and training facilities for our local athletes, increase participation in sports and recreation across the region, and will have capacity to host major sporting events.

“I want to be very clear – these venues are being built for our community.

“They will provide a place to train, to play, to watch our favourite teams and to cheer on our kids from the sidelines.

“We’ve waited a very long time for the Sunshine Coast Stadium to be expanded. Construction of this venue is on track to start later this year, creating an estimated 650 jobs.”

The planning and design phase of the Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre and Mountain Bike Centre will continue to progress, with construction of those two venues proposed to start in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The majority of capital funding for the three venues will come from the Queensland and Australian governments, with Sunshine Coast Council set to assume ownership and management of these venues once complete.

A $148 million Sunshine Coast Stadium expansion, a $142 million new Indoor Sports Centre in Kawana and a $14 million Mountain Bike Centre at Parklands are on track to be delivered in 2027, with construction of the Sunshine Coast Stadium Expansion planned to start later this year. - 17 -

HOMES FOR QUEENSLANDERS

NEW LAWS STRENGHTEN RENTER RIGHTS

All forms of rent bidding are banned in Queensland, and property owners will only be able to increase rents once per year on their property, following the passing of new rental law reforms in State Parliament.

The Parliament recently passed the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024, strengthening the rights of Queensland renters.

Additional reforms in the Bill passed by Parliament will come into effect on a date to be set by proclamation, including:

protecting renters’ privacy by requiring 48 hours entry notice and a prescribed form to be used to apply for a rental home, with any information collected to be handled securely limiting reletting costs based on how long is left on a fixed term lease giving renters a fee-free option to pay rent and choice about how they apply for a rental property

improving the rental bond process by requiring claims to be supported by evidence.

The passage of the Bill also enables the government to develop a framework for parties to agree on installing modifications in rental properties, a Code of Conduct for the rental sector and a Portable Bond Scheme

The government will undertake consultation with the sector to develop these schemes.

Minister for Housing, Local Government, Planning and Minister for Public Works Meaghan Scanlon said, “One in three Queensland households rent, and these reforms are about making renting fairer, safer and easier.

“It means renters won’t have to bid more than advertised to secure a rental, that they’ll have their privacy protected and a new code of conduct will stamp out unprofessional practices.

Anyone who needs housing assistance can contact their local Housing Service Centre during business hours or call the 24/7 Homeless Hotline on 1800 474 753.

FREE TOOLS FOR FIRST-YEAR APPRENTICES WITH $1,000 CASHBACK

Thousands of first-year apprentices helping to build more Homes for Queenslanders can now get up to $1,000 cash-back, meaning they get the tools they need virtually for free.

The Free Tools for First Years program will support up to 4,000 new apprentices in trades including construction, plumbing, and electrical to get themselves set up for a big career.

Up to $4 million has been allocated to the Free Tools for First Years rebate program, to assist first year Queensland apprentices in the housing industry which includes construction, plumbing, bricklaying, tiling, plastering, painting, cabinet making, stonemasonry, joinery, and electrical trades.

18-year-old TAFE Queensland first-year electrical apprentice Dax Du Toit said, “for apprentices like me who don’t live at home, there are plenty of other bills to pay for already, so if I didn’t have to worry about saving for tools that would be awesome.

“$1,000 can get you almost a whole tool set as a first year and to not have to save for that would make it so much easier to pay your regular bill.

“There’s a lot of work out there for tradies, some people don’t want to do it, but I like it and I know there’s always going to be work.”

Cash back rebates of up to $1,000 will be made available for apprentices to purchase industry relevant tools.

Apprentices would only be eligible once they have completed their mandatory 3-month probational period.

The rebate will be backdated for eligible apprentices to 1 January 2024 and applications may be made until the fund is exhausted.

Cooking L CAL

Roast Pumpkin & Rosemary Soup

The thick skin on pumpkin can make it hard to prepare, so by roasting it first, the skin can be easily (and safely) removed after to make this warming, wintery soup

INGREDIENTS: (serves 4)

800g pumpkin, seeds removed

1 onion, roughly chopped

2 cloves garlic, peeled

3 sprigs rosemary, leaves only (discard the stalks)

1 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp honey

1 ½ cups milk

1 ½ cups chicken or veggie stock salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD: Preheat oven to 180°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper.

Wipe pumpkin skin to ensure it’s clean, then cut pumpkin into 6 wedges or pieces Place onto lined tray with onion, garlic and rosemary leaves. Drizzle with oil and honey and season well with salt and pepper.

Bake in preheated oven for 40 minutes or until pumpkin is tender and golden.

Allow pumpkin to cool for 10 minutes (or until cool enough to handle). Meanwhile, place milk and stock into a large saucepan and bring to the boil.

Once cool, remove and discard the skin from the pumpkin (a large spoon works well for this) and add to the hot liquid with the onions, garlic, rosemary and any juices.

Once soup comes to the boil, remove from heat and using a stick blender, process soup until smooth.

TIP: This soup is delicious served with cheese toasts, croutons or garlic bread.

COMMUNITY HAVE YOUR SAY

BUILDING A STRONGER SUNSHINE COAST COMMUNITY TOGETHER

The Sunshine Coast Community Strategy aims to help us: live healthier and more active lifestyles, better connect with our communities, create more vibrant and connected places and spaces, and celebrate our creativity and First Nations culture and heritage.

The strategy has undergone a refresh after vital feedback from more than 1800 community members

Collaborative solutions to transport and housing and homelessness support, more emphasis on community facilities and local activities to bring our communities together, and a renewed focus on inclusion and diversity in all its forms are some of the priorities our community has highlighted.

Other priorities suggested by residents include ensuring balance in the built and natural environment, strengthening community connections as we grow and developing further recognition of First Nations people.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli encouraged all of our community to have their say on this important strategy for our region.

“The draft refreshed Community Strategy reflects our changing Sunshine Coast community priorities,” Mayor Natoli said.

“Here on the Sunshine Coast, we’re connecting and engaging with our communities to build a better future for everyone.

“Residents can provide their feedback by attending one of our community sessions, completing the online survey or, for more detailed feedback, using the feedback template before June 10,” Mayor Natoli said.

“Residents can also get creative and enter the photo competition by sharing a photo that represents our strong Sunshine Coast community.”

Community members who enter the photo competition can win gift vouchers of up to $500, with open and junior categories available

Visit Council’s Have your Say website to get involved today.
