Our dining review this month takes us on a culinary journey to Greece or at least, it felt that way! And, to celebrate national dog day in August why not treat your furry friend to some homemade biscuits Some of the ingredients act as natural de-wormers for dogs, who knew! Check out the local cooking page in this issue.

August is also buzzing with events, including a Street Fair, a Mini Music Festival, and a local Jazz Festival.

SISTERS OF INDIA WEBSITE LUNCH LAUNCH

Following a wonderful Fabrics of India tour in January 2023, Peregian Springs local, Sharon Stevens has been helping develop Sisters of India.

The concept for Sisters of India developed when Sharon heard Suman's story. Suman is Nepalese and during covid both her parents passed away. She was left in the care of her Uncle who coerced her into travelling to Mumbai with him where he sold her into prostitution. From Mumbai her handlers moved her to Ahmedabad, Gujarat. That’s where Suman was rescued from prostitution, provided with housing and taught to sew

Sisters of India started with just Suman however, as all good stories go, they have now rescued 10 disadvantaged ladies and through the efforts of Sisters of India are providing them with a steady source of income after being taught how to sew

All the products made by the Sisters of India are made from recycled sarees or recycled denim These products are beautiful, colourful and a joy to work w

BUSINESS FEATURE

Best Donuts in the Land Winners!

Sunshine Coast business OMG! Decadent Donuts has won a massive four major awards at the Baking Association of Australia, Excellence in Baking Awards held in Melbourne recently. With a clean sweep winning Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Best Gourmet Donut category and also a Silver in the Best Cinnamon Donut category, OMG! Decadent Donuts have positioned themselves as number one in the land

OMG! Decadent Donuts Sunshine Coast local residents and business owners Jenny Rutherford (Sunshine Coast South) and Sharni and Russell Clark (Sunshine Coast North) are completely thrilled to receive these major national awards.

These awards were extra sweet for Jenny, Sharni and Russell, as the judging for the Baking Association Australia Awards are based on “blind tasting”, meaning the panel of top chefs set with the task of determining the best donuts in the land, had zero way of knowing that the winning donuts were free from gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, yeast, nuts and sulphites, 100% natural and vegan.

The award winning flavours in the gourmet section of the Baking Association of Australia Awards won by OMG! Decadent Donuts were GoldSpicy Ranga (a combination ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, cardamom, cloves), Silver - Dusty Queen (orange and cinnamon) and Bronze Coffee Coffee Yum Yum.

Excited Director and spokesperson of OMG! Decadent Donuts network of independent business owners, David Moore, said “OMG! we’ve just won these huge awards against a vast number of ‘normal’ donuts! Gluten free and vegan bakery products often get a bad rap with the assumption that the taste and texture is inferior to regular bakery items. Winning these awards is a clear demonstration that this is not the case.”

OMG! is renowned for its bespoke range of sugars that dust the donuts. The full menu of flavours highlights the ingredients all made from real fruit, vegetables, and spices. These also include Beet-a-licious (beetroot, cinnamon, ginger), Berry Sinful (raspberries, cacao, salt, chili), and classics like Choc Mint Bliss, Cacao Delish and Strawberry Patch, to name just a few For extra decadence, drizzles are now also available, these all also follow the same rigorous ‘free from’ regime.

LOCAL UPDATE

BE AWARE: JOB AND EMPLOYMENT SCAMS

The National Anti-Scam Centre will coordinate a jobs and employment scam fusion cell to disrupt criminal groups advertising or offering jobs which do not exist.

Job and employment scams are targeted to steal money and personal information. Scammers often impersonate legitimate businesses or well-known recruitment agencies.

They use a variety of methods to advertise non-existent jobs, including messaging platforms or social media platforms

Scammers offer work so they can steal money and personal information. Stop and check any job that requires payment of money to make money. It could be a scam. Scammers offer jobs that pay well with low effort. But it’s only the scammer that will make money in the end. Often the job doesn’t exist at all.

Scammers pretend to be hiring on behalf of high-profile companies and online shopping platforms They also impersonate well-known recruitment agencies. Scammers may make contact unexpectedly through text message or encrypted message platforms like WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram Never send passport, identity documents, or bank account details to an employer or recruitment firm unless certain they are genuine.

They often ask for payment so you can start the role and get the income they’ve promised. Don’t enter any arrangement that asks for up-front payment via bank transfer, PayID or cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin or USDT. It’s rare to get money back that is sent this way. Don’t trust a job ad is real just because it appears on a trusted platform or website – scammers post fake ads too. If you come across a scammer, report it to the platform or agency and to scamwatch.gov.au.

REPORT – Act quickly if something feels wrong. Contact your bank immediately if you lose money. If you have provided personal information call IDCARE on 1800 595 160. The more we talk the less power they have Report scams to the National Anti-Scam Centre’s Scamwatch service at scamwatch.gov.au when you see them.

Yiani’s Greek Restaurant is located in the heart of Coolum Beach and services authentic Greek food. They are open Mondays to Saturdays for dine-in or takeaway dinner from 5pm and are BYO and licensed

Location & Access

Located on Beach Road, Coolum Beach; actually between Frank Street and David Low Way. There are carparks with free parking nearby that are all close walking distance.

Service

Dining is indoor and outdoor seating and takeaway. Bookings are recommended as it does get very busy.

The welcome to the restaurant by Yiani was really warm and friendly. It was a cool night but we sat outside with a heater nearby. Food & Drink orders were taken and drinks and dips arrived promptly.

Food & Beverage

The menu has good traditional Greek choices and the drinks menu had some tempting cocktails as well as Yiani’s imported Greek wines. We tried the Dips, Haloumi Fries, Moussaka, and Souvlaki Plates. There was no shrinkflation here as the meal portions were ample and filling Everything was delicious and so tasty.

Summary

Overall we found Yiani’s Greek Restaurant very warm and welcoming. The Greek background music set the scene for a great vibe and the food made us even more happy. The service was really friendly and efficient If you are in the mood for a true Taste of Greece, this is worth it!

COMMUNITY

Owners are being encouraged to ensure their dogs are properly restrained and enclosed after a significant increase in attacks on the Sunshine Coast.

In the 2023-24 financial year, dog attacks in the region were up more than 10 per cent on the previous year A total of 382 dog attacks were reported – 166 on people and 216 on another animal.

Service Excellence Portfolio Councillor

Winston Johnston said owners needed to consider their responsibilities, including walking dogs on a leash and making sure they were appropriately restrained

“The incidents we are seeing are often due to owners being complacent because they don’t think their dog will attack ”

Tougher State enforced dog laws from July 31

These reminders are timely with the rolling out of tougher dog laws by the Queensland Government from July 31

Changes include increased penalties and even jail time possible for serious attacks

The Queensland Government has updated the penalty for not effectively controlling your dog in a public place. An on-the-spot fine will increase to $806. This includes having a dog off-leash in an on-leash area. Or, if the dog is in an off-leash area, the owner must be able to control the dog using voice command.

Calling all Sunshine Coast community groups

funding available

Host community events, deliver community projects and programs or upgrade facilities with help from Sunshine Coast Council.

Strong Community Portfolio Councillor Taylor Bunnag said Council’s next Major Grants round was now open for groups seeking funding for projects, programs, events and facility upgrades.

“Eligible not-for-profit organisations can apply now for up to $15,000 towards one-off projects, events and activities that demonstrate broad community benefit and align with Council’s strategic priorities,” Cr Bunnag said.

Major Grant applications can be submitted in one of six categories:

“This is a great opportunity to secure funding to maintain and improve facilities or to purchase essential equipment for sport, cultural and community activities

“Funding can also be used to activate community spaces and places through community events and activities, or to support community-led projects and initiatives that enhance community wellbeing or grow local economies and creativity.”

-community development -community facilities -creative development -cultural heritage -economic development -sports and recreation.

Grants of up to $30,000 are also available towards infrastructure projects that involve developing, maintaining or improving buildings or land that contribute to providing a safe, accessible and inclusive community facility.

Groups can apply on Council’s website, with submissions closing on August 26.

TMR to investigate noncompliant vehicle safety certificates

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is establishing a dedicated taskforce to tackle vehicle safety certificate compliance.

TMR has been made aware that a number of vehicle safety inspection certificates, also known as ‘roadworthies’ may have been issued across Queensland without a thorough physical inspection of the vehicle being conducted

TMR is aware that 'no inspection required' safety certificates are also being offered through social media channels. These certificates are noncompliant and will not be accepted at TMR customer service centres

Customers with questions, concerns or information can call 3550 7035 or visit

Any person who believes they may have recently been issued a safety certificate without a thorough inspection of the vehicle being undertaken can go to the TMR website to find out more information on what you need to do.

TMR are also in the process of establishing an information hotline as part of the task force establishment.

The TMR website provides details on the types of inspections that must be performed on a vehicle, what the inspection includes, and the maximum fees that can be charged for a safety certificate
