1. As a female lead singer in the male-dominated genre of metal, what challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

At first I faced many challenges; I was just considered pretty and often overlooked as a metal singer. People wouldn’t stay for our set or worse, they’d only stay because they thought I was attractive. I wanted to be recognized for my talent, not what I look like. I’ve been bumped for male fronted metal bands because I was the only female metal band on a show. I’ve had men speak to me completely inappropriately and when I stuck up for myself, I was only met with more derogatory comments. All these experiences only made me want to get better, to up my performance and push harder. I wanted to be respected in the metal community for my talent. My band has consistently leveled up, growing slowly and taking steps to be the international touring band we are today.
2. Can you tell us about your journey as a vocalist and how you developed your unique style and sound?
I have been involved in music my entire life. As a young child I would attend band rehearsals with my dad, who plays the guitar, and I fell I love with the idea of being on stage. At 4 years old I would make my first appearance, singing solo with background tracks. I can still remember the feeling, and knew from that moment it was what I wanted to do. I was involved with musicals, chorus, theater productions, vocal lessons and bands throughout my youth. I have a wide range of musical experience that has made me into the singer I am today. When I was younger I sang a lot of soul, blues, and classical music as well as rock and roll and even some pop. I didn’t really get into metal until my early teens, after finding Korn, thanks to one of my classmates. I absolutely fell in love with them and to this day Korn is still my favorite band. As far as my personal sound, I have pulled a lot from Jonathan Davis, Maria Brink, Amy Lee, Robert Plant, and Janis Joplin to create my sound. I’ve learned to be dynamic and practice the rudiments to keep my voice in shape.
