The Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) is a nearly 900,000 square foot adult and children's hospital. With 16 floors and 2 patient towers, the expansion project will provide 693 patient beds and a wide range of medical services.

The new building will also serve as an educational and research hub.

Due to the hospital’s proximity to major earthquake faults, engineers designed the new structures on a vertical earthquake isolation system. Story continued on page 5.

A MESSAGE FROM BORIS Being a part of the Essential Workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic has had its challenges, but #TeamHelix continues to rise to the occasion and has been a big part of keeping our projects and the economy going. Thank you to each and every member of the Helix Family for working hard while ensuring everyone stays safe and healthy. We appreciate your diligence when it comes to hand washing and social distancing, we are grateful to everyone for wearing their face coverings when they are unable to maintain social distancing, and we look forward to continuing to support our employees and their families as best as we can during these difficult times.

In April, Helix disbursed grants to eighteen employees who were impacted by COVID-19. We are supporting affected employees by providing them with household essentials during their time of need and we have launched specific protocols to ensure this illness doesn’t spread on our jobsites and in our offices. The COVID-19 Task Force is working diligently to support all our employees during this unprecedented crisis. As we navigate through these challenging times together, we have remained dedicated to living out our Helix values and doing right by people. Thank you to all who participated in the #HelixGives challenge in May! Among the many amazing things our community did to give back, #TeamHelix organized three blood drives, delivered care baskets to doctors, nurses, and support staff at various local hospitals, collected food to be distributed to individuals in need, delivered breakfasts and lunches from local restaurants to first responders, cooked meals for those who fell ill, and celebrated teachers and neighbors through beautiful works of art.

FIELD COVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS ADDITIONAL COVID-19 FIELD MEASURES Helix took the following additional safety measures on our job sites: Created site-specific COVID-19 safety policies and provided training to all Helix employees.

Created and distributed multiple ToolBox talks for COVID-19 prevention including conversations on hand hygiene, cleaning protocols, and reducing exposure.

Created and distributed multiple COVID-19 graphics, outlining best practices to stay healthy, for posting at all jobsite locations.

Created and implemented focused COVID-19 jobsite inspection and assessment processes-- this allows us to ensure all environments are being cleaned regularly, they have all necessary supplies and PPE, and we can stay informed on any potential exposure across trades to ensure individuals are quarantined and stop the spread.

COVID-19 RESPONSE AT PALO ALTO VA In response to the pressures COVID-19 has placed on our healthcare system, Helix partnered with the VA Palo Alto Health Care system and SJ Amoroso Construction to modify several patient rooms on the healthcare campus. The modified rooms have been identified as a COVID-19 patient overflow facility. Timely completion was critical with a performance period of just 45 calendar days.

As Oakland continues to evolve, attracting more residents and businesses, investors are eager to participate in the city's cultural revitalization. 1721 Webster is one of several new towers that are dramatically reshaping the city's downtown area.

University of California Irvine's (UCI) Middle Earth Housing, named after the fictional setting of J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy, is an upcoming residential structure at UCI. The building will allow UCI students to study, collaborate, dine and socialize in one space.

Middle Earth resulted from greater demand for student housing and a desire to combat ongoing student housing issues on campus.

The two towers will provide 500 beds in addition to a new 1,000-seat dining facility, five large lounges, study rooms, multipurpose rooms, recreational space and administrative offices.

The project is design-build and Helix's scope includes a complete turnkey electrical system including tele/data, A/V, security systems and fire alarm system.

Project Manager Roena Garcia stated, “It is rewarding to know that by creating a LEEDPlatinum facility, Helix is playing an integral role in helping UCI become carbon-neutral by 2025. Plus, when you encounter an RFI discussing the correct grammatical structure of an Elvish language, you know you are working on something truly unique."

Team Helix in Nevada started the Plaza Hotel and Casino rehabilitation in 2018. A broken water main flooded the 19th floor of the North Tower, damaging distribution equipment and wiring on the top four floors.

For the renovation, Helix replaced more than two-hundred feet of 480V and 208V busway and seventeen 480V and 208V panels. The team also installed a 200 amp 480V switch; a 1,600 amp 208V switch for new busway up the tower; 16,000 feet of DLO cable; and 34 temporary panels for temporary power.

The course of the team's work required two overnight shut downs; the first to transition from damaged permanent power to temporary power, and the second to transition from temporary power to new permanent power. Each shutdown required more than 40 men to work over 20 hours.

Project Manager Troy McTeer said that the job was difficult and required immense planning to ensure great work.

McTeer believes the project is a perfect example of prosperity through adversity.

San Francisco State University Student Housing is an upcoming 230,000 square foot mixed-use student housing facility.

The development will have 171 residential units along with retail space, study lounges, parking and student amenities.

The new building is part of SFSU's effort to create a university that has a real sense of community. The project will give students more affordable housing in the second most expensive city in the United States.

San Francisco State University Student Housing is the 4th project that Helix has worked on with American Campus Communities within the past 5 years.

Helix's work for the project includes power, lighting, lighting controls, FA, security, A/V, ERRCS and LV data/Wifi.

As an SFSU alumni, Superintendent Dan Smyth has a personal connection project.

Smyth stated, "It is unique to build student housing for the same college at which I received my degree."

Treating more than 219,000 children from around the world each year, Children's National Hospital is the premier provider of pediatric services in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Focus areas of the hospital include neuroscience, genetics, clinical and translational science and cancer and immunology. Now, The hospital is expanding its life-saving pediatric research for children by remodeling four campus buildings that date back to the 1950s.

Helix's scope of work involves installation of new power distribution; telecom/security conduits; light fixtures; fire alarm system; site, theater and landscape lighting; lighting control and protection; a 2000kw generator; and new electrical/communication duct banks.

IN MEMORY OF JIM CULVER Helix Superintendent, Jim Culver passed away in May due to complications from COVID-19. He had been hospitalized and courageously battling the virus for four weeks.

Jim joined the Helix Family in August of 2005 as a Superintendent, making an immediate impact. Notable projects lead by Jim included three projects in Hawaii; the interior demo and remodel of the RitzCarlton Kapalua (completed in 7 months), Switchgear upgrade at the West Kauai Medical Center, and the BEQ at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. In the San Diego area Jim was involved in projects that spanned the spectrum of electrical construction; The Old Globe Theater, a rooftop solar project at the University of San Diego, Grossmont Hospital D&T, The Pendry Hotel, and North Coastal Health and Human Services Facility, just to name a few. For the past year and a half Jim was the Senior Superintendent at the Children’s National Clinic on the grounds of the old Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., a $17.6M project involving the demo and remodel of five historical buildings.

Those of us who’ve had the privilege of working with Jim knew him to be first and foremost, an electrical craftsman. It definitely runs in the family – his Dad was an electrical contractor and both brothers are electricians. Jim’s younger brother, Bill is a member of the Helix Team in Nevada. One of his key attributes was the ability to stay calm and focused in the midst of the storm. It didn’t matter who was yelling or what the conflict was, Jim was unflappable; garnering respect from Owners, G.C.’s and other Trades alike.

Jim was a mentor to many current Helix Superintendents; wasn’t big on sitting someone down and “teaching” them, but much more effective at showing a person how do to something and then pushing them to do it themselves.

The suddenness of this tragedy is difficult for all of us to process, and for his family even more so. Please keep Jim’s wife, Marcia and his three children, Nick, Matthew and Sam in your thoughts and prayers.
