ESTIMATING & DESIGN BUILD

As we enter 2024, the economic outlook is excellent, even though certain risks to construction spending have appeared. Helix Electric is predicting a record year for work put in place as well as sitting on the largest backlog of work in the history of the company. The market does seem to be changing, however, and we may need to adapt to a changing environment as we procure work for 2025 and beyond.

While construction pricing has evened out, we are no longer seeing the material escalation issues we felt in but certain construction projects are still plagued by delays in procurement of switchgear and a shortage of labor that is impacting all market segments. The rise of data center and manufacturing work nationwide could increase the impact on the labor market even more in the next few years as all the market segments compete for workers. Helix is going to need to be extremely strategic in our pursuit of projects with an eye on resources like never before.

The key multi-family market is also changing. The estimating and design departments are seeing a rise in both high-rise, and mid-rise projects with podiums or wrapped parking garages. As the projects get more complex and are i.e. configure into tighter pieces of real estate, we are competing with a different set of electrical

contractors. This is especially true here in Las Vegas, as well as in Salt Lake City. These projects take much longer to come to market, secure their financing and begin construction that the simpler wood frame on slab projects that we used to build in conjunction with the higher interest rates today, there could be a lull in multi-family work in the coming year prior to the new, larger projects kick in and start to go vertical.

Overall, the market is robust, and Helix is situated well to take advantage of the work that’s available. I am so proud of my team and look forward to the year ahead and all of the prospective work we will continue to pursue. It is truly great to be positioned to compete in this robust market, and continue to WIN!!

TRAINING DEPARTMENT

The Training Department is getting ready for a busy year. We have enrolled two more Clark High School students in the Prefabrication Department. These employees will work in the morning, three days a week, before they go to school. They will join last year’s Clark students starting their careers in the electrical trade. Last year’s students were both accepted in the ABC program.

We will be starting a program for employees that are not in the apprenticeship program. This will follow the WECA apprenticeship curriculum. Additional information and the dates on the classes start dates forthcoming.

Tips & Tricks for Cert Renewals and Uploading Certs with Helix Training

Certification Renewals are for employees that have certifications in scissor lift, boom lift, and forklift and their current certification is going to expire soon. If you do the performance evaluation prior to the certification expiring, it will renew your certification without needing to take the online portion again. Just because the evaluation is completed does not mean your certification is renewed. An important part to renewing the certification is making sure it has the proper information completed and submitted to the correct person. When renewing certifications, the Training Department needs the performance evaluation filled out by the employee’s supervisor and signed prior to sending it to through Training email.

Renewal forms can be found on Powernet under Safety Documents.

Know Your Roll – Emergencies Happen:

On January 18, 2024 at the Edwards Air Force Base Flight Test Lab Project, a member of the Edwards AFB Security Team fainted during a routine site visit due to complications of her pregnancy. John Anderson, a 2nd year Helix Apprentice, immediately notified Dan Young, Helix Lead, that an ambulance needed to be called via his two way radio which all Helix Team Members have on the Project.

Greg Fleming, Korte Construction Safety Director, remarked about our heroic actions that day

“Guys I would like to applaud the help Helix field team gave to our client representative Lauren today. The quick actions of your crew and use of Helix radios led to an extremely fast response time and good health of the affected. Thank You for kicking it into gear when it mattered most. Great job.”

NOTEWORTHY PROJECTS

VENETIAN, VOLTAIRE THEATRE

The Project included the remodel of the original theatre facility that previously hosted C2K Night Club, Blue Man Group and Rock of Ages. The lower section of the public seating was demolished along with the structural ‘rake’ used for theatre seating and replaced with a ‘Cabaret’ style club with the addition of a performer’s ‘runway’ stage, DJ Booth, individual table, booth and VIP seating along with standing room only areas and a fully stocked walk-up bar. Theatrical lighting and sound systems were remodeled and upgraded which included new lighting and sound trusses, control booth and support equipment. In addition to the additional stage, audience (‘house’) lighting, bar area pendants and chandeliers, the seating area is filled with three hundred (300) glass ‘champagne bubbles’, one hundred (100) of which are able move vertically. The Theatre is illuminated throughout with linear LED lighting accenting the mirrored thematic finishes along the exterior walls, back bar, handrails and booths. The Theatre’s entrance and public promenades also received new finishes and upgraded LED lighting

EMPOWERING OUR TEAM

A Message from Executive Vice President Mike

Dear Team Helix,

I hope this message finds you well and thriving in your roles here at Helix Electric Nevada. I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts on the importance of empowerment in our leadership and the unwavering belief we hold in every one of you.

First and foremost, I want to express my sincere gratitude for the hard work, dedication, and passion that each of you brings to our company every single day. Your contributions are truly the backbone of our success, and I am continually inspired by your commitment to excellence.

At Helix Nevada, we firmly believe in the power of empowerment. We understand that true success lies in our ability to trust and empower our team members to make meaningful decisions and drive positive change. Empowerment is not just a buzzword for us – it is a fundamental principle that guides everything we do.

As leaders, it is our responsibility to create an environment where every team member feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. This means providing the necessary resources, training, and guidance (and support) to help everyone succeed. It is also about creating an environment in which our team members KNOW and FEEL that they have the autonomy and freedom to make decisions and take individual ownership of our work.

I am a firm believer in the idea that great leaders are not just born – they are made. And we are committed to doing everything that we can to help cultivate and develop the next generation of leaders here at Helix Electric Nevada. Whether it’s through mentorship programs, leadership development workshops, or simply leading by example, we are dedicated to empowering every one of our team members to grow and thrive in our careers.

Lastly, empowerment is not just about giving you the tools and resources you need to succeed – it’s also about instilling a sense of confidence and belief in yourself. We want every one of you to know that we believe in you.

We believe not just in your abilities, your talents, and your potential. But we also believe in your commitment to our company and the success of our partners and their projects. And we are here to support you every step of the way.

In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business landscape, it’s more important than ever to foster a culture of empowerment and trust. When team members feel empowered, they are more engaged, motivated, and committed to achieving our company goals.

So as we move forward together, I encourage each of you to embrace the power of empowerment in your own leadership journey. Whether you’re a seasoned veteran or just starting out in your career, remember that you have the power to make a difference – not only in your own life, but in the lives of your teammates, our customers, and Helix Electric as a whole.

Thank you once again for your continued dedication and commitment to excellence. Together, we should be proud of what we have done, and what we are poised to do. Take pride in our work, pride in our company, and pride in the relationships we have created to bring this all together. We are HELIX PROUD.

Warm regards,

SAFETY

Promotion Announcement

Angela Adams has recently been promoted to Area Safety Manager. Angela worked as a Project Safety Manager and as an Area Safety Coordinator. She is currently a certified Construction and Health Safety Technician. She has done an outstanding job for Helix, is very detail oriented, and we are pleased to have Angela working in an expanded capacity to help provide support to all our operations departments.

There’s Something Different About the Safety Audit

Last year we made a major overhaul of our Safety Audit process. It has a fresh new look, but as we should all know, looks aren’t everything. For a quick summary, the audit is intended to observe a real time snapshot of the safe or atrisk behaviors, conditions, processes, and practices we are conducting on our projects. It focuses on our policies. The score reflects what we are doing well and where we have areas that require improvement.

The new audit embodies everything the old audit accomplished. The most significant change is the level of detail and questions we have included. Instead of scoring behaviors, and categories of activities with guidelines, we now have a comprehensive list of in-depth questions spelled out for our team that includes just about every work activity we may encounter. Questions are scored as “Yes” it is safe, “No” it is not safe, or N/A and will not impact the outcome of the audit. Simply put, those areas that are applicable get scored and those that are not applicable do not. We structured the intent of the audit similarly to the way we would like a quality Pre-Task Plan to be filled out. The primary difference being the audit encompasses the entire project as opposed to a specific task.

The other big change was the scoring. Previously, an 80 or higher was a passing score. The score was derived from an equation that is not worth going into detail for the purposes of this article. However, the new passing score is 90 or higher. To determine the audit score for any project, we took

all the “Yes” or safe observations and divided them by the total observations. For example, let’s say there were 100 total observations on an audit - 97 were marked as “Yes” and three were marked as “No.” To calculate the score, we would take 97/100 which equals 97% for the audit.

The true value of the audit is not the score. The value is identifying the safety actions our projects excel in and the areas that need improvement. It’s a proactive tool that allows safety and operations to discuss and correct potentially hazardous conditions or behaviors before an employee injury or incident occurs. It opens the door for communication, so we at Helix can share our successes, ideas, and make the appropriate adjustments when needed.
