French-Anishinaabe artist Caroline Monnet presented her stage designs made from recycled materials like insulation, Tyvek, and construction plastic. Included in the collection was a colorful woven coat that singer Jeremy Dutcher recently wore on tour, made from recycled housing materials. “It’s a way of addressing social and environmental issues through design,” Monnet told Vogue of the design. Métis designer Jason Baerg presented a collection of soft, flowing, pleated dresses designed for movement (his models opted for contemporary dance on the runway, rather than traditional walking). Meanwhile, Rising Plains Cree designer Jontay Kahm closed the show with these dark and dramatic creations, including a sculptural feather coat and a pleated dress entirely made of beads.

As these extraordinary designs debuted on the catwalk in front of an intimate crowd of creatives, one couldn’t help but reflect on how these outfits set against the backdrop of the glitzy LA cityscape certainly deserved a spot on the celebrity red carpets taking place just a few blocks away. As Hollywood continues to make space for more inclusive Indigenous narratives, especially thanks to recent hits like Rez Ball and Fancy Dance, the catwalk made the argument
that mainstream fashion spaces need to do the same. The innovation and style are there, and these designers will be the ones leading that revolution.

Opening the show was Luiseño/Shoshone-Bannock artist Jamie Okuma, who hails from the La Jolla Indian Reservation in California. She presented her signature patterned Parfleche dresses worn by stars like Lily Gladstone on the red carpet beaded chokers, and dentalium shell earrings. Next up was a refined menswear collection from Orlando Dugi, a Santa Fe-based Diné designer specializing in formal wear. Dugi debuted his fluid designs, like a pink puff-sleeved jacket embellished with crystals, as well as a beaded straight-cut shirt and tulle skirt worn over pants.
