Masqueraders wearing carnival costumes with wings and crowns jumped up behind sound trucks large mobile stages outfitted with speakers, DJ equipment, and steel pans that crawled through Port of Spain on Tuesday morning.At Victoria Square, members of the Lost Tribe carnival band fastened on backpacks made of drapery, gigantic clusters of butterflies, and capes. Sweet soca and calypso boomed throughout the capital city. “If you hear any noiseIn the background, they’re music trucks on theAvenue. Welcome to carnival,” says ValmikI'maharaj, the creative director and bandleader of the Lost Tribe. Maharaj says he’s everything from “head cook” to “bottle washer” he’s a designer, editor, strategist, and visionary.
In 2021, the Lost Tribe design team had to come up with designs for a 2023 carnival that wasn’t yet a reality. The government had been strict during the coronavirus pandemic and, at times,Imposed a curfew from nineIn the evening until fiveIn the morning. “At the time whenI came up with [the]
theme, you know, my designers was feeling very heavy,” Maharaj says. “They were like, ‘Well, we designing for a carnival that we don’t even knowIfIt exists,’because we had to design before Trinidad government said, ‘Yes, we having a carnival.’” Maharaj sensed that morale was low, but kept carnival TuesdayIn mind.
The theme for the next carnival season would be “202We,” Maharaj says,It signifies freedom;shades of blue would symbolizeIts essence. He says blue soapIs part of Caribbean heritage andIs used to wash away “bad mind,” akin to the Turkish nazar. “You know, we’re doing a blessing here. Everybody who comes to Trinidad for those two days on the road to do something that,In some which way, changes your existence for the rest of the year,Increases your energy, or charges you back up.” The yield this year was the most fashionable costumes on the roadIn Trinidad and Tobago Carnival, and the Lost Tribe won the title of large band of the year by the National Carnival Commission, besting all of the troupes on the road. “You know the saying ‘a birdIs a bird; a fishIs a fish,’like,I couldn’t do that,” Maharaj says. “I felt like there was something artistic that needed to be said.And that’s whyI really wanted to give my designers the opportunity to be very abstract.”
