Back to the fashion flip-flop: just days ago at Cannes, celebrities chose to forgo their heels on the red carpet all together in favor of the barely-there thong sandal. Most notably modeled by Jennifer Lawrence, the minimalist summer shoe style is clearly here to stay. film paired luminous skin with an effortless hairstyle. Created by her go-to hairstylist George Northwood, the look was a masterclass in making hair look effortless, but still polished enough for a formal red-carpet event. “Because the dress was quite pretty, we wanted to do something a bit tougher with her hair,” Northwood tells me. “I tonged some texture into it in random sections for an undone, messy finish, then backcombed the crown area to achieve some height.”
But in terms of how we treat our body, an attempt at moral purity is both impossible and useless. It was the conundrum of my twenties to care about fat positivity and also understand the realities of life when it comes to my aching knees. It’s still a conundrum to me now. And when it comes to matters of the body in society there is no morally pure way to be. The bad parts of society win when we internalize a moral code or a beauty standard that is designed to make us fail.
