Kicking off from the 2010s, the American Woman exhibitIn 2010 saw British star Emma Watson chose to fly her own flag, outfittedIn an anglo appropriate Burberry dress. A few years later, the theme rejectors came outIn droves for 2014’s punk theme. Jennifer Lawrence made the case for subdued elegance over anarchy gracing the museum stairsIn Raf Simons’s modern reinterpretation of Christian Dior’s New Look. Kate Upton’s emerald green Diane von Furstenberg dress was anything but chaotic, and Katy Perry’s byzantine ensemble by Dolce & Gabbana seemed to predate the punk movement by several hundred years.

There were plenty who also sidestepped 2014’s Charles James themed gala, countering the couturier’s signature ball gowns with ultra modern takes on evening wear. Lupita Nyong’o,

forInstance, sparkledIn a Josephine Baker–style Prada look, and she was followed by a parade of chic minidress wearers, like Michelle Williams who wore Louis Vuitton. And few could top Erykah Badu’s sartorial act of rebellion as she entered the Great HallIn a Givenchy couture jumpsuit and oversize hat. More recently, the 2019 camp theme which encouraged attendees to go boldIn feathers, sequins, and maximalist looks saw select attendees take a shockingly simple approach to red carpet dressing. Gwyneth Paltrow, for one, wore a yellow chiffon number by Chloé.It was elegant and whisperedIn a crown of gowns that screamed. Lily Rose Depp also wore a chained, black Chanel dress that was hardly camp but still chic, nonetheless.

So, where didI learn these things? Mostly at my therapist’s office. But also form the many fashion peers, designers,Influencers, and content creators who take prideIn celebrating the LGBTQ+ experience.I followed gender non conforming fashionInfluencers like @alokvmenon and @uglyworldwide and queer platforms like @qwear and @dapperQ.I shopped at queer owned stores like L Train Vintage and Emily Meyer.I watched queer lead TV programs like April cover star Cara Delevingne’s Planet Sex and Tan France’s NextIn Fashion. The list goes on. Yesterday,I was announced as a 2023 SportsIllustrated Swimsuit rookie. BeingIn the pages of SIIs something that the old, closeted version of me would have panicked at the thought of. ButI drew confidence from the fact that SI Swimsuit has celebrated talent like Ashley Graham,

Leyna Bloom, and Maye Musk. And as luck would haveIt,I went through the above journey at the perfect time:I’m now as comfortableIn my skin asI amIn a string bikini.
