The dresses and gowns this week also had architectural elements to them. At a Gagosian Gallery event in New York, model Karlie Kloss rocked LaQuan Smith’s sexy cutout gown. While out and about in the Big Apple, Kim Kardashian chose Alaïa’s croc effect gown, which was as bodycon as a garment can get (it’s her signature look, after all). At the second annual Gold Gala in L.A., actor Sandra Oh chose Prabal Gurung’s satiny pink town and draped emerald skirt an elegant take on the persisting color-blocking trend.
There were some great suits on the step and repeats this week, too. At the Angel City premiere in Hollywood, Natalie Portman wore Miu Miu’s black short suit, complete with a buttoned-up tweed jacket a subtle nod to Jackie O, who she’s famously portrayed on-screen. So it figures that within the new exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” inaugurated this week with the annual fashion extravaganza of the Met Gala, a line is the very first thing the visitor sees. They nod to the theory developed by William Hogarth in the 18th century that underpins the exhibition: namely, that the perfect form the gentle, graceful arc of the “serpentine line” lays somewhere in between the two.
