In a recent interview with Kate Solomon for the Guardian, Roan spoke about the severe depression that came with sudden fame. “It felt like Roan had everything she ever wanted – and the weight of it was crushing her,” Solomon wrote. What mother, especially one who has struggled with postnatal depression, can’t relate? Much of Roan’s interview reminded me of my own struggle to have everything I want: two beautiful daughters. With a five-year-old and a nineyear-old, the last time I could leave the house without thinking about other people’s happiness was 10 years ago. When Roan set boundaries with her fans, I applauded her and took credit for it myself.
In a short documentary posted to YouTube in 2017, Roan shared of her music, “Honestly, all I really want is for people to feel something when they hear it.” She was probably thinking of her fellow 20-somethings, but her ’80s synth sounds have also energized the tired, overwhelmed middle-aged moms of the world. “The gift of Chappell is that she can be present enough to open up a moment in time for us to step back and experience all of its different dimensions sadness, sexuality, joy, fear, and all the complicated emotions of being a young person,” Abby H., 41, a
mother of an eight-year-old and a five-year-old, told me recently. Those emotions can be harder to find in the midst of motherhood and aging, but Roan’s music has a way of bringing them to the surface.
