The event comes after Celine announced the departure of Hedi Slimane earlier Wednesday. Rider's arrival at Celine is something of a homecoming. The American designer previously served as design director at the brand, working there for 10 years, spanning Phoebe Philo's tenure. He was most recently creative director at Polo Ralph Lauren, a position he held since 2018. He left Ralph Lauren at the end of May. Rider replaces Slimane, who was appointed artistic, creative and image director of Celine in 2018 after Philo left. Slimane, who previously worked at Saint Laurent and Dior Homme, dropped the accent on the "e" in Céline and introduced a new logo ahead of his first show. His debut collection for Spring/Summer 2019 (when he added menswear) was met with “a barrage of criticism,” wrote Robin Givhan of The Washington Post. “In one evening, he destroyed everything Celine had to offer, and washed it clean. His name may not have been on the label, but in every other way, the brand might as well have been called Slimane,” Givhan wrote. For AW19, he turned to the bourgeois French girl look.
