The impact of Cohen's awkward stutter and comic book addiction has been well-documented; in a 2023 article for the Daily Beast, writer Kerensa Cadenas joked that Brody's all-consuming cuteness "ruined a generation of people." Sure, he's not the perfect boyfriend compared to the beautiful, clothes-obsessed Summer (Rachel Bilson), but he still manages to charm viewers with his combination of awkwardness, messy hair, T-shirt-wearing, and not-always-there confidence.
In fact, looking back on this show, I wonder if Seth Cohen’s appeal lies in his imperfections. Many of us are familiar with male TV leads who are essentially John Wayne trying to play a
high school kid, from Henry Winkler as Fonzie on Happy Days to every male actor ever to appear on One Tree Hill. Brody is also an adult playing a teenager (he was 24 when the first episode of The OC aired!), but he’s also really funny and a little whiny and really into indie music in other words, a recognizable, even attainable, guy underneath the veneer of teen drama celebrity.
It’s been nearly two decades since that day in the art warehouse, and since then, I’ve come out as gay and more or less stopped dating straight men (unless, for some reason, Nick Kroll is reading this). My obsession with Brody, however, has gone nowhere something I quickly learned while watching him transform into a hot rabbi in the new Netflix series Nobody Wants This. Any handsome, pot-smoking rabbi can inspire a bit of Hot Priest-like fervor, but it was the casting of Brody who turned Seth Cohen into one of the first truly likable Nice Jewish Boys (or NJBs, as they’re known in the tribe) on mainstream television that unlocked my extremely predictable millennial passions.
