I liked him immediately for reasons unrelated to why I liked his writing, the comfort of constantly wondering, “Are people allowed to say things like that?” when I was around him. I liked him even more when I learned that we shared a passion for karaoke, and even more when he hired a professional magician named Justin Sight to surprise and amaze us at his birthday party. (Justin made a reappearance at Tony’s Rejection launch party in the East Village last month.)
I met Tony last year through mutual friends at a party I was nervous about attending. I was still in the process of moving to New York and unsure of how to define myself as a writer and a person, given the more successful people around me. For some reason, this particular gathering made me bristle with defensive anxiety, until Tony, whom I had never met before, began saying some of the most surprising, honest, and unprintable (and unprintable) things I’ve ever heard anyone say in real life, let alone casually recount as anecdotes at a party.
I met Tony recently at the Rialto Grande, a Brooklyn bar that straddles our two neighborhoods, where we drank some Cosmopolitans during happy hour, and where I wanted to ask him how he succeeded where so many, it seems to me, fail; writing in a way that feels authentic and compelling, contemporary, without veering into the kind of internet-reference-laden prose that I find not only inelegant but essentially unreadable, little more than a series of flashcards with buzzwords on them that flash into my brain and then disappear forever. I asked him about this and whether he has to strategize to avoid the risk of references becoming outdated or redundant.
