13. On “Happy Mistake,” another acoustic original, she sings, “I can try to hide behind makeup, but the show must go on. If I can fix the broken pieces, then I made a happy mistake.” I love it when Gaga does simple tracks that show off her gorgeous voice like this. Sure, I love the whimsical Mother Monster Gaga but her dramatic flair can make you forget what a great singer she is. 14. The album ends with “That’s Life,” a song made famous by Frank Sinatra in 1966. “That’s life that’s what people say,” she sings. “Funny how some people like to trample on dreams but I won’t let that get me down.” Those aren’t really words to live by. Don’t let life get you down, folks!

For the past four decades, British artist Lubaina Himid has focused on big questions. How can the African diaspora be made more visible to the world? What are the ongoing effects of colonialism, slavery? What can be done about hunger, imprisonment, war? For such heavy subjects, Himid’s work is often filled with humor, her folk imagery rendered in bright, saturated colors. Her paintings and installations have a way of drawing the viewer closer. “You are invited into the conversation,” Himid, 70, tells me.

A leading figure in the British Black Arts Movement of the 1980s and 1990s, Himid has exhibited widely and received numerous prestigious awards, including the Turner Prize in 2017 and a CBE appointment in 2018. Most recently, she was awarded the Suzanne Deal Booth/FLAG Art Foundation Award, resulting in “Lubaina Himid: Make Do and Mend,” currently on view at the FLAG Art Foundation in New York. (The exhibition was co-organized by The Contemporary Austin, where it debuted earlier this year.)
