While in Georgia’s wine region, why not sample some… beer? Lost Ridge Brewery, part of the Lost Ridge Inn, is arguably one of Georgia’s first and certainly most experimental craft breweries. Think Qvevris-brewed beer with the famous Rkatsiteli grape, for example. Enjoy your tasting on the open terrace overlooking the rolling hills and you’ll be amazed. When exploring Georgia’s premier wine region, wine tasting is a given. The only question is whether to stay at a marani, a family-owned winery, or a larger producer. The special thing about a smaller winery is that in Kakheti, houses often have their own winery on the ground floor. Either way, be sure to book in advance. Often there are no websites, and some Instagram accounts suggest contacting them via DM.

Renowned as one of the pioneers of the natural wine movement in Georgia and beyond, Pheasant's Tears in Sighnaghi may be in its 20th year, but the winery/restaurant remains an allaround great place that creatively highlights local ingredients and champions ancient Georgian traditions. Founded by a group of friends, the winery is run by winemaker John Wurdeman, with chef Gia Rokashvili in charge of the kitchen. The restaurant is housed in a 200-year-old house,

where everything is cooked on site and the menu changes daily according to the seasons. Just trust the chef to come up with delicious dishes like golden button mushrooms simply tossed with butter, salt and a little pepper, or free-range pork roasted with white wine, peaches, rosemary, local peppers and raspberries of course accompanied by some unique natural wines from rare Georgian endemic grape varieties like Vardesperi Rkatsiteli.

With no street signs and just two tables outside, Odlisi Cheese is a true hidden gem tucked away in a picturesque Telavi courtyard. One of Georgia’s few artisan cheesemakers, the family business is run by head cheesemaker Rati Rostomashvili, while his wife Maka and daughters welcome guests to the quaint cheese shop and bar next door. Opened in 2022, they now offer up to 32 different raw cheeses: there’s one with walnuts, nettles, truffles and even cumin. Book ahead if you want to sample the many cheeses paired with wine, which take place inside the stone walls of a former schoolhouse, with charming candlelit rooms that make for a unique dining experience.
