According to Variety, this upcoming seven-part adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1952 magnum opus will "explore the multigenerational story of the Trask family," farmers who settled in California's Salinas Valley in the early 20th century, "focusing new attention on its indelible antihero, Cathy Ames." In the novel, Cathy is portrayed as the embodiment of evil a stunningly beautiful blonde who is fully aware of the power she has over people. As a teenager, she burned down her family's home, killing her parents; invaded and then married the novel's hero, Adam; seduced his brother, Charles; became pregnant and unsuccessfully attempted to abort the babies; and fled the family shortly after giving birth to twins, shooting her husband in the shoulder when he tried to stop her. She then changes her name to Kate, begins working in a brothel, poisons the mistress, and takes over, turning it into a den of sexual sadism. Her story eventually ends with her committing suicide.

It's a pivotal role that has been played by some formidable actors in the past: Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for playing Cathy in Elia Kazan's 1955 East of Eden, costarring James Dean, while Bond girl Jane Seymour earned a Golden Globe nomination for her own daring performance in the 1981 miniseries. But, in theory, this new retelling would give Cathy more space than ever before and really flesh out her backstory and motivations in a way that the book never really did.

As we've come to expect from the streaming giant, the supporting cast is fantastic Poor Things' Christopher Abbott as Adam, Challengers' Mike Faist as Charles, Hoon Lee as the Trask family's Chinese-American servant Lee, along with Pugh's Cathy as is the behind-the-scenes team. Zoe Kazan best known for her work on The Big Sick, The Plot Against America, and She Said, who co-wrote the Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal-starring Wildlife with her partner Paul Dano, and who is also Elia Kazan's niece is leading the adaptation and will serve as showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart. Meanwhile, Lion's Garth Davis and Lady Chatterley's Lover's Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre will share directing duties, and Pugh has signed on as an executive producer.
